• Rename a Network Printer win Win 7

  Seems this is a common question but the answers regularly miss the point. I have a server. Server has some printers connected. Server has all drivers for x32 & x64 OS PLUS ALL DEFAULTS set. Server also manages print queue. I have many workstations, all need to use the printers. All NEED to have drivers print queue and DEFAULTS propagated from server. Now.... When I add the printers on the workstations, I get: "ABC Printer on SERVER123" I need something less long - just "ABC Printer" So how? Tip: Please don't show me how to change the name of your locally installed printer. I know how to do this - I am particularly interested in shared printers that look like "ABC Printer on SERVER123" Tip: Installing the driver with a local port wont cut it because then I loose the server propagated defaults, the driver updates and I need to run around with driver disks/confuse trembling users with hard things like choosing drivers. I am happy for a hack if there is no official way to do this in the group policy.... I tried looking in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers on the workstation machines but those are only local printers :( I can see the network printer details on the workstations here: HKEY_USERS[Some GUID]\Printers\Connections But there is nothing obvious like a description string... Can anyone help with this?

• SQL Server on Linux

  For a particular project that is coming up, I am trying to expand my knowledge of Linux, so I am going to set up a Linux system at home. Rather than dual booting, I am thinking about putting SQL Server on a Windows Virtual Machine with Linux as the host at least until this project is over when I will probably switch back to Linux. So, I have a couple of different, but interrelated questions: How well does this work? This is only a test machine at home, so I can easily accept a fair bit of degradation, but if it is going to be a horrible reduction in performance I will dual boot instead. Is there a particular virtual machine manager I should look at to go this route? Since this is my personal machine, price is an issue but I am quite happy to pay a reasonable amount. And finally, given the choice of VMM, is there a particular Linux Distro I should be looking at? [This has been cross posted at Ask.SqlServerCentral.com . I think it may be appropriate at both sites. ]

• Options for synchronizing Palm Desktop calendars

  My wife and I each have Palm Centro phones and very full calendars. We've been using Palm products for years and are happy with them and are not looking to switch (and don't have the budget for it even if we wanted to). What is a viable way we can synchronize our calendars? Back when we had Palm Z22s we used AirSet. It worked great in synchronizing our desktop calendars. Unfortunately, their sync software does not support Palm Desktop v6 and there is nothing in the pipeline to support it. (The third party vendor is apparently not interested in updating for the newer Palm desktop.) I would love to be able to get back to having each other's appointments appear on the other's calendar. What can we do? Some limitations: A data plan is not an option (so this precludes over-the-air synchronization options) No Microsoft Outlook Edit: Syncing my Palm to my Palm Desktop is not the issue. Being able to sync, in some way, the Palm calendar databases of my wife's and my calendars is what's desired.

• Postfix not sending email after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04

  After upgrading a server from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04, postfix is no longer sending email through sendgrid.com. I followed this guide about 6 months ago and everything had been working perfectly until the upgrade. Now it doesn't seem to be authenticating with sendgrid. This is the error I get in my syslog when I try to send an email. • Parental Controls in Ubuntu - per user

  I would like to set up parental controls on Ubuntu for a friend of mine. I want it so that the child user has the controls set, but the parent user is not restricted. To be clear, they are sharing one computer, so a router based solution won't help. And I would like a set of step by step instructions to do this. Just one way of doing it. I'm an experienced Ubuntu user, happy at the command line. I've spent quite some time googling for this along the way. I hope that the GChildCare project will eventually make this easy, but it is not ready yet. In the meantime, the WebContentControl GUI provides a way of managing parental controls, but apply them to every user on the computer (easy WebContentContol install instructions and detailed instructions, discussion and related links on ubuntuforums). The ubuntuforums post has a FAQ that states that user-specific configuration is not possible with WebContentControl, and then provides 3 links he used to help him do it. But they are far from step by step instructions. There is this thread which is notes along the way and linking to this article about squid and dansguardian. And then to these two dansguardian articles which are somewhat in depth ... So does anyone know of an existing guide to how to set up parental controls on ubuntu with some users not affected? If no one has come up with an answer after a little bit, I'll set up a community wiki answer so we can come up with a guide.

