• choosing hosting for custom ecommerce site, shared, dedicated, what to look for?

  Hi, I have (almost) developed website for my client and now need to decide on hosting. Most of the users of the site will be located in Australia, and so am I and my client. Now, I want to consider everything before deciding on host and few questions comes to my mind: I cannot afford website being down, and all hosts say something like "99% uptime guranted". Should just that be enough or shall I ask hosts for some stats maybe? Does it make any difference if servers and whole hosting company is located in Australia or outside? I've been hosting few sites with JustHost.com on shared hosting (cheapest plan, servers in US I believe) and never seen any delays but could that be an issue? I would prefer Australian company so I can actually go to them and give them piece of my mind if something goes wrong, but US servers seem cheaper. Would share hosting do? Its ecommerce custom build php application, I know there are security issues with sessions etc on shared hosting. Will take precautions of course but could share hosting be an issue? Would dedicated be worthy option considering that my knowledge of server is very limited? I need to run php/mysql, with preferably unlimited bandwidth as with my experience I cannot tell what amount of traffic would be sufficient. Please let me know if I didn't provide you with enough information so you could answer my questions, will gladly explain further. In advance thanks for any answers :)

• USB drive was bootable, but no longer boots

  I'm trying to install a new OS onto a computer from a bootable USB stick. I previously installed Ubuntu Linux and it was a piece of cake -- I downloaded the ISO image, used UNetbootin to copy it to the USB drive and make it bootable, and that was that. Now, however, no matter what I try, I can't make the same USB drive bootable again! I've tried formatting it as FAT32 and NTFS. I've tried several different Linux distributions and Windows 7. I've tried using UNetbootin, Windows 7 USB Download Tool, WinToFlash, and manually making it bootable with diskpart/bootsect/bootrec. (Yes, I've tried bootsect /nt60 x: /force.) None of this seems to be working! When I try to boot from the drive, the machine reads from it (I can see the drive's LED blinking) and then gives me the same "Insert system disk and press Enter" message. (I've disabled booting from the hard drive.) Am I missing something I need to do to make the USB drive bootable again? I think it lost some pixie dust when I formatted it with the standard Windows formatting tool (it was quicker than deleting files), but I have no idea what it was or how to get it back. The USB drive in question is a SanDisk Cruzer 8GB SDCZ6. The computer I'm working on is running Windows Vista SP1.

• Nginx flv audio pseudo stream works but video is not loading

  I am working on a development server for a company & they want nginx webserver to work with. So the requirements for their company is, it should be capable of doing following things i.e hotlink protection, mp4 & flv pseudo stream & secure streaming. However nginx fulfills their requirements and i am configuring their server from past 2 days as i am new to this field so i've only acheived hotlinking prevention in past 2 days. But the problem on which i am stuck is flv pseudo streaming, to make work to mp4 pseudo stream it was just a piece of paper but i am really fuc*ed up with flv pseudo stream. I have converted my flv videos with flvmdi tools to insert many keyframes but the problem is , when i try to seek video from following keyframes that are generated by flvmdi i.e test.flv?start=2681223, video does not load but audio pseudo works fine. So it means no problem with my flv configuration in nginx.conf file. And the forum that i used to compile my nginx-1.2.1 is http://h264.code-shop.com/trac/wiki/Mod-H264-Streaming-Nginx-Version2 & by adding additional module --with-http_flv_module. This forum is really active, hopes i will resolve my problem as soon as you guys will provide me some guide.

• What's the best way to get a stored POP3 password out of Outlook 2007?

  If you have a password for a POP3 account in Outlook 2007 (Windows 7 Home Premium) and you then forget the password, how do you retrieve it? I tried copy-and-paste. No go. I downloaded Mail PassView, but upon installing it, AVG said it was malware, so I removed it. I eventually found the account details by opening up RegEdit, and found it in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook\ (...) but it was encoded in REG_BINARY. I Googled around and found various Visual Basic routines for decoding it but being a Unix dork I had absolutely no idea what to do with said scripts. By this point, I gave up and managed to get hold of the password by another means (it was written down on a piece of paper in the briefcase of the owner of the account - I know, it makes the inner sysadmin rage). I also attempted to write a simple POP3 server in Python and then get Outlook to log on to it, but that didn't really work out (it was about 4am at that point). For future reference, is there an easy and sensible way of doing this? Is Mail PassView actually evil spyware or was AVG just giving me a false positive? (Any chance of Windows 8 having something like OS X's Keychain?)

