  Which one gives you more advantages: Microsoft or SUN/Oracle certification? If you don't mind, please relate your answer to your career (dev, sys-admin, dba), industry (finance, general consulting, business apps, software house), and location (where you live, does it influence your decision?) as well. One reason I asked this because I heard that having MCP (in C#, MCSAD or whatever the cert is called these days) could give you extra point from the employer perspective if they're a Microsoft Partner. I don't quite understand why and am also wondering if SUN/Oracle certificate holder have similar edge/benefit. I'm also interested to know if Certification plays role where you live. For example: certification could be a big negative sign in Silicon Valley, but might be helpful if you're in other US/Canada cities or outside USA/Canada. If you are an independent software consultant, do these certification helps you win bids? I totally understand that this question might be subjective and could be "closed". But it doesn't hurt to ask I suppose. I also understand that there are people who dislike/disagree (or have negative perspective on technology certification). While there are people who have the opinion that "these are not the kind of employers you would want to work with", I respect you guys, but sometime a pure software product company might not exist in certain cities in the world. And if certification can help one's career somewhere else, I guess that means more opportunities right? I've had experienced in both platforms: (short) .NET and (not too long) Java (minus Oracle DB stuff), but I think it's about time I have to pick one of them and be good at. Where I live right now might also dictates my career albeit insignificant. Anyhow, this last paragraph is just tiny blurb. Thanks!

• how do I use an enum value on a switch statement in C++

  I would like to use an enum value for my switch statment in C++. Is it possible to use the enum values enclosed in the "{}" as choices for the "switch()"? I know that switch() needs an integer value in order to direct the flow of programming to the appropriate case number. If this is the case, do I just make a variable for each constant in the 'enum' statment? • jquery - DOM traversal question

  Hi, Basically what I have here is a button that adds a new list item to an unordered list. Within this list item is a dropdown box (.formSelector) that when changed triggers an ajax call to get the values for another dropdown box (.fieldSelector) in the same list item. The problem is on this line: $(this).closest(".fieldSelector").append( If I change it to $(".fieldSelector").append( the second box updates correctly. The problem with this is that when I have multiple list items it updates every dropdown box on the page with the class fieldSelector, which is undesirable. How can I traverse the DOM to just pick the fieldSelector in the current list item? Any help is greatly appreciated. • Is there a way to make sure classes implementing an Interface implement static methods?

  Frist of all, I read erickson's usefull reply to "Why can’t I define a static method in a Java interface?". This question is not about the "why" but about the "how then?". So basically I want one Interface to provide both usual methods and e.g. a getSimilarObject method. Obviously one could provide a loader class containing an array of the available ParametricFunction's, but every time a new one is implemented one has to remember adding it there, too.

• What is the best way to implement a callback scenario using WCF and ASP.NET MVC?

  I am new to WCF. I just finished reading Learning WCF and I think I've got a pretty good grasp of the fundamentals. I am adding functionality to a line of business app that runs on ASP.NET MVC entirely inside the corporate LAN. I am calling into a service that will also send me events as they occur (and not as responses to service calls). These events can occur at any point during the user's session. I have the service written, and it is able to pick up these events. What would be the best way to deliver these events to the user? My initial thought is to run the WCF service in duplex mode over net TCP and implement the events as callbacks. Using this scenario, the best way I can think up to deliver the events to the user is a dictionary object stored in the session. The dictionary would be populated by the callbacks and polled on a set frequency for delivery via AJAX calls. Has anyone dealt with this scenario? Is there a more efficient way to implement this?

