• EF 4.1 Code First Detaching Entity

  I am trying to add an entity to the DB. Once I have added it, I want to detach it, so I can manipulate the object safely without making any changes to the DB. After calling context.SaveChanges() I do the following to detach the entity: // save context.Stories.Add(story); // attach tags. They already exists in the database foreach(var tag in story.Tags) context.Entry(tag).State = System.Data.EntityState.Unchanged; context.SaveChanges(); context.Entry(story).State = System.Data.EntityState.Detached; However, changing the entity state to DETACHED will remove all related entities associated with the my entity. Is there a way to stop this ? If I don't detach the entity, all my changes are sent to the DB next time I call context.SaveChanges() Thanks!!

  I am writing a app which can programatically clear application cache of all the third party apps installed on the device. I am not able to delete the cache directory since the file list is always null. Is there any other way to clear the application cache?

Basically I have an EF model and I am adding some Eager Loaded entities and i want to put them in the partial class context Eager namespace.   I have, in EF5, two entities: User and Role. Between User and Role there is a many to many relation. I don't have an entity for the UserRoles database which sets the relation. I have a User and I want to delete a role without loading it from the database. • How to make area outside of custom dialog view unclickable?

  I created a custom dialog (no, this is not dialog object) from an image and some other views. The conflict I am having with this custom dialog (again, this is a layout) is that the area around it closes the custom dialog. Is there a way I can make the outside area unclickable? I have tried wrapping the dialog view with a fullscreen frameLayout w/ transparent background, and then programmatically I set the frame attribute to setClickable(false). framelayout.setClickable(false); This does nothing. It still closes the dialog. Any other suggestions? Thank you in advance. We also continue to support ASP.NET 3.5 and ASP.NET 4.0. With this release, we’ve made several important bug fixes. The Superexpert team focused on fixing the highest voted issues associated with the CascadingDropDown control. I’ve created a list of these bug fixes later in this blog post. • Multi-tenant ASP.NET MVC - Views

  Part I – Introduction Part II – Foundation Part III – Controllers   So far we have covered the basic premise of tenants and how they will be delegated. Now comes a big issue with multi-tenancy, the views. In some applications, you will not have to override views for each tenant. However, one of my requirements is to add extra views (and controller actions) along with overriding views from the core structure. This presents a bit of a problem in locating views for each tenant request. I have chosen quite an opinionated approach at the present but will coming back to the “views” issue in a later post. What’s the deal? The path I’ve chosen is to use precompiled Spark views. I really love Spark View Engine and was planning on using it in my project anyways. However, I ran across a really neat aspect of the source when I was having a look under the hood. There’s an easy way to hook in embedded views from your project. There are solutions that provide this, but they implement a special Virtual Path Provider. While I think this is a great solution, I would rather just have Spark take care of the view resolution. The magic actually happens during the compilation of the views into a bin-deployable DLL. After the views are compiled, the are simply pulled out of the views DLL. Each tenant has its own views DLL that just has “.Views” appended after the assembly name as a convention. The list of reasons for this approach are quite long. The primary motivation is performance. I’ve had quite a few performance issues in the past and I would like to increase my application’s performance in any way that I can. My customized build of Spark removes insignificant whitespace from the HTML output so I can some some bandwidth and load time without having to deal with whitespace removal at runtime.   How to setup Tenants for the Host In the source, I’ve provided a single tenant as a sample (Sample1). This will serve as a template for subsequent tenants in your application. The first step is to add a “PostBuildStep” installer into the project. I’ve defined one in the source that will eventually change as we focus more on the construction of dependency containers. The next step is to tell the project to run the installer and copy the DLL output to a folder in the host that will pick up as a tenant. This means something like MultiTenancy.Tenants.Sample1.dll and MultiTenancy.Tenants.Sample1.Views.dll will both be copied along with the debug symbols. This is probably the simplest way to go about this, but it is a tad inflexible. For example, what if you have dependencies? The preferred method would probably be to use IL Merge to merge your dependencies with your target DLL. This would have to be added in the build events. Another way to achieve that would be to simply bypass Visual Studio events and use MSBuild.   I also got a question about how I was setting up the controller factory. I’m utilizing assembly scanners in StructureMap as a simple way to pull in DLLs that are not in the AppDomain. Remember that there is a dependency on the host in the tenants and a tenant cannot simply be referenced by a host because of circular dependencies.   Tenant View Engine TenantViewEngine is a simple delegator to the tenant’s specified view engine. You might have noticed that a tenant has to define a view engine. public interface IApplicationTenant { .... IViewEngine ViewEngine { get; } } The trick comes in specifying the view engine on the tenant side. This method (inside the abstract class) will load the Views assembly and load the compilation into Spark’s “Descriptors” that will be used to determine views. There is some trickery on determining the file location… but it works just fine.   Up Next There’s just a few big things left such as StructureMap configuring controllers with a convention instead of specifying types directly with container construction and content resolution. I will also try to find a way to use the Web Forms View Engine in a multi-tenant way we achieved with the Spark View Engine without using a virtual path provider. I will probably not use the Web Forms View Engine personally, but I’m sure some people would prefer using WebForms because of the maturity of the engine. • SQL Server 2008 SQLCLR Issue

  I have a SQLCLR that was originally running on SQL Server 2005 DB. I have since rebuilt the CLR to run on SQL Server 2008. The CLR requires a reference to WindowsBase.dll. I added WindowsBase.dll as an assembly to the SQL Server 2008 DB. When I try to use the rebuilt CLR I get the message Could not load file or assembly 'WindowsBase, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. Assembly in host store has a different signature than assembly in GAC. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131050) I tried to drop and recreate the WindowsBase assembly (making sure to use the dll from the GAC) but I still get the above error. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Common Update 29 Dec 08 Been trying out Aaron Stebner's suggestions to place 64-bit assemblies onto an isolated location (e.g. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\GAC_64) and creating additional entries in the registry like HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft.NETFramework\AssemblyFolders\GAC_64 or HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft.NETFramework\v2.0.50727\AssemblyFoldersEx\GAC_64 but Visual Studio 2005 is still not picking it up....

