• Keyboard Layouts Plugin forgets settings, unable find workaround

  I use Xubuntu. As everyone knows, Keyboard Layouts Plugin is very, very buggy and it still forgets my settings. It drives me crazy - I have to set them again and again every time I wake up or turn on my laptop. So I found a solution - put into my .bashrc this: setxkbmap -option '' -option grp:alt_shift_toggle cz,us -variant querty That should set my toggle to Alt+shift and my layouts to Czech QUERTY and plain US English as a second one. Voilà, that seems to work! I could use Keyboard Layouts Plugin only as an indicator, that's okay. However, it doesn't work well. The problem is that it ignores -variant setting. More or less. In Keyboard Layouts Plugin I actually see Czech QUERTY selected, but in reality my keyboard types QUERTZ. That's insane :-( Could anyone help, please?

• Bad anti-aliasing in some applications

  There was an update a few weeks ago that seemed to mess with anti-aliasing in some applications. Firefox, Thunderbird, and the text in some apps such as Mousepad and Leafpad (but not the rest of the window) are affected, whereas Chrome and everything else seems to be just fine. Attached are two screenshots showing the difference between rendering in Firefox and Chrome. The anti-aliasing settings are the same as they've always been, which have worked just fine - full hinting, RGB sub-pixel order. I'm really not sure what's going on and am thinking that it might be faster to fix this problem by re-installing, but is there anything I can try first as re-installing is the last thing I want to do? I'm running Xubuntu 12.04.

• access denied when trying to open terminal on desktop

  ok so heres the skinny. I just moved some file using the sudo su command so i can move them to bin folder in file system then after closing terminal tried to reopen from desktop and got permission denied. I then rebooted and now i cant access my account and when trying to login it starts to boot then back to login screen. I then boot up in xterm and i get this message bash: /home/chris/.bashrc:Permission denied. I'm currently running xubuntu 10.04 and would like to get back in to that user. Can someone please help me. Not a noob but close to it. Thanks to anyone who helps and the quicker the better.

• Pulseaudio not detecting bluetooth headset automatically

  The Pavucontrol on my Xubuntu 13.10 detects my bluetooth headset, but only after I type the command sudo alsa force-reload After a few seconds the headset appears in the configuration tab. I have also tried inserting the line load-module module-switch-on-connect in the /etc/pulse/default.pa but it doesn't help. I have tried purging and autoremoving and reinstalling everything right from alsa to pulseaudio and pulseaudio-module-bluetooth. Nothing works. Is there a workaround to load the headset without using the command force-reload ? To make the pulseaudio daemon recognize the device automatically ?

• Android device connects to my computer, but doesn't play audio over Bluetooth

  I turn on Bluetooth on both my devices and open up Music on my Android. I select a song to play, press the menu button, and tap "Via Bluetooth": I tap on my computer in the "Bluetooth Device Picker": Then it says, under the name of my computer: Connected to media audio Now I should technically be able to play music through my computer, since it "Just Worked" in Kubuntu with Blueman. But nope, something must be up with PulseAudio, because I hear no sound from my computer (I'm running Xubuntu 12.04). The reason I say this is that the devices list in Blueman shows indication of data transfer and it says it's connected, but in the PulseAudio Volume Control has no indication of my Bluetooth device (or Blueman) playing audio.

• Adding a 'network' USB printer

  I have a HP Deskjet 1050a printer, hence the 'network' in the title. Its a bog standard USB home printer. I have it attached to my router (has a USB port in it). I have got it connected and working to with Win8 PC and also a MacBook Air. Can't seem to get it to add as a printer to my Xubuntu laptop(s). It doesn't get detected automatically (not an actual network printer) and i've tried multiple options to get it working. It seems to add it but when printing a test page its saying the printer isn't connected. Ping works fine so it can see it, just can't add it as a printer. With Win8 I had to create a port with the IP of the printer (192.168.1.253 in this case), is there an Ubuntu alternative to do this?

• Flash audio problem; redirecting to Pulse?

  I am having a problem where the sound on flash objects other than YouTube videos are giving a strange distortion. It has a high pitched pulse sound every second or less that resembles skips on a record. I have no idea what the problem is or how to fix it. Does anyone have an idea what I could do to fix this? I am running Xubuntu 11.10. I think I might have redirected everything to pulse using a config file but I cannot seem to find it anywhere. It used the lines 'type pulse' in it. If anyone knows what I am talking about and how to find that file or whether or not it has any relevance I would greatly appreciate it.

