  • Microsoft Discontinuing Windows Home Server

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
As part of their ongoing push to simplify their product lineups, Microsoft is discontinuing their popular small office/home server platform Windows Home Server. On to see the new alternative for small volume users. Although, in the context of the simplification push, it shouldn’t seem surprising, many people were in fact surprised by Microsoft’s move to drop the extremely popular and economical WHS platform. Now, instead of dropping $99 on a copy of WHS to build their simple home servers users will find themselves on the first tier of the new Windows Server 2012 pricing ladder: a copy of Essentials for $425. There is one version below Essentials, Foundation, but it’s currently OEM only. Hit up the link below to see the new features and pricing structure of Windows Server 2012. • Windows doesn't boot after Ubuntu installation

    - by Diogo Garcia
I have had serious problems installing Ubuntu and Windows and have dual boot. Recently I installed both operating systems, Ubuntu was the last one, and after that my computer was booting directly to Windows 7. I used my Ubuntu USB live to repair the grub, and could repair. Now I initiate my pc with grub 1.99 and Ubuntu and Windows are recognized, but Windows gives an error and don't initiate, suggesting to use Windows DVD to repair the grub. I tried that but with no effects on be behavior. I have a new asus n56vm. This conflicts with gpt and mbr have been a huge pain to me. I don't know what to to, I installed Ubuntu and Windows numerous times since I bought this computer 2 weeks ago.

  • What You Said: Your Favorite Windows Customization Tricks

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite Windows customization tricks and now we’re back to highlight some of the tips, tricks, and tweaks you shared. Your customization tips ranged from cosmetic to behind the scenes tweaks and offered a wide variety of ways to customize the Windows experience. Ted Lilley’s favorite must-have tweak involves Windows Explorer: The most fundamental change I make to Windows 7 is to immediately add tabs to Explorer via the QTTabbar add-on. I also add the good old cut/copy/paste/delete/new folder buttons alongside the tabs by installing Classic Shell (I skip Classic Start). • What are some good services for brainstorming domain name ideas? [closed]

    - by Clay Nichols
Possible Duplicate: Is there a domain search tool on the web that works well? I've run across a few of these but can't remember them right now (and I've probably missed a few good ones). The idea is that you provide some input (a word(s)) and it comes up with synonyms, rhyming words, etc. Ideally, I'd want to have some confidence that they aren't just registering all the domains I come up with.

  • Executing Windows administrative shell commands on Windows using Python

    - by at0m
I have a batch script using Windows shell commands to perform several administrative actions. The script is running great on Windows 7 but when i try launching it from Python 2.6 nothing happens: import os a = os.popen("somebatchfile.bat") I assume that this is because the bat file uses several commands that require an administrative privileges but i don't want to prompt to a password using runas.exe or embedding the password within the code. Is there any way to make UAC prompt for user approval or something?

  • Free OS with MS Windows Archetecture and capabilities

    - by Nayana Adassuriya
Currently most of the PC users mostly depend on the windows OS and they would not go away from that beaus of the hand on usage knowledge about and also because of the look and feel habituation. But there are plenty of Linux base Desktop operation systems there such as UBUNTU, FEDORA. Users do not tend to go for those OSs (specially office environments) because most of the 3rd party software and tools (such as Photoshop, flash, Visual Studio) mostly can install only in windows operating system. So I'm thinking why we cant create a free OS same as Windows. That is capable to install software that created for windows. that can communicate with windows servers and exchange etc.. . Simply it should be a free OS with all the capabilities of Windows OS. How about your idea?

  • Is ICANN planning any changes to domain registration soon?

    - by waiwai933
The BBC is reporting that domain registration will be changing next year. The .co landgrab could be one of the last before ICANN overhauls the way net addresses are assigned. Next year the body is due to open up the system so that companies and individuals can register any name they want. I haven't heard anything about a change—is the BBC correct, and if so, what are the details?

  • HTG Explains: How Windows Uses The Task Scheduler for System Tasks

    - by Chris Hoffman
While you can use the Windows Task Scheduler to schedule your own automatic tasks, Windows also uses it behind the scenes to perform many system tasks – defragmenting your hard disks when you’re not using your computer, for example. You can even modify these system tasks to tweak Windows to your liking – for example, you can change how often Windows creates system restore points. Third-party programs also often use the Task Scheduler for their own tasks. HTG Explains: Why Do Hard Drives Show the Wrong Capacity in Windows? • Having good domain name and using domain aliases ( I use notlong.com)?

