  How to manage filtering by MAC in Ubuntu? Scenario: Ubuntu DHCP is configured and working (network 192.168.1.0) a) Laptop 1 is set in configuration on Ubuntu as static IP Laptop 1 is configured for automatic IP and when is connected to server everything works. I'm taking laptop 2 which is configured as static IP 192.168.1.10 and his configuration is not set in Ubuntu dhcpd.conf After laptop 2 is connected internet working. It is possible to do MAC filtering which disallow to connect PCs with address IP set as static but MAC address is not configured in Ubuntu (something like: intruder in network)?

• Use Amazon EC2 as a backup server

  I would like to use Amazon EC2 as an emergency backup database+web server in the event our primary host becomes unavailable. I feel like I wouldn't have trouble setting up a Windows instance, install SQL Server and get the web server up and running (would take a few hours, plus installing various libraries, our source code, etc). My question relates to pricing. If I simply "stop" the instance rather than "terminate" it, does that stop counting "instance-hours"? I would prefer not to terminate the instance and lose all that work I spent setting it up. If I must "terminate" in order to stop the billing - is it possible to make an image of the server after I have set it all up, then save that image somewhere (S3?) Is this something that people do regularly? Ideally this instance would just be waiting in the wings for an issue with our host, but costing us nothing except perhaps data storage costs.

  I'd like to join three ideas into one interesting and sometimes useful feature. There was a question about using multiple passwords earlier this year, but it didn't receive much attention. I'd like to ask the question again after showing an interesting and new way to use the feature. • Syncing between computers / batch download

  I have synced files from two different devices. Now I want to copy to contents of the synced files to the other device. Using the web interface, it seems only possible to download one file at a time. Is there a way to setup automatic sync or to download all the files in a folder with one step? Thanks in advance for your time. I was using the web interface to ubuntu, but an answer for Ubuntu One would also be ok.

• InnoDB table locks without apparent reason

  Hi, I have an InnoDB table for visitors' counting, which has perfectly worked for several years, but it failed twice yesterday, may be cause of the increase of visitors Without apparent reason, this table locked, with hundreds of DELETE an REPLACE INTO queries (+500) with "updating" or "cleaning up" status. (I've no more the copy of the processlist...) This table contains few entries, between 500 and 1500, so the updating queries are usualy very fast and don't lock. I don't know where I must search to find the cause of this problem and resolve it definitively. • My ubuntu 11.10 gets weird lately

  I have quite a lot problems lately(about 2 weeks) running Ubuntu 11.10. First, flash playback in chrome hangs and lags all the time. While in Firefox is better, but still lags. Playing video files in the preinstalled Movie Player lags too. Second, I've turned automatic on and in some occasions, after I switched the computer on and successfully loaded the desktop, however, in just a minute or so, the screen just got black out and directed me back to the login page. I thinks there are bugs, please tell me how to correct those. Sysinfo: CPU: i5-2400 MB: GA H61M D2P B3 (no video card) Drive: Intel 320 40GB Thanks. p.s. should I upgrade to 12.04??

• Dual boot (Win 7 & Ubuntu 13.10 clock problem

  I'm a "newbie" to Ubuntu, but I've been wrestling with this problem for several hours and don't seem to be able to solve it: When I set the time in Windows (Indianapolis, Eastern U.S. time zone) and then re-boot to Ubuntu, the computer time goes to Hawaiian time. When the time is set in Ubuntu, and the computer is rebooted to Windows the time is advanced by 5 hours. I've set the time in the BIOS, and it seems to make no difference. I've tried setting the time from "automatic" to "manual", all with the same result. Not a big problem, but it shows some underlying glitch. Could anyone explain?

• update-grub is setting a wrong linux root partition

  Initially, Ubuntu was installed on another partition (sda5 or sda4). At some point I did manually move the root partition to sda2. Now, the problem is that whenever a new kernel is installed, the automatic regeneration of the menu.lst is using the OLD Linux partition. So I have to manually change in menu.lst the lines : root (hd0,5) into root (hd0,1) How can I configure update-grub to automatically generate menu.lst with the current Linux root partition? I assume that the (hd0,5) was written somewhere at installation, but I couldn't find it.

• How to Boot or "enter" into ubnutu 11.04 (Natty Narwhall) on PS3 after installing it?

  After failing to install ubuntu 11.04 Desktop version (burned on a dvd, because iso's file size was 726 Mb), in tried the alternate version (about 686 Mb) which i burned into a CD. During the installation process, i manually partitioned the hard drive using ext3. After the installation, the CD ejects itself and i hit "continue". In the k boot prompt i hit "enter" on my the keyboard. I see i welcome message in a dark background (a kind of full screen terminal/console called CLI i think) and was asked to enter my user name and password. After that, instead of booting into the beautiful desktop of Ubuntu, i saw this: ubuntu@my_name$ It was like a line of command i think, where you can use "sudo" commands. It is called a non-graphic mode i think. My my REAL problem is to enter Ubuntu 11.04 with the chocolate-colored background and the African music drum. I tried many commands to boot into the graphic mode of the system such as Ctr+Alt+F7 but nothing happened. In this case, i just saw numbers showing available blocks. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. I also tried startx and sudo startx without result. I DO bought a PS3 BOTH for gaming and for Ubuntu because i can't afford buying a PC. Please help me with my trouble dear Ubuntu 11.04 users. In addition to the release documentation, the following new information is provided: A new document, Using the Image Ops API, describes how to read and write raw pixel data to and from JavaFX images. The Handling JavaFX Events document has been updated with more information on touch events. The Working with Touch Events chapter and Touch Events sample provide information about handling individual touch points to provide sophisticated responses to touch actions. The Implementing Best Practices document has been updated to include information about running tasks on background threads. The Troubleshooting section of Deploying JavaFX Applications now includes a section about disabling the automatic proxy configuration in your application code. • Machine check error on ASUS while booting from USB

  I put the last Ubuntu iso on my USB stick using UNetBootin, after formatting it to fat32. I've already done that before with other operating systems and it worked. I can't actually boot Ubuntu from USB since I get a black screen with the error "Machine check error" on top the an automatic reboot happens. The error appears right after the boot, I can't see anything else before. I'm using my ASUS X54L latop. Does anybody know how to solve this? Installation from CD/DVD works.