• Strange sound distortion using headphones

  When I use headphones, the sound comes out distorted. Voices sound as if they were far away, while instruments that should be in the background sound enhanced. When I play songs with the laptop's integrated speakers everything is alright, and the headphones work normally when plugged into another computer. I tried reloading ALSA and reinstalling some of the related packages, but nothing worked. I'm using Xubuntu 12.04 32-bit. Thanks to anyone who will suggest me how to solve this problem.

• How do I get drivers working for an Nvidia GT560i on 12.04?

  I been using a test Xubuntu 12.04 LTS on my 64 bit workstation, because Ubuntu has dropped support for the nvidia graphic adapters my 10.04 LTS and I haven't been able to get them working. Now update manager has upgraded the kernel from 3.2.0-30-generic to 3.2.0-31-generic, and failed to produce a working nvidia module that the X server can load. Fortunately, when launching the 3.2.0-30-generic kernel, I still have use of the X server. Does anybody know a work-around or fix for this? I'm really worried, this is the last working Ubuntu distribution OS on the computer and I don't want to give up on Ubuntu. Details of problem here.

• Installing package + dependancies and removing them all

  I currently use Xubuntu and was considering installing/trying GNOME Shell or Cinnamon by installing their respective metapackage. However, doing so would result in a massive number of dependencies being installed which would be almost impossible to remove individually at a later date if I decided I didn't like it. I wonder, therefore, if there is a way that I can track which packages Synaptic automatically downloads as part of the process and create a script of some sort to remove them all as well. I could then rest assured that if I don't like any of my new desktop environments, I can remove them in full without leaving a load of other applications and libraries lying around. Thankyou for any help! :)

• Can Acrobat 11 be made to do OCR using multiple CPU cores?

  OCR processing takes time. Using multiple CPU cores would speed up processing. Acrobat 10 was not a multithreaded application. How about Acrobat 11? Does 11 by default do OCR using multiple CPU cores (if available)? If not, are there any workarounds, e.g. scripting, to help make Acrobat 11 do OCR using multiple CPU cores? Either through Acrobat's built in scripting language or using external scripts that launch and direct multiple single thread instances of Acrobat to in parallell to parts of the processing job. Note: This question is not too localized (not limited to a specific moment in time) because (1) Adobe does not release new major Acrobat versions very often (Acrobat 10 was released two years ago) and (2) Adobe Acrobat is a widely used application.

  Using Shotwell, I discovered that to publish to Flickr I need to set up an online account. But the online-accounts system settings only has support for Google, Facebook, Windows Live, Microsoft Exchange and Enterprise Login (Kerberos). How do I add account types?   Gimp launches every time I log into Xubuntu (v. 13.10). Gimp is not shown under Settings Manager- Sessions and startup. It does not appear in ~/.config/autostart. I immediately close Gimp in these cases, so it is not running when I shut down the session. How do I stop Gimp from autolaunching on startup? • Update to kernel 3.12 seems to fail: uname reports old rc7

  I currently run Xubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.12 rc7. Today I tried updating to the latest 3.12 kernel (non-rc), but this seems to fail. When installing the image and headers I see the following error passing by: ... run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.12.0-031200-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.12.0-031200-generichis Error! The dkms.conf for this module includes a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE directive which does not match this kernel/arch. This indicates that it should not be built. ... After rebooting, when I do uname -r or cat /proc/version it tells me that I'm still running on the old rc7 kernel. Since my microphone wasn't working on my Sony Vaio Pro 13 I did download and install the latest ALSA drivers using the oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms package which seem to fix the problem (with the mic). Maybe this has something to do with it? I also tried removing the package using sudo apt-get purge oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms but no success.

• No boot or grub file after using ls command

  I had xubuntu installed, i believe version 12.04 and then tried to dual boot with backbox. It worked from the flash drive but upon installing it onto the hard drive, I could no longer boot backbox. I decided I would just clear my OS and put just backbox on the hard drive and only have a single boot. To do this, I erased my boot file completely which led to my current position. I am put into the grub rescue prompt. I can't do a system restore, I can't boot with anything I might try including puppy linux and a boot rescue, and I've looked up the commands and I've tried to fix this. I can do ls, I find the correct hd but then I'm stuck as I don't have a boot or grub folder. The command is typed as: ls (hd1,msdos1)/ and listed is ./ ../ lost+found/ etc/ media/ bin/ dev/ home/ lib/ mnt/ opt/ proc/ root/ run/ sbin/ selinux/ srv/ sys/ tmp/ usr/ var/ initrd.img vmlinuz cdrom/ apfolder initrd.img.old vmlinuz.old (not sure if it's initrd or init rd.img. as it wraps around the screen there.) I've seen commands regarding boot or grub if they are seen but as listed, they aren't there. Any ideas?

