• Word 2013 can't compare readonly files

  I am using Tortoise SVN to work with a repository that contains some documentation saved as Word documents. On my old computer, with Office 2010, I was able to compare with previous revisions. Tortoise would open Word in compare view so I could see the differences between the files. I have installed Office 2013 (final version from Technet, not the preview version) on my new laptop for testing and now I can no longer compare Word Documents. Tortoise pops up a generic error that it was unable to compare the two files. Tortoise uses a JScript file to interface with Word, so I ran that file through a debugger and found that the actual error is: The Compare method or property is not available because this command is not available for reading. Some Googling followed by some testing revealed that the error is caused by the first file opened (in this case, the previous version) being opened as Read-Only. If I change the JScript code to open in normal mode, and I find the file on the system and un-check the "Read Only" property (if necessary), then the comparison opens as expected. I was unable to find any documentation about this change to Word on any Microsoft site. Does anyone know why this has been changed, and if it is intentional and not a bug, what the benefit is of requiring the file to be writable in order to compare it with another? Note: This is tagged word-2013-preview but it is actually for the release version of Word that is available on MSDN and Technet. I do not have enough rep. on this site to create new tags (yet).

• Automated software installation for MS Windows?

  I am currently setting up a Windows development environment (the whole Visual Studio 2010 stack plus plugins on top of Windows 7). This has got me wondering whether there's a Windows equivalent to what I do for dev environment setup in Ubuntu. It takes literally hours to get a dev environment set up in Windows, involving a lot of manual intervention. On Ubuntu, I have two shell scripts - one I run as root which configures the system using apt-get (amongst other things), one I run as me which configures my user account. Those scripts live in my private Subversion repository. To set up a dev environment from scratch requires five commands: sudo apt-get install -y subversion svn co http://svn.XXXX.XXX/personal/ cd personal sudo ./ubuntu_setup_root.sh ./ubuntu_setup_user.sh The only human intervention required is to pick a root password for MySQL. So it takes only a few minutes of human attention to go from a vanilla Ubuntu installation to a full development environment with the latest builds of everything, perfectly tailored down to shortcut keys and wallpaper. Is there an equivalent process for Windows? In an ideal world it'd be something trivially scriptable using C# Script or Powershell, which could live in source control & make use of a repository of ISOs downloaded from MSDN ...

  We have performed following steps as of now- Install TFS2010 10.0.30319.1 (RTM) on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(app tier) SQL 2008 SP1 with Cumulative update 2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(data tier) Reporting Service is installed on app tier. After this installation worked fine we installed SharePoint 2010 on app tier. After installation we followed http://blogs.msdn.com/b/team_foundation/archive/2010/03/06/configuring-sharepoint-server-2010-beta-for-dashboard-compatibility-with-tfs-2010-beta2-rc.aspx for configuration. We are not able to perform the last step described in the link as following error occured- TF249063: The following Web service is not available: http://apptier:31254/_vti_bin/TeamFoundationIntegrationService.asmx. This Web service is used for the Team Foundation Server Extensions for SharePoint Products. The underlying error is: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found.. Verify that the following URL points to a valid SharePoint Web application and that the application is available: http://apptier:31254. If the URL is correct and the Web application is operating normally, verify that a firewall is not blocking access to the Web application. We have also noticed that Document Folder in Team project also have red x. Please help. Thanks upfront.

• Error regarding DNS - "... must be able to resolve names ..." (Windows Server 2008 R2 installation)

  I'm trying to replace our old Windows 2000 Server by a Windows Server 2008 R2. I followed the guide at MSDN. Coming to the step "Install Active Directory Domain Services..." the option to install the DNS-Server was grayed-out. According to Microsoft Support I skipped the DNS Server Installation at this point. (Because of the single-label DNS name) I then installed the DNS-Server role and created a forward-lookup-zone for the domain. When running the Best Practices Analyzer of the DNS-Server role I get these two messages for both domain controllers (the old win2k and the new win 2008 R2): The DNS server [IP address] on [adapter name] must be able to resolve names in the primary DNS domain zone The DNS server [IP address] on [adapter name] must be able to resolve names in the forest root domain name zone The TechCenter articles suggest to use a proper DNS Server - that's pointless when I try to configure a proper DNS Server. How do I configure the DNS Server in a way that it resolves these zones? Or are these errors irrelevant? dcdiag /v /test:DNS Seems to run fine...

