  Hi! I need to build a fault tolerant, highly available key/value storage (no posix, only same functionaluty as S3) using cheap existing hardware. The storage should be able to handle several billions of items. The maximum size of items is around 1GB, most are only several KB. What's the best software/ filesystem for this task? I already had a brief look at mogilefs, mongodb (grid-fs) & glusterfs but I'm not really sure which is stable & fault tolerant enough. The simpler the setup and later expansion the better :). Corin

  Just would like some feedback on the best ftp program (not free). The requirements I'm looking for is: - secure ftp - for use on mac, linux, windows - backup utility with scheduler - for use on more than one computer (multi-license) I'm using wsftp from 2007 right now but it's only good for windows. It's license is only good for one computer. And after some vista updates it's making some strange noises. I tried to turn off the noise (via control panel) and it's still making that noise and I turned off the sound within wsftp too. I like the program but I think it's time to look for a new one. • Best way to backup Xbox 360 USB Drive

  What is the best way to backup/restore my USB drive that I use for my Xbox? I want to make sure that if the USB drive goes, that I can retrieve my saved games and such onto another USB drive. I was able to show the content of the drive, however, I wasn't sure if I could simply copy the content onto a Truecrypt volume and be able to restore it from there at a later date. The file system is not FAT or NTFS, wasn't sure about the impacts of copying from two different file systems... I currently have a DataTraveler G3 16GB. • Best linux distro for cuda development

  Can someone suggest the best linux distro for CUDA development. The reason why I'm asking is that I tried installing the latest cuda SDK in Fedora 12, and it was a real pain in the neck. It took me 8 hours to get the nouveau driver removed and the nvidia-driver installed. After that somehow the OS decides to act up and blow up the /var/log/message file to 9 GB and eat up all my remaining space, with strange errors. I don't even understand what happened further, but my Nvidia drives don't work anymore. Please don't flame me, I'm NOT a windows fanboy or anything. I've been using Linux since 2002, and actually like it. Its just my personal experience. Would be really helpful for positive suggestions. Fanboys, please stay aside. Thanks in advance.

  We regularly setup small networks for clients in different locations to allow them to work on different products now the question what should be the best security practice. Currently we have a wifi enabled with WPA2 and most laptops connect to this but some will connect to a cabled switch connecting to the router. We are thinking on what we should do to increase the security on our small networks - We do have have security on the laptops so you can share directly to the other persons drive by a simple Windows user account. Some suggestions are: We get a LAN switch with ACL control and mac filtering for the hard wired connections? We get acl working on the wifi via a good Cisco router? ipSec policies on all machines? IP filtering and fixed IPs? I suppose people are worried that anyone can plug into the switches and get the access to the network . Summary: Maintain a level of decent security that can be replicated easily to every setup that we do for clients

  What would be the best wireless mouse and keyboard for a conference room computer that is used by multiple employees throughout the day? We have one in there right now that is really cheap that doesn't work half the time. This is due to the fact that the batteries run down when left on... and it seems to have problems losing its pairing with the computer dongle. Any ideas on something that won't have battery problems, is very reliable and somewhat tough? Price isn't too much of an issue, but I'd still prefer to get something for less than $100 just in case someone walks away with it.

  We have a external HP LTO3 tape drive. It needs to backup 6 Windows 2003 machines every night. Servers are HP DL380 G3 and the tape drive is attached locally to one of them via SCSI. On a budget of $0, and a goal of keeping-it-simple, what is going to be the best way to backup these machines? What software to use? NT Backup? Or does HP have something better for free? We don't need image backups - file system + system state will be adequate. Do we need to copy the files to be backed up onto the machine with the tape drive attached? Edit: Let me ask a more focussed question: Would you use NT Backup or something else? No soap boxing please, we've after some quick advice from someone who's used a similar setup.

