• How to get default Ctrl+Tab functionality in WinForms MDI app when hosting WPF UserControls

  I have a WinForms based app with traditional MDI implementation within it except that I'm hosting WPF based UserControls via the ElementHost control as the main content for each of my MDI children. This is the solution recommended by Microsoft for achieving MDI with WPF although there are various side effects unfortunately. One of which is that my Ctrl+Tab functionality for tab switching between each MDI child is gone because the tab key seems to be swallowed up by the WPF controls. Is there a simple solution to this that will let the Ctrl+tab key sequences reach my WinForms MDI parent so that I can get the built-in tab switching functionality?

  I'm trying to get a visitor's location based on their IP, pretty common stuff. My research so far shows that there's a database from MaxMind that costs $370 + $90/month... not the type of cost I can afford. Then there's a free version called GeoLite City. Anyone used these before? Drop a quick line here please. Why is one free and the answer so expensive. Is the free one usable, is it not as accurate, what's the catch? P.S. Any other suggestions are welcome.

• How to handle application upgrades from free to paid version while preserving any data

  Here is the context. I want to have a free version and a premium version of the same application. When people buy the application, I want them to be able to "upgrade" without losing their data, i.e. the premium version should install over the free version. I want to use the same code base and just switch a setting to build the premium version. Andoid Market does not let me convert a free app to a paid app, so the trivial option is not available. I am curious if someone has tried this successfully. How does Android Market identify an application - will it think that the premium version is a different app and just install it in parallel?

  I'm sure many here are aware of image hosting sites, like imgur, min.us, photobucket etc. Not that I want to develop one, but besides just uploading the file, organising it in some directory somewhere, what architectural considerations are involved in these sites? Especially when there's millions of page views a day (like imgur, I'd imagine) I'm curious about this because it seems that a lot of sites (say, dating websites etc) would be pretty image intensive. Even if it's not for millions of page views, what are some basic architectural requirements of efficient image deliveries online?

• Using malloc/free in Objective-C object

  I have a class AudioManager with a member of type AudioBufferList *. (This is a struct declared in the CoreAudio framework). Since AudioBufferList is not a NSObject, I cannot retain it, so I have to alloc/free it (correct me if I'm wrong). My question is, where is the 'right' place to free it? Currently I am doing it in the dealloc method of AudioManager. If I understand correctly, this method is invoked automatically once the release message is sent to the instance of AudioManager --- is that true? Is there any other recommended practice regarding using alloc/free on non-objects members of Objective-C objects? Edit: From Apples documentation: Subclasses must implement their own versions of dealloc to allow the release of any additional memory consumed by the object—such as dynamically allocated storage for data or object instance variables owned by the deallocated object. After performing the class-specific deallocation, the subclass method should incorporate superclass versions of dealloc through a message to super: Which makes things a little bit clearer - but more insights are appreciated.

  Can anyone tell me, is there a way to run a process in IIS shared hosting service. Suppose, the scenario is like "I want to send emails to a list of email id's after everywhere 3 hrs", so the challenge here is the process should not be invoked by a HTTP link. • Does NInject work in medium trust hosting?

  I'm doing shared hosting with GoDaddy and I developed a sample ASP.NET MVC app using Castle Windsor and unfortunately, it didn't work in a medium trust setting. Specifically, I got this error: "[SecurityException: That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers"... etc. GoDaddy is sadly not flexible in their trust policy. I'm not tied to Windsor and would like to try another one that will work under Medium Trust. I'd actually like to use NInject, but I've read people having mixed success. The only one I've read that works with no problem is Microsoft's Unity. My question is, does NInject work in medium trust? If not, what are my options?

This application is currently available on app store as paid application, I want to update this paid application to free application with this In App purchase feature, where users can download it freely and have to pay for few features to unlock them. But the problem is that, if I update the existing paid application as free application (with few features locked and user has to buy it to unlock it), what about the users who have already purchased this application. Because when they will update to new free application, few features will be locked and they have to pay again to unlock them (why should they pay, if they have already purchased whole application previously). As per my understanding, the memory in the heap that was being pointed to by x, and is still being pointed by y, hasn't been allocated to someone else, so how can it change to 0? And moreover, I don't think it is free(x) that changed it to 0.   Hey, I've been trying to be able to read and write iTunes style M4A atoms and while I've successfully done the reading part, I've come to a bit of a halt in regards to the free space atoms. I figured that I should be able edit and shift the padding around to accommodate writing an atom with more data than it originally had. I've been stuck on this for about a day now, and I've been trying to figure out how to determine the closest free space atom with enough size to accommodate the new data. so far I have: private freeAtom acquireFreeSpaceAtom( long position ) { long atomStart = Long.MAX_VALUE; freeAtom atom = null; for( freeAtom a : freeSpace ) { if( Math.abs( position - atomStart ) > Math.abs( position - a.getAtomStart() ) ) atomStart = ( atom = a ).getAtomStart(); } return atom; } That code only takes into account the closest free space atom and completely disregards the fact that it should be greater than or equal to a certain size, but I can't quite figure out how I should check for both closeness and size efficiently.