• Why is windows 7 rejecting my key?

  I'm extremely confused. I have a genuine key and CD (I can take photos) and I am trying to install windows on my new tower. I believe this would be the 3rd PC i installed it (old, laptop now new tower). However i did change the HDD once but i doubt windows would think its a different computer bc of that. After going through phone activation it said i installed it on to many pcs..... i'm extremely confused. I'll be happy to deactivate it off my old tower if i knew how. I already grabbed all the files off of it. I tried to look up the amount of boxes i can install windows home premium on and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions What stuck out was this Maximum physical CPUs supported[40] 1 1 1 2 2 2 My new tower has 4cores (its the intel i7) but has two threads each so it sees 8. Does that have anything to do with this? But apparently ultimate supports '2'. I'm sure windows support more than 2 cpus so... what gives? Actually its physically one CPU so i guess the number of cores doesn't matter? Why is windows 7 rejecting my key?

  In need of shell scripts / bash commands to verify data integrity of local harddrives, usb-drives, etc, ... Like the famous www.heise.de/download/h2testw; or something that is at least common within repositories. (h2testw writes a specific datastring over and over onto the medium, then reads it again to verify if it was written correctly and displays write/read time/speed.) please no dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdx bs=1k && dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/null bs=1k since it won't verify if everything was written correctly. It is only a test if read/write is successful to the device. So far, I'm not too happy with badblocks -w -v /dev/sdx1 either, since it seems rather slow and I don't know what it exactly writes, and if it considers wear-leveling on flash media. There is also a program named F3 http://oss.digirati.com.br/f3/ that needs to be compiled. Designed after h2testw, the concept sounds interesting, i'd just rather have it as a ready to go bash script.

• BlazeDS first response is VERY SLOW

  Hi everyone, I have a very strange an annoying problem: I have an appliaction written in Flex 3, with BlazeDS 3.2 and Java in the backend. I'm actually using a portal (liferay) to display portlets that contain Flex movies. When I hit a refresh button on my page, all the Flex movies send a RemoteObject request to the server (using BlazeDS), which should go to java classes and invoke a method (standard BlazeDS usage I 'm guessing). I'm experiencing VERY slow response (14 minutes) on the first hit, while the following hits are much faster. I've enabled the BlazeDS logging (logging level="All") and I also have debug prints coming from my java classes. I also use the "showBusyCursor" attribute for the RemoteObject - so I can see indication of the request being sent from the flex movie. Here is what I see: I hit the refresh button Each movie invokes a RemoteObject request I see a busy sign - in all the movies I see nothing in the log - no BlazeDS prints and no Java prints Wait 14 minutes or so I see BlazeDS prints followed by Java prints I see data populating my flex movies. The really weird thing is that I have the same "application" installed in 4 different computers (on my laptop and in 3 other unix machines), 3 of these installations work well (good response times) and only 1 has the issue I'm describing. I've tried many things, but everything failed. I'd be really happy to get some advice on this. Thanks

• RAID 5 Install on Ubuntu Server 12.04 [closed]

  Environment: Ubuntu Server 12.04, installing from bootable flash drive Error: No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu. I'm trying to set up a personal file server with software RAID 5. I just got three hard drives for this, but haven't found any solid documentation. I'm unsure what the basic way to partition my hard drives is. Can someone upload a screenshot of their "partition disks" screen so that I can compare with mine (attached)? Should I set the bootable flag? Do I need a /home partition? A /boot partition? Should I "Use [my partition] as: Ext4 journaling file system"? Or make that field "physical volume for RAID"? I am an engineer, but I have only a cursory knowledge of all-things-linux. • Should I persist images on EBS or S3 ??

