• Windows server 2008 R2 IIS7 file permissions

  Hey all i am trying to figure out why i can not access a index.php file from within the wwwroot/mollify/backend directory. It keeps coming up with this: Server Error 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. I've given all the permissions (Full control) to the wwwroot directory i could think of (IUSR, Guest, GUESTS, IIS_IUSRS, Users, Administrators, NETWORK, NETWORK SERVICE, SYSTEM, CREATOR OWNER & Everyone). I also added index.php to the "Default Document" under my website settings in IIS 7 manager. What else am i missing? Thanks! David

• Windows 2008 R2 AWS CloudFormation Elastic beanstalk configuration

  I'm looking for some configuration advice. I have a need for a load balanced windows environment with shared media across all instances that are hosting the app. The best explanation i can give is that there will be multiple Windows 2008 server with IIS hosting the app going through an ELB to load balance. Users must be able to upload content (images, video etc...) to the site that will be hosted. When a user uploads media it needs to be kept on a shared location so all windows IIS instances can access the files, I can't host the files on S3 because of the app architecture so they need to be in a place where all IIS server will have access. In addition I need to run an update each IIS server instance that updates a local memory cache when SQL data is updated. I was thinking of a configuration like this: [ELB] - [Win 2008 IIS (multiple servers)] - [Win 2008 File & SQL Server(possibly RDS?)] Does this configuration make sense? If not could you provide an idea of how I should configure it. Thanks in advance

  Hi all I've been playing around with the WMI performance counters for Hyper-V. Of interest to me are the Virtual NIC bytes/sec input and output counters. I notice that the results are very "spikey". Over what time period is the latest counter averaged? I'm trying to calculate total traffic volume per VM, but sometimes a very high instantaneous poll result is inflating the result as I only poll the result each minute. I would prefer to read a 'bytes total' counter instead of a 'bytes/sec' counter - is there such a thing? Thanks Acendo

• Is it easy to update ubuntu beta to ubuntu final release?

  At this moment I am preparing a virtual server to host a web application which needs php5.3 The virtual server base image is always Hardy (8.04 LTS). There is no php5.3 until the upcoming release in a few days: Lucid (9.04 LTS). I am seeing to options: - waiting until the final version is released and then start preparing this server - Now upgrading to the beta (do-release-upgrade --devel-release) and when the final release has come upgrading to that For time constraints I would prefer the second option. I only can't find whether it will be easy to upgrade from a beta to the 'clean' final release. Is this possible in an easy way. Will it have any drawback for security or will there be any traces left of it being ever a beta release? Note: the server will not go into production before the LTS is really installed.

  So here is my current objective: I need to create two guest instances of Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 in VirtualBox on a WindowsXP host. (This is needed for communications later on.) (this step is almost done) I need to establish networking between all three OS's, the host and two guests (Guest1 - Host - Guest2). I know that generally, to establish networking between Windows host and Ubuntu guest, we set up a bridge connection. But here there are two guests, and primarily I need networking between the two guests (Ubuntu to Ubuntu). So will there need to be a change in tap0 and tap1 interfaces when we set up a bridge, or is there a better way to implement this? Please explain the procedure.

• Timesync on HyperV with CentOS 6.2

  I've got a CentOS VM (release 6.2) running under HyperV. I have integration services installed (part of base now), and CentOS shows the current clocksource is hyperv_clocksource, however my time in the VM is about 10 minutes fast after a week of uptime. My understanding of the new IC and plugable clocksource is that this shouldn't happen any more. Is there any additional configuration necessary to get the plugable clocksource to "work?" I know there are plenty of links about setting kernel options to PIT and various stuff like that, but those all seem to pre-date the integrated clocksource support, and as I understand it shouldn't be needed anylonger. Nor should ntpd nor adjtimex.

  I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.

Both the IP office systems I have set up used all Digital phones. The new system we are putting in place will actually use IP phones for the first time. After tyring to track down some general documentation on my own, I was not able to find anything that left me feeling comfortable about setting up IP phones on an Avaya IP Office 500. When remotely logged in, they can disconnect the wireless connection, perform a few tests, and then reconnect the wireless connection. In general, the LAN connection would just be used for the remote login, the wireless connection would be used for performing tests including using a web browser to test certain web sites, etc. How can we successfully configure the server to support 2 network connections like this? (A regular LAN connection + a wireless connection). And also make sure that the tests we perform using the browser utilize the wireless connection for the outgoing internet activity.

  Using VirtualBox, Is there a limit of two serial ports per VM? I'm currently engaging in a task that requires more than two, but less than or equal to four ports. I'm at a loss of what to do to get COM3 and COM4 up? How do I do it if the Virtual Box GUI doesn't currently support more than two serial host devices? Can I configure them external to the GUI? Is there a hard-cap on two devices? And, if so, for the love of god, please entertain me with the reasoning? I know Windows and Linux don't impose such a limit, it would seem awkward to impose it in virtualization layer. This is for cheap dial-in project with proprietary Windows tools. I'm using a Quatech serial multiport adapter to provide the ports to multimodems.

