• poor font rendering in browsers on 12.04

  I'm using a Lenovo B570e. I've installed the mesa-utils for the graphic driver because it wasn't recognized by default. Now I have this: graphic card : Intel® Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2. I don't know if it's just my impression but I think all the images are a little bit pixelated and I think it have something to do with the drivers. Maybe is not the correct driver associated with it, I'm saying this because when I was on Windows 7 the name of the driver was something like " Intel hd graphics..." Any suggestions? Thank you! Later edit: This seems to happen only in browsers.

• Access Domain over Wireless

  I have an active directory server and all hard wired clients connect perfectly fine. However any wireless clients do not recognize that they are connected to the domain, despite the dns server being appropriately set to the domain controller for both wired and wireless connections. Also - both wired and wireless clients are on the same subnet. I am using a Verizon food actiontec router. What am I missing? For instance, this is the same computer connected first via an Ethernet cable and second via the wireless.

  i tried to post to this thread Hardware wireless switch has no effect after suspend and 13.10 upgrade for if i understand their question i am having the same problem but the answer option won't work for me and maybe i am not supposed to post there anyway, i dunno lol...ack when i come out of suspend, the wireless is disconnected with the only way to get it to reinitialize/be recognized is to do a full restart. at first i thought it was my gnome shell (for lock screen disappeared there with 13.10) but when i switched to the default ubuntu it's still doing it and it's kinda driving me nuts for i have to reopen all my files and browsers/tabs/windows everytime. i'm only a geekling so i don't know how to show the terminal stuff the above asker shows, but it sounds like the same issue and it only started with 13.10 upgrade a few days ago. any help would be much appreciated!!! thanks so much ser

• In 12.04, with my Linksys WUSB54G USB adapter I can see the networks, but cannot connect to any of them

  I recently loaded Ubuntu version 12.04 onto my computer, and I have a WUSB54G v4 USB wireless adapter. I first tried to get it to work by simply plugging my adapter into an open USB port. This seemed to work fine, it came up with a list of wireless adapters, so I clicked on the correct one and entered the security code. It looked like it was going to connect. It tried for about five minutes before I stopped it. I then decided to create a network as I also have one setup. I did this and it connected, only one problem, I couldn't get onto the internet. Please help me, I am new to Ubuntu and am totally lost.

• NetworkManager refuses to manage my WLAN interface

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6 on a brand-new Samsung NP900X4C. The installer detected the wireless adapter, took in the SSID and WPA passphrase, wrote these into /etc/network/interfaces and connected perfectly. Once installation was finished I wanted to switch to using NetworkManager to manage the wireless adapter, since this is much more convenient than fiddling with /etc/network/interfaces every time I find a new hotspot. Therefore I edited /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to set: [ifupdown] managed=true When I rebooted NetworkManager, the problems started: - The NetworkManager tray applet changed from saying device not managed to device not ready - I lost all internet connectivity as wlan0 would not associate to the Access Point - if I set managed=false in NetworkManager.conf and restarted both NetworkManager and networking services from the command-line, the Gnome desktop "semi-crashed" and lost all its Window Decorations, the panel, the launcher and basically became unusable. However if I restart the computer completely after setting managed=false, wlan0 once again works perfectly.

  I have a dual graphics card: intel 4000 and nvidia 630m... I installed bumblebee and intel drivers from their website. I thought the brightness problem will be solved by installing these drivers. But, brightness works only for two steps: that is, dim, medium, high... But, it doesn't increase step wise. Can you please help me sort this problem?   Asking on behalf of someone: I want to buy a new graphics card but do not know which would be best in terms of output, DVI or HDMI, the sound part of the HDMI is not really required, I just need something to go to my new 32 inch hd tv. It accepts both DVI and HDMI. I only need it for basic gaming but mostly as a media center to watch movies and tv shows on. Also for windows media center's TV application, I need a tv card, should I get a graphics card with bult in tv card, or a usb dongle??

