• Trouble installing Pokerstars on a Live USB without Persistence through WINE

  I need to install any form of Texas Hold Em' on a Lubuntu Live USB that doesn't have persistence. I was able to download PokerStars.net by emulating the .exe (a windows type file) using WINE for Linux (Lubuntu). But, when I try to install, I have no room. The only place on the Live USB is in the root folder which is set to read-only. Is there any way I can change the read only properties of the Live USB while it's in use? So, to recap. I am running Lubuntu 13.04 and can't start in Persistent mode. When I start normally everything worked fine. I proceeded to Chromium and successfully downloaded Wine and the Pokerstars.exe. I right clicked the downloaded fiel then clicked Wine, the installer loaded fine. There are about 8 different disk icons and only the one containing system files is active. Is there any way I can use the terminal to install it to Root. Thanks in advance for your answer/alternate method (without having to buy another USB to install it to).

• Another VSeWSS Error Resolved (List Template not installed on Farm)

  Ran into a minor snag today trying to deploy a project with VSeWSS 1.3 - during the deployment it gave me the following error: Error    32    VSeWSS Service Error: Feature '2ade6552-200e-4425-8af5-f1f50c115b7e' for list template '10001' is not installed in this farm.  The operation could not be completed. At first glance, it looked my features were not installing in the correct order because the solution was installing a list that required a custom list definition before the custom list definition was being installed.  After switching the order in the WSP view (View -> Other Windows -> WSP View) -- you can use the up and down arrows on the view pane to switch feature installation order - I had the same error. I decided to try deleting the list, but upon visiting the list in the web interface I received a similar error about how the feature was not installed on the farm.  As such, I could not delete the list through the web interface.  Fortunately, the stsadm.exe tool worked just fine: stsadm.exe -o forcedeletelist -url <urltolisthere>

• Windows 7 and Ubuntu Boot/Corruption Problems

  I searched around, but I couldn't find the answer to why Windows 7 Ultimate 64x and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64x could'nt live together happily on my Asus G1s-X1 laptop. I had Windows 7 Ultimate 64x installed on the laptop when I bought it (bought it used, it comes with Vista new) and I wanted to try out Ubuntu and see what all the hype about the free OS was. I installed Ubuntu on an external 80GB iomega HDD with Windows 7 on my main drive. They both work fine for about 2-3 weeks, until Ubuntu suddenly is unable to boot. A few days after Ubuntu fails, Windows corrupts majorly (winload.exe, ntkrnlpa.exe, and various others corrupt randomly) and Windows Recovery Environment is completely useless. Booting to a live USB with Ubuntu and trying to reinstall it fails, and trying to wipe the main drive and install it there fails as well (something about my graphics card.) I managed to get Windows 7 Ultimate 64x back up and running (after many disk formats) but now I am left with a broken (and invisible) Ubuntu installation on the external drive. Is there any way to get the broken and non-bootable Ubuntu installation off the HDD without damaging or erasing the many files and programs installed and stored on the 80GB drive?

• How to distinguish doc, ppt, xls files, without looking at file extension

  So I was wondering how would you differentiate ppt, xls and doc files from each other in linux regardless of extensions. I tried 'file' but from the looks of it, all of MSOffice files are categorized under the same file type. Similarly I'm having trouble with docx, xlsx and pptx files, since they're essentially all zip files containing a bunch of xml. I also tried a python script importing the magic module, but no go. I'm trying to identify the actual file for a sandbox analysis. And for this specific purpose I need to find the actual file type in order to run it in the sandbox vm (the Windows vm runs everything by extension). Let's say my sample file is labeled as try.exe, but in reality it's just a doc file. My script will rename it as try.exe.doc, which would work fine for doc files. But since linux identifies all MSOffice files as simple DOC files then there's no way to identify ppt or xls files. As a result the sandbox wont' analyze the sample correctly.

• Incompleted ubuntu 12.04 install dual-boot xp

  This weekend has been the 1st time i've tried to install ubuntu. On the initial install, (I am using a USB) the installation went all the way through and asked to restart when completed. I was not able to get grub to boot and kept going through windows. After some research I found some articles on updating/reinstalling grub, so I followed those. I finally got grub to load after a day but there was no windows option only the Ubuntu 12.04 which when I selected it only gave me a fatal error 17. I booted from the usb again and deleted the partitions and installed again. This time I got an error 15. I then booted through xp and downloaded the WUBI.exe and uninstalled ubuntu and reinstalled again. The installation went to the very end and then gave an error message (which I don't remember exactly what it said) something along the lines of checking my logs on my C drive. I then uninstalled ubuntu and removed the wubi.exe file and wiped my usb and did the download to the usb again. Booted through usb and ran the install process again. It again went through the install process but after creating username and password and hitting continue the installation dialogue box disappears and the mouse spinning wheel is displayed but I do not receive the prompt to restart. I can still access the side menu for ubuntu but the wheel keeps spinning. How to I get Ubuntu to install properly

• Installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1 or Windows Phone tools in your VM (danger!)