• LDAP groups not applying to filesystem permissions

  System is ArchLinux, and I'm using nss-pam-ldapd (0.8.13-4) to connect myself to ldap. The only time it does work is if I open it wide up allowing o=rwx. That's obviously not what I want, and I'm not able to figure out what my missing piece is. Thanks in advance.

• VBA Solution to VLOOKUP with Hyperlinks

  I am looking for some help with a VBA solution for preserving hyperlinks when using VLOOKUP on Excel (2010). I have a load of data on Sheet 1 for internal use only, and a cut-down version of this on Sheet 2. Instead of recreating Sheet 2 everytime, I am looking to have a working version which updates everytime Sheet1 is updated. Thus, I have used VLOOKUP on Sheet 2 so that only the desired info is returned on sheet 2. However, the problem was that sheet 1 contained in many cells Hyperlinks to external websites, and this would not pull through to Sheet2 using VLOOKUP. With some help, however, using the following VBA solution the hyperlinks now pull through: Function GetHyperLink(r As Range) As String If r.Hyperlinks.Count Then GetHyperLink = r.Hyperlinks(1).Address End If End Function And I am using the following formula in the relevant cell(s) in Sheet2: =HYPERLINK(GetHyperLink(INDEX('Sheet 1'!$B$1:$B$10001,MATCH(A4,'Sheet 1'!$A$1:$A$10001,0))),(VLOOKUP(A4,'Sheet 1'!$A$1:$B$10001,2,FALSE))) However, the problem is with formatting: every cell on Sheet2 is formatted blue and underlined, even although some of them do not contain a hyperlink! • Can we do a DNSSEC 101? [closed]

  Please share your opinions, FAQs, HOWTOs, best practices (or links to the one you think is the best) and your fears and thoughts about the whole migration (or should I just call it a new piece of tech?). Is DNSSEC just for DNS providers (name server operators)? What ought John Doe to do, who hosts johndoe.com at some random provider (GoDaddy, DreamHost and such)? Also, what if the provider's name server doesn't do automatic signing magic, can John do it manually? In a fire-and-forget way, without touching KSKs and ZSKs rollovers and updating and headaches?) Does it bring any change regarding CERT records? Do browsers support it? How come it became so complex? Why didn't they just merged it with SSL? DKIM is pretty straightforward, IANA/IETF could've opted for something like that. (Yes I know that creating a trust anchor would be still problematic, but browsers are already full of CA certs. So, they could've just let anyone get a cert for a domain for shiny green padlocks, or just generate one for a poor blue lock, put it into a TXT record, encrypt the other records and let the parent zone sign the whole for you with its cert.) • Getting old bluetooth headset out of standby on Windows 7

  I think this is the problem, and if not, I'm open to suggestions. I have an old Jabra BT200 that I used to use on my phone. When a phone call was coming in it would beep using its own noises (meaning the phone never rang inside the headset) and then I could push the 'answer/hang up' button and sound and mic would start working. I have now paired it with Windows 7, and it looks good. Under the playback menu I have 'Bluetooth Hands free Audio / Jabra BT200 (Mono Audio) / Ready', and under the recording menu I have 'Bluetooth Audio Input Device / Jabra BT200 (Mono Audio) / Ready'. However when I try to test the speakers Windows sends a sound, but I never hear it, and when I talk in the mic, Windows never hears me. If I right click either the Bluetooth mic or speakers there's an option to 'Connect', but it's grayed out and I cannot click it. As the final piece of knowledge I have, my headset blinks once every 3 seconds when it's in standby and I can't get that to change. If everything was working it should blink once every second at which point I think all of my problems would be fixed. Hence my issue: I can't seem to get my headset out of standby. On my headset I've tried sending it test noises and then pressing the 'Answer' button, but still nothing. The headset beeps when I press it, so it works, it just doesn't ever come out of standby. Is there maybe some way to trick my headset into thinking it's getting a phone call from my computer?

