• Scientists Demonstrate First-Person Shooter Games Improve Vision

  Need an excuse to log a few more hours playing Call of Duty or Medal of Honor? Scientists demonstrated improved vision in test subjects after daily doses of first-person shooter games. Scientists at McMaster University took subjects who, as the result of surgery correcting congenital cataracts, had less than 20/20 vision. Subjects played Medal of Honor for a total of 40 hours over the course of 4 weeks before having their vision retested. The results? The CBC reports: The participants found improvements in detail, perception of motion and in low contrast settings. • Amazon Upgrades FreeTime; More Content for the Kid-Friendly Walled Garden

  Earlier this year Amazon introduced FreeTime, a walled garden area intended to provide a kids-only app gallery on the Kindle Fire. It was up to parents to populate the content but now, with the recent update, Amazon brings together unlimited books, movies, games, and apps. Intended for children ages 3-8 the upgraded service eschews the you-pick-it-all approach and goes with a hand-curated collection of games, educational apps, books and more. In addition to the pile of hand-curated content, FreeTime also has built in time limits and individual profiles for different children. Every Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, and Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ user can try out the service for thirty days without charge. • Fiber-Optic Cable Trick Brings Remote Triggering to Older Flashes

  Many older flashes lack for a jack to input a sync cable and rely exclusively on a simple slave mode triggered by the primary flash. This hack uses a piece of scrap fiber optic cable to trigger the flash in bright conditions. Using a flash as an optical slave indoors isn’t much of a problem, but if you introduce bright light (such as outdoor lighting conditions), the ambient light can overpower the small on-camera flash and render the optical slave function useless. To overcome this, Marcell over at Fiber Strobe (a blog dedicated to cataloging experiments in incorporating fiber optics into photography) came up with a simple work around. By using some foam crafting materials and tape, he whipped up a simple mount for a strand of scrap fiber optic cable to connect between the on-camera flash and the sensor on the slave flash. Once attached it works exactly like as sync cable would, except it’s transmitting a pulse of light instead of a pulse of electricity. Hit up the link below for more pictures and a build guide. • Tell Visual Studio 2012 UI Designers What to Fix

  If you hate the default interface themes in Visual Studio 2012 as much as I do, you have another outlet to vent. The UI designers have posted a survey where you can tell them how distracting and annoying you find the gray themes and black icons. You even get to comment on the (fixable) all-caps issue. The UI people didn’t listen much to the (largely hostile) developer feedback during the product design – or more likely were constrained by some edict from on high - but seem more willing now to create decent themes for updates. Please use this content in the spirit of our partnership, and do not share external confidential material (be aware of the OTN NDA). The workspace is organized by product categories in folders e.g. SOA or Business Process Management or Applications & Fusion Middleware. You can also use tags to navigate within the workspace. For large downloads we do recommend to map the workspace as a network drive or to use the ftp functions. Please be very careful when you use the workspace, as we granted everybody full access including to add and delete documents. Please do NOT delete any content. • Attunity Oracle CDC Solution for SSIS - Beta

  We in no way work for Attunity but we were asked to test drive a beta version of their Oracle CDC solution for SSIS.  Everybody should know that moving more data than you need to takes too much time and uses resources that may better be employed doing something else.  Change data Capture is a technology that is designed to help you identify only the data that has had something done to it and you can therefore move only what is needed.  Microsoft have implemented this exact functionality into SQL server 2008 and I really like it there.  Attunity though are doing it on Oracle. DISCLAIMER: This is a BETA release and some of the parts are a bit ugly/difficult to work with.  The idea though is definitely right and the product once working does exactly what it says on the tin.  They have always been helpful to me when I have had a problem with the product and if that continues then beta testing pain should be eased somewhat. In due course I am going to be doing some videos around me using the product.  If you use Oracle and SSIS then give it a go. Here is their product description.   Attunity is a Microsoft SQL Server technology partner and the creator of the Microsoft Connectors for Oracle and Teradata, currently available in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition.
