  • Creating a file server - How can I use a large VHD file in Hyper-V? (700GB)

    Hey everyone, After a few discussions (here, here, and here), I am still unable to create a simple VM that will be used as a fileserver hosted on my Hyper-V box. I have created a fixed 700GB SCSI drive (.vhd file), as I have learned an IDE drive of this size is not possible. Not to sound too cynical, but its blown me away at how much trouble its been to create a large amount of space and start using it. What is the best way to create a fileserver with a drive of this size hosted on Hyper-V Server 2008, and how can I get it going??? Inclusion of OS, driver, integration tools etc, anything you feel is required would be greatly appreciated. Extra information I am using the stand-alone version of Hyper-V server, and not Windows Server 2008. I have tried loading the Linux Integration Tools (linked in the comments of the last link above) onto a SUSE 11 VM and the installation fails, the machine cannot see the vhd at all.     i have a domain and i am using freehostia as a web hoster. In the name server of domain i have registered the name of both servers of freehostia. And in my control panel in the hosted domain section its showing "1 Hosted Domains / 1 Domains Listed".however on clicking on that its showing an error that "The selected domain name has not been registered yet. Please register it from the Domain Manager section first" now whenever i am trying to access my website by using dns1. its accessible but when i am using WWW. its not accessible for example my domain name is example.com if i will type dns1.example.com then my webpage will open but when i type www.example.com its showing "Oops! Google Chrome could not find www.example.com" And for information 24 hours has been passed since i have registered my name servers.

  • Client can't reach my production webserver. It's their ISP's fault, but now what?

    I have a customer in Michigan who can't access my production SaaS webserver that is hosted on Slicehost. All other companies across the US/Canada/Europe have no problem reaching the site. This problem is occuring intermittantly, and Slicehost customer service says it's a problem with the client's ISP. I got the IP address of my client, and ping'ing that IP address from my PROD server fails, but ping'ing the IP address from my dev box or our seperate blog server (also hosted on slicehost) works. How do I debug a problem like this? I asked the client to reach out to their local ISP and ask about this problem. A traceroute shows that the packets are getting stopped on a Comcast Michigan node which is the client's ISP. Is there anything I can do additionally to fix this problem for my client?

  • How to Integrate SharePoint 2007/2010 and Google Apps?

    Hello All, My (smaller) company has an existing Google Apps Deployment, used for E-Mail / Calendar, etc. I'm looking into a SharePoint setup (2010 most likely). One of the best features is that new events are added to one's Outlook Calendar, e-mails can be sent automatically, etc. Naturally, this works best out-of-the-box with Exchange. I know I can add my own OpenID login system via an OpenID provider for SharePoint and get my users into the system. My question is, can anyone recommend the best way to go about making sure that events automatically find their way into users' calendars and e-mails on the Google Apps system? This would enable us to deploy SharePoint without worrying about migrating our e-mail system to Exchange first (Google Apps is more cost-effective for our needs and I'm required to keep it.)     I have a need of preparing web server (apache-php) performance report containing important metrics like CPU usage, disk io, memory usage on user basis. Couple of domains are hosted in the same server and they run from separate users using fcgi. The reason being sometimes some hosted applications take lots of cpu usage, making the server slow for other applications (running as separate users). i am planning to develop scripts for this, as i can't seem to find any simple utilities for this purpose. This script will take snapshots of the user wise metrics at defined periods say 15 minutes and record it. Any abnormalities will be reported via emails. How practical is that? also would be interesting to know what else need to be recorded.

  • OpenSSH connection trouble

    Hi, I'm trying to use Putty 0.60 to log in to an OpenSSH 5.3 server. Connections with openssh from another Linux server are possible, but Putty fails. Putty's event log tells me "software caused connection abort" right after the DH key exchange, the server log doesn't report anything (set to INFO). I analyzed the traffic with Wireshark and got a whole bunch of "TCP retransmission" and "TCP DUP ACK" after said key exchange. Sometimes I was able to log in, but at some point (usually < 2 min.) the connection froze without any logged messages. Sadly, I didn't capture a trace. The server is my own (Funtoo with genkernel and gentoo-sources 2.6.34), so I may tweak it, but I'd still like to know what causes the error. Any suggestions? Thank you!

  • Is a new thread in a Visual Studio test project aborted when the test ends?

    Hi, i have to do some message exchange with a 3rd party (in a website). When the client posts a page, i start the message exchange. When that doesn't succeed for some reason, i report this to the client by rendering the page with a message. On the background, in a separate thread, i start a process to send abort messages to the 3rd party. I can't do this while the user is waiting for the page to come back, because it might take a few minutes. But in a test project, the test ends when the message to the 3rd party is sent, and after the new thread is started. But it seems that the new thread also ends, when the test is done. Is that normal behaviour? I do start the thread in a new class with a reference to 2 objects from the class which tries to send the message in the first place, may that be a problem?