• Joining two routers together, but I have no access to the second router, although I know it's IP address and Gateway

  I have temporarily moved into a rented apartment for 4 months, which has wireless. The trouble I am having is that the access points here are wifi only and no RJ45 and I need to use RJ45 to connect some equipment that I am working with. I have purchased an RT-N66U and installed Tomato (shibby ver. 1.28) and successfully replaced the existing access point, but now I want to enable the access point that I have replaced as it links wirelessly to 3 others. Can I plug in a cable from the access point to my RT-N66U and get it to access the internet via my router? I have no access to the existing wireless access point, and don't want to reset it as it's not mine. There is another router situated in the roof somewhere which I also have no access to, but it's supplying my RT-N66U internet and I most definitely have a double-nat, which although isn't the best way of doing things I am limited with what I can do. Any suggestions on routing tables, vlans etc would be helpful, but I have no experience in these fields before - but I know the tomato firmware can cater for this. My router is set to IP 10.0.1.1 and dhcp is 10.0.1.100-200 The wireless access point address was 192.168.1.2 but this was assigned by the router in the roof which has the address 192.168.1.1. There is a cable from this router going to a wall socket which I now have my RT-N66u attached to via the WAN port. I understand it's scruffy and it isn't the way to do things but I have tried to ask for the admin details but as the wireless network is looked after by a third party and nobody knows their details I am stuck with this dilemma. I could buy three wireless access points and replace the existing but this isn't what I want to do, and although I have installed plenty of DD-WRT wireless repeater bridges they simply don't work here for some unknown reason. The phone line here is very noisy too and I don't have the rights to install ADSL in a building that isn't mine, and 3G coverage isn't good enough either. Thanks for your time

• I can't connect to my network, except in safe mode

  My laptop cannot connect to my network all of a sudden except in safe mode. When it boots, it will show the networks available in the tray popup, but if I click connect on any, it says "Unable to connect" and the troubleshooter is useless. Shortly thereafter all the networks disappear. I have tried removing IPv6 support as I have seen that cause problems. No joy. I've also tried removing the wireless network adapter in Device Manager and reinstalling it, also no joy. I've also tried attaching a USB wireless adapter, and it has the same problem. If I boot in safe mode, then it has no problems at all. Three other devices in the house connect fine, so I am pretty sure it is nothing to do with the router. Any ideas what to check next? I am running Win7 Ultimate on a 2GHz Quadcore with 8GB RAM with a Broadcom 802.11n wireless card. EDIT: RE wired connections: What is very weird is that if i plug in a wired connection, then not only does it connect via the wired connection, but the wireLESS also starts working perfectly. And a soon as I unplug the wire, then the wireLESS stops working again! So it seems the wireless is right now working only in safe-mode, or when a wired connection is also plugged in.

• Two VGA monitors on Lenovo IdeaCentre H520 Desktop

  I recently bought a Lenovo IdeaCentre H520 computer and two VGA LED monitors. This particular PC has a dedicated NVIDIA Geforce GT630 video card and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 2500 video card. Both cards have VGA out. The Geforce card also has a HDMI out. I have installed Windows 8 and I can't seem to use both cards. I have connected both monitors, one to the VGA out of the Geforce card and one to the VGA out of the integrated card. I looked through the BIOS options for Video and I can only select the dedicated one, the integrate one or the Auto option. This kinda sucks. I was wondering what kind of options I have available. I have a VGA female to DVI A male adaptor, I was wondering if it could work if I can hook it to a DVI A female to HDMI male adaptor and plug one monitor into the VGA out of the Geforce video card and the other through both adapters to the HDMI out. Any chance this could work? I was looking online for a VGA to HDMI live cable but it's kind of expensive.

• At what point does the performance gap between GPU & CPU become so great that the CPU is holding back a system?

