• Freelance for moderately complex admin support

  Mailing lists and question/answers works great for problems that are independently encountered by several people. But sometimes we (as in experienced amateurs) run into problems that aren't so common, nobody has blogged about it and experts advice not readily available. For IT-admin related stuff can someone please recommend how can amateurs pay experts and get hands on advice. The kinds of problems I am talking about are like setting up nxserver or openvpn on freeBSD box. The install/config is not so simple, the documentation not easy for non-it professionals. Therefore getting step by step advice would be quite helpful. Thanks sandeep

• Use Backup Exec configuration 2010 R3 file on 2012

  I'm looking to upgrade my backup solution from Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 (Which i believe is the same version as 13) to Backup Exec 2012. Now, it's pretty easy to open BEutility and use the "Copy media server configuration"-function in 2010 R3, but I have not found any answers as to whether this file can be imported flawlessly into 2012 or not. It would save loads of time if it's doable. Since I HAVE TO remove the 2010 installation before installing 2012, it's not possible to just test it. I need to know before I go through with it. Anyone who's tried the same? PS: Running Windows Server Standard 2008 R2

• Keyboard shortcut / navigation references

  I use the mouse much too freely, and my wrists are not thanking me for it. I have been meaning to try and use the keyboard more as my sole means of navigating Windows, but I am having trouble sticking with it because when I need to do something and I cannot find the right shortcut, I grab the mouse and forget to let go of it again. Personally, the main software that I need keyboard reference sheets for would be: Firefox Thunderbird Visual Studio Windows itself But I would encourage more general inclusion of shortcut references in the answers in case anyone else tries to make the same transition I am attempting ;) What I am looking for is reference material that is as comprehensive as possible so that over time I can hopefully learn to do everything with the keyboard and spare my wrists. Bonus points for references that can be printed in a reasonable size so I can keep them next to my machine in hardcopy. I know there is an answer for Windows already: Is there a definitive reference for Windows shortcuts keys?, but I am leaving it in my question in case anyone has a better printable alternative.

• Operating Systems supported by the Intel SR1435VP2 Server Platform?

  I recently had two Intel SR1435VP2 Servers (with SE7320VP2 server boards) donated to me from a colleague. Google hasn't yielded much more than user manuals when searching for OS-compatibility answers. I have worked with flavors of Linux such as Ubuntu and Debian, but Intel only documents that they have tested proprietary operating systems such as SuSE, Solaris and Red Hat as documented on their driver downloads page. Has anyone worked with these machines before, and if so, do you know if the SR1435VP2/E7320 chipset supports OS's such as CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu? If you need more information or clarification, let me know. This is all new for me. Thanks in advance.

• Running Coldfusion Commands inside an HTML File?

  Hello, Is it possible to run CF commands inside an HTML file by updating Apache configs/htaccess file? When I searched online, I didn't come across any answers for CF, saw several posting for PHP (perhaps I am not searching for the right terms ... ?). Specifically, we have CF 6 (I know, don't say it) on Solaris, and Apache 2, and was thinking of using this line: AddType application/x-httpd-coldfusion .html so we can use cfinclude inside the HTML files, but this did not work. • Install SQL Server 2000 on virtual machine Windows Server 2008 (HyperV)

  Hi, My hierarchy ask me to setup a production Windows server 2008 virtual machine (HyperV) with SQL 2000 Standard Ed. installed on it. I can't find on the net much information about the relative "compatibility" of SQL2000 on WinSrv2008. Of course I found some obscure answers like : "it's impossible, it's not supported, don't do it". I already setup the machine, it's working, but... I don't know where I'm going. Do you experienced this kind of configuration ? Could you give me some advices ? Could you tell me the pros and cons ? • what to do when ctrl-c can't kill a process?

  Ctrl-c doesn't always work to kill the current process (for instance, if that process is busy in certain network operations). In that case, you just see "^C" by your cursor, and can't do much else. What's the easiest way to force that process to die now without losing my terminal? Summary of answers below: Usually, you can Ctrl-z to put the process to sleep, and then do "kill -9 process-pid", where you find the process's pid with 'ps' and other tools. On Bash (and possibly other shells) you can do "kill -9 %1" (or '%N' in general) which is easier. If Ctrl-z doesn't work, you'll have to open another terminal and kill from there.