  So I'm working with authlogic, and I'm trying to duplicate the login functionality to the welcome page, so that you can log in by restful url or by just going to the main page. No, I don't know if we'll keep that feature, but I want to test it out anyway. Here's the error message: RuntimeError in Welcome#index Called id for nil, which would mistakenly be 4 -- if you really wanted the id of nil, use object_id The code is below. Basically, what's happening is the index view (the first code snippet) is sending the information from the form to the create method of user_sessions controller. At this point, in theory, it create should just pick up, but it doesn't. PLEASE help. Please. I've been doing this for about 8 hours. I checked Google. I checked IRC. I checked every book I could find. • Memory not being returned after function python call

  I've got a function which does a parse of a sentence by building up a big chart. For some reason, Python holds on to whatever memory was allocated during that function call. • visual studio attaching to a process in debug mode

  i have a strange problem. the dll that i built (lets call it my.dll) in c++ visual studio 2010 uses a third party library (say tp.lib) which in turn calls a third party dll (say tp.dll). for debugging prupose i have in configurationProperties-debugging-command: Excel.exe and configurationProperties-debugging-commandArguments: "$(TargetPath)" in my computer i also set PATH variable to the directory where tp.dll resides now when i hit the F5 in visual studio excel opens up with my.dll and crashes giving me a "cannot open in dos mode" error. the reason this happens is tp.dll is not deployed when debug version of my.dll is deployed. when i open an instance of excel seperately and manually drop the debug version of my.dll then everything works fine and i can see all my functions that i wrote in my.dll the only issue is now i do not know how to debug becuase i do not know how to attach visual studio to the instance of excel i opened up seperately. my question is: 1 how can i attach visual studio to an already opened instance of Excel or 2 how can i hit F5 and still make Excel pick up the required tp.dll from the directory specified in the PATH variable before it starts to deploy my.dll. any of these two will allow my to step through the code for the purpose of debugging. thanks in advance.

• javascript/html/php: Is it possible to insert a value into a form with Ajax?

  I have a form where users enter some text manually. Then I'd like to let the users choose a tag from a database through AJAX, not unlike how tag suggestions appear in the SO question form. While the div where the ajax call places the tag is inside the form, it does not seem to register and the tag is not picked up by the form. Am I missing something in my code, is this impossible or, if impossible there a better way to do this? Thanks for any suggestions. • fastest public web app framework for quick DB apps?

  I'd like to pick up a new tech for my toolbox - something for rapid prototyping of web apps. Brief requirements: public access (not hosted on my machine) - like Google's appengine, etc no tricky configuration necessary to build a simple web app host DB access (small storage provided) including some kind of SQLish query language easy front end HTML templating ability to access as a JSON service C# or Java,PHP or Python - or a fun new language to learn is OK free! An example app, very simple: render an AJAXy editable (add/delete/edit/drag) list of rich-data list items via some template language, so I can quickly mock up a UI for a client. ie. I can do most of the work client-side, but need convenient back end to handle the permanent storage. (In fact I suppose it doesn't even need HTML templating if I can directly access a DB via AJAX calls.) I realize this is a bit vague but am wondering if anyone has recommendations. A Rails host might be best for this (but probably not free) or maybe App Engine, or some other choice I'm not aware of? I've been doing everything with heavyweight servers (ASP.NET etc) for so long that I'm just not up on the latest... Thanks - I'll follow up on comments if this isn't clear enough :)

• How important is it that models be consistent across project components?