  Hi; I am migrating my Java,Tomcat, Mysql server to AWS EC2. I have already attached EBS volume for storing Mysql data. In my web application people may upload images. So I should persist them. There are 2 alternatives in my mind. 1- Save uploaded images to EBS volume. 2- Use S3 service. The followings are my notes, please be skeptic about them, as my expertise is not on servers, but software development. EBS plus: S3 storage is more expensive. (0.15 $/Gb 0.1$/Gb) S3 plus: Serving statics from EBS may influence my web server's performance negatively. Is this true? Does Serving images affect server performance notably? For S3 my server will not be responsible for serving statics. S3 plus: Serving statics from EBS may result I/O cost, probably it will be minor. EBS plus: People say EBS is faster. S3 plus: People say S3 is more safe for persistence. EBS plus: No need to learn API, it is straight forward to save the images to EBS volume. Namely I can not decide, will be happy if you guide. • How to restore broken Ethernet functionality on Mac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.11 (Tiger)

  I had a disk error that rendered my Mac unbootable. I repaired it with Tech Tool 4, but now networking does not work. Network Preferences reports that my Ethernet cable is unplugged. I know this is bogus because when I boot from an emergency partition, networking works correctly. Furthermore, wireless networking is also broken, which I tested with a known-good Wi-Fi dongle. Whenever I try to change Network Port Configurations by creating a New or Renaming an existing one, example: I get this message in the console: Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! Error - PortScanner - setDevice, device == nil! In sets of two as shown. When I try to invoke the Network Diagnostics app, it immediately crashes. My first thought is to reinstall Tiger with the Archive and Install method so I don't have to reinstall all my applications but I have lost my Tiger installer disk. My next thought is to buy Leopard for $107 on Amazon. If there is any way I can just repair my Tiger install I would be happy to save that money, though. This is not my main machine and I am loathe to put more money into it. How can I recover my network functionality? UPDATE: I found my Tiger install disk and tried an Archive and Install. It failed with an unhelpful error message along the lines of "Can't install, try again". I tried again but had the same error. My guess is, some corrupt or missing file in my User folder is preventing migration. I have a backup created with Super Duper that is a bit out of date but will startup the machine (with functional networking). I would love to just copy over the file(s) that got messed up but I don't even know where to look. What is the likely location of the System files that would cause the aforementioned symptoms?

• How to prevent getting infected by rogue security applications

  My computer never got infected with a virus before, because I'm using Web of Trust browser plugin, sandboxie and Avast Free antivirus. But today, it got infected with a rogue security application called antivirus.net. I have already removed it using MBAM, SAS, and Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool. And by the way, I was using MSE when my laptop got infected. Seems like the rogue application just killed off the MSE process. And I never even got a warning. I was using the wi-fi from our school, which I think is the cause since most of the computers in our laboratory has rogue applications on it. My question is, how do I prevent this from happening again? It took me about 6 hours to disinfect my computer and I don't want it to happen again. Please enlighten me if these rogue applications really just pop out of nowhere. Note I'm not dumb enough to agree with installing rogue security applications. It just came out of nowhere. I'm happy with MSE, well not after it let antivirus.net penetrate my computer. • Search inside of text files

  So here is the situation. I currently run a mail server for my small non-profit company. My mail server (Merak Mail Server) keeps logs in .log files and mail as .tmp files. Essentially these are just text files that are kept on the server. Problem is that when I put text into the "Containing text" field on Windows Explorer, it always misses the files and tells me no results returned. Then when I search the files one by one (painful at best), I find the files I need. Do I not understand the search feature well enough, or maybe I have it indexing wrong. I really don't care what I need to use to search the files, even a third-party app is fine with me, I just want to type an email address into a box and search all of my log files or email files and find out which one I am looking for. It can be Windows Search or something else, as long as I can find a way to get the job done I will be happy. Pay solutions are fine as well. Thanks everyone in advance.