• Dead Linux server - need help and options

  All, I have a Dell PE 1950 w/ 2 SATA drives in a software RAID1. OS is CentOS 5.5 (2.6.18.x). Starting this afternoon we received HW errors (something on the bus is bad, E171F) and the machine became unresponsive. We hard booted and it came back up for about 5 hours but then it happened again. I'm trying to figure out our options. Unfortunately we do not have similar hardware but I have a small desktop that I can use. I was contemplating putting one of the drives into the desktop and then starting it up. My goal was to then P2V it using Vmware converter but apparently the free v5.x doesn't support hot cloning/converting on a RAID volume, only the Enterprise 4.x version of Converter does. My questions are: 1.) Is putting a single drive out of a RAID1 pair into another piece of HW is safe? Based on my research and understanding it appears to be but would like confirmation. 2.) Is there any work around to the Vmware Converter not supporting RAID volumes during a hot clone/convert session? 3.) Are there other options I'm overlooking? • More advanced 'Apple Automator' like software?

  What I'm looking for is a program similar to Automator or A Better Finder Rename but more extensive / advanced. In my situation we have two files with the same name, one is a MOV the other an XML. We want to use some of the metadata within the XML to rename both files. Then we want to re-arrange the contents of the XML file so that it is compatible with another piece of software we use (I think this process is called mapping?) Essentially some software that takes a bunch of variable from existing file and performs file actions to them. I imagine this would be an easy task using apple-script, but I'm wondering if there is a OSX application similar to Automator that can do the above? Questions are: Is there software that can do the above? Could Automator achieve this? What is the technical name of this kind of process? If no such software exists, what would be the best kind of script to use? eg. Make an Apple Script, python script etc.

• How do I send e-mails with attachments to a Microsoft WebTV user?

  my friend uses Microsoft WebTV (e-mail address ends with @webtv.net) and I'd like to send him an e-mail with a picture attached to it. We went through a series of attempts one of which ended up a success, all others a failure. He just can't see my e-mail in his mailbox, when it contains an attachment. E-mails without attachments always go through all right. What seemed to help in the first successful case, was that he added my e-mail address to his address book and my e-mail suddenly showed up. Seemed to have been delivered before but hidden. He kept my address in his address book however, it didn't help with the following trials. He did look into his junk folder, nothing there. I made sure the file name contains no spaces. It's a regular jpeg, named something-like-this.jpg I downsized it to have only about 50k, as I've read somewhere that that's a limit. I actually doubt this piece of information, because I think the successful attempt was larger. webtv.net contains zero information. I watched their video demo for the e-mail client, so I at least know how the user interface looks like. I've never laid my hands on the real thing. I'm an advanced user myself (a programmer) but I can't wrap my mind around this. He on the other hand, is a very technically inexperienced user and because he's half way across the globe, I can't come and look over his shoulder. He doesn't have a computer, afaik there's no way I could see what he sees. Any ideas on how to debug this? Thanks for your time, guys. P.S. • Apache using 100% CPU, once again

  Recently, apache2 started using 100% of CPU power: top gives me From other, similar threads, I took the tip to use mod_status. Aside from HUGE amounts of NULL requests, it gives: CPU Usage: u2.16 s1.32 cu0 cs0 - .0835% CPU load 1.2 requests/sec - 17.6 kB/second - 14.6 kB/request 8 requests currently being processed, 42 idle workers The access and error logs do not show anything surprising or intriguing at all. Note the .8% CPU usage. Another tip was to use strace: root@server:~# strace -p 1956 Process 1956 attached - interrupt to quit restart_syscall(<... resuming interrupted call ...> And remains like this for at least half an hour, without producing any additional output. Restarting apache fixed the problem for less than a second The server runs a few custom python scripts aswell as a django-powered website on apache2 (up-to-date), but even turning the scripts off (or not having them active in the first place) did not change anything. After I stopped apache and powered my server off, powered it on a few minutes afterwards and restarted all my services, the CPU usage remained low for several hours, just in order to pop up again randomly (?) The DigitalOcean CPU stats on my server are: You can see how the CPU usage was super high for almost half a day until I restarted the bot - just to remain stable for several hours and then pop up again. I am completely at a loss of words and don't know what I could do to find out what piece of my code is giving me these problems or if apache itself is the cause... Therefore I would greatly appreciate any hints to the questions: What else can I try to do? Which things might I not have checked? Is this definitely in my own code? How do you find what part of python code crashes an app via a infinite loop or similar?