  I know that generally speaking for gaming performance the GPU is the primary factor which holds back performance, with everything else such as RAM/motherboard/PSU/CPU being secondary in importance to the graphics card. But at some point the other components ARE going to be significant in holding back the whole system! For instance nobody would be silly enough to play modern games with 512MB RAM and the very latest graphics cards (such as an HD7970) as I bet the performance increase over such a system with only 512MB but a mid range card would be non-existent! Thus it would be a "waste" for such a person to buy any high end graphics card without resolving first the system's other problems. The same point applies to other components, such as if it only had a Pentium II a current high end graphics card would be wasted on it! So my core question is how do you determine at what point for your system is spending on extra GPU power be completely "wasted"? (also, a slightly more nuanced question is trying work out at what point might the extra graphics power not be "wasted" but would be "sub optimal" value for money, when the expenditure should then be split around graphics card and other components. As obviously a gamer shouldn't always just spend on upgrading the graphics card! But needs to balance it out)

• Comparing 128MB GeForce 8600GT and 512MB Radeon X1650

  Hi, I'm trying to determine which is the better of these two video cards: 128MB Nvidia GeForce 8600GT card while the other has a 512MB ATI Radeon X1650 card. Both cards are the upper-level mid-range versions of their respective series. On the one hand, the ATI has substantially more VRAM, but the Nvidia supports D3D 10 and SM4.0 as opposed to D3D 9.0c/SM3.0 that the ATI supports. Also, I have always heard better things about Nvidia cards compared to ATI cards. I'm trying to find some advice on which one is better, but I can't find any actual comparisons or anything for these specific cards (the comparisons I can find are only similar ones like the X1650 Pro or 8600GT PCI-E), so I figure that what I need to know is whether the extra VRAM is that important. Looking at the ATI table and the Nvidia table seems to indicate that the Nvidia is better, but then again, the Nvidia table also says that the GeForce 8600GT is a PCI-E card with at least 256MB even though the card in question is an AGP with 128MB. (:-?) (It looks like the ATI card is not supported in Windows 7 while the Nvidia card is, which I suppose is also a factor, though not quite as immediately relevant as performance.) Any ideas? • NVIDIA 550M Drivers

  First to say, I am newbie, to the linux world and in situation where i have to get used to using ubuntu. My system is: i7-2630QM 8GB Ram with 750GB HD + NVIDIa 550M (1GB) Since i was facing problems with wubi - "slow Ubuntu", i installed it on a separate partition, of 80GB (10GB Swap, 40GB HOME, 30GB ROOT). The system was running fine, before I started using some "CFD" (Graphics Dependent) application. I needed to use "paraview" a graphics software, to design some engineering stuff. Following the installation problems, i installed something called "messa" on my system. The software works but, now my system is "dead-slow". Even with the computer at an idle state, the laptop, is pretty slow, and with huge annoying fan noise. I was tried running some similar applications with windows, and it turns out that its not a hardware, but has to do with the GPU drivers. Following some forums, I installed the "nvidia-current" and now everything is the same. I know, there are many solutions on this forum for nvidia-driver updates, but as you see, nothings working my way. • How do I link against Intel TBB on Mac OS X with GCC?

  I can't for the life of me figure out how to compile and link against the Intel TBB library on my Mac. I've run the commercial installer and the tbbvars.sh script but I can't figure this out. • Step-by-step execution for Intel AT&T assembler?

  Hello everyone, I'm writing a compiler that converts source code (written in a small imperative programming language) to Intel AT&T 32-bit assembler. I tend to spend a lot of time debugging, because of nasty offset-mistakes etc. in the generated code, and I would like to know if anyone knows of a tool to "walk through" the generated assembler code step-by-step, visualizing what's on the stack etc. I use Ubuntu Linux as my development platform, and I'm comfortable with the terminal -- a GUI-program would be nice though. Does it exist? Or is there a good reason it doesn't (maybe the problem isn't so straightforward..?) If you have good ideas for approaching debugging tasks in assembly code, I'll be glad to hear from you!

• Storing Credit Card Numbers in SESSION - ways around it?

