• Why does Ubuntu 10.10 show blank screen during startup?

  When I try to login to Ubuntu 10.10 I get a flickering screen for a second showing - Ubuntu 10.10 ............. and then I get a blank purple coloured screen[Ubuntu's theme colour] which doesn't progress any further Can anybody suggest a remedy to this problem? From whatever questions I searched in various Ubuntu Forums it seems like this problem is likely caused by a missing NVIDIA Display Driver[which is being used in my Sony Vaio Laptop] update in Ubuntu releases If that's the case then how can I update my NVIDIA Display Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 without being able to log into the Ubuntu 10.10?

  Do you use a standard form to gather requirements from a customer prior to making a website? If so what are the questions you ask? For example Purpose of Website: (sell products, reduce number of enquires, reduce work load, etc) Do you have you’re an existing logo? (can you send it via email) Do you have a preferred font for the website text? Do you have a colour theme for your logo, business cards, shop you would like to keep on the website Do you have photos you can provide of your Products? etc Ofcause it would need to be tweaked slightly for each customer but I was looking for a generic document as a baseline.

For example: I will do a partition of, E:30gb then i will target E: in wubi so that it will be Ubuntu then use the .iso file to install it on E: My Computer: Acer Aspire 5750-6683 i5-2450m processor Is it fine to do a dual boot? Can I run Windows 7 Home Premium OS, with the custom theme and boot screen, can that effect dual booting?   I read about how to enable and disable services in Ubuntu and it seems that there are different possibilities manage theme? The first method i found is update-rc.d to add new services to startup, which aims on the /etc/init.d folder and it's contents. The other one i found is the way to edit .conf the files in /etc/init folder. What's the recommended way to enable / disable / add services and why? Could you please give a short bulletproof step by step example how to add a service xyz in Ubuntu and enable and disable it?

• Should I be concerned about hAtom tags on my blog?

  I am using a theme that automatically adds hatom-entry, hatom-feed classes on my WordPress blog. I read that such tags/classes should be used for syndicated content. Anyway, then I ran a Rich Snippet Tool, which threw a "HAtomfeed" error. So I removed a "hfeed" div tag. Now, should I be concerned? Can this cause any problems? I still have a couple of these classes (listed below), and I just hope they do not effect my site's ranking.   The next tutorial that has been thoroughly restructured and rewritten is: NetBeans Platform Feed Reader Tutorial Originally written by Rich Unger, it was one of the very first NetBeans Platform tutorials that ever existed. In this particular rewrite, the entire structure of the tutorial has changed, in an attempt to make the flow more "bite size", rather than a big lump. Also, thanks to recent NetBeans Platform changes, there are no Bundle files anymore, all Strings are declared via @Messages annotations. Theoretically, the browser in the application could be a JavaFX WebView, though the browser part of the application isn't a central theme of the tutorial, hence only a reference is made to the JavaFX alternative. • How to get decent WiFi despite a virtual Faraday cage

  One of my clients is the local branch of an international airline. They have a small office in the secured area behind the ticket counters, and timeshare space at the ticket counter. I need to add a ticket printer out front, which I cannot (for contract/liability reasons) attach to the shared computer at the counter; the only workable solution seems to be to put the printer and its attached computer on a cart and connect to the office's network via WiFi. So far, no problem - right? Well, the terminal has been getting a facelift, which - among other things - includes decorative stainless-steel panels along the wall behind the ticket counters. This paneling acts as a seriously effective barrier to WiFi! The office's WiFi router - a brand-new D-Link DIR-815, dual-band 802.11n - is just on the other side of the pictured wall, and twenty feet or so to the right. And yet the only way I can connect AT ALL on this side of the wall is to stick the USB adapter (on the end of an extension cable) right into the crack between panels... and even then I can only see the 5GHz network, and that very weakly. Has anyone else had experience with this sort of misguided interior decoration? Any ideas on how I can improve reception on the other side of the barrier? (Needless to say, physical modifications of the environment - tempting though they might be - are strictly no-go.)

• What laptop would be recommended for video-editing or transcoding to blu-ray?