• Cannot usermod -L in LightDM scripts

  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04 and use the LightDM. I want to restrict access to the machine as a kind of parental control. This is how it should work I hook in a script that executes just before the greeter comes up. Within that script some awk processing will read an entry in a config file and will trigger a usermod -L or usermod -U depending on whether the user is allowed to login. While user is logged, a cron job will count down the entry in the config and forces a xfce4-session-logout if time is up. A cron job running on a server will upload the "credits" on a daily base. How is this idea? That's theory, now for the problems It appears for some unknown reason, the usermod command is not executed, neither as part of a display-setup-script nor within the greeter-setup-script. I wrote a small sandbox script usermod -L johndoe 2error.txt touch /etc/blabla 2error.txt The script is executing, cause the blabla file is existing. That means that the script must have been executed with root privileges. error.txt is empty but the usermod command has just no effect. Is this a bug or a feature. What's wrong? • trying to upgrade memory

  I've been using Ubuntu on my laptop for awhile now. Not quite used to it yet. I've got a Acer Aspire with an orig 4 gig mem/500 gig HDD. Running 12.04 presently 32 bit sys. I have the 13.04 upgrade disc and want to upgrade my memory to 8 Gig. Everytime I install the 8 gig memory, the system won't boot to either version. I downloaded the 64 bit version of both versions of Ubuntu but no results yet. Can anyone offer a suggestion here? I'm kinda lost. Additional Information: The memory was purchased through Acer/Kingston. Recommended for this computer. I watched the video on installing it, so I doubt it's installed wrong. (There's only one way of putting it in). I swapped Op Sys, from Ubuntu 12.04 to 13.04 to 13.10 and now to Xubuntu 13.10 64 bit version. I'm still not having any luck with this upgrade. Would it be necessary to upgrade the CPU? It's just a thought, I don't know what else could keep me from utilizing the new memory. Additional Information: Called Kingston this afternoon, they are sending replacement lower density memory modules 2/4 gig - 8 gig. Tech service says I need to upgrade BIOS to utilize new memory install VIA Dos since it is no longer a windows system. I'm not sure how to go about that but it's a learning process I can live with. Thank you all for your help/support. I realize this isn't a Ubuntu problem but each new user of this op sys, seems to share simular problems and maybe someone can use this info to their advantage.

• glm matrix conversion for DirectX

  For on of the coursework specification I need to work with DirectX, so I tried to implement a DirectX Renderer in my small cross-platform framework (to have it optionally available for Windows). Since I want to stick to my dependencies I want use glm for vector/matrix/quaternions math. The vectors seem to be fully compatible with DirectX, but the glm::mat4 is not working properly in DirectX Effects Framework. I assumed the reason is that DirectX uses row majors layouts and OpenGL column majors (although if I remember right internally in HLSL DX uses column major as well), so I transposed the matrix, but I still get no proper results compared to using XNA-Math. XNA-Version of the code (works): XMMATRIX world = XMMatrixIdentity(); XMMATRIX view = XMMatrixLookAtLH(XMVectorSet(5.0, 5.0, 5.0, 1.0f), XMVectorZero(), XMVectorSet(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f)); XMMATRIX proj = XMMatrixPerspectiveFovLH(0.25f*3.14f, 1.25f, 1.0f, 1000.0f); XMMATRIX worldViewProj = world*view*proj; m_fxWorldViewProj->SetMatrix(reinterpret_cast<float*>(&worldViewProj)); This works flawlessly and displays the expected colored cube. • Trouble move-capturing std::unique_ptr in a lambda using std::bind

  I'd like to capture a variable of type std::vector<std::unique_ptr<MyClass>> in a lambda expression (in other words, "capture by move"). I found a solution which uses std::bind to capture unique_ptr (http://stackoverflow.com/a/12744730/2478832) and decided to use it as a starting point.