• How to optimize a postgreSQL server for a "write once, read many"-type infrastructure ?

  Greetings, I am working on a piece of software that logs entries (and related tagging) in a PostgreSQL database for storage and retrieval. We never update any data once it has been inserted; we might remove it when the entry gets too old, but this is done at most once a day. Stored entries can be retrieved by users. The insertion of new entries can happen rather fast and regularly, thus the database will commonly hold several millions elements. The tables used are pretty simple : one table for ids, raw content and insertion date; and one table storing tags and their values associated to an id. User search mostly concern tags values, so SELECTs usually consist of JOIN queries on ids on the two tables. To sum it up : 2 tables Lots of INSERT no UPDATE some DELETE, once a day at most some user-generated SELECT with JOIN huge data set What would an optimal server configuration (software and hardware, I assume for example that RAID10 could help) be for my PostgreSQL server, given these requirements ? By optimal, I mean one that allows SELECT queries taking a reasonably little amount of time. I can provide more information about the current setup (like tables, indexes ...) if needed.

• Create custom launchers in GNOME 3

  I'm using Debian testing, and I have been switched to GNOME 3 by the Debian update yesterday. I'm not very comfortable with the UI. I wanted to customize everything like I had it with GNOME 2, but I simply couldn't find any way to change preferences like I'm used to. I've digged some, but all answers I could find did not help me achieve my goals. So please, if anyone knows the solution to this I'd be thankful: 1) I want several launchers that launch terminals, with different arguments and different coloring/title. I have searched everything and there seems to be no menu, no right-click, nothing which is standard in any UI I know. How can I create several launchers in this bar on the left side that launch the same application, just with different parameters? With GNOME 2 this was a piece of cake. 2) I want to switch between different terminals using ALT-TAB. Right now, I'm always just getting to the same, already-opened terminal. When I open two terminals by simply creating the second one by issuing xterm &, I still get one Terminal entry with ALT-TAB, and I have to navigate with cursor keys or mouse wheel to select one of the two xterminals. Instead, I want to open a new terminal when I click the quick launch terminal icon from the bar on the left side of the screen and navigate through them like on KDE/GNOME 2/Windows/any reasonable UI. Can this be done? 3) Is there a trick to make bluetooth devices work like on GNOME 2? Right now, my BT keyboard won't pair anymore, which, as you can imagine, makes me pretty angry. and, if anything fails: 4) How can I switch back to GNOME 2 again? :-) Honestly, who did design this? What were they smoking? I feel like I'm not allowed to do anything except start one of any application that has an icon and just with the default parameters. That can't be true, right? I feel massively restrained by this stuff :(

• Determining physical location of data on a disc

  Does anybody know of a way to find out where, physically on a CD or DVD a given piece of data would be located? I am trying to watch a DVD at the moment, and am about half-way through, but it keeps dying at a specific spot in the film, presumably because of a scratch. I have a repair kit, but I don’t know where to focus my repair because there are several scuffs and scratches on the disc and I have no way of knowing which one is causing the issue. Obviously, cleaning all of them is inadvisable because not only does it waste the consumable materials in the kit, but not all of them are a problem, and by working them, some may become unreadable. Moreover, just because I am half-way through the movie does not mean that it would be half-way from the hub to the edge for several reasons: Discs have more data towards the outer edge than the inner edge (circles are more mathematically complicated than rectangles) The disc is not completely filled up (and even if it were, the movie itself would be be using it all, there are extras and such) Because in this particular case it is a commercial DVD, it is also dual-layer which further complicates manual determination As such, I am trying to find a program that can let me identify a file (or part thereof), cluster, etc. and show me a picture of where on the CD/DVD it would be located. That way, I can look at the disc and fix any scratches that correspond to that distance from the hub. For example, the image below might indicate where on a disc a couple of files or range of clusters would be located, so by looking for anomalies in those areas (rotating as necessary), the correct one can be identified. I’m sure it can be done since at least one form of copy protection (DPM) uses it and DVD-lab Pro includes a “DVD Topology” feature to do this.