• Getting Runtime Assemblies in Silverlight 3

  Hello, I am currently writing a framework dll which has an AssemblyHelper. This helper stores Runtime and UserAdded assemblies to easily instantiate new objects. The .NET part of the framework uses: AppDomain MyDomain = AppDomain.CurrentDomain; Assembly[] AssembliesLoaded = MyDomain.GetAssemblies(); _runtimeAssemblies = AssembliesLoaded; This gets me all the assemblies I need. But the problem is I can't use this with Silverlight and I have no idea what to use now. Currently I am using: Assembly[] AssembliesLoaded = {Assembly.GetCallingAssembly()}; But this only adds the Assembly of my framework and not the one of the application or any other runtime assembly. • Issues with ILMerge, Lambda Expressions and VS2010 merging?

  A little Background For quite some time now, it’s been possible to merge multiple .NET assemblies into a single assembly using ILMerge in Visual Studio 2008.  This is especially helpful when writing wrapper assemblies for 3rd-party libraries where it’s desirable to minimize the number of assemblies for distribution.  During the merge process, ILMerge will take a set of assemblies and merge them into a single assembly.  The resulting assembly can be either an executable or a DLL and is identified as the primary assembly. Issue During a recent project, I discovered using ILMerge to merge assemblies containing lambda expressions in Visual Studio 2010 is resulting in invalid primary assemblies.  The code below is not where the initial issue was identified, I will merely use it to illustrate the problem at hand. In order to describe the issue, I created a console application and a class library for calculating a few math functions utilizing lambda expressions.  The code is available for download at the bottom of this blog entry. The MathLib.dll assembly was built in release configuration and copied to the MathLib folder.  The following folder hierarchy was used for this example:   The project file for ILMergeLambdasConsole project file was edited to add the ILMerge post-build configuration.  The following lines were added near the bottom of the project file:  <Target Name="AfterBuild" Condition="'$(Configuration)' == 'Release'"> <Exec Command="&quot;..\..\lib\ILMerge\Ilmerge.exe&quot; /ndebug /out:@(MainAssembly) &quot;@(IntermediateAssembly)&quot; @(ReferenceCopyLocalPaths->'&quot;%(FullPath)&quot;', ' ')" /> <Delete Files="@(ReferenceCopyLocalPaths->'$(OutDir)%(DestinationSubDirectory)%(Filename)%(Extension)')" /> </Target> The ILMergeLambdasConsole project was modified to reference the MathLib.dll located in the MathLib folder above. ILMerge and ILMerge.exe.config was copied into the ILMerge folder shown above.  The contents of ILMerge.exe.config are: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <requiredRuntime safemode="true" imageVersion="v4.0.30319" version="v4.0.30319"/> </startup> </configuration> Post-ILMerge After compiling and building, the MathLib.dll assembly will be merged into the ILMergeLambdasConsole executable.  Unfortunately, executing ILMergeLambdasConsole.exe now results in a crash.  The ILMerge documentation recommends using PEVerify.exe to validate assemblies after merging.  Executing PEVerify.exe against the ILMergeLambdasConsole.exe assembly results in the following error:    Further investigation by using Reflector reveals the divisibleBy method in the MathHelpers class looks a bit questionable after the merge.     Prior to using ILMerge, the same divisibleBy method appeared as the following in Reflector: It’s pretty obvious something has gone awry during the merge process.  However, this is only occurring when building within the Visual Studio 2010 environment.  The same code and configuration built within Visual Studio 2008 executes fine.  I’m still investigating the issue.  If anyone has already experienced this situation and solved it, I would love to hear from you.  However, as of right now, it looks like something has gone terribly wrong when executing ILMerge against assemblies containing Lambdas in Visual Studio 2010. Now I want to replace SomeClass from assembly A with the one in assembly B. I tried a few things, but I know that for one of my attempts, it actually remapped a method call like this: Console.WriteLine("Test."); ...into this: int.WriteLine("Test."); That can't be right. What is the correct way to replace a class with Mono.Cecil?

• Project. Properties.Settings versus plain old appSettings?

  I have an assembly built that uses appSettings in the app.config...pretty straight forward. however, I'm referencing this assembly in a web service, and that web service contains the nAnt build file for this service plus being the entry point for everything. Ideally I'd like to be able to set the assembly's appConfig values from the build file, but is this possible? Or do I have to switch to using the Settings values of the assembly and do something like this in the build: <xmlpoke file="${PublishLocation}\web.config" xpath="//applicationSettings/Namespace.AssemblyClass.Properties.Settings/setting[@name='ExchangeServer']/value" value="${ServerName}" /> You get the idea. Is this possible with just a config? My ideal situation would be to keep the settings more flexible in the appConfig so that when everything is on the server, if frogs rain down, I can update the assembly's config values without rebuilding the solution. You may reference it when compiling the program files either using the /ref: switch at the command line or you may add a statically reference to the assembly in Visual Studio. But how do you link to an assembly in .NET? Does he mean, load the assembly using Reflection (Assembly.LoadFile())? Or, the Win32 API LoadLibrary()? Or, does .NET have a linker that I have never heard of?