  I have two 1TB single-partition hard disks configured as RAID1, of which I would like to make an off-site backup on a third disk, which I am still to buy. The idea is to store the backup at a relative's house, considerably far away from my place, in the hope that all the information will be safe in the case of a global thermonuclear apocalypse. Of course, this backup would be well encrypted. What I still have to decide is whether I am going to simply tar the entire partition or, instead, use dd to create an image of the disks. Is there any non-trivial difference between these two approaches that I could be overlooking? This off-site backup would be updated no more than two or three times a year, in the best of the cases, so performance should not be a factor to be pondered at all. What, and why, would you use if you were me? dd, tar, or a third option?

  Hi, I need 2x 4GB RAM, a total of 8GB, in my upcoming Thinkpad X200s laptop. Before buying, I would like your advice on which modules to choose. I've been looking at Corsair's Value Select (P/N: CM3X4GSD1066) RAM, because in my experience they produce good RAM modules. However, Corsair lists 7 clock cycles for their modules while Lenovo lists 5 clock cycles. What do you think? Is Lenovo modules the best choice? • Best way to duplicate databases nightly?

  Hey all We just got two new servers, that are running Windows Server 2008. The intent is to make the machines pretty much identical, copying the content of the master to the slave on a nightly basis, so that if anything fails, the second copy can stand in immediately. It doesn't need to be up-to-the-minute mirroring, though I suppose that wouldn't hurt if performance is not affected. The two machines will, amongst other things, each be running an instance of SQL Server 2008. The aim is to duplicate the databases on the master down to the slave on a nightly basis. Unless I'm misunderstanding, the slave databases in mirrored databases require the primary to be present to work correctly; I'm hoping for some solution where we have a second machine that can be up and running with minimal downtime if the first one falls over. Am I misunderstanding mirroring? Is that the best way to do things, or should I use some other mechanism? If so, what?

But now it's gotten bloated, there's files in there that nobody know who put them there, it's hard to find information, ect ect. You probably know the problem.   Ever since I started using Amazon's S3 service I've been struggling to find a good solution for simple file management, without having to write my own app to browse my buckets, upload and delete files, etc. The best I've found so far to do this is S3Fox. But it's far from perfect, it has problems deleting files and folders. Comments on the Firefox plugin page indicate I'm not the only person with this problem and the developer does not respond to emails. I've looked around briefly, but couldn't find anything that looked any better than S3Fox. Please tell me there's a better way! Edit (07/26/2009): The Firefox S3Fox extension seems to be getting love from its developer again, the problems I was having before have gone away, and I'm using it on a regular basis now with no problems!

• Best way to install multiple versions of Apache, PHP and MySQL on a single FreeBSD host

  I want a test- and development-environment for web using Apache, PHP and MySQL. I need to be able to test a single web-application with multiple versions of PHP (5.2, 5.3, etc) and multiple versions of MySQL (5.0, 5.1, 5.5, etc). It shall be hosted on a FreeBSD server. My idea is to compile each version into a directory structure and running them on separate portnumbers. For example: opt/apache2.2-php5.2-mysql-5.0 (httpd on port 8801, mysql on port 8802) (directory contains each software, compiled and linked towards eachother) opt/apache2.2-php5.3-mysql-5.1 (httpd on port 8803, mysql on port 8804) (and so on) Any thoughts or suggestions of the best way to setup this type of environment?

  I have created a simple pastebin in Ruby on Rails and Python. I want to host it in an intranet and it will have like about 1000 users. I want to use one Apache server with a cluster of Mongrel servers. The server itself is a 2 GHz Intel Centrino with 2 GB RAM. What do you think is the best OS to host this? I thought about Damn Small Linux or a custom LFS system. Ubuntu servers come with loads of stuff I don't need. Maybe there are some better OSes? • Having many subdomains with SSL--best practices?

  I have a site that has many subdomains (one for each client). The content for each subdomain will be different, pulling different data, different layouts etc, so I don't think I can just alias one directory to many different sub domains. My question is, what's the best practice for doing this? Each subdomain will need SSL. My setup is Amazon EC2 (ubuntu) Wildcard SSL for my domain (*.mydomain.com) Apache 2 PHP (LAMP) Currently, I'm just creating a new entry into "/etc/hosts" and an appropriate spot in the web root (ie /var/www/abc.mydomain.com, /var/www/def.mydomain.com, etc). I've just discovered that I'll need a unique IP for each subdomain, and that's tricky with EC2 as they limit you to the number you can have (unless you jump through some hoops). Right now I have about 10 subdomains, which is manageable, but theoretically I could have thousands. Am I doing it the only way possible or is there a better way I should investigate?

