• Converting Visio (.vsd) files to pdf automatically [migrated]

  I am trying to create a scheduled task to convert all my .vsd files to pdf so all of our devices can read them (linux, mac, smartphones, etc..) and I would prefer not paying for something that can be done with Visio + PDFcreator. The approach of using openoffice doesn't work with .vsd files since it's not a supported format ( Method/tools for batch-converting Microsoft Word files into PDF?) What I've currently is this: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\VISIO.EXE' /pt "Z:\Archive\Files.vsd",-PPDFCREATORPRINTER /nologo That is able to open automatically the document I want and to prepare it to be printed, the only missing part is that it requires me to confirm on the printing dialog. There's some information here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314392 but it doesn't explain abotu non interactive printing.

• Can you span a single file share across multiple servers?

  Let's say I have one large file server that has a company-wide share. That file server constantly runs into space issues. Now let's say I have a dozen or so random servers (print servers, web servers, etc) that have a ton of free space. Is there a way to utilize that in the company-wide file share? Like spanning the storage across different servers but making that transparent to the user? I know the likely answer is going to be get more storage for the file server, but I just curious if this is conceptually possible. Thanks!

• Moving a File While It's In Use -- How Does it work?

  I've noticed that on non-windows OS.... ie linux/mac i can do things like: - Send a zip to a friend over aim - Delete the file while it's in transfer And the transfer does not fail. Or, I can do operations like.. - start a movie - erase the file - the movie still plays to completion (read from disk, not just buffered in memory) Although the files are being "deleted", as i mentioned, they are actually being moved to a different location on the file system... ie a Trash directory or something. So it seems to me like the OS uses a pointer @ the file that is updated when it moves rather than accessing the files directly. Can anyone shed some light on how this AWESOME capability is actually implemented? I'm not even sure what to google to learn more about it. thank you.

• Is there a way to save "work sessions" in linux

  I regularly work on different projects, using different software. For project 1 I need to open for ex : Filezilla, Gedit and Nautilus (set to a specific folder) For project 2 I need to open foz ex : Gimp, Nautilus (set to another specific folder) etc. What I would like is a kind of sessions manager, where I could create entries "project 1", "project 2", etc. And with one click or command, open all the softwares I need. Perhaps there's an easy way to write a batch file for this? Any idea is welcome :)

• Launching multiple applications with a single command/script/shortcut

  I realized a few days ago that every time I sit down at work, I do a few things after unlocking my computer. First, I open up Firefox, then I open up Chrome, then I log in to Digsby. I realized I could probably save repeating this daily by writing a small batch script to open up Firefox and Chrome , but I couldn't figure out how to make it work.. and since the whole effort is to save time I don't want to bash my head around in the windows command prompt to do it. I also tired this in powershell but ran in to a bunch of security nonsense. Is there a way to do this that I am missing? Bonus points if somebody has figured out how to manipulate Digsby via COM , scripting, or python =)

• Copy any file with a specific file extension in subfolders into a folder

  I found a script on here that would use 7zip and extract all the files in all the sub-folders of a specific folder and put them in their own folder using the script below. What I need is add to it or maybe use another script if i have to and specify where i want those files to go instead of putting them in their own folder within the folder. I don't know how to do this and hope someone would be able to help. • FileSystemWatcher.WaitForChanged returns, but there is still a lock on the file

  I have a program that send a document to a pdf printer driver and that driver prints to a particular directory. After the print I want to attach the pdf to an e-mail (MailMessage) and send it off. Right now, I send the document to the printer (wich spawns a new process) and then call a FileSystemWatcher.WaitForChanged(WaitForChangedResult.Created) but when the object is created, it's still not done "printing" and the pdf printer still has a lock on it, throwing an error when I try to attach that file to an e-mail. I've considered a plain Thread.Sleep(2000) or whatever, but that's far less than ideal. I considered putting the attachment code in a try/catch block and looping on failure, but again, that's just bad news. I can't really think of an elegant solution.

