• Windows server administration over web browser

  I wonder if there is a software which can control Windows server over a browser. I know it sounds is strange however I haven't seen any and as you can do scripting with *nix system I think it could be a good one. Functions that I am after: User management Printer install msi assign I know there are many programmes including a win server but I would like to do it only one surface. Has anyone come a cross such a thing like this?

  I'm wondering where to find detailed information regarding the Microsoft Advanced Windows Firewall command line settings. For instance, from reading a couple technet articles I've learned that I can run the following: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”File and Printer Sharing” new enable=Yes The bit about 'group="File and Printer Sharing"' is the part I'm having trouble finding documentation for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And, if possible, I'd rather a pointer to the docs than a simple listing of group names.

• Cannot access windows share folder

  In my windows domain, there's been happening a problem with the access to some of our shared folders: There appears a "the account is disabled" problem whe trying to access those. When looking at the the Active Directory Groups and Users snap-in, there's no user blocked nor disabled and the users trying to access the shared folders don't have any problem logging in on their respective computers. Needless to say, they have proper permissions on the network shares to be accessed. What might be the problem?

• Missing IUSR account on Windows Server 2008 R2 / IIS7.5

  Ok, I'm stumped. I've been given the job of installing PHP5.4 on this machine. One of the manual installation steps is to configure the IUSR account to have specific permissions. The problem is, I see the IIS_IUSRS group, but no IUSR account. The only users listed are the Admin user, a Guest account, and a user for the security software. I'm not really the Windows server type, more of a *NIX guy - so this is getting a little frustrating. I've searched everywhere and haven't found a suitable answer, but I have learned a lot about IIS7.5 - so it hasn't been a total waste of time. I've tried several recommendations and found several similar problems, but nothing has worked so far. I've also just tried making the IUSR account myself, but to no avail. If anyone knows how to get this going, I will be ever so grateful.

• How can I use the SSRS ReportViewer from VS 2008 in a VS2010 project?

  Hi, I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC 2 / .NET 3.5 project which includes SSRS 2008 reports. After migrating to VS 2010 RC, the new web forms report viewer has been giving so much trouble that I'd like to use the old report viewer from VS 2008 again. Now I'm just wondering what would be the easiest way to do that. The report viewer is embedded in a Webforms ASPX file which is loaded in an IFrame by the the MVC view. Report parameters are currently stored as session variables, and for security reasons I would prefer not to change that for HTTP POST or GET parameters. So I can't just put the report viewer in a separate application and build that with VS2008. Moving the entire project back to VS 2008 is not an option. So, what's the easiest way for me to use the VS 2008 ReportViewer in VS 2010? Is there way to grab an assembly from VS 2008 and use that in my project? Thanks, Adrian

  Hi all Our ASp.net applications getting error as below" [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied " But i can connect with Enterprise manager management studio and Query analaizer with out any issue. It was running these applications with out any issue long time. last one week we are getting this error.If we restart the server .it works then it will come again after 3to 4 hours. • Visual Studio 2008 macro only works from the Macro IDE, not the Macro Explorer

  Edit: Creating a new module in the same VSMacros project fixed the problem. The following macro only works if I open the Macro IDE from Visual Studio and run the macro from there. It'd be much more useful if I could just right click the macro from the Macro Explorer from my Visual Studio instance. I must be doing something obviously wrong, but I've never worked with VS macros before. The MessageBox does not appear in either case.   The version information, displayed when the mouse cursor hovers over the file in windows explorer, is set for a file built by visual studio in the VERSION resource. I would like to set the version in one place for all the files built by a solution, preferably when I change the version in the install properties. Is there a way to do this? The motivation for this is that if the version is not updated for a file, then the installer will leave previous versions of files instead of replacing them with new files. This happens even when the 'RemovePreviousVersions' property is set. In order to save the tedious and error prone task of updating the version in every file built and installed, I remove the version resource from all files - which is not elegant.