• windows cant "see" camera

  So I bought a lil emerson camera and I am trying to get it to read the thing on windows 7. The instructions for the camer say when you first hook it up via usb AUTOPLAY will come up and your good to go. Well that worked for me the first time I hooked it up. However the 2nd time, it started trying to install drivers. Since then I can't get it to show up in windows explorer. I have tried disabling and uninstalling everything and trying to start from scratch but its useless, I'm stuck with having to pull the sd card everytime. I really dont like doing this as its a cheap camera, so if I can fix the communication between the devices via usb I would be really happy. As of right now the device installation shows a checked USB COMPOSITE DEVICE and 3 X'd GENERIC IMAGE DEVIC. Can someone please help me get this sorted. PS there are no drivers for this camera, not in the packaging, not available from emerson, and to be honest it shouldn't need any. The only function the camera has when hooked up via USB is charging and access to the DCIM. The charging still works, but the drive just won't load. Any suggestions?

• Programmatically add/delete users in Exchange

  I've got the following set up: ASP.Net site that allows my internal employees to add in new hire information (no secure data, just stuff like name/address/phone) and when they submit this it goes into a database (SQL). Every few minutes a service runs that checks the database and if there are new entries it will add them into Exchange. The issue is I'm not happy with the way the service is doing things, (It's not putting address, etc in it). As I don't have the source code this I'm thinking of recreating it. My issue though is finding a starting point even. I know I'll have to create the scripts through code where the data is retrieved from SQL : Joe Smith 123 Main Street Nowhere, USA 19999 And put that into a powershell cmdlet (not sure exactly the syntax but I can get that figured out unless someone already has it) where the user is created in the Active Directory as a normal user and the mailbox is created simultaneously. From there I just need to fill out fields in Active Directory with the person's address, etc. Finally a deletion routine for when we terminate someone, however I'm sure that it will simply be a cmdlet that is easily shelled out to much like the initial one is, once I can figure out how to start that... Anyone have some good reference points or have already done it and can share?

  Hi I am trying to send my cover letter and resume away but apparently it is too big to send through craigs list(my computer says the total size is 500kb) as it has a 600kb limit(so small should be at least a meg). Hi there. You recently tried to email Some job Email, an anonymous craigslist address. However, your message was too big to be sent through our system. Craigslist has a 600KB limit on the messages we'll send. Please reduce the size of your mail and try again. Thanks for using craigslist. So when I convert my word 2007(.docx) files to pdf they become huge. Like they got from 32kb to 320kb. So is there a way I can either get around craigslist limits or compress my pdfs a bit to make it happy. I don't want to send zips and stuff since the person who gets it might not even know what to do. I rather not send .docx since not sure if will have office 2007 or the compatibility view installed and I rather just send it as pdf(as some place require it anyways to be in pdfs). Thanks

• tail -f and then exit on matching string

  I am trying to configure a startup script which will startup tomcat, monitor the catalina.out for the string "Server startup", and then run another process. I have been trying various combinations of tail -f with grep and awk, but haven't got anything working yet. The main issue I am having seems to be with forcing the tail to die after grep or awk have matched the string. I have simplified to the following test case. test.sh is listed below: #!/bin/sh rm -f child.out ./child.sh > child.out & tail -f child.out | grep -q B child.sh is listed below: #!/bin/sh echo A sleep 20 echo B echo C sleep 40 echo D The behavior I am seeing is that grep exits after 20 seconds , however the tail will take a further 40 seconds to die. I understand why this is happening - tail will only notice that the pipe is gone when it writes to it which only happens when data gets appended to the file. This is compounded by the fact that tail is to be buffering the data and outputting the B and C characters as a single write (I confirmed this by strace). I have attempted to fix that with solutions I found elsewhere, such as using unbuffer command, but that didn't help. Anybody got any ideas for how to get this working how I expect it? Or ideas for waiting for successful Tomcat start (thinking about waiting for a TCP port to know it has started, but suspect that will become more complex that what I am trying to do now). I have managed to get it working with awk doing a "killall tail" on match, but I am not happy with that solution. Note I am trying to get this to work on RHEL4.