• Diagnosing a BSOD involving USB

  [Running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit] My new HP Pavilion Elite HPE-450t has been plagued by BSDO crashes since I got it about 5 weeks ago. The crashes are somewhat rare, sometimes not occurring for 3 or 4 days. I have spent a lot of time trying to isolate the device that could be at fault, but I have seen crashes with only the keyboard and mouse plugged in (as USB devices), and I tried two sets of keyboard/mouse, so I'm running out of ideas. :( The WhoCrashed tool gave this info about my latest BSOD: crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\121310-11887-01.dmp This was probably caused by the following module: usbport.sys (USBPORT+0x2DE4E) Bugcheck code: 0xFE (0x5, 0xFFFFFA8008F571A0, 0x80863B34, 0xFFFFFA80092F2510) Error: BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System company: Microsoft Corporation description: USB 1.1 & 2.0 Port Driver Bug check description: This indicates that an error has occurred in a Universal Serial Bus (USB) driver. • Keep Windows Installer from using largest drive for temporary files

  By default Windows Installer uses the largest drive for temporary storage, no matter if that's needed (meaning there would also be enough space on the system drive). Taken from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa371372%28VS.85%29.aspx: During an administrative installation the installer sets ROOTDRIVE to the first connected network drive it finds that can be written to. If it is not an administrative installation, or if the installer can find no network drives, the installer sets ROOTDRIVE to the local drive that can be written to having the most free space. Now my system drive is an SSD, my largest drive is a RAID, that spins down when it's not used. Remember the SSD as system drive? Everything is silent now! Until I install something and Windows Installer wakes up my RAID again just to put a small .tmp file on it... How can I prevent Windows Installer from using the largest drive as temporary storage? Can I maybe set some access rights to disallow the Windows Installer to write on my RAID drive? Any other ideas? Thank you!

  In a windows webservere I'm trying to get a memory dump of a failing IIS 7 worker process (w3wp.exe) with no avail. In the Event Viewer I get the following. I get another event telling me that there is a report here: *C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\AppCrash_w3wp.exe_cdb8af6deb381574fe9fb0dc9aa3edaad59acd5f_cab_4fbf9b53* It contains the following files: WERD931.tmp.appcompat.txt WERDFE9.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml WER99EF.tmp.WERDataCollectionFailure.txt The "depressing one" is the WERDataCollectionFailure that says: Heap dump generation failed: 0x8007012b Mini dump generation failed: 0x8007001f After many tries, lots of msdn documentation and many failed google search. • Error setting up Data Protection Manager 2010 Agents / Network "Unauthenticated" in network settings

  I'm not sure if the two are connected but i suspect they are. Basically I'm tring to setup Data Protection Manager 2010 on a fresh install of Server 2008 R2 in a SBS 2003 domain. Everything went fine until trying to install agents across the network. Upon clicking add, i get the following error message: Unable to connect to the Active Directory Domain Services Database. Make sure that the DPM server is a member of a domain and that the controller is running. Also verify that there is network connectivity between the DPM server and the domain controller. ID: 7 As usual (worryingly) the MSDN support for 2010 products is nearly non existant, clicking the error ID simply gives a page not found error. So after 2 days of Googling and trying various fixes (DNS settings, adding permissions to AD objects, rejoining the domain and many more) I thought I'd ask here in the hope that someone out there may have had this issue before. Any help greatly appreciated! Some further info: Firewalls are disabled on the Server 2008, SBS, and client machines. Manually installing and adding the client in also fails, as the DPM server tries to contact the DC first. Edit: I tried creating a new protection group instead, and it gives a different error upon adding the machines: Following machines are not found in AD: COMPUTERNAME.COMPANYNAME.LOCAL Is there a certain directory structure it follows in AD?

• Microsoft Application Request Routing with Windows Authentication

  I'm running into a problem trying to get Windows Authentication working in an environment that uses Microsoft Application Request Routing and was hoping someone might be able to help. The problem I'm running into is that only some requests are authenticated, while others fail with 401 errors. I have followed the Special Case of Running IIS 7.0 in a Web Farm instructions found at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/webtopics/archive/2009/01/19/service-principal-name-spn-checklist-for-kerberos-authentication-with-iis-7-0.aspx to no avail. My current server setup looks like the following: ARR Two servers set up with IIS shared configuration using IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 Anonymous authentication turned on for the Default Web Site Web Farm Two servers running IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 Three web sites set up using port binding to differentiate between virtual hosts. Ports being used are 8000, 8001, and 8002 Application pools for Windows Authentication all use a common domain account SPN added to domain account for http/<virthalhost-name>:<port-number> and http/<virtualhost-name>.<fully-qualified-domain>:<port-number> The IIS logs show the following when authentication is working/failing. • Is it possible to add/register an MIB for the Windows built-in SNMP service?

  I need to build monitoring into an existing .NET application. I will use SNMP to send the application's status to the Windows SNMP service. I have used a .NET library to create the SNMP SET request according to the MIB that I have been provided with, and with the correct community. My code now sends multiple 'variables' in a SET request, for example: Id: ".1.3.6.1.4.1.43607.1.1.1.1.1" (ObjectIdentifier) Data: 42 (Integer32) On my machine I have enabled the SNMP service, configured a community with READ/WRITE permissions, and added localhost to the list of hosts to accept requests from. When I send the SET request I get a response, but it has error status 17 which, according to MSDN means SNMP_ERRORSTATUS_NOTWRITABLE. The response also has error index set to 8, which is the number of variables I send. If I send 7 variables, the error index is set to 7. I think the problem is that the Windows SNMP service is preconfigured to only accept SET requests for a fixed set of MIBs. How can I get the Windows SNMP service to 'accept' my custom MIB SET request? Edit: I downloaded and installed the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit and tried to 'compile' the MIB file with mibcc.exe ("SNMP MIB Compiler") but I have not been able to compile any MIB files (even the most basic ones like SNMPv2-SMI.mib).