  I am well aware of PCI Compliance so don't need an earful about storing CC numbers (and especially CVV nums) within our company database during checkout process. However, I want to be safe as possible when handling sensitive consumer information and am curious how to get around passing CC numbers from page to page WITHOUT using SESSION variables if at all possible. My site is built in this way: Step 1) collect Credit Card information from customer - when customer hits submit, the information is first run through JS validation, then run through PHP validation, if all passes he moves to step 2. Step 2) Information is displayed on a review page for customer to make sure the details of their upcoming transaction are shown. Only the first 6 and last 4 of the CC are shown on this page but card type, and exp date are shwon fully. If he clicks proceed, Step 3) The information is sent to another php page which runs one last validation, sends information through secure payment gateway, and string is returned with details. Step 4) If all is good and well, the consumer information (personal, not CC) is stored in DB and redirected to a completion page. If anything is bad, he is informed and told to revisit the CC processing page to try again (max of 3 times). Any suggestions?

• No Sound card detected in Sound Settings, although sound works

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on my laptop. When I go to Sound Settings while logged into my user, no sound card appears detected. In spite of this, the sound on my laptop is working ok, and I can use alsamixer just fine. The Unity sound indicator is dead, and this is quite annoying. If I login as guest, the sound indicator works just fine, I assume it's something related to my user's sound settings, but I cannot find what exactly. Any clues?

• Chainload boot of Ubuntu installed on 32GB SD card from legacy Grub boot on USB

  I have Ubuntu installed on a 32 GB SD card (in the Storage Expansion slot on an Acer Aspire One) with Grub2 installed in the same partition. I boot into legacy Grub on a USB drive and would like to boot by chainloading Grub2 from Grub (kernel/initrd or symlink booting would also be fine), but I haven't figured out how to do this from legacy Grub CLI. Output from blkid for this partition is /dev/mmcblk0p1: LABEL="Ubuntu" UUID="7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec" TYPE='ext4" / fdisk -lu information Boot indicator ID 83. Related entries in grub.cfg: search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set-root 7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-17-generic root=UUID=7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec... initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-17-generic I can't seem to replicate this in legacy Grub. Is there any way get Grub2 to chainload? How do I set root with UUID in legacy Grub? I prefer to boot from USB. Would Grub2 on USB (copying the grub.cfg generated during installation) be an option?

• Pulseaudio no sound card detected. Dummy output only

  I'm using 12.10 Quantal with Openbox and a .xinitrc script at login instead of a display manager. Its a relatively fresh install and I noticed when I opened pavucontrol the only output was a dummy one. I check around and it appears that my soundcard is physically installed but Pulseaudio isn't detecting it. I'm really unsure what I should do but any help getting my audio back would be appreciated. • gnome-shell failed to launch when dual monitor detected, nvidia card

  I installed a clean precise. I like gnome-shell so I installed it. It worked well with single monitor. But It does not work well when I go to office, plug my external monitor onto my laptop. I am using nvidia driver. Another colleague is using the same laptop, he can work well with dual monitors. His laptop is ATI graphic card. When I plug my extended monitor cable, I choose GNOME, but actually it goes to gnome 2 classic desktop environment, not GNOME 3. When I disconnect the extended monitor, restart X, I can login with GNOME3. Do I have to choose between GNOME3 and extended monitor? It's a hard choose.

I've managed to connect through a wireless network, I went to my favorite sites and was told I needed to install adobe flash player.This what I did players run and picture is good. But there is no sound! Then I've tried to play songs in Banshee, but no sound. I have checked everything in sound preferences including test speaker, there is sound. I have sigmatel sound card. • Wild card redirect in htaccess giving error this webpage has a redirect loop

  In my website I changed the directory name "vehicles-cars" to "vehicles-cars-for-sale". When I tried to redirect using a wild card redirect from my old directory name to new directory name in my web hosting cPanel account, I get an error every time I open pages from that directory: this webpage has a redirect loop The website is php. The problem is that that I have lots of pages with the old directory indexed in Google and they are getting duplicate content. I really need some advice on what to do with this problem.