• Xp SP3 - Non-Functioning

  Ok Here is a crazy problem, I have a HP dv6000 Laptop that can no longer hold a charge, so I hooked it up to my TV, bought a wireless mouse and keyboard and configured xp to run with the lid closed, It has medium to heavy usage mainly just streaming from sites like Netfilx, Hulu, ABC, etc. And playing movies I ripped of dvd. It ran fine for a while but recently it has been having some weird problems: Problem one: I used to use firefox but now when run it I can type but as soon as I click something it just shuts down, completely, I can't even close it unless I use taskmanager to do it. So I went and got google chrome which is better but still hit or miss, but never completely shuts down, I just can't click anything or type anything, or sometimes I just can't type anything or vice versa. Also when I open a new tab, and try to move back to my old one, it automatically closes the old tab when I click on it. Problem two: When using the internet I can't use any other application or anything windows (ie. Windows explorer) until I force quit all browsers with taskmanger. The reason I can't run anything is because I can't click on it. Problem three: When I try to play a movie (with vlc) Once it starts playing I can't click on anything, but I can use hotkeys, and once it stops everything is fine again. Well I hope somebody knows whats going on because I have no clue, If you need clarification or more info on something I would be happy to provide it...

• Line-length-tolerant XML diff

  I've looked at the answers to this question, and unfortunately none of them has helped me so far. Not to beat about the bush, the second edition of C# in Depth is now in copy edit. I want to be able to see what the copy editor's done really easily, so I can reject or accept his changes. We're using a modified form of docbook, but I'm happy enough looking at the raw XML source. All fine so far - except that when the copy editor makes a change, that can change the line wrapping. So something that used to read: <para>Foo bar baz second line</para> now reads <para>Foo bar grontle baz second line</para> Now the real change here is the insertion of "grontle". I don't care that "baz" has moved from the first line to the second line... but all the diff tools I've seen do. I realise that one option would be to reformat the whole document (or possibly just whole paragraphs) into single lines... but that's then really hard to read, because diff tools don't wrap when they're displaying. I'm sure I can manage with the tools I've got, but if anyone knows of anything better, I'd be really glad to hear about it. I suspect my publishers would too :) (I've included the Windows tag here because I'd really need it to be available on Windows. I'd like to hear about any non-Windows software too, but only in case I could help to build it on Windows :)

• Name resolution not working with ipv6 on centos

  I just installed CentOs 6.3 on a server to be installed in a data center, but cannot get name resolution / curl to work. I know this is because of it trying to use ipv6, since ping google.com works, curl -4 google.com works, but not curl google.com. I removed the ipv6 adress from the interface and it does not change anything. This is very problematic since most system tools like yum fail at name resolution currently. Browsers like Firefox work because they might be using another tool for name resolution than the one use by curl. I managed to fix this on workstations by completely disabling ipv6 following tutorials like this one / hardcoding name resolution in /etc/hosts. But since I am here configuring a server which will be later installed in a remote data center, I would like not to mess up, understand what is going on and fix it properly. Besides, I will face the same issue with more servers to come so I would really appreciate your help in understanding this problem and how to solve it. I would be happy to provide more information if needed to help understand what is going on. The current network configuration is a small enterprise network, with a DNS server (let's call it A) configured once a long time ago. dig google.com and dig -4 google.com are both refused by the A DNS. But this is also true for my workstation on which curl is working (and yes they both use the same A DNS server). Indeed this faulty server and my workstation have multiple nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf, and the second one is working fine for both of them, so if I remove A from my resolv.conf everything works fine! • CentOS security for lazy admins