  I have a project with two components, a server-side component and a client-side component. For various reasons, the client-side device doesn't carry a fully copy of the database around. How important is it that my models have a 1:1 correlation between the two sides? And, to extend the question to my bigger concern, are there any time-bombs I'm going to run into down the line if they don't? I'm not talking about having different information on each side, but rather the way the information is encapsulated will vary. (Obviously, storage mechanisms will also vary) The server side will store each user, each review, each 'item' with seperate tables, and create links between them to gather data as necessary. The client side shouldn't have a complete user database, however, so rather than link against the user for gathering things like 'name', I'd store that on the review. In other words... --- Server Side --- Item: +id //Store stuff about the item User: +id +Name -Password Review: +id +itemId +rating +text +userId --- Device Side --- Item: +id +AverageRating Review: +id +rating +text +userId +name User: +id +Name //Stuff The basic idea is that certain 'critical' information gets moved one level 'up'. A user gets the list of 'items' relevant to their query, with certain review-orientation moved up (i. e. average rating). If they want more info, they query the detail view for the item, and the actual reviews get queried and added to the dataset (and displayed). If they query the actual review, the review gets queried and they pick up some additional user info along the way (maybe; I'm not sure if the user would have any use for any of the additional user information). My basic concern is that I don't wan't to glut the user's bandwidth or local storage with a huge variety of information that they just don't need, even if proper database normalizations suggests that information REALLY should be stored at a 'lower' level. I've phrased this as a fairly low-level conceptual issue because that's the level I'm trying to think / worry over, but if it matters I'm creating a PHP / MySQL server that provides data for a iOS / CoreData client.

• Dynamic Data Extract Tools

  I've been searching around for a few weeks now for a tool that either is fully built or a direction of something I could build for dynamically extracting data via a web interface. Basically, what I'm looking for is a way to give users a list of all available data objects from our database and then let them pick ones from the list they'd like to view and set parameters then export the results to an excel file. Right now we're doing it purely with SQL statements but we have hundreds of objects so as you might imagine, those statements are really complex and prone to errors. It would be great if there was a tool available to do this or if someone had an idea of an easy way to organize this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We've looked at BI tools like QlikView and Tableau but that is probably overkill for what we're trying to do. The open-source BI tools we've looked at seemed really primitive in their functionality. The other thing we looked at was MSAS (our DB is SQL Server) but I'd prefer something that was more database-agnostic and lived on a web server instead of on the database.

• Rails HTML Table update fields in mongo with AJAX

  I'm building a Rails app backed by mongodb using mongoid. It's a one page app, with a HTML table, every field for every row of which, needs to be editable without refreshing the page. This is your usual Rails view ( like many in rails casts ) showing a table with rows and columns containing data. For example. I'm showing cars, and showing their make, model and notes They way I'm doing this is by appending _id of a mongo document to every column and marking it's field name in html id too. Then I pick up the value for $("#id") and send it to rails controller via AJAX and run @car.update_attributes method accordingly.   There are a few hundred of book records in the database and each record has a publish time. In the homepage of the website, I am required to write some codes to randomly pick 10 books and put them there. The requirement is that newer books need to have higher chances of getting displayed. Since the time is an integer, I am thinking like this to calculate the probability for each book: Probability of a book to be drawn = (current time - publish time of the book) / ((current time - publish time of the book1) + (current time - publish time of the book1) + ... (current time - publish time of the bookn)) After a book is drawn, the next round of the loop will minus the (current time - publish time of the book) from the denominator and recalculate the probability for each of the remaining books, the loop continues until 10 books have been drawn. Is this algorithm a correct one? By the way, the website is written in PHP. Feel free to suggest some PHP codes if you have a better algorithm in your mind. Many thanks to you all.

And then when it gets submitted it fails cause it doesnt match the mapname in question. the results look like this " 320-197" So what is causing this? if i run the jsp page alone also get normal results for example 372-146, 376-146, 372-149, 368-149, 376-149, 380-149, 380-152, 376-152, 372-152, 368-152, 368-155, 376-155, 372-155, 380-155, 368-158, 380-158, 376-158, 372-158 thanks in advance

• Assigning a 2D array (of pointers) to a variable in an object for access in C++?