  • wildcard host name bindings for multiple subdomains in multiple sites on IIS7 with a single IP address

    Situation: I have a single windows 2008 server with a single public IP address. I have multiple domains with wildcard A records pointing to the single IP address. I need each domain to be hosted by a different web site. (i.e. www.domain1.com by site domain1site) I need domain1.com to act like www.domain1.com I need each site to be able to have multiple subdomains (i.e. www.domain1.com, abc.domain1.com, xyz.domain1.com) Not relevant yet here it goes, I plan to handle each subdomain by a different application hosted in the same site (i.e. application /xyz in domain1site) However I found out that IIS7 does not support creating web sites with wildcard host name binding and setting it without any subdomain (i.e. domain1.com) does not work, even for www.domain1.com. Is there a simple solution? Does any IIS Extension like Application Request Routing provide such capability?

    When managing custom Java applications hosted inside WebSphere Application Server, what JMX metrics do you find most useful for monitoring performance, monitoring availability, and troubleshooting problems? And how do you prefer to slice and visualize those metrics (e.g. chart by top 10 hosts, graph by app, etc.). The more details I can get, the better, as I need to specify a standard set of reports which IT can offer to owners of applications hosted by IT, which those owners can customize but many won't bother. So I'll need to come up with a bunch of generally-applicable reports which most groups can use out-of-the-box. Obviously there's no one perfect answer to this question, so I'll accept the answer with the most comprehensive details and I'll be generous about upvoting any other useful answer. My question is WebSphere-specific, but I realize that most JMX metrics are equally applicable across any container, so feel free to give an answer for JBoss, Tomcat, WebLogic, etc.

  • ProFTPd: Multiple Domain VirtualHosts on one IP address

    I have a webserver that we are giving a consultant FTP access to. For one domain hosted on that server he needs access to a "dev" directory and for a different domain hosted on that server he needs access to a different directory. I am trying to set this up with VirtualHosts, but I am having issues. Here is the VirtualHost bit of my proftpd.conf file: <VirtualHost www.example2.com> ServerName "Example 2" DefaultRoot /var/www/example2/dev </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost www.example1.com> ServerName "Example 1" DefaultServer on DefaultRoot /var/www/example1 </VirtualHost> When I FTP to either domain I always get the first VirtualHost, even if I FTP to the second domain.

Now I want to run the same site using multiple domains means when somebody open domain1.com, domain2.com ,domain4.com, so on urls, it should run the code/side that is at xyz.com I know one way to do this. I can host all these domains to the server where xyz.com is hosted so all domains will point to same peace of code/site. n above solution i need to hosted the domains manually.   • Why S3 website redirect location is not followed by CloudFront?

    I have a website hosted on Amazon S3. It is the new version of an old website hosted on WordPress. I have set up some files with the metadata Website Redirect Locationto handle old location and redirect them to the new website pages. For example: I had http://www.mysite.com/solution that I want to redirect to http://mysite.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/product.html So I created an empty file named solutioninside my bucket with the correct metadata: Website Redirect Location= /product.html The S3 redirect metadata is equivalent to a 301 Moved Permanentlythat is great for SEO. This works great when accessing the URL directly from S3 domain. I have also set up a CloudFront distribution based on the website bucket. And when I try to access through my distribution, the redirect does not work, ie: http://xxxx123.cloudfront.net/solution does not redirect but download the empty file instead. So my question is how to keep the redirection through the CloudFront distribution ? Or any idea on how to handle the redirection without deteriorate SEO ? Thanks

  • Can only connect to IIS site through localhost

    I'm building a web service for my company's iPhone application, and everything's been working smoothly by running tests through localhost on the development machine. I'm now in the phase where I need to test connections from other computers within the network, and any connection other than localhost gives me a 404. My internal IP, 127.0.0.1, and computername all get 404 when connecting from any computer, either the one the site's hosted on or any others on the network. Telnet can get through to port 80, and I've temporarily disabled all firewalls on this machine (I do not have control over the external firewall, but I'm only testing connections within the network) Does anyone have a clue why this is happening? I was able to connect to the web service from other computers when hosted on a Mac via Apache, but because I'm now using a SQL Server connection I'm restricted to using IIS for Windows Authentication. Googling only provided answers related to firewalls, and mine is disabled note: I cannot use Anonymous Authentication, but even in testing that it did not affect the issue.