    - by Michal P.
I use only free servers and after creating my website: http://pundaquit.republika.pl I decided to make access to that domain by simple domain name . I decided to use domain alias http://notlong.com/ service and have simple domain name http://pundaquit.notlong.com The second advantage of using alias here was to be independant from my file host which I will have to change. I haven't found a better alias service like notlong, because notlong.com is easy to remember. After that I encounter many problems: * most of forums or social services treat notlong adress as a spam, * Bing so far hvn't accepted http://pundaquit.notlong.com domain and others. Is it another way to have good free domain name? How about the situation when your hosting server will inform you to expire? Only a lasting layer of domain aliases make you independant from the real file hosts.

  • The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

    - by Mervin
So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do

  • 301 redirects mirrored domain

    - by Dave
I'm redesigning a site for a friend on my localhost. His old site is an .asp based site and we're replacing it with a WordPress site on LAMP hosting. The old site sits on domain A and also has another domain, domain B parked on top of it mirroring it. Google has picked up domain B for most of his search engine results and yahoo and bing etc have picked up domain A. The plan is to 301 redirect the the old pages of his site on domain A to the new WordPress versions and park domain B on top of it like before. My question is, will this work, if not what would be a better way to approach it? We'd prefer not to lose any of the search engine listings in the redesign, and the search engines don't appear to have penalized him for duplicate content. Thanks very much in advance!

  • Beginner: How to Make Explorer Always Show the Full Path in Windows 8

    - by Taylor Gibb
In older versions of Windows the Title Bar used to display your current location in the file system. In Windows 8 this is not the default behavior, however, you can enable it if you wish to. Display the Full Path in the Windows Explorer Title Bar Press the Windows + E keyboard combination to open Windows Explorer and then switch over to the View tab. On the right-hand side click on options and then select Change folder and search options from the drop-down. When the Folder Options dialog opens, switch over to the View options. Here you will need to tick the Display the full path in the title bar check box. That’s all there is to it. • Windows Repairs Itself After Ubuntu Boot

    - by pjtatlow
I have a custom built computer in my home which was running Windows 7 primarily. After I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and upgraded to 12.10, Windows 7 has to perform startup repair after every Ubuntu boot up. For example, I am using Ubuntu for my everyday work, but when I switch to Windows to play one of my steam games, windows fails to boot, and it switches to the recovery partition to "repair windows" then boots windows. The whole process takes about 20 minutes, which is quite annoying. Anyone know why this is happening or what I can do? Thanks in advance!

  • Windows 7/ 12.04 Dual Boot Mess

    - by Ben
I am certainly new to ubuntu (linux in general)... I added ubuntu 12.04 as a dual boot to a brand new desktop which had win 7 pre-installed. Both work well Then I tried to change the order of the boot menu to make Ubuntu first and Win7 second... I did this from the windows side (it seems that my setup is relying on windows bootloader, which I don't think I need to change) using the built-in startup manager (I think that's what windows calls it- it's in the control panel). I set Ubuntu as first (default if no user input). then... I ACCIDENTALLY ("hmmm...I wonder what this button does?") set the menu timeout to "0" Now, I cannot change the menu timeout (because I cannot get into windows) and without doing so, I cannot select windows as the OS I would like to boot(I cannot get into windows). Any Ideas?

  • How to shrink Windows partition with unmovable files in dual boot installation

    - by Tim
To install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, I have to shrink Windows 7 partition C:. But due to some unmovable files, I cannot shrink as much as I plan by using Windows own shrinking tool. I guess many of you who have both OSes on the same hard drive must have similar experience. How to solve this problem? Any reference that can help is also appreciated! Thanks and regards! UPDATE: I have identified what unmovable file currently stop further shrinking: \ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects\SystemIndex\Indexer\CiFiles\00010015.wid::$DATA If I understand correctly, the file belongs to Windows Search. Can I set up somewhere in Windows system settings to temperately eliminate the file and similar ones (because there are many similar files under the same directory which I guess will also stand in the way of shrinking and unmovable by defrag)?
