  • Database maintenance, big binary table optimization

    Hi i have a huge database, around 1 TB in size, most of the space is consumed by a table which stores images, the tables has right now almost 800k rows. server response time has increased, i would like to know which techniques should i use or you recomend, partitioning? o how to reorganize the table every row is accessed by the image id column, and it has its clustered index by that column, and every two days i reorganize the index and every 7 days i rebuild it, but it seems not to be working any suggestions?

Now I am trying to attach my database file, but I have encountered the error below. I think that the files are like an attached file and I can't attach them. What is difference between an attached file and a non-attached file? How can I attach this file? Please Help Me.   • Windows 2008 as home file server and more

    I currently have a freenas-unit as a NAS, and a Win2k8R2-unit as server. However I would like to consolidate these to units in one. What I really like about the freenas-unit is the ZFS filesystem. And the only reason I care about the ZFS filesystem is the easy way I can grow an existing filesystem just by inserting a new drive. How would this work in Win2k8? If I setup my unit with a separate drive as C: and a 1TB drive as D:. The D: would then be segmented into d:\Videos d:\Music d:\Pictures. When everything gets close to filling the storage-drive, I would like to expand the storage, but I wouldn't want to have E:\Videos or d:\Videos2 (using the NTFS folder mount thingy). I still want all my Videos to reside in D:\Videos and I want the OS to decide which drive it's going to be stored on... Some kind of on-the-fly jbod expansion :) Is this at all possible in Windows 2008?

  • Setting up Raid 1 Array for Home Server

    I'm not sure if this is even possible, but it's worth asking on here! Essentially I have a old machine at home (well, not old hardware wise, but I recently built a new gaming rig), which I decided to install a copy of W2008 R2 on and use as a file/backup server and media center'ish machine. As of now, it has a single drive partitioned into C and D, with D being the Data partition. I have happened to find an old 1TB SATA drive lying around at home, and was wondering if it's possible to setup a Raid 1 array in my rig within Windows without needing to lose everything on my first drive (or maybe even just mirror a specific partition, say the Data partition, as this is just what stores my photos etc). Maybe this isn't possible, but you never know :) Regards, T.C

  • Is there any reason not to go directly from client-side Javascript to a database?

    So, let's say I'm going to build a Stack Exchange clone and I decide to use something like CouchDB as my backend store. If I use their built-in authentication and database-level authorization, is there any reason not to allow the client-side Javascript to write directly to the publicly available CouchDB server? Since this is basically a CRUD application and the business logic consists of "Only the author can edit their post" I don't see much of a need to have a layer between the client-side stuff and the database. I would simply use validation on the CouchDB side to make sure someone isn't putting in garbage data and make sure that permissions are set properly so that users can only read their own _user data. The rendering would be done client-side by something like AngularJS. In essence you could just have a CouchDB server and a bunch of "static" pages and you're good to go. You wouldn't need any kind of server-side processing, just something that could serve up the HTML pages. Opening my database up to the world seems wrong, but in this scenario I can't think of why as long as permissions are set properly. It goes against my instinct as a web developer, but I can't think of a good reason. So, why is this a bad idea? I feel like I should add a few generic assumptions instead of calling out CouchDB and AngularJS specifically. So let's assume that: The database can authenticate users directly from its hidden store All database communication would happen over SSL Data validation can (but maybe shouldn't?) be handled by the database The only authorization we care about other than admin functions is someone only being allowed to edit their own post We're perfectly fine with everyone being able to read all data (EXCEPT user records which may contain password hashes) Administrative functions would be restricted by database authorization No one can add themselves to an administrator role The database is relatively easy to scale There is little to no true business logic; this is a basic CRUD app

  • Force database read to master if slave data is stale

    I previously asked a specific question about this database replication for new user signup to which I got an answer, but I want to ask this in the more general sense. I have a database setup in which I am using a master/slave combination. I am using the slaves for load balancing (the data itself is partitioned/sharded across multiple databases, but each database has X slaves for load balancing). Let's say I write some data to the master. Now I do a subsequent read which hits a slave, but the slave has not yet caught up to the master. Is there a way (which can be done quickly since it will happen frequently) to determine if the data is stale in the slave so I can then route to the master? In my previous question, it was suggested to do simultaneous writes to the cache and the database. This solution seems practical, but there is still a chance that the data may have been removed from the cache but not yet updated in the slave. A possible solution is to ensure the cache is big enough (based on the typical application load) so the data will not be evicted within the time frame it takes to replicate the data. This seems like it may be feasible. Can anyone provide additional insight into this question? Thanks!

  • How to back up a database with thousands of files

    I am working with a Fedora server that runs a customized software package. The server software is quite old, and its database consists of 1,723 files. The database files are constantly changing - they continually grow and changes are not necessarily appended to the end. So right now, we currently back up every 24 hours at midnight when all users are off of the system and the database is in an internally consistent state. The problem is that we have the potential to lose an entire day's worth of work, which would be unrecoverable. So I'd like to know if there is a way to take some sort of an instantaneous snapshot of these database files that we could back up every 30 minutes or so. I've read about Linux LVM snapshots, and am thinking that I might be able to do accomplish the goal by taking a snapshot, rsync'ing the files to a backup server, then dropping the snapshot. But I've never done this before,so I don't know if this is the "right" fix. Any ideas on this? Any better solutions? Thanks!