• VS 2008 unstable after "Stop Debugging"

  This was on Windows Server 2003 X86, VSTS 9.0.30729.1 SP I used "Attach to process" to debug the program, but recently when I "Stop Debugging" by "shift + f5", I was prompted with an error saying "VS has an internal error and will be unstable". After that all the debug related menu items were disabled e.g. "Start debugging" and "attach to process" etc., even when I forcibly closed the program the situation remained, leaving me the only option to restart the solution. The only reason I can think of causing this is that I forcibly kill the process a lot, in order to able to rebuild it quickly, other than that I didn't do anything abnormal to VS. another sympton: when I tried to close the VS normally, I was prompted with "source file [] does not belong to the project being debugged" for all the files I opened inside of IDE, but the file does belong to the project. • Visual Studio 2008 awful performance

  Hi, I have ported a piece of C++ code, that works out of core, from Linux(Ubuntu) to Windows(Vista) and I realized that it works about 50times slower on VS2008! I removed all the out of core parts and now I just have a piece of code that has nothing to do with the hard disk. I set compiler parameters to O2 in Project Properties but still get about 10times slower than g++ in linux! Does anybody have an idea why it is this much slower under VS? I really appreciate any kind of hint! Thanks,

  I have a program that doesn't seem to recognize declared types in the latest U3D software. There's a line typedef BOOL (WINAPI* GMI)(HMON, LPMONITORINFOEX); which gets the error: Error 1 error C2061: syntax error : identifier 'LPMONITORINFOEX' c:\Projects\U3D\Source\RTL\Platform\Common\Win32\IFXOSRender.cpp 28 and a line MONITORINFOEX miMon; which gets Error 5 error C2065: 'miMon' : undeclared identifier c:\Projects\U3D\Source\RTL\Platform\Common\Win32\IFXOSRender.cpp 49 Error 3 error C2065: 'MONITORINFOEX' : undeclared identifier c:\Projects\U3D\Source\RTL\Platform\Common\Win32\IFXOSRender.cpp 49 The program's first non-comment statement is #include <windows.h>, which includes winuser.h, which defines these identifiers. In Visual Studio, I can right-click on them and go to the definition (a typedef) and from the typedef to the struct. WINAPI is defined in WinDef.h, so that seems to be working. There are no redefinitions of LPMONITORINFOEX or MONITORINFOEX in any other file. So, how can this be happening, and what can I do about it?

• Can't Remote into Windows Server

  Hello, I have a Dell server wired into the router. I was able to connect to it with my laptop (laptop is wireless) before my router died. My verizon router went kaput, and I got everything else back up and running on the wireless network other than the remoting in feature, even though I can access the server through windows explorer just fine. Any ideas why? What do I need to check? UPDATE: Interesting scenario, Network Discovery is off; I turn it on and save, but for some reason, even after that, network discovery is turning itself off... no idea why that is happening? Thanks.

• Is Windows XP Pro not a good Hyper-V guest citizen?

  On my Windows Server 2008 R2 w. the Hyper-V role, I have these guest VMs: 3 x Windows Server 2008 R2 2 x Windows Server 2003 x86 2 x Windows 7 x64 1 x Windows XP Pro x86 In general, all machines are very fast and responsive. However, the Windows XP Pro guest is very sluggish. It can take up to 2 minutes to connect to the console/or a RD session. Sometimes it can "go into sleep" for several minutes. I have tried to add a 2nd CPU and more memory, but it doesn't help. When the issue happens, it's more or less impossible to get a responsive Task Manager up to analyze which process is hogging the CPU. But I have noticed that it can be various processes; lsass.exe, crss.exe etc. Integration Services is installed. Microsoft Security Essentials is installed, but I have tried without it, no difference. Any ideas?

• Windows 7 Slowness following Virtual PC and Visual Studio Install

  I'm running Windows 7 32bit on a 3.2ghz Pentium D with 2gb RAM and a 1TB SATA hard drive. My system was running as fast as it ever has until I installed Visual Studio and Virtual PC a few days ago. Ever since - regardless of whether either application has been running the system has been running incredibly slowly. For example flash video plays jumpily, 3D games that used to run fine are now unplayable and even the smallest amount of multitasking makes the system unusable. I'm confident there is no virus or other such things present following scans in safemode and I'm fairly confident I've made no other changes to my system. Any ideas - I've run out of things to try!

• Windows 2012 Server: Enable .NET 3.5

  I have a Windows 2012 Server which needs .NET 3.5 installed. Here is what I am trying: Using a Windows 2012 ISO file, 'mount' on the 2012 Server as 'D' drive and then tried both GUI and Command prompt. In case of GUI, I specified the 'alternate source' path to the D drive's 'source/sxs folder but that failed without giving enough info. In case of the command prompt, here is what's happening: dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /source:d:\sources\sxs I get error: Installed but Parent feature not enabled. So I tried another approached: dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /all /source:d:\sources\sxs the above command, per http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2012/05/14/windows-8-and-net-framework-3-5.aspx is supposed to enable parent elements; but running this I get error like 'source not found'. Is there some error in my second command? What else I could do? This is Windows 2012 Server Standard edition. Thanks!