  I'm sorry if I didn't pick a descriptive or concise name. A lot of questions sound similar, but I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. What I want to do is store a 2D array of pointers somewhere and assign a variable in some object to that array to be able to access it. Here's some example code that has the same compile error I'm getting with a bigger project. #include <iostream> using namespace std; struct X{ float * b[8][8]; X(){ *(b[1][5]) = 1; cout << *(b[1][5]) << endl; } void Set(float * c[8][8]){ b = c; cout << *(b[1][5]) << endl; } }; main(){ float * a[8][8]; *(a[1][5]) = 2; X obj; obj.Set(a); } What I want to happen in this code is that an X object starts with its own 2D array, whose value pointed to by b[1][5] should be printed as "1". Then the main method's 2D array, a, is passed to the object's Set() method and assigned to its array variable. The value pointed to by b[1][5] should then be printed as "2". However, I can't figure out what type the Set() parameter, c, should be. I get error: incompatible types in assignment of ‘float* (*)[8]’ to ‘float* [8][8]’ when I try to compile. As for why I want to do this, I'm trying to use an array of pointers to objects, not floats, but it's the same error.

• Check if previous clicked value is inside an array

  I have a list with different categories. All the list item are clickable. I want the user to pick between 1 and 3 items. They can toggle their choice, but maximum is alway 3. So far, so good. Where it get tricky for me, is that I have some special categories that can't be combined with any others. When a user click on one of these, all the other categories deselect and they can't add any other, (these item have only 1 category selection possible) Exemple: Let's say "Car" is a special category. If they click on Car, everything else deselect, Car is selected, and they can't select anything else. BUT they can click again on Car to deselect it, and from there the logic start over. What's missing in my code is the part in bold just above this. • counter_cache not updating on the model after save

  I am using a counter_cache to let MySQL do some of the bookkeeping for me: class Container has_many :items end class Item belongs_to :container, :counter_cache => true end Now, if I do this: container = Container.find(57) item = Item.new item.container = container item.save in the SQL log there will be an INSERT followed by something like: UPDATE `containers` SET `items_count` = COALESCE(`items_count`, 0) + 1 WHERE `containers`.`id` = 57 which is what I expected it to do. However, the container[:items_count] will be stale! ...unless I container.reload to pick up the updated value. Which in my mind sort of defeats part of the purpose of using the :counter_cache in favor of a custom built one, especially since I may not actually want a reload before I try to access the items_count attribute. (My models are pretty code-heavy because of the nature of the domain logic, so I sometimes have to save and create multiple things in one controller call.) I understand I can tinker with callbacks myself but this seems to me a fairly basic expectation of the simple feature. Again, if I have to write additional code to make it fully work, it might as well be easier to implement a custom counter. What am I doing/assuming wrong?

• A good php framework in 2012

  I've done a lot of googling around this, and practically all of the answers I find are pre 2011, and are answered in the usual, here are the 5 most popular frameworks... So I'd like to update this topic for 2012, I'm going to build a web application with a pretty complex back-end system driving it, and I'd like to use a framework so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. My application will be hugely user based, so I would appreciate a built in authentication/validation system. (When this is missing it takes me a good 2 weeks of intense and frivolous research to try to pick the "best" one (I don't want to roll my own, I don't think I'd do a better job than what's out there). I've looked into a tried a few, so I'll give you what I like and don't like, but I don't want to bias answers too much. I don't like: Frameworks that auto-generate bloated code. If they have the feature, fine, but if I have to use it, I get frustrated. Backwards compatibility with php4, eww. I don't need backwards compatibility at all. I like: Getting up and running quickly (but without all the auto-generation bogus), what I mean by this is that all the essentials are there, so I don't have to come to a grinding halt to research what the best 3rd party plugin is to get the feature I need. Thorough documentation, good tutorials. Good presentation of these materials. Please explain why your framework suggestion is good, don't just give the name of a framework without any justification. • Credit card validation with regexp using test()