  • Synchronize Active Directory to Database

    We are in a situation where we would like to offer our customers to be able to manage their users themselves. It is around 300 customers with up to a total of 10.000 users. Besides creating, updating and removing users, they will very often read information about users for statics and other useful informations available. All this functionality, should be available from an Intranet web page (.NET Framework 4) that the users will access through Citrix or similar. Now the problem is that we would really like the users not to query AD directly for each request, but rather make them hit a database that is synchronized with AD. It would be sufficient to run this synchronization a few time each day (maybe every 5. hour). When they create a user, it should not be available right away, but reviewed and then created within two days (the next step would be to remove this manual review, but that's out of scope for this question). What do you think about this synchronization of AD? Does anyone have any experience with it and is it something that is done in other organizations, where you will have lots of requests which is better handled by a database than AD (I presume)? Are there any techniques out there for writing such a script that synchronizes AD with database tables? My primary concern is the groups/members relations which can be rather complicated. Or are there software that synchronizes AD with a database? Any comments will be much appreciated. Thank you.

ORACLE CERTIFIED ASSOCIATE (OCA)  The Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) for Oracle Database 12c objectives measure IT professionals' mastery of day-to-day administration skills and their ability to manage the challenges they're likely to encounter on the job.   • What advantages do we have when creating a separate mapping table for two relational tables

    In various open source CMS, I have noticed that there is a separate table for mapping two relational tables. Like for categories and products, there is a separate product_category_mapping table. This table just has a primary key and two foreign keys from the categories and product tables. My question is what are the benefits of this database design rather than just linking the tables directly by defining a foreign key in either table? Is it just matter of convenience?

  • Is There a Real Advantage to Generic Repository?

    Was reading through some articles on the advantages of creating Generic Repositories for a new app (example). But given the slow uptake of Linq on other data access technologies outside of Entity Framework, what advantage does this provide over working directly with the DbContext? I attempted to write a PetaPoco version of the Repository, but PetaPoco doesn't support Linq Expressions, which makes creating a generic IRepository interface pretty much useless unless you only use it for the basic GetAll, GetById, Add, Update, Delete, and Save methods and utilize it as a base class. Then you have to create specific repositories with specialized methods to handle all the "where" clauses that I could previously pass in as a predicate. Is the Generic Repository pattern useful for anything outside of Entity Framework? If not, why would someone use it at all instead of working directly with Entity Framework?     We're deciding on how to store translations of some descriptions of database items. We could go the traditional way and keep a translations table (and a language table and an object_translation linking table) OR we thought it might be better to just have a Description column that contains JSON like the following: { "EN": "This is the translation in English", "EE" : "See on kirjeldus eesti keeles" } Are there any serious downsides as to why we shouldn't use this? (I haven't seen it being used anywhere else)

    I have informix 11.5 running in my Win-2003 box and few databases running in it. System databases have locale en_us.819 My custom databases have locale en_us.57372 (UTF8). I am very much happy that my sessions created some curiosity for one of the most important feature of the SQL Server. Statistics are the heart of the SQL Server. Microsoft has published a white paper on the subject how statistics are useful to Query Optimizer. Here is the abstract of the same white paper from Microsoft. Statistics Used by the Query Optimizer in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Writer: Eric N. Hanson and Yavor Angelov Microsoft SQL Server 2008 collects statistical information about indexes and column data stored in the database. These statistics are used by the SQL Server query optimizer to choose the most efficient plan for retrieving or updating data. This paper describes what data is collected, where it is stored, and which commands create, update, and delete statistics. By default, SQL Server 2008 also creates and updates statistics automatically, when such an operation is considered to be useful. Few days ago, I received DM asking What is an AdventureWorks database and why in all the examples I use that instead of any other database (e.g. Pubs or  Northwind)? As matter of fact, when I went back to my question list, which I have yet not answered, there were a few more variations of this same question. AdventureWorks is a Sample Database shipped with SQL Server and it can be downloaded from http://codeplex.com site.   • SQL SERVER – GUID vs INT – Your Opinion

    I think the title is clear what I am going to write in your post. This is age old problem and I want to compile the list stating advantages and disadvantages of using GUID and INT as a Primary Key or Clustered Index or Both (the usual case). Let me start a list by suggesting one advantage and one disadvantage in each case. INT Advantage: Numeric values (and specifically integers) are better for performance when used in joins, indexes and conditions. Numeric values are easier to understand for application users if they are displayed. Disadvantage: If your table is large, it is quite possible it will run out of it and after some numeric value there will be no additional identity to use. GUID Advantage: Unique across the server. Disadvantage: String values are not as optimal as integer values for performance when used in joins, indexes and conditions. More storage space is required than INT. Please note that I am looking to create list of all the generic comparisons. There can be special cases where the stated information is incorrect, feel free to comment on the same.