• Recover file from NTFS after it was formatted twice

  I'm running Linux Mint and have a 2TB drive that I formatted as NTFS. I copied ~120GB of files from another computer to the 2TB drive, removing the files from the other computer as I did so. When they were all on the 2TB drive, I zipped them up as file "Gold.tar.gz". Then I reformatted the 2TB drive as ext3 in a moment of absolute stupidity. I formatted the 2TB back to NTFS, but of course everything is gone. Here is what I have tried: TestDisk -- won't find any lost partitions or undelete files, just the current empty one PhotoRec -- seems to only find some broken text files and misidentify their extensions. It never finds the 100's of avi files I had (before the 120GB copy, I already had 750GB on the drive full of avi files) or anything else that would show me it's working properly. Using dd I recovered the first 512MB of the drive and went hunting through it. I found all of the file as MFT entries, including the file "Gold.tar.gz" in a 2048 byte MFT record. I'm looking now for some way of either (1) telling PhotoRec to look at that record, or (2) analyze the MFT record myself and discover the sectors holding the data; I can piece it all together using dd and join the binary output if it's fragmented. One last thing - from the moment I got this drive a few days ago to the incident, there were only file copies made to it and no deletes. I formatted as NTFS, then copied thousands of files, then made a tar.gz, then reformatted to ext3, then reformatted to NTFS again. I'm hoping that the size of the drive and fact that there was no file modification/deleting happening makes for minimal file fragmentation.

• What does SQL Server's BACKUPIO wait type mean?

  I'm using Sql Server 2008 ("R1"), with some maintenance plans that back up my databases to a network share. Some of my backup jobs show long waits of type "BACKUPIO". Of course it seems like this is an I/O subsystem limitation, but I'm skeptical. Perfmon stats for I/O on the production (source) server are well within normal trends for that server. The destination server shows a sustained 7MB/s write rate, which seems incredibly low, even for a slow disk. The network link is gigabit ethernet and nowhere near saturated. The few docs I've turned up about BACKUPIO indicate that it's not specifically a wait on I/O, surprisingly enough. This MSFT doc says it's abnormal unless you're using a tape drive, which I'm not. • How do I use command line and wmctrl to make a window larger than the screen to get a huge screenshot?

  I use a program which makes a large image which I have to scroll to view. The program has no way to save the image, and I have no access to the source to modify it. The only way I have to get the image from the program is by screenshot. My goal is to save the full size image without having to piece together individual screenshots. I'm using this script to try taking a screenshot: #!/bin/bash window=$(wmctrl -l | grep "Program$" | awk '{print $1}') wmctrl -v -i -r $window -e '0,0,0,6030,5828' wmctrl -i -a $window import -window $window ~/Desktop/screenshot.png This uses wmctrl to get the window id ($window) for a window named "Program". It then tries to resize the window to the desired dimensions. It uses imagemagick (import) to save a screenshot.png on the user's Desktop. All of this works except the resize step. I can resize the window using wmctrl -r -e, but sizes greater than the screen size don't work. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and the Gnome Desktop. I run two monitors, but I've tried this with one of them disabled. Is there a way to resize the window larger than my screen to get a huge screenshot?

• VNC Server that can be used from command line?

  I'm looking for a replacement for a custom vnc server that we have been using in my company for a long time. I need a simple executable that can be run from command line by an IT Support software without the user noticing it (our application will warn the user, we don't want him to see we are using that VNC sever). I need it to support Windows and preferably also OSX. The only option I've found is UltraVNC, but I can't configure it from command line to accept loopback connections without authentication. We have already a whole VNC Viewer + VNC Repeater + Bouncers architecture, and the only missing piece is the VNC Server. Do you know any solution you could suggest me? I'm afraid I'll end up developing a new VNC server myself, may be based on an open source one. EDIT: When I said I don't want the user to notice this VNC server, I should have added that I don't want him even noticing the installation. So better if it can be installed silently or can be executed as a portable executalbe (for instance, ultravnc can be installed and ran as a service from command line, or simply executed quietly, with only a notification icon; its problem is that I can't run it without authentication).

• Over gigabit connection, Teracopy does 31MB/s, but Windows 8 does it at ~109MB per second?