  There seems to be a lot of questions / answers about doing the reverse, but not as much info for USB - DVD. Problem I created a bootable USB drive using YUMI. The USB drive is working great, and contains the following: Linux Mint 13 Linux Mint Debian Debian 6 Ubuntu 12.04.1 Fedora 17 A bit of a mix of DVD and Live versions. I have a spindle of DVD+R DL blank DVD's. I would like to create a bootable .iso from this USB drive so I can burn multiple copies of it to pass around to friends! I've created an iso using Folder2ISO, but it coastered my DVD because it wasn't bootable. I don't really want to waste a whole spindle! How would you go about doing such a thing?

  In IM apps (not only), there is a browser frame that appears and prompts for example to connect to facebook account, ebuddy for example (can't post pictures :( ) http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2013/06/26//130626121230193046.jpg My question is: how can I know if this frame is from facebook.com and not a phishing website. I know that the apps in the play store are legit (mostly at least), but how can we trust apps that we install from outside the store? Or is there any way to check the credentials form action? • Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem? • How to configure DNS BIND to work locally on one computer?

  I want to do some changes to the BIND source code. In order to test those changes I want to be able to post queries to my local BIND server and for it to use only the local zone files. I know how to make the zone files and somewhat the named.conf file but what should i put in /etc/resolv.conf? In resolv.conf currently there is the line nameserver 192.168.0.1 witch i guess is my router IP address and the queries go through the router to my ISP. I want those queries to go to the local BIND server and to look for answers in the zone files i provided. Is there a way for this using resolf.conf file or should i do something else?

  I am setting up two servers; one iis 7 and one sql 2008. I need to use reporting services. What is the best way to set up reporting services so that my iis box can serve the reports. I'm sure this is not an unusual configuration, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding an answer to this - probably because I am using the wrong terminology. Also does this configuration require two sql licenses (one for each server)? This sound like a lengthy explanation so links or even the correct terminology for this so I can find the answers myself would be much appreciated. Thanks

• How can I use rsync with a FAT file system?

  I would like to write a simple backup script that saves some data to a FAT drive. Should I reformat the drive and use a better file system or is it possible to use rsync with FAT? If so, what problems might I run into? Would performance be a lot worse? EDIT: This is on linux, didn't even know there was a rsync for windows. The sources are various file systems (it's a mess), and the destination is currently formatted with FAT32. Thank you for your answers, I'll probably go for a reformat, since I'm not completely sure about the file sizes we'll have.

• ATI Radeon Drivers works with which linux distribution and version? [closed]

  I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. Almost every new linux distribution seems to have an issue with it, when i install the drivers. Working without utilizing the graphics card leaves me so unproductive. So i made a plan to use older versions of linux, any distribution suitable as a desktop distribution. The problems that i am facing are, 1) After installing drivers the system boots and hangs, 2) There are unusual lines over the screen 3) After upgrade system doesn't start properly(hangs the usual old way) The kind of answers i am looking for is, distribution X(the newer the version the better) doesn't have the above problem after installing drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. UPDATE: The new drivers released by AMD seems to fix all the issues, although they are still beta

• Possible to recover older, previously deleted files with R-studio?

  The files and directories on one of my ntfs partition were wiped out last time. I used R-studio to scan the partition, and it did find many files, actually more than the capacity of the partition. This is because R-studio found files that were deleted even earlier. So I wonder if it is possible to specify those files and directories deleted last time instead of those deleted earlier for recovery? R-studio has a free demo version, for which scanning is free,but recovery isn't. • How to switch off the monitor when mouse reaches the edge of the screen?

  I have 2 computers at home (Windows XP and Windows 7), but one monitor for both of them. They are connected to this monitor using different interfaces: DVI and VGA. I'm also using one keyboard and one mouse to control both PCs with the help of Synergy or Input Director. But I still need to manually switch between monitor interfaces. I wonder, if there's some way (software) that will switch this interfaces (turn off the monitor), when reach the edge of the screen with the mouse. Until now I found several answers, which help to avoid pressing hardware buttons, but still can not do the job automatically based on mouse pointer coordinates. Thank you.

• Is Apache ReverseProxy to Passenger Standalone an acceptable production deployment?

  I have the need to deploy Rails 3 apps, using RVM and gemsets, and am expecting “public” traffic (i.e. this is not an internal-only app). I also must use Apache as the public interface to my app. I understand that Passenger Standalone can help accomplish the rails/RVM end, and I have successfully set it up in my development environment. My question is how viable this setup is for a production deployment. Is deploying via Apache configured to ReverseProxy to my passenger-powered Rails app going to create problems? Since I'm designing the production deployment now, I want to understand if I should spend the additional time to set up Passenger connected to Apache and have that Passenger communicate with Passenger Standalone instance running my Rails app. So, I'm looking for one of I guess three answers: Apache Reverse Proxy to Passenger Standalone will be generally fine You should not use the Apache/Passenger Standalone configuration, but set up Passenger on the Apache side as well Your entire setup is just Wrong, please RTFM (and include link to "FM")

• Is it reasonable to make a RAID-1 array with a ram disk and a physical disk to maximize read performance and protect data?