  I'm trying to complete some homework and it appears the book might have gotten it wrong. I have a simple html page that allows user to pick a credit card in our case american express. The user then enters a number and evalutes that number based on a regular expression. My question ends up being when test() evaluates the number it returns a boolean or a string? I should then compare that string or boolean? True == true should fire off the code in a nested if statement.   I'm writing a library that uses reflection to find and call methods dynamically. Given just an object, a method name, and a parameter list, I need to call the given method as though the method call were explicitly written in the code. I've been using the following approach, which works in most cases: static void callMethod(Object receiver, String methodName, Object[] params) { Class<?>[] paramTypes = new Class<?>[params.length]; for (int i = 0; i < param.length; i++) { paramTypes[i] = params[i].getClass(); } receiver.getClass().getMethod(methodName, paramTypes).invoke(receiver, params); } However, when one of the parameters is a subclass of one of the supported types for the method, the reflection API throws a NoSuchMethodException. For example, if the receiver's class has testMethod(Foo) defined, the following fails: receiver.getClass().getMethod("testMethod", FooSubclass.class).invoke(receiver, new FooSubclass()); even though this works: receiver.testMethod(new FooSubclass()); How do I resolve this? If the method call is hard-coded there's no issue - the compiler just uses the overloading algorithm to pick the best applicable method to use. • Pure Server-Side Filtering with RadGridView and WCF RIA Services

  Those of you who are familiar with WCF RIA Services know that the DomainDataSource control provides a FilterDescriptors collection that enables you to filter data returned by the query on the server. We have been using this DomainDataSource feature in our RIA Services with DomainDataSource online example for almost an year now. In the example, we are listening for RadGridViews Filtering event in order to intercept any filtering that is performed on the client and translate it to something that the DomainDataSource will understand, in this case a System.Windows.Data.FilterDescriptor being added or removed from its FilterDescriptors collection. Think of RadGridView.FilterDescriptors as client-side filtering and of DomainDataSource.FilterDescriptors as server-side filtering. We no longer need the client-side one. With the introduction of the Custom Filtering Controls feature many new possibilities have opened. With these custom controls we no longer need to do any filtering on the client. I have prepared a very small project that demonstrates how to filter solely on the server by using a custom filtering control. As I have already mentioned filtering on the server is done through the FilterDescriptors collection of the DomainDataSource control. This collection holds instances of type System.Windows.Data.FilterDescriptor. The FilterDescriptor has three important properties: PropertyPath: Specifies the name of the property that we want to filter on (the left operand). Operator: Specifies the type of comparison to use when filtering. An instance of FilterOperator Enumeration. Value: The value to compare with (the right operand). An instance of the Parameter Class. By adding filters, you can specify that only entities which meet the condition in the filter are loaded from the domain context. In case you are not familiar with these concepts you might find Brad Abrams blog interesting. Now, our requirements are to create some kind of UI that will manipulate the DomainDataSource.FilterDescriptors collection. When it comes to collections, my first choice of course would be RadGridView. If you are not familiar with the Custom Filtering Controls concept I would strongly recommend getting acquainted with my step-by-step tutorial Custom Filtering with RadGridView for Silverlight and checking the online example out. I have created a simple custom filtering control that contains a RadGridView and several buttons. This control is aware of the DomainDataSource instance, since it is operating on its FilterDescriptors collection. In fact, the RadGridView that is inside it is bound to this collection. In order to display filters that are relevant for the current column only, I have applied a filter to the grid. This filter is a Telerik.Windows.Data.FilterDescriptor and is used to filter the little grid inside the custom control. It should not be confused with the DomainDataSource.FilterDescriptors collection that RadGridView is actually bound to. These are the RIA filters. Additionally, I have added several other features. For example, if you have specified a DataFormatString on your original column, the Value column inside the custom control will pick it up and format the filter values accordingly. Also, I have transferred the data type of the column that you are filtering to the Value column of the custom control. This will help the little RadGridView determine what kind of editor to show up when you begin edit, for example a date picker for DateTime columns. Finally, I have added four buttons two of them can be used to add or remove filters and the other two will communicate the changes you have made to the server. While this is just a basic implementation, the source code is absolutely yours and you can take it from here and extend it to match your specific business requirements.