  I'm looking for a machine (has to be a laptop) reasonably fast enough to handle editing/transcoding/rendering to Blu-ray disc of full true HD 1080p (1920x1080) video from a Samsung R10 camcorder - MPEG4 25fps (not the Sony-Panasonic AVCHD format): To be able to browse through the footage (say, quarter screen is fine for monitoring) and do simple edits - cut out bad bits, add titles, fades, nothing too fancy To be able to burn the footage in 1920x1080p 24p (twenty-four) fps to blu-ray, probably don't mind if I have to leave it for a few hours, or even overnight, as long as its not still running in the morning or takes days. I ALREADY have an external USB 2.0 LG BE06LU10 blu-ray burner. Does quad core make much difference? Or would Dual-core suffice for the above? NVidia because of CUDA for increased speed. What software today can take advantage of this? Which graphics card do I need? So far I've found Dell/Alienware to be well-specified, having a 5yr old Dell laptop that still runs well, albeit slow by today's standards, gives me a good impression. My concerns are too much fan-noise and budget and some Dell Precision Laptops exceed 1500 pounds. Thoughts?

• Disable CTRL+mouse wheel zooming in Chrome?

  I'm a normal-sighted person and I would like to view pages at 100% all the time. I use keyboard shortcuts that involve CTRL a lot, so about twenty times a day I accidentally hit CTRL at the same time that I'm scrolling, which results in the page being reflowed and repainted. This in is annoying because it can take up to 30 seconds to fix the issue, depending on how complex the site layout is. On sites with dynamic layout such as Google Docs the problem is more serious; accidentally hitting CTRL+mouse wheel corrupts the display and forces me to refresh the page entirely, sometimes causing me to loose information in the process. I would like to either decouple CTRL+mouse wheel from zoom, or disable zoom functionality altogether. This is possible on Firefox by using about:config; is there a similar way to edit detailed settings in Chrome? Would I have access to the detailed settings if I used Chromium instead of Chrome? I'll probably jump ship back to Firefox if I can't solve this problem. There is a superuser question that asks basically the same thing I'm asking, but for Firefox and Internet Explorer exclusively. Other people on the Chrome forum have had related issues, but none have the same problem. "I would really like it if I could deactivate the auto zoom in/out." had "something with laptops and Windows 7", not the feature built into Chrome. Other people have had PDF specific issues, which doesn't concern me. I've also tried searching for extensions that allow you to disable the scroll; I had hoped that "Zoom Lock" would have the ability to lock the zoom at 100% and prevent CTRL+scroll wheel from distorting the display, but it doesn't work for my use case. • Getting prompted for password accessing page through script even when client and server are in same

  I'm trying to pull up an internal webpage in automated fashion using the methods in 'Internetexplorer.Application' using vbscript. But I'm getting prompted for password, although the client and the server both are in the same domain. Predictably when I manually try to access the web page, I don't have any problem. Only when I try using cscript.exe or iexplore.exe, I get prompted. I'm trying to automate some of the smoke test we do after a new build is deployed. But this password prompt is getting in the way. Following are the system specs Client machine - IE 7.0, OS is Windows server 2003 Server machine - Windows Server 2008 Both are in the same domain. So far I've unsuccessfully tried following to automate the password input system.diagnostics.process.start var WinHttpReq = new ActiveXObject("WinHttp.WinHttpRequest.5.1"); WinHttpReq.Open("GET", "http://website", false); WinHttpReq.SetCredentials("username", "password", 0); Nothing seems to work I checked in IIS. we have only anonymous and forms authentication enabled Is there any configuration setting in the client machine that can be tweaked to bypass this, although I'd hate to do it since you step on the toes of twenty people trying to do that. Preferable way would be to programmatically input it if its possible. Also, if you can suggest a more appropriate forum, that'd be great too. Please help.

• How can I keep SSH's know_hosts up to date (semi-securely)?