  In one of the answers on SO (I forgot which one) I've seen a suggestion to make a RAID-1 array composed of a RAM disk and a physical partition. By adding the physical partition with --write-mostly and enabling --write-behind the system should read everything instantly from the RAM disk but still save all data to the physical partition so that the data are preserved and the RAID array can be assembled again after reboot. Is such a setup reasonable? Will it perform any better in some scenario than having just the physical partition and perhaps tweaking the kernel to favor disk cache (swappiness and vfs_cache_pressure)?

• formatting a column based on another columns cell TEXT not value in excel

  I have dates that are running off a formula in that column based on information it is collecting from other worksheets. I have another column that lists text answers based on a different formula that that column is running. It is a customer list that runs with names going down page and multiple columns of information for each client running across page What i want to do is: If column j says "paid" then turn column m - same row - a color or border or something I will repeat this formula for the various things that j can say, just cant figure out how to make conditional formatting read j to change m. To complicate things, in addition to the formula running to collect the date in m, there is also a conditional format set up for m that changes the color of the cells after a certain date. I want to be able to keep that formula, in addition to the one that you are assisting with...i will use highlighting, or something different to avoid any conflicts.

I want to create a new group called restricted which allows its users to use Audio devices and Video devices only, and I want to add a user called visitors to that group. By using Users and Groups, I was able to create a new user account called visitors, and a new group called restricted. But I can't figure out how to add those settings to the group restricted, and add the visitors user account to that group.   There are answers out there to this question, but all of them have been under explianed so hence to difficult to coprehend and use them to my advantage. I want to do the seemingly simple (but not) task of Draging a Formula (Filling a series) across Column's while increasing the formula row number relativley. For Example to drag this formula: | =A1 | =A2 | =A3 Some other notes, Transposing by copy paste has proven too difficult for the amount of data. Offset and Indirect has been used by other people to do this but I don't get how they work at all so when I attempt to use them I don't know how to format it to my range. • When load balancing, must all copies of static web page be exactly the same?

  I am used to get answers for everything on the web, but not this time... Yesterday I enable Amazon DNS weight functionally to load balance 7 websites between two different IP addresses (split 50%-50%). Both servers run IIS 8.5, sites runs well on both sides. Today I found out that Google WebMasterTools is reporting fails error with file robots.txt, all close to 50% of access try errors. The robots.txt file is ok and accessible (even via Google testing URL page) on both servers. Lets say current version of static web pages are on the first computer and the updated version of the same web pages are on the second computer. Can it be the problem? When load balancing, can static web pages be slightly different from one host server to the other? Thank you for your help

  I have an windows 7 laptop and I have installed openvpn 2.2x as client. The laptop has 2 ethernet cards, one of them is wireless. The wireless lan is 192.168.1.0/24 The Fix lan is 192.168.2.0/24 If I connect to the openvpn server useing the Fix lan the I can connect properly and for testing I ping to my openvpn server 10.0.0.1 that answers correctly. But if I connect to the openvpn server useing the wireless lan, I can establish the connection but pinging to the server isn´t possible. The packets goes allways lost. Why can this happen? In an other laptop where windows xp is installed and with the same lan configuratio everything works propperly. In both cases the firewall is configured to access the vnc server and the server directories useing samba. With the XP I have no problems. I will thank you for all help Ignacio

• Photoshop changes colors when moved to a different monitor

  This Yahoo! answers question pretty much sums up my predicament. Unfortunately I haven't really found an actual answer. Here's a screen shot of what happens when I place Photoshop between my monitors. Imagine that the left side of my laptop is the right square and the yellow is the right side of my monitor. When I move the program to one side fully or the other, it takes on the corresponding color. Obviously the color on the right is correct and Photoshop is changing the color of the image when it moves to my external monitor. Also notice how none of the tools or anything are different colors, just the actual image itself. How do I fix this? EDIT You may also notice that the color palette in the left corner is showing that yellow tinge. I didn't actually pick that yellow color, it's supposed to be showing the grey on the left that I used to fill in the square.