• Insanity Day 3

  So on Tuesday (Sept 25th) I did my 2nd Insanity workout (for those keeping track, I’m not counting the fit test as #1) and it was MURDER on my legs. I wasn’t able to get to it yesterday, and I’m noticing a trend in this first week – I can easily push to do it every 2nd day, but life is just too crazy busy right now (yeah yeah, excuses right? I look at it more like priorities – I have a tech conference I’m running next week, crazy days right now). Today I moved to the 3rd workout – but honestly I couldn’t get into it. It was the cardio recovery day, which is a lot of stretching and stuff. I think if I had been doing the first two sessions back to back I’d need it, but I didn’t want to cool down today – I wanted to push! So I moved to the next DVD in the series but for some reason couldn’t get it to run on my computer, even with SlyDVD. So – back to Disc 1 and the Plyometric Cardio Circuit! Fantastic workout again this morning. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not all of a sudden in amazing shape, but I am noticing already that I seem to be somewhat better – I’m really looking forward to my next fit test at the end of the month!

• Generating CMakeLists.txt

  I got a bunch of C++ sources files and headers. They may use external libraries such as Boost e.g. I am interested in the process of building binaries for Windows and *nix. Makefiles (*nix) and .vcproj (Windows) call compilers with some specifications such as the order of compilation, compilation options and stuff. CMakeLists.txt can be used by CMake to build either makefiles or .vcproj and use very helpful commands such as recursive search of files, automatic linkage with known libraries, installers, variables that can be used in source files... Is there any existing tool that would generate a CMakeLists.txt from specified options ? Options could be like : scan this folder and make a library out of it, then scan this other folder and make an executable and automatically link both with Boost as well along with a user friendly installer with generated INSTALL.txt and README.txt. Something very powerful like that.

• 12.04 Login gone wrong

  I seem to have a fault in the login procedure somewhere. When I boooted up I found that if I selected Guest I could use the computer. If I selected my administrator account I was taken straight to the terminal. So I opened a guest session, went to user settings, and unlocked my admin account (it accepted the password!), and amended it to show "password None" and automatic login. I now find that when I boot up I am taken straight to the terminal - if I exit terminal I get the login screen - if I select the administrator login I go back to terminal - if i select guest I can use the PC, and if I select mu normal user account I can use the PC. So I cannot login as an administrator - so admin functions such as update are no longer accessible. Sorry to be so long winde but I am stuck. Can anyone suggest anything - I am a beginner with this

• Performance impact of running Linux in a virtual machine in Windows?

  Hello, I'd like to know what performance impact I could expect running Linux in a virtual machine in Windows. The job I need Linux for is heavy and almost non-stop code compilation with GCC. Dual-boot doesn't look like a very attractive solution, so I'm counting on low VM overhead right now (10-20% would be fine for me, but 50% or more will be unacceptable). Did anyone try to measure the performance difference, are there any comparison tables? What virtual machine with the lowest overhead possible will you suggest? My host OS is Win7 and I've got a modern Core i7 with VT-x present. Thanks!

  Hi, Im doing a POC using Aspectj. class BaseInfo{..} class UserInfo extends BaseInfo{..} class UserService { public void getUser(UserInfo userInfo){..} public void deleteUser(String userId){..} } I've defined an advice, that gets invoked when I pass an UserInfo instance.But when i try to pass the BaseInfo, the advice is not getting invoked. Below block executes the afterMethod as expected for getUser. &ltaop:pointcut id="aopafterMethod" expression="execution(* UserService.*(..,UserInfo,..))" / &gtaop:after pointcut-ref="aopafterMethod" method="afterMethod" / But when i try to give BaseInfo instead of UserInfo, the aspect is not getting triggered. Am i missing something? Kindly help me on this issue.

• How would I go about updating my electronic circuit simulator's 'electricity'?

  I have made an application which allows the user to place down wires, power sources, and inverters on a virtual circuit board. All connections between tiles are automatic, as shown here: As you can see in the last image, the updating of power throughout this grid is not yet functioning. I think I understand how to do this updating conceptually, but getting it to work in my program is appearing to be much more difficult than I first imagined. My source code can be found here. If you have any tips as to how to I might approach this monstrous task, please let me know. EDIT The goal here is to simply get a working application. Getting tiles to pass on power to their neighbors is quite easy, but the tricky part is getting wires to "unpower" after the removal of a power source. The size of the grid is just 18x18, so efficiency really isn't a factor, for those wondering.

• Zebra (ZSDK_API) 1.1.5266 Issue in XCode 4.6

  Basically I'm having this error after I import the Zebra library in Xcode 4.6 Undefined symbols for architecture armv7: "_OBJC_CLASS_$_Linea", referenced from: objc-class-ref in libZSDK_API.a(LineaBtPrinterConnection.o) (maybe you meant: _OBJC_CLASS_$_LineaBtPrinterConnection) ld: symbol(s) not found for architecture armv7 clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation) was wondering if anyone have encountered this issue with this version (1.1.5266) of the ZSDK_API. if anyone knows how to fix this, please post your instructions.