  Just to get this out in front so I am not told not to do this: The machines in question are all on a local network with little to no internet access (they aren't even well connected to the corporate network) Everyone who has the ability to setup a man-in-the-middle attack already has root on the machine The machines are reinstalled as part of QA procedures, so having new host keys is important (we need to see how the other machines react); I am only trying to make my machine nicer to use. I do a lot of reinstalls on machines which changes their host keys. This necessitates going into ~/.ssh/known_hosts on my machine and blowing away to old key and adding the new key. This is a massive pain in the tuckus, so I have started considering ways to automate this. I don't want to just blindly accept any host key, so patching OpenSSH to ignore host keys is out. I have considered creating a wrapper around the ssh command the will detect the error coming back from ssh and present me with a prompt to delete the old key or quit. I have also considered creating a daemon that would fetch the latest host key from a machine on a whitelist (there are about twenty machines that are being constantly reinstalled) and replace the old host key in known_hosts. How would you automate this process?

• How do you gracefully upgrade mission critical systems to wildly disparate systems?

  In the span of the 12+ years of my career, I have yet to overcome this hurdle and I suspect the answer simply isn't easy or even possible, so I ask everyone here for their experience. Say that you're running into egregious problems that can only be fixed by moving from one platform to another - either from making a mistake in choosing the platform that was chosen years ago, or simply growing beyond what the system was originally designed for. You know for certain that the cruft that has built up over time will invariably mean that it will be nearly impossible to test for all the things that will certainly lead to tech support hell - which we all know leads to the loss of customers. Not that customers aren't already complaining about the egregious problems that already exist! The best possible way that I've discovered so far is to maybe devise a plan for the changeover, test it on a few clients, test it on a dozen clients, test it on a hundred clients, then finally finish the changeover for everyone and pray that you've worked out all the bugs with those first hundred and twenty, and that the animal by-products will not hit the ventilation system in the most spectacular fashion possible. However, that doesn't mean that it won't anyway. So say that you're moving from Exchange to Exim (or even just Sendmail to Exim). How do you handle it?

• RSS "Newspaper" / Google Reader replacement

  With the impending demise of Google Reader I've been looking at ways to replace it. I've decided that what might be cool is to get an email every morning, with all the updates from the last twenty-four hours, maybe in the style of a newspaper. That's not a very original idea, since sites like http://fivefilters.org/pdf-newspaper/ and http://feedjournal.com/ already do this, but they both have various drawbacks. In particular both require a single feed, will just take the last n items, and clicking around on their website. The Pro option for feedjournal seems almost like it would do the job, but the project seems to be dead, and there's no way to buy it. Before I hack together something crazy I'd like to know if there's a better solution to my problem. In short: I want to replace Google Reader with a daily pdf email, how should I do this? edit: I didn't award the bounty because nobody solved the problem (not that I'm assuming it has a solution). Answers like "well for the way I do things this wouldn't work" aren't actually helpful, even if they are well-meaning.

• Detailed android activity lifecycle (onAttachedToWindow())

  I'm interested in android activity lifecycle and I would like to get more detailed description/documentation/reference than widely available basic (onCreate-onStart-onResume) one. My need comes from realizing that starting new activity (Theme.Dialog styled) from onAttachedToWindow() greatly improves response time if comparing to starting it from onCreate(). I wonder how this onAttachedToWindow() fits into whole android activity lifecycle. Official API ref description "Called when the window has been attached to the window manager" doesn't help a lot.

• How do I change the URL for the wordpress author archive page?

  Instead of www.example.com/author/xyz, I want to use www.example.com/artist/xyz. I was hoping it was as easy as copying author.php to artist.php in my theme directory, but no such luck. Where does wordpress handle the special processing for the author archive pages? .htaccess rewriting is another option, but I wasn't able to get anything to work with the existing wordpress rewrite rules. • WP Oembed not passing through the “autoplay=1” variable

  Hi guys, I'm having a problem here.. I am passing this through a custom field: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6P1Q-UycHA&autoplay=1 (notice the "autoplay=1") But when I load the video on my theme using wp_oembed_get... it displays the video fine, but it does not listen to the "autoplay=1" variable I am passing through.