  If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you probably know that I tend to develop stuff in a Parallels VM on a Mac. It's how I roll. I like VM's because I can trash them and do really stupid things with beta software. That said, there is a pain point that doesn't seem that well documented when it comes to installing stuff in this scenario.The WP7 tools, and SP1 for Visual Studio 2010 (perhaps only if you already have the WP7 tools installed, I'm not sure), do something strange on install. As if it weren't already a long and slow installation, for reasons I don't understand, the installer fires up an instance of Windows Phone Emulator. As you may already know, the emulator doesn't run in a VM, because it is itself a VM, apparently. What it will do is fire up your CPU, make your comprooder hot and make the fans blow harder.I found this out accidentally, as I started the (slow) phone tool installation once, and walked away. An hour and a half later, I came back to find it hadn't finished. But it was hot and the CPU was pegged, so I fired up the task manager to find XDE.exe, the phone emulator, cranking away. I had to kill it several times, and eventually the install finished. It fired up just once in the SP1 install, but it still had the same hanging effect.I can't for the life of me figure out why it does this. In a VM, I can connect the phone to it and use that, so I don't need the emulator. But this install, firing up the emulator, will make it choke until you kill the XDE.exe process. Watch out!

  I just got started with AzureWebSites by creating a website by choosing the Wordpress template. Next I tried to install WebMatrix so that I could run the website locally. Every time I tried to run my website from WebMatrix I hit the message “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Step 00 – Analysis It took a bit of time to figure out that WebMatrix makes use of IISExpress. But it was easy to figure out that IISExpress was not showing up in the system tray when I started WebMatrix. This was a good indication that IISExpress is having some trouble starting up. So, I opened CMD prompt and tried to run IISExpress.exe this resulted in the below error message So, I ran IISExpress.exe /trace:Error this gave more detailed reason for failure Step 1 – Fixing “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Further analysis revealed that the IIS Express config file had been corrupted. So, I navigated to C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\IISExpress\config and deleted the files applicationhost.config, aspnet.config and redirection.config (please take a backup of these files before deleting them). Come back to CMD and run IISExpress /trace:Error IIS Express successfully started and parked itself in the system tray icon. I opened up WebMatrix and clicked Run, this time the default site successfully loaded up in the browser without any failures. Step 2 – Download WordPress Azure WebSite using WebMatrix Because the config files ‘applicationhost.config’, ‘aspnet.config’ and ‘redirection.config’ were deleted I lost the settings of my Azure based WordPress site that I had downloaded to run from WebMatrix. This was simple to sort out… Open up WebMatrix and go to the Remote tab, click on Download Export the PublishSettings file from Azure Management Portal and upload it on the pop up you get when you had clicked Download in the previous step Now you should have your Azure WordPress website all set up & running from WebMatrix. Now I wanted to change the account for the client to a production one but had problems changing the email address so decided to do a reinstall. Ran uninstall. Downloaded ubuntuone-3.0.2-windows-installer.exe. It downloads, goes through the unpacking/install – strangely some of the messages say updating as if it was replacing something that was already there. I do not get the setup/signin screen. There is no ubuntu% processes running. The Program files/ubuntuone directory exists with data and dist folders. The U icon is on the desktop – pointing at ubuntuone/dist/ubuntuone-control-panel-qt.exe but this does not run. Ran uninstall again, deleted Program files/ubuntuone directory, removed any ubuntu entries for registry, rebooted. Downloaded install again - exactly the same as above. How can I uninstall Ubuntu One to get a clean reinstall? Or force the install to continue after downloading/unpacking?

  At first I was downloading Ubuntu 12.10 using Windows Installer, but I cancelled it after just 2-3 minutes and dowloaded 32-Bit ISO (ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386). Then I created bootable USB Stick (new HP 210 v210 w) using Pendrivelinux (Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.1.4). I Formatted D Drive. (Both by Windows & EaseUS) I've set boot priority correctly. But after getting message "Boot Error", I ran wubi.exe directly from USB drive. Now the message is "A previous installation was detected in D:\ubuntu. Please uninstall that before continuing." I formatted D: again and performed disk check, surface test using EaseUS. It shows no error or bad sectors. Formatted & checked my pendrive too. Directly ran .iso. But same error keeps coming. I found way around above problems, by copying extracted .iso on D:\ and installing Ubuntu using wubi.exe and though on boot it was shown with Windows 7, selecting it caused following error Try hd(0,0): NTFS5 : No wubildr Try hd(0,1): NTFS5 : So, I uninstalled it and Reeinstalled it Now installation fails at around 7mins saying " An error occurred. No space left on device. For more info please see log file " My D: is a 9 GB partition. (99% Free) Ubuntu Site 12.10 says it needs around 4.5 GB. Now Trying it by extendin D: to 10 GB... A strongly named application or component cannot reference a weak-named component, so strong-naming an EXE prevents the EXE from referencing weak-named DLLs that are deployed with the application. For this reason, the Visual Studio project system does not strong-name application EXEs. Instead, it strong-names the Application manifest, which internally points to the weak-named application EXE. I expected VS to avoid this problem, but I had no luck there, it complained about all the unsigned references, so I created a separate "WCF Service Library" project inside my solution containing only code above and signed that one. At this point entire solution compiled just okay. And here's my problem: When I fired up "WCF Service Configuration Editor" I was able to add new behavior element extension (say "AuthExtension"), but then when I tried to add that extension to my end point behavior it gives me: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. • Clickonce downloading the deploy files via HTTP and not HTTPS