• How can I make gitosis distinguish between two users with the same username

  I have a gitosis system that seems to be working correctly except for a common problem we run into where I can't distingush permissions between two users who have the same username, but different hosts. For example: [email protected] 's SSH key is in the key folder. And so is [email protected] 's SSH is also in the key folder. These two jsmith's are two different people on two different computers. However, when I configure them in the gitosis.conf file with the usernames jsmith@computer or jsmith@machine, it seems like each user just gets the same permission. Can gitosis not distinguish the full username (name and host)? If not, how do I deal with multiple users accessing our system with common usernames? Thanks for any help.

  I have connected my Windows live account(Microsoft account), Facebook account and Google account with Windows 8. On "People" Windows 8 app it shows as connected to Microsoft, Facebook, Google, whereas in "Messaging" app its connected only to Microsoft and Facebook. While I can chat with Facebook online contacts and messenger's, I cant find my Google online contacts only on Messaging app. Seems like Google supports only sharing of contacts and not chat as of now. Does anyone knows how to get Google chat on Windows 8 Messaging?

• Membership in two domains

  Hello! I would your suggestions for an effective solution for a person, who needs to access resources in two Windows domains and wants to use one computer. It's about our CEO, who has accepted a second position in another company. Accessing files and folders isn't big problem. The greatest challenge I see is that he wants to conveniently access Exchange accounts in both companies; he would like to send and receive mail in single Outlook if possible (two profiles?) There is also a challenge with calendars: he would like to have one calendar for all activities from both Exchange accounts. Creating a POP3 account for accessing second Exchange server is a last resort, because obviously there is a problem with scheduling meetings and other calendar related tasks. Forwarding and receiving all mail/tasks on primary Exchange server is inconvenient because simple replying to original sender is disabled; and also when manually changing the recepient, he will receive mail from the wrong address. We were considering Virtualisation, that is setting up an instance of virtual machine inside existing installation and then joining this virtual computer to a second domain. Then installing another MS Outlook. This would of course mean two different Outlook accounts, two different calendars, but would at least enable our CEO to access all information from a single laptop. Does anyone have any other idea? I know setting up two domains on a single computer is a no-go (without much hacking at least), but effective workarounds are appreciate. The thing I am looking here is high usage/efficiency/productivity, but also as elegant solution from the administration point of view.   I am trying to add a domain user. I am doing the following. Expand Security Right click on Logins Select New Login... Login name select search Click on location and select entire directory Type username Click checkname The name goes underlined and add some more info Click OK Click OK I then get the following error: I have found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324321. The Login does exist There is no Duplicate security identifiers Authentication failure I don't think is happening as I can browse AD Case sensitivity should not be the problem as I am doing the checkname and it is correcting it. Not a Local account Name resolution again I can see the AD I have rebooted the server (VM) and the issue is still happening. Any ideas? • How do I secure Sql Server 2008 R2

  I have both a dedicated and a VPS (from Fasthosts) virtual server - the web sites/applications I run on these, access Sql Server stored on the same web server. Until now, I have logged onto Sql Server on both the deidicated and VPS server, from Sql Server Management Studio - until I noticed in my server application logs, multiple attempts to logon to Sql Server using the 'sa' username, but failed password. So someone/bot is trying hard (repeatedly every couple of hours, for approx 20 attempts during each instance) to log on... so obviously I have to lock down access to Sql Sever remotely. What I have done is gone into Configuration Manager, and in Sql Server Network Configuration - Protocols for Sql2008 and also in Sql Native Client 10.0 Configuration - Client Protocols - I have diabled Named Pipes, TCP/IP (and VIA by default). I have left Shared Memory enabled. I also disabled in Sql Server Services, the Sql Server Browser. Now the only way I can manage the databases on these servers, is by logging on to them via Remote Desktop. Can anyone confirm if this is the correct way of stopping anyone maliciously logging on to Sql Server? (I'm not a DBA or security expert - and there are hundreds of articles advising all different ways - but I was hoping for the experts here to confirm, or otherwise, if what I've done is correct) Thank you, Mark

• SQL 2008 R2: Data\Log partions

  I have a SQL Server setup that a previous IT person set up with a 2TB data partition and a 1TB log partition. The OS partition is 244GB and SQL is installed on a separate 1TB partition. We have an additional 8TB of storage that I would like the new IT staff to bring on line. He wants to create 4 new 2TB data partition. I see this as confusing. Can't we just backup the current data partition, blow it away, and create a new 10TB data partition I'm responsible for administering the data on the server but am not allowed to do the setup myself. This is a GIS server running ArcGIS Server with around 60 geodatabases ranging from 20BG to a couple that may grow to over a TB. So, 5-2TB data partitions or 1-10TB partition. Thanks for the advice.