    I'm in pain. We are moving to a SIP based VOIP system and for whatever reason, we could not get our hosted Asterisk solution to work with our Sonicwall. Our VOIP provider gave up and is recommending an open source vendor, pfSense. A little background: We have about 30 users in our network. We use a few IPSec VPN connections for remote networks. I would like, but don't need, application layer filtering. We're active internet users, so properly traffic shaping is probably a concern. How can I tell if an open source firewall will handle VOIP setup smoothly with a hosted Asterisk system?

  • CFEXCHANGECONNECTION error when username changes.

    We are attempting to connect to an Exchange server through CFEXCHANGECONNECTION on ColdFusion 9 to retrieve email. We can connect with a number of users. However, some users cannot connect. We end up with the following error: Cannot access Exchange server as a web application at <server> It turns out that the users who cannot connect either have a ampersand in there username or they have changed there username with CFLDAP. So, if I perform a CFLDAP on a working user and change the userPrincipalName and sAMAccountName the user will begin getting the error above. If I change it back to what it was to start with, the error will go away. Any ideas? EDIT The ampersand part seems to be misleading. Essentially we found the problem because of the ampersand. However, for working users who did not have an ampersand, the error will begins showing up if their username is changed to something that does not have an ampersand.

  • Is it safe to change the time on hosting VM server?

    So, I noticed there's about a 10 minute drift on my VM hosting server from what time it's supposed to be. In traditional environments, I would just restart the system (and change the BIOS time if necassary). The hosting server is Ubuntu 12.04. Undertsanding that some process could be time sensitive (NTP?), I was wondering how this might affect the relation between the host and hosted system (currently hosting 4: 3 Ubuntu 12.04 servers with one being a web server, and 1 Windows Server 2008 file server). I am using Virtual Box 4 with it's headless option. Ultimately, I am trying to avoid from shutting down the host (which ultimately mean shutthing down the other hosted systems). Is this safe?

    Our stock exchange going to implement FAST messaging in their system in order to reduced the bandwidth usage. We have already implement the FIX based application to trade with Stock exchange. In future we need implement FIX FAST in our application to communicate with them. I found that OPEN FAST is FAST based library. But I do not have any idea how to start with it.     I'm interested to know the general community feeling about the safety of running Drupal alongside bespoke, business critial ASP.NET MVC apps on a production server. Previously my employer's Drupal based 'visitor website' was hosted as a managed service with a 3rd party. While the LoB sites were hosted in-house. That 3rd party is no longer available so I'm considering my options: Bring Drupal in-house Find another 3rd party My concern is that I have little experience with Drupal administration (and no experience securing it) and that the addition of PHP to my IIS server poses a security risk. Is there a best practice that I can follow in this situation?

    We've developing a database driven (70%/30% read/write load) website using C#.NET, IIS and MS SQL Server 2008 to be hosted on Windows 2008. Due to contractual reasons our setup has to be hosted on our own physical/virtual servers instead of a cloud solution at this stage. Could someone outline or link to some best practices that would provide both high availability (priority at the moment) and eventually load balancing for our site.     I am trying to set up emailing from a java web application hosted on a linux server (Cent OS) in apache. Sendmail is working fine from the command line as root on localhost but when trying to send emails from the java web app (also on the same server from localhost) the following java exception is thrown. 501 5.0.0 HELO requires domain address EDIT: I have read that some people have found this is due to an incorrect hosts entry currently the hosts file contains 127.0.0.1 Centos-VPS localhost.localdomain localhost and i'm not sure what the Centos-VPS bit at the start is for but this is a clients hosted server so don't really want to break stuff EDIT see the RFC is helpful ... 501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments Now I know what the problem is! (note the sarcasm people.)

  • Forward name server for faster load times.

    I have a website hosted in China, which must be hosted there for various reasons. I also cannot change hosting companies for various reasons. It is a website that is accessed worldwide, however it has atrocious ping rates from everywhere but China. This is just an idea, so this may be impossible and/or not make any sense, but here it goes. A friend of mine has used proxies which helped his ping and load times from servers in Korea. Is there any way I can do this with my server? Perhaps a service which forwards my name servers to somewhere with much better global ping rates? Any other ideas which will make pings/load times fester other than this are greatly appreciated as well. Please keep in mind when answering: I cannot change servers I do not have access to configure the server itself.

  • How to test my outgoing emails in MS Outlook?

    Some people are complaining my html emails are showing up as plain text with html mark ups and others are complaining about unusual characters like 0=D 3=D. They appear to be using MS Outlook. I just installed MS Outlook and configured the imap settings to work with my gmail account. All my emails appear fine. So I suspect I need my MS Outlook to work with an MS Exchange server in order to produce the results my other Outlook recipients are seeing. But I'm not sure how to get access to an MS Exchange server (assuming that is the case). Can anyone recommend how I can reproduce the same email environment as my recipients such that I can get the same bugs they get? Thanks
