• Web service access fails when users password is in warning period

  We have a number of locally installed .Net apps that communicate via web services. Authentication in IIS is handled by Windows Authentication so no additional login is required. We recently began seeing a problem where users are getting a application 403 error when there password is 14 days (or less) from expiring. As this sometime happens in the the middle of the day (login in the morning OK, but password reaches <14 days during the day), this comes as a surprise as they haven't been warned to change their password. Of course, one would expect they should be able to work until the password is expired. Any idea on what could be happening here? Why would IIS reject a login if the passsword hasn't actually expired? I am currently using Free SMTP Server http://www.softstack.com/freesmtp.html This software works great other than the fact that it can only send 10 messages a day. This is a bit of a problem seeing that the software I am writing needs to send a message every half hour. Anyone knows of a good piece of software that does the same thing, but does not limit the amount of messages that can be sent in a day? • Screen rotation hot key (CTRL+ALT+UP) not responding, what's going on?

  The other day my son (11 months) discovered a new hot key combination on my laptop. As I'm sure many of you are aware (I wasn't until the other day), on machines with Intel Graphics, pressing CTRL+ALT+{any arrow key} rotates the screen. After I recovered from my shock, and did a little sideways Googling to figure out how to fix it, I decided this might actually be useful. I read a lot of online documentation, and it fits better on the screen when it's rotated. Since it's a laptop, I hold the machine like a book and read it. It worked great all afternoon yesterday. But today at work I tried to show a friend this new trick, using the same laptop, and found that the CTRL+ALT+UP no longer works. I can rotate it to any orientation but the normal one. I'm guessing something else is intercepting this hot key, but what could be doing this?

• "Punch card" application

  Our main-con manager is looking for a "punch card" type of attendance-logging application. We need to take attendance every day, and the most "automatic" method is simply to track when people unlock their Windows desktop screen (not logon, because many simply leave the computer on indefinitely), and report to a remote location/repository, where the administrator will be able to observe which users unlocked their screens each day. Has anybody come across such an application suite? It likely has to be a Windows service so that it operates regardless of who is logged into the system.

• Sudden slow read & write speed on all IO

  I have a custom built rig that has 2 storage drives. for OS: Western Digital 1.0TB HARD DR 64MB for other stuff: Corsair Performance 3 128GB (SSD) [ expected read speed: 400 mb/s ] The system was incredibly fast for a couple of months, then one day i was playing a game then it started to get buggy (some sounds and objects disappearing), i stopped the game and the system seemed to be unstable so i had to shut it down, next morning i couldn't start it up, it was saying something about corrupt device. I formatted both disks and installed a fresh copy of windows, all i can say that since that day the system was never like before, it takes 10 minutes to boot up (the icons and desktop slowly appear). but once it's done the slowness isn't as noticeable. Here's my benchmark on the HDD ( read speed - write speed ): And the SSD: Anyone knows what could be the issue?

• How do you pick what server setup you need?

  I recently started receiving pubsub data feed from etsy. It averages around 250 notifications per minute. But obviously, when the USA wakes up that spikes quite heavily. I want to be able to deal with those spikes (about 3 per day) but the rest of day is fine. What's the best method of getting the right server configuration. • Configuring memcached for a particular scenario

  I have a web application which queries opentsdb server(which in backend using Hbase cluster) for the datapoints of different metrics and using dygraph javascript graphing library, I am plotting those metrics. Since getting all the datapoints of past one day from opentsdb for a particular metric is itself taking nearly 2 seconds, my application which is plotting nearly 25 metrics is becoming very slow. In order to reduce this latency, I am thinking of using memcached module of php5 for caching all the queries. But I have few questions regarding memcached. Is there any way I can configure memcache to keep on updating its cache in the background by running some command line queries after particular interval of time. Is there any way I can configure memcache to always reply for a query using cache instead of first updating its cache because my application just plots datapoints for past one day. Missing out some datapoints is not that critical.

  My site receives a lot of traffic for 2 hours during the day (2000 hits per minute). The rest of the day receives less traffic(500e hits per minute). I have been experimenting with the MaxClients and MaxSpareServers values but I still get some downtime during peek hours. How can I calculate the best values for my configuration based on the amount of ram that I have ? • Any Windows based OpenID servers out there? [closed]

  I've been looking to setup an OpenID server for a special project, but haven't found any workable OpenID server software packages. Originally was looking for a *nix solution, and found several, but they all had some kind of issue. So far I've tried JOIDS, community-id, and a couple others I unfortunately can't remember the names of. I've also come to the conclusion that even if I had managed to get one of those going that the management/upgrade cycles would have placed undue burden on the company (only a couple part time sysadmins with *nix knowledge, the day to day people are primarily Windows). So, I'm hoping that there's a Windows one out that will be functional that someone knows about and will be easy for a minimal support environment...

• Replicate a big, dense Windows volume over a WAN -- too big for DFS-R

  I've got a server with a LOT of small files -- many millions files, and over 1.5 TB of data. I need a decent backup strategy. Any filesystem-based backup takes too long -- just enumerating which files need to be copied takes a day. Acronis can do a disk image in 24 hours, but fails when it tries to do a differential backup the next day. DFS-R won't replicate a volume with this many files. I'm starting to look at Double Take, which seems to be able to do continuous replication. Are there other solutions that can do continuous replication at a block or sector level -- not file-by-file over a WAN?

• Split or individually edit repeating Google Calendar events

  Our company just moved from Microsoft Exchange with Outlook to Google Mail, Calendar, etc. and I am trying to modify a calendar event where it repeats, but the times across the days are not the same. I created an event from 10h00 to 16h30 and made it repeat for two days. Now the times need to be adjusted independently for the two days. I could just cancel the repeat and book a new appointment for the second day but the event has a confirmed room booking and with rooms at a premium I worry that someone else may grab the room before I can create the new second day event. Outlook had a way to modify repeating events individually but I'm not seeing anything like that in the Google Calendar web client. So my question is whether there is a way to individually edit repeating events, or failing that, to split the repeating event into individual ones?