  Hi, I'm hosting my project using IIS, running from Visual Studio. Whenever I recompile, on the first run it takes several minutes (on a not awful machine) to load all the symbols. Please see http://joshz.com/so/symbols.html for a list of the symbols that are loaded. At the bottom there is a ThreadAbortException, I'm not sure if this is playing a role. Any advice would be greatly appreciated; it's slowing my day down enormously! As a note: the project has never run quickly since I joined the company and started working with it.

• Any open source hosting site for abandoned projects?

  I have some projects which I have ceased their development a long time ago but still get code access requests for. I'm currently providing zipped packages from my personal web site. I think zipped packages are far from being useful (e.g. can't read code right away, can't provide url's to individual source files, can't fork easily, lifetime is dependent on my own web page's). I want that archaic code to be present on the net regardless I keep my web page up or not. I saw the question "What's the best open source hosting site?". However, most sites request the project "to be active", Codeplex for instance. I didn't go through EULA's of all providers to see if they allow abandoned projects. Are there elephant's graveyards for old code without activity restrictions? Which one would you pick, why?

  Hi all, I'm using GoDaddy's Shared Linux hosting. Using php i am inserting or updating the mysql database with create date or modified date using the variables $datestring = "%Y:%m:%d %h:%i:%s"; $time = time(); $createdate= mdate($datestring, $time); In this $createdate will be the variable i use to insert or update the table. But its updating the wrong value. ITs not the server time or localtime. mostly its 30 mins delay with godaddy's server time. Pls help.

  I'm trying to set up Drupal multisite in a shared hosting environment. The main site's location looks like http://www.mysite.com/foo/bar/ and my goal is to create another site using the same database at http://www.mysite.com/foo/bar/drupal2. I've created a new folder in the sites directory called www.mysite.com.foo.bar.drupal2 and added the default.settings.php and settings.php files, configured correctly for the environment, and I've set up a symlink from the main site's root to the subdirectory, with this command: ln -s . drupal2 The problem is that when I go to http://www.mysite.com/foo/bar/drupal2, I just get the main site at http://www.mysite.com without triggering the installer. What do I need to change to get the multisite working?

• OpenVPN access server on Amazon VPC vs free version

  Maybe I'm missing the point, but I'd like to setup simple VPN access with software VPN to access my private network on Amazon VPC. I thought OpenVPN would be a great solution for this, and I thought it might make sense to put this on the NAT instance that comes with VPC so I don't have to spend money on another instance. Is there any advantage to running the following: http://www.openvpn.net/index.php?option=com_content&id=493 vs sticking to the free solution of OpenVPN? What does one offer over the other? Any reason not to run this on the NAT instance itself?

• Free Windows traffic monitor that can run a command when reaching a limit

  Does anyone know a free traffic monitor tool for Windows XP which can run a configurable program when reaching a limit? Hoo Net Meter and DU Meter can do that, but they both cost money. What I'm trying to do is throttle the connection when getting close to the monthly limit, so that watching YouTube or downloading large files isn't fun any longer, but e-mail or looking something up still work. The throttling part is settled, Traffic Shaper XP works nicely. I just need something to automatically call a batch script when reaching the limit.

• Light-weight, free, database query tool for Windows?

  My question is very similar to the one here except pertaining to a Windows tool. I am also referencing this table and what I found here with a Google search. However, I have no idea which tool would best meet my (very basic) purposes. I am currently using Excel with a basic ODBC connection string to query my database at work. However, Excel is pretty memory-heavy and a basic query tends to throw my computer into a 30 second stall-a-thon. Is there a free tool out there that is light-weight and can serve the same purpose when provided an ODBC connection and a SQL query? Also would prefer that it easily copies over to a spreadsheet as needed.

  Just would like some feedback on the best ftp program (not free). The requirements I'm looking for is: - secure ftp - for use on mac, linux, windows - backup utility with scheduler - for use on more than one computer (multi-license) I'm using wsftp from 2007 right now but it's only good for windows. It's license is only good for one computer. And after some vista updates it's making some strange noises. I tried to turn off the noise (via control panel) and it's still making that noise and I turned off the sound within wsftp too. I like the program but I think it's time to look for a new one.   I have seen some Backup Questions around. But they are not quite what I am looking for. I would like to have a back up of my entire hard drive (to an external drive). I would like it to be the kind that has a base backup then just backs up the changes since the last backup. I would like it to be able to have a fully restorable image of my hard drive (not just key files). Lastly I would like it to be free (or super cheap). (The above requirements are important, but I will have to drop them if they up the price as my boss will not pay for them.) I have a Solid State Hard Drive 250 GB backing up to a 1TB external hard drive using Windows XP.

• Monitor HTTP usage on network from Linux free

  I manage a small office network. I am looking to start monitoring/logging internet usage (website requests) for each user on a small network. All the windows clients are running through a switch to a BT router. I also have a linux (centos) machine which is connected as a client to the BT router as well. Is there any free software I can install on the linux box (or my own machine) to allow me to log and monitor websites requested by users kind of like browser history.