  Say I have written to a text file in this format: key1/value1 key2/value2 akey/withavalue anotherkey/withanothervalue I have a linked list like: struct Node { char *key; char *value; struct Node *next; }; to hold the values. How would I read key1 and value1? I was thinking of putting line by line in a buffer and using strtok(buffer, '/'). Would that work? What other ways could work, maybe a bit faster or less prone to error? Please include a code sample if you can!

I've figured out a way to actually upload the file, but I'm not sure how reliable it us.   Our system would like our clients to link their accounts with different social media sites like youtube, vimeo, facebook, myspace and so on. One of the benefits we would like to give to the user is to transfer, update and delete files they have uploaded to our sites and transfer them to the social media sites mentioned above. this files could be videos, images or audio. We started thinking about using a strategy pattern, as all of these sites share a common process ( authentication, connection, use the API to transfer/edit/delete the file ), but we soon realized that it may not work as me may want to use some of the extended functionality that is specific to each service (eg: associate a youtube video with a channel, or upload images to a specific album on facebook, and much, much more...) My question is, what would be the best Structural Design Patter to use for this scenario?

• File Encoding handling in Eclipse 3.5

  Hi, I use Eclipse 3.5 on Windows, with PDT and Subclipse plugins, with both legacy projects using ISO-8859-1 encoding (latin-1), and newers ones wich use UTF-8. I configured my workspace to use UTF-8, and I configured old projects to use latin-1. But every time I open an old project, it use UTF-8. With a workspace using latin-1 by default, I have the same problem with utf-8 projects edited as iso-8859-1. My encoding choice is written in the file .settings/org.eclipse.core.resources.prefs but seems to be never read. The only solution for now is to have a latin1 workspace, and an utf8 one.   I am creating an RSS reader application that requests the RSS from my server. I mean, the RSS is first downloaded to my server, then application downloads it from my server. I want to create RSS cache for this. And for example, each RSS would be refreshed every 1 minute. So, If 10 users request RSS of example.com in 1 minute, my server will download it only for the first time, and in other 9 requests, RSS will be loaded from cache. My question is, Should I use a Database (MSSQL) for this purpose? or I should use files? I have no limit in Database size nor in file size... EDIT: I'm using ASP.NET for the server.

• Packing a file into an ELF executable

  Hello, I'm currently looking for a way to add data to an already compiled ELF executable, i.e. embedding a file into the executable without recompiling it. I could easily do that by using cat myexe mydata > myexe_with_mydata, but I couldn't access the data from the executable because I don't know the size of the original executable. Does anyone have an idea of how I could implement this ? I thought of adding a section to the executable or using a special marker (0xBADBEEFC0FFEE for example) to detect the beginning of the data in the executable, but I do not know if there is a more beautiful way to do it.   i have this issue working but i would like to know if there is a better way of adding the file extension? what i am doing right now is: String filePath = chooser.getSelectedFile().getAbsoluteFile() + ".html"; im adding the extension hard coded. and then saving to it. just wondering if there is a more robust/logical manner this can be implemented? thank you for your time. EDIT: i ask this as i would like my app to be portable across platforms. so adding .html manually i may make this a windows only solution.

  So I'm writing an app that lets the user select a folder, it gets all the .aspx files in that folder, and lets the users check off which ones they want to add HTML ID's to. • Foreach File in a Folder in Flash?

  Hey, I have an image slideshow program working right now and it takes in a folder of a hard coded in number of images. I would like to change this so that it can take in a folder and will display all of them no matter the number. Is there a way to do this in flash? I'm thinking something like the foreach loop in perl or other scripting language. It is possible to store then number of images in a text file but I also don't know how to read that in flash either.   I need to create a simple application/script able to list the hierarchy of a folder containing subfolders and files (mostly PDF), so that a user can browse easily these files and maybe have a quick preview of them. The files are all on an internal file server, so the dynamic aspects should all be client-sided. My goal (and what my boss want) is to provide some sort of an HTML page listing, to have something like this. The only problem I have now is that I cannot install anything on computers, so I cannot use PHP, Python, ... This application will only runs on Windows in Internet Explorer. What are the different possibilities I have ? I don't know if I can do this but I was thinking of using HTML + Flex. Thanks for helping.