  I got my brain-melting first taste of Gigabit networking today, between my 2011 MacMini and Windows 8 Pro desktop connected via Cat.5e to Linksys WRT320N(sporting dd-WRT). After making sure that the line speed on both systems showed 1Gbps, I proceeded to copying a 2.4GB MP4 from the Mini to the Win 8 desktop (SMB sharing). Although satisfied with the 30-34 MB/s that Teracopy was showing (that was a proper step-up for me from 10 MB/s), I still was curious about this massive difference in the advertised and real-world speed. 2 hours of Google had me believing that there were other factors that resulted in less speed, SMB being one. So just for the sake of doing it, I iPerf'd both the systems and guess what that showed - around 875mbps on both systems! I then stumbled upon this little piece of info after which I turned off Teracopy and copied the same file through Windows 8's regular copier. 109 MB/s. Molten brains :) What exactly is causing this? And can I enable such speeds via Teracopy? I really dig the extra features that Teracopy has, will surely miss them now :D

• InstallShield or Windows installer corrupted

  Just recently I've been unable to install any software on my Windows 7 machine. Anything that uses InstallShield or the Windows installer will just hang or give a weird error. I noticed there will be many duplicate isbew64.exe processes (like 25) that launch and then just sit there or else a lot of msiexec.exe *32 processes, depending on what I'm trying to install. One piece of software specifically is the Logitech Harmony software. It gives me an *is_string_not_defined* error, saying c:\program files (x86)\:\ the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. The other thing I was trying to install was Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and that just hangs as well, and then just leaves all the Windows installer processes running in the background after I quit the install process. Very odd. I've checked well and googled these issues, it doesn't appear to be any sort of malware issue. I feel like it's related to some kind of corrupted installer application. I've rebooted, deleted the InstallShield folder in program files/common files as some places online suggested but to no avail. I have no idea what to do, any ideas?

• Simulate a DFS share for a user not on domain with a folder in path

  I have a consultant whose computer is not on the domain and needs to access various network resources. Unfortunately while adding a computer to the domain is a difficult bureaucratic process (and would disallow much of his development software from even running given the domain restrictions), we can allow him to have credentials to access network resources. As such, he accesses various network resources via NET USE etc. without using DFS. There is one piece of software which requires him to have the same hardcoded path as other domain users but that path is a DFS path which he can't map (i.e., the software checks the path at runtime and will only run if it matches the registered path and will reject it in the context of using a DFS versus conventional machine path) I was wondering if there's some method to simulate the DFS path without actually using DFS. e.g., the path the software needs to see is "\ABC\DFS\software\app.exe" whereas the non DFS path is "\DEF\Software\app.exe" while I could make his hosts file point DEF to ABC, I'm not sure if I can somehow make it point there with the DFS "folder" as well are there any methods for this short of making changes to the AD to allow him to use DFS or add him to the domain (both of which are politically/technically challenging sadly)? • Application that will identify percentage of your system disk bandwidth used on a user-application by user-application basis?

  I always (subjectively) feel my computer is far too slow (however fast it is), and so I'm always looking for ways to measure and understand what my computer is actually doing, that is making it seem "slow" to me. It has been my observation that my software-developer workload is most often disk-bound (I am waiting for Disk I/O) more than CPU bound. What has made it worse, is that I am using a corporate PC that has in-memory active-scanning anti-virus software that I do not have control over, and also some IT department mandated services that seem to suck up a lot of available hard-disk bandwidth. The best tool I have seen (in Windows 7) is the Resource Monitor which I usually acess from the button in the task Manager. The disk IO page, however, seems to label Disk Activity at a very low level (for example, showing the Volume Shadow Storage, which is flushing information obviously written by something ELSE other than VSS itself, and then writes to Pagefile.sys, which are obviously due to Virtual Memory faults in some application). What I would like to know is if a utility exists that can add up all direct disk input and output by user-level process, or find the process or service that caused VM or VSS activity. In that way, I hope, you could establish a real idea of how much of your computer's precious disk subsystem bandwidth is attributable to a particular application. here's a scenario: MyApp.exe writes 100k/s and reads 100k/s directly. VSS ends up writing another 100k/s. pagefaults caused inside MyApp.exe cause another 100k/s of writes. So the total "cost" of MyApp.exe running, during a period of time (let's say 1 second) is 400k/s, whereas you can only directly observe half of that, in Resource Monitor. Is there a smarter disk-IO watching piece of software I can use?