  I'm running CentOS 5.5 (basic LAMP with Parallels Power Panel and Plesk) and have thus far neglected security (because it's not my full-time job, there is always something more important on my todo-list). My server does not contain any secret data and also no lives depend on it - Basically what I want is to make sure it does not become part of a botnet, that is "good enough" security in my case. Anyway, I don't want to become a full-time paranoid admin (like constantly watching and patching everything because of some obscure problem), I also don't care about most security problems like DOS attacks or problems that only exist when using some arcane settings. I'm in search of a "happy medium", for example a list of known important problems in the default installation of CentOS 5.5 and/or a list of security problems that have actually been exploited - not the typical endless list of buffer overflows that "maybe" a problem in some special case. The problem that I have with the usually recommended approaches (joining mailing lists, etc.) is that the really important problems (something where an exploit exists, that is exploitable in a common setup and where the attacker can do something really useful - i.e. not a DOS) are completely and utterly swamped by millions of tiny security alerts that surely are important for high-security servers, but not for me. • Sharepoint Workflow "Failed on Start" only when powershell import script is called from task scheduler

  I created a simple PowerShell script that takes an XML file in a local directory on our sharepoint server and imports it into a specific SharePoint form library. (Content management enabled library if that makes any difference) This script works flawlessly if i run it from the PowerShell command line manually. I call it like such: ".\script_name.ps1". It completes without error and the item is imported into the form library successfully. The workflow begins on the item and everything is happy dandy. However, i run into issues when i setup a scheduled task using Windows Server 2008 R2's task manager. The task runs the script without error and it does actually import the XML into the form library. I looks perfectly normal just as if i had run the script manually. However, after about 10 or 20 minutes the workflow status for that item changes from "In progress" to "Failed on Start (Retrying)". The scheduled task in question is a basic task and has only one action. (Start a program) The "program/script" box is set to "C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe" and the "Add arguments" box is set to the path of the actual ps1 script. (C:\scripts\sharepoint_import.ps1) I've tried running the task as various users. I've also tried with and without the "Run with highest privileges" check box. Nothing seems to work. For reference, here is the script i am using to import items into the form library.

• Repository bugzilla package changed to bugzilla3 in Lenny; upgradable?

  This question was asked in debianhelp.org almost half a year ago, but never got an answer. I wasn't the one who posted it, however I was today facing exactly the same question. Not sure if copying it to here as such is considered as inappropriate or something, but there's not really anything that I would even like to paraphrase... So let's just go. (I'm sure you will be happy to close it, if this is not the way to go :) Hello all! We are using a Bugzilla server install on a Debian 4/Etch server and are starting to look at the upgrade to Debian 5/Lenny. I was hoping to upgrade the existing Bugzilla server and database from the oldstable (v2.22) to the newer stable in Lenny (v3) when we get to doing a dist-upgrade. However from testing in a virtual machine it seems that the old package was called "Bugzilla" whereas the Lenny package is called "Bugzilla3" and I could not figure a way to directly upgrade between the two. Is it possible to establish some kind of upgrade path quickly after the dist-upgrade to minimise downtime using apt-get or aptitude? Going on past experiences I would not want to do a fresh install with the Bugzilla3 package and attempt to inject the old database into it (previous attempts failed miserably!) :(

• Is there a way to tag MP3 the way you can do with Photos in Live Photo Gallery or Picazza?

  I really do love the way you can tag pictures in Windows Live Photo Gallery. I find it incredibly useful to be able to tag the same picture with the tag "Cancun" and have it been automatically included when I look for the tag "Beach", "Trips" and "Fun Pic", since its a child tag of the former and also has a tag for the later. I also like that I can look for rating in the pics. On the other side, tagging MP3 has always been a pain in the ass, because I just find it to hard to classify music! Is it pop? techno? techno-pop? rock? indie-rock? indie-post-classic-pop-techno? I hate how ID3 just have one tag for genre, so I've tried tricks like putting all the genres I think it fits into, and then having lists in Winamp (which I dont use anymore) that filter out words in the ID3 tags (ie, Tag: Genre, Contains: Rock = rock list). But then, what about moods? I want to be able to tag my songs in genres and in moods, you know, happy, concentrate/work, party, romantic (wink wink), etc. Is there any way to do this, preferably in a way in which tags could carry on to other music players? Thanks