• Run application or script on Windows RDC connection

  I checked this thread, but it did not solve my exact problem. I need to run a script on when a connection is made across my network using windows remote desktop connection. The thread listed above works for the initial login, however, if I don't log out (which is necessary for some processes running on my network), then it wont run the script again the next time someone connects to the system using remote desktop connection. Previously we were using pcAnywhere to achieve this, however after running into some graphical issues with pcAnywhere, we have decided to move away from it to RDC. For a little more information, we need to have an email sent out anytime a connection is made to particular machines. The login name will always be the same for those systems and we do not log off when closing the connection.

• How to select a server that supports Windows scheduled file IO

  Background: I am developing an application that needs to read data from disk with a fairly consistent throughput. It is important that this throughput is not influenced by other actions that happen on the disk (e.g. by other processes). For this purpose, I was hoping to use the 'Scheduled File I/O' feature in Windows (throught the GetFileBandwithReservation and SetFileBandwithReservation functions). However, this StackOverflow question has thought me that this feature is only available if the device driver supports it. Currently I have no computer at my disposition that seems to support this feature (I have an HP Proliant server and a Dell Precision workstation). Question: If I were to order a new server, how can I know beforehand if this feature will be supported by the device driver? How 'upscale' does the server have to be? Has anybody used this feature with success and cares to share his experiences?

• Win2008 DC in a Windows 2000 domain: can I keep the old DC?

  Will be putting a new Windows 2008 SE Server into a single domain network with two domain controllers, both running Windows 2000 Server. The functional level of the domain is mixed mode/2000. Until a second 2008 DC can be purchased, I'd like to leave the current Win2k operational master DC as a backup DC as the other member servers running 2003 have either accounting/SQL or Exchange on them. Eventually all the w2k servers will be decommissioned, but until then, I need another DC for redundancy. Following the standard process for adding a new DC, can I leave the old operational master DC (or the other backup DC) running after I transfer the FSMO roles to the new server? Will this cause any issues?

• Windows Firewall allows connection from any IP regardless of rule that only allow a specific IP

  I have configured the Windows Firewall to Block (default) incoming connection on the public profile. I have created a rule for a port (in this case, this is Sql Server) that explicitly states that only my office static IP is allowed. If I test from my office, I am able to connect to the port. I was expecting that anybody outside the office would not be able to connect, but this is not the case. I asked a friend to telnet the port to see if it would reply and it does even if he's not on my network. I am a bit confuse here. Shouldn't it block everybody but the given IP? Is my server completely unsecured?

• MySQL Windows vs. Linux: performance, caveats, pros and cons?

  Looking for (preferrably) some hard data or at least some experienced anecdotal responses with regards to hosting a MySQL database (roughly 5k transactions a day, 60-70% more reads than writes, < 100k of data per transaction i.e. no large binary objects like images, etc.) on Windows 2003/2008 vs. a Debian-based derivative (Ubuntu/Debian, etc.). This server will function only as a database server with a separate Web server on another physical box; this server will require remote access for management (SSH for Linux, RDP for Windows). I suspect that the Linux kernel/OS will compete less than the Windows Server for resources, but for this I can't be certain. There's also security footprint: even with Windows 2008, I'm thinking that the Linux box can be locked down more easily than the Windows Server. Anyone have any experience with both configurations?

• Performance problems on RDC to our Terminal-Server Win2008 R2

  Hello, we have a new win2008-R2 (2x Xeon X5570, 32GB RAM). There I have installed the terminal-server roles, thats all OK. Currently 5 users are working at this server, but all get a very low performance in their remote-desktop session. Sometime it takes 1-2 seconds till the keyboard-inputs will be performed and shown. At the clients I run RDP v 6.1 We have also an older TS-server (based on Win2003 with an Opteron-CPU), there are working about 20 users at the same time. There I do not have the troubles with the inputs at the remote-desktop sessions. Both servers are connected to the same gigabit-switch. Any ideas what could cause the troubles at the Win2008 R2? • Is it possible to upgrade using the Windows Server 2012 evaluation?

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 Standard installation here that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Server, using the evaluation version. (The scenario is essentially that I need to test the upgrade, and specifically the upgrade process, before we spend the money on going ahead with the actual upgrade.) When I try to upgrade, it fails with the message: "Windows Server 2008 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new... (etc., etc.)" Is this (non-upgradability) a known limitation of the evaluation version? (Unfortunately, I haven't found a clear answer on this point.) And if not, any thoughts on where else I might look for the problem and solutions to it?