• Disk fragmentation when dealing with many small files

  On a daily basis we generate about 3.4 Million small jpeg files. We also delete about 3.4 Million 90 day old images. To date, we've dealt with this content by storing the images in a hierarchical manner. The heriarchy is something like this: /Year/Month/Day/Source/ This heirarchy allows us to effectively delete days worth of content across all sources. The files are stored on a Windows 2003 server connected to a 14 disk SATA RAID6. We've started having significant performance issues when writing-to and reading-from the disks. This may be due to the performance of the hardware, but I suspect that disk fragmentation bay be a culprit at well. Some people have recommended storing the data in a database, but I've been hesitant to do this. An other thought was to use some sort of container file, like a VHD or something. Does anyone have any advice for mitigating this kind of fragmentation?

• What are the major distinctions between PureDarwin and FreeBSD?

  I'm looking to install a different unix on my workstation to acquire some perspective on GNU/Linux and out of curiosity. I have narrowed my options down to these two. The reason for considering PureDarwin is because I have very little experience with Apple's products. So my question is will installing and using PureDarwin give me a closer understanding of OSX than would running FreeBSD? What I have in mind are day to day routines like adding users, installing software and configuring various aspects of the underlying OS. I know that the GUI of OSX would not be available, but that is not a concern. As a secondary, less important question, can I buy OS X in the apple store and run it in a virtual machine or does that violate their EULA?

• Is it useful check data integrity in one DAT tape?

  I backup my data every day on tape using one drive DAT HP Storageworks DAT 160. I use one tape for every day and I turn them weekly. Every monday I check one tape randomly recover some files saved on it. I know that when data is saved on tape, the driver and backup software check data integrity, but I wonder if a manual check of some data saved has a sense or not. I re-use these tapes many times and I would be sure data are safe.

• In Excel, how to group data by date, and then do operations on the data?

  Hi, I have Excel 2003. My data is like this: 01/10/2010 0.99 02/10/2010 1.49 02/10/2010 0.99 02/10/2010 0.99 02/10/2010 0.99 03/10/2010 1.49 03/10/2010 1.49 03/10/2010 0.99 etc. In fact it is a list of sales every day. I want to have something like this: 01/10/2010 0.99 02/10/2010 4.46 03/10/2010 3.97 I want to group by date, and sum the column B. I'd like to see the evolution of the sales over time, and display a nice graph about that. I have managed to create pivot tables that almost do the job: they list the number of 0.99 and 1.49 each day, but I can't find a way to simply sum everything and group by date. Thanks for reading.

• Ubuntu Wired network(ethernet does not work)

  It was working just fine, until the other day I yanked it out. The wireless works just fine on the same router. If I login to a windows 7 instance on this dual boot laptop then the ehternet works just fine. So it's not a hardware, cable or router issue. The card even gets an ip, but I can't connect to the internet. Here are the details from route, iptables, ifconfig, ping etc. Any ideas?   Due to heavy snowfall I was recently stranded on an airport. Having to do some surfing on my laptop I found an open access point. It offered 30 minutes of free surfing a day. I registered and used up my time. Then I wanted to see if I could use it again - mostly just for the fun of it. I opened a different browser then before and tried to register again. It didn't work. The access point recognized me and told me that I'd have to wait another day to get 30 free minutes again. I reconnected again to force a new IP - still the same. How did it recognize me?

• Windows xp keeps rebooting itself every morning at 8am?

  Hi, I've got windows xp sp3. It seems to restart itself every morning at 8am (judging by the windows logs, I can see all apps log a startup at 8am every day). Whenever I get to the machine in the morning (around 9 am) I see it's rebooted. I've checked that automatic updates are off, and that the power management settings are set to "always on". I'm not sure what else could be causing the machine to reboot, not sure where to start looking. Any ideas? • XP Clients can't copy to networkshare

  i have a windows 2003 domain where i have strange problem. One of our file shares is on a 2003r2 domain controller, xp clients trying to copy files on the share are always getting the error error copying file or folder filename could not be copied. path too long while windows 7 clients work fine. Nothing unusal is found in the eventlog on both the server and the client. It doesn't matter if i access the share by fqdn or ip, the path is including filename shorter than 20 characters i.e. \path\share\file.txt Copying files to other servers is fine. Reading from the shares is ok too. Happened from one day to the other, one windows update that was installed this day (kb2736233) was removed but nothing changed. thanks for any tips

• How to schedule download of windows 7 updates?

  To put it short: I'd like to schedule my windows updates to start/stop at certain times of day. How can I do this? More explanation: This is because my internet traffic is limited by ISP and it's free only during a specific period throughout the day (2:00am-7:00am). I've set windows update setting to check for updates but notify me before downloading in order to prevent it from automatically using up my traffic. But then I have to manually tell it when to start downloading. I obviously don't want to stay up that late just to push a button. So again, how can I schedule windows updates to start/stop at specified times?

• Compress snapshot backups with duplicates

  I have a set of backups of mostly photos. The directory looks sort of like this: backup/Day1/photos/1.jpg .../2.jpg backup/Day2/photos/2.jpg .../3.jpg .../4.jpg backup/DayN/photos/2.jpg .../3.jpg .../9.jpg Files with same name are identical. There are many duplicates. Due to the way the backup system works, it's not possible to create incremental backup directly. I always get the entire dump each day. If I want to create a compressed archive for a date range, say Day 5~9, what is the best tool/compression algorithm to do that?