  I am working on a project to deploy a project via clickonce. The website where these files are housed will only accept HTTPS traffic and if you attempt to connect via HTTP, our siteminder agent will redirect you to a HTTPS login form. We cannot disable the siteminder agent or enable HTTP for security reasons. In the application file, I have a codebase that references an absolute path to the manifest and it is via HTTPS <dependency> <dependentAssembly dependencyType="install" codebase="https://psaportal.ilab.test.com/testprinting/Application_Files/testprint_1_0_0_1/testprint.exe.manifest" size="10147"> <assemblyIdentity name="testprint.exe" version="1.0.0.1" publicKeyToken="9a078649ee05e0e7" language="neutral" processorArchitecture="msil" type="win32" /> <hash> <dsig:Transforms> <dsig:Transform Algorithm="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:HashTransforms.Identity" /> </dsig:Transforms> <dsig:DigestMethod Algorithm="http://www.w3.org/2000/09/xmldsig#sha1" /> <dsig:DigestValue>2nch1T0SmlAycmePobtg9F1qF7c=</dsig:DigestValue> </hash> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> In running wireshark and decoding the SSL traffic (I am using the server’s private key in wireshark to decrypt the SSL traffic). I see the request to the application’s manifest file is via HTTPS (This is a good thing). But when the clickonce tries to download the testprint.exe.deploy and the other respective files, it is always via HTTP and the siteminder jumps in and redirects the requests which kills the clickonce install with errors. I have tried to specific an absolute codebase reference in the manifest file, but then I start getting entrypoint errors when the manifest is downloaded by the Clickonce installer. Does anyone know how to get all of the deploy files to always download via HTTPS?

• C# Windows Service XML

  Scenario I have a windows service written in C# that performs some processing based on parsing an XML file and use that data to carry out various tasks. The service also does various bits of logging - which uses settings from an APP.Config file. The Problem When the service is compiled, installed and run, the XML file seems to disappear. I'm getting the impression that it is just ignored or something like that. So far I've tried using TWO App.Config files, one named App.Config that contains settings for the service, and the other called MyService.exe.config that contains all of the data that was used in the XML file (the idea being that I can parse the XML from a config file that actually gets compiled and appears in my installation directory. However When I do this, all that happens is that ONE config file appears (with the name MyService.exe.config), but it contains the contents of the App.Config file and not the XML data that I want to parse. What I need All I want is to have a config file for my settings, and an XML file for my data. Question Is this possible? I know the application works as it was originally built as a console application that ran fine. Other The application has to be designed this way (as in, I need my data stored as XML, and my settings stored in a config file). Thoughts If I could somehow combine the contents of the two files into ONE config file, that would be one way of solving the problem. However, I have tried this and of course I get a "Type Initialisation Exception", as the config file cannot interprate the XML data (probably because the tags are custom and do not form any part of the config schema - or something like that). Ideas Please could someone explain to me if it is possible for me to have an XML file AND a config file that will actually be compiled and stored in my installation directory for the service when it is run?   Hi, I'm writing an app to check for the bus timetable's. Therefor I need to post some data to a html page, submit it, and parse the resulting page with htmlparser. • Maintaining packages with code - Adding a property expression programmatically

  Every now and then I've come across scenarios where I need to update a lot of packages all in the same way. The usual scenario revolves around a group of packages all having been built off the same package template, and something needs to updated to keep up with new requirements, a new logging standard for example.You'd probably start by updating your template package, but then you need to address all your existing packages. Often this can run into the hundreds of packages and clearly that's not a job anyone wants to do by hand. I normally solve the problem by writing a simple console application that looks for files and patches any package it finds, and it is an example of this I'd thought I'd tidy up a bit and publish here. This sample will look at the package and find any top level Execute SQL Tasks, and change the SQL Statement property to use an expression. It is very simplistic working on top level tasks only, so nothing inside a Sequence Container or Loop will be checked but obviously the code could be extended for this if required. If you get an error Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DtsRuntimeException: The package failed to load due to error 0xC0011008… then check that the package is from the correct version of SSIS compared to the referenced assemblies, 2005 vs 2008 in other words.