I'd prefer drivers that are available in Debian, or other drivers that are open source, but will settle for proprietary drivers if they are well contained and clean.   I am interested in knowing the proper, yet security-conscious settings for a directory. Here's my scenario: I have a username for FTP access to my server called "user". For the purpose of the scenario, PHP runs as "nobody" on my server. I have a directory off the document root called "sample". The "sample" directory is chmod'd at 0755 (drwxr-xr-x) "Sample" is owned by "user" and the group is set to "user" The above is all very straight forward and standard. So I want to have a script be able to create (mkdir) and delete (rmdir) directories under "sample". Yet, I don't want to obviously overly expose my server by opening up the permissions (I could easily chmod sample to 0777 and make it world write-able). What is the best combination of permissions, owner settings and/or group settings to allow my script to create and delete directories under "sample" while retaining the ability for "user" to continue to FTP into the directory? So let's say instead of the default copy/paste one item at a time, I could have 5 different paragraphs that could all be pasted somewhere seperately. Hopefully this is not to confusing. Instead of bveing able to paste 1 item I would like to have a list of items that can be pasted or some similar functionality under windows. • Swapping 3Ware Raid Card - Best Procedure

  We have a server running an old firmware version and driver (just took this position) on the 3Ware 9650SE Raid Controller... We have been having issues with the server and seemed to have narrowed it down to the Raid Card... I will be replacing the Raid card with the same model of 3Ware 9650SE, however, the card ordered most likely will have newer firmware on it. I managed to backup all the data to a very large drive. My plan is to update the firmware/driver on the current setup (which is still booting) and verify that everything works.. Then throw in the new Raid Card, check the firmware version (not letting it post). And update to newest firmware if needed via Java management utility on the card? Is this the best route? Thanks!

  Hi, I'm currently setting up RHN Satellite, and all works well. I'm in the process of creating custom channels, since we have certain software which should be available for all nodes of satellite, e.g. puppet, facter, subversion, php (newer version than present in base). I've tried to find documentation on best practices on this. How should they be set up, how to handle different arch, how to handle noarch packages. How to sync updates to dependencies when updating a custom package in a custom channel (e.g. php is updated, how to fetch all updated dependencies). The channel management documentation from RHEL (http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Network_Satellite/5.3/Channel_Management_Guide/html/Channel_Management_Guide-Custom_Channel_and_Package_Management.html) doesn't provide me with enough information on how to solve any of theese issues. All tips, tricks and information regarding this would be great!

  My client utilizes Plesk (9.X) for Server Management. We're implementing a custom backup solution, which should include a complete restorable representation of the actual Plesk configuration (Emails, Domains, etc.). We have full access, since it is a dedicated server resembling these steps: Plesk offers some backups, but they do not include the actual content of the (sub-)domains. Browsing the docs and the internet, I haven't found much ideas on that problem. Our target is to have a disaster recovery scenario: Reinstall a clean OS (Ubuntu) from scratch. Install MySQL/PHP and dependencies (since this runs the app) Install a bare plesk Restore all domains + plesk configuration from an archive Continue operations ... Now steps 1, 2, 3 and 5 are trivial. But what are the best practices for step 4? A side questions: Are there any easy-to-use open source apps out there, to create and restore server-images (even on machines with an possible different hardware)? Thanks for your time and input.

• Best Configuration for Performance - ffmpeg streaming / mp4 /flv

  I have some mpeg video files and a web page. A visitor comes to that web page and according to the selected options, a php script calls ffmpeg and combines the different mpeg files and then converts it to a mp4 file. That mp4 file is then shown to the visitor using flowplayer. The MP4 creation takes some time and flowplayer takes some time to load the file. What do you think is the best way to accomplish this task ? Should i go for streaming server ? I need to reduce the time taken for conversion. Will converting to FLV be faster ?