• SharePoint, Exchange and Incoming Emails Without Directory Management Services

  Trying to keep this as simple as possible. We've already created the email accounts that we need (e.g. account[1-20]@domain.com) on Exchange/AD. We'd like to now enable incoming emails on SharePoint 2007 lists corresponding to these accounts. My thinking is we don’t need to configure Directory Management Services [2] – the architecture will be simpler without it and the application doesn’t require these services. However, we still need to route messages from Exchange to either local SMTP services (via the connector described in the articles below) or by user-specific drop-folder settings (if permitted by Exchange). So the question is: can we instruct Exchange to use a drop folder just for accounts account[1-20]@domain.com? or do we need to change the accounts to account[1-20]@sharepointsmtp.domain.com and re-route those message to the local SMTP service that will drop them on disk? I've read the material below.   Issue: Double logins when connecting to RemoteApps or Remote Desktop Environment: Gateway = 1 server 2008 R2 - Roles = Gateway, Session Broker, Connection Mgr, Session Host Configuration server Session hosts = 2 servers 2008 R2 - Roles = App Manager and Session host configuration Testing: I can get to the url http://RDS.domain.com/rdweb - I get prompted for authentication (1) Pass authentication, get list of remote apps. Click on remoteapps or remote desktop, get prompted for authentication again (2). Pass authentication, I get access to app or RDP. Done so far. On session host Signed rdp files with cert. Added the following to the custom RDP settings: Authenticaton level:i:0 = If server authentication fails, connect to the computer without warning (Connect and don’t warn me). prompt for credentials on client:i:1 = RDC will prompt for credentials when connecting to a server that does not support server authentication. enablecredsspsupport:i:1 = RDP will use CredSSP, if the operating system supports CredSSP. • MS Excel 2010 - Using DSN + 32 bit drivers

  I need some advice as im running into a problem and so far i have been unable to find a solution. We have a set of reports developed in MS Excel that use DSN file to connect to data sources to retrieve data, these work fine on 32 / 64bit systems, however we are moving to a terminal server environment using windows 2008 R2 64Bit. The reports fail to run using the DSN's within this environment if we only have the 32bit drivers installed and configured in the ODBC settings, the minute we install the 64Bit drivers the software works. Is there a way / Method of getting Excel or the DSN file to NOT use the 64Bit driver, but force it to use the 32bit driver. ANSWERED - But due to low user score i cannot "answer" my own question... Sadly there is no way to-do what i want to-do, without a lot of very nasty and not 100% perfect reg hacks. • How does Windows 7 taskbar "color hot-tracking" feature calculate the colour to use?

  This has intrigued me for quite some time. Does anyone know the algorithm Windows 7 Aero uses to determine the colour to use as the hot-tracking hover highlight on taskbar buttons for currently-running apps? It is definitely based on the icon of the app, but I can't see a specific pattern of where it's getting the colour value from. It doesn't seem to be any of the following: An average colour value from the entire icon, otherwise you would get brown all the time with multi-coloured icons like Chrome. The colour used the most in the image, otherwise you'd get yellow for the SQL Server Management Studio icon (6th from left). Also, the Chrome icon used red, green and yellow in equal measure. A colour located at certain pixel coordinates within the icon, because Chrome is red -indicating the top of the icon - and Notepad++ (2nd from right) is green - indicating the bottom of the icon. I asked this question on ux.stackoverflow.com and it got closed as off-topic, but someone answered with the following: As described by Raymond Chen in this MSDN blog article: Some people ask how it's done. It's really nothing special. The code just looks for the predominant color in the icon. (And, since visual designers are sticklers for this sort of thing, black, white, and shades of gray are not considered "colors" for the purpose of this calculation.) However I wasn't really satisfied with that answer because it doesn't explain how the "predominant" colour is calculated. Surely on the SQL Management Studio icon, the predominant colour, to my eyes at least, is yellow. Yet the highlight is green. I want to know, specifically, what the algorithm is.

• Possible disk IO issue

  I've been trying to really figure out what my IOPS are on my DB server array and see if it's just too much. The array is four 72.6gb 15k rpm drives in RAID 5. To calculate IOPS for RAID 5 the following formula is used: (reads + (4 * Writes)) / Number of disks = total IOPS. The formula is from MSDN. I also want to calculate the Avg Queue Length but I'm not sure where they are getting the formula from, but i think it reads on that page as avg que length/number of disks = actual queue. To populate that formula I used the perfmon to gather the needed information. I came up with this, under normal production load: (873.982 + (4 * 28.999)) / 4 = 247.495. Also the disk queue lengh of 14.454/4 = 3.614. So to the question, am I wrong in thinking this array has a very high disk IO? Edit I got the chance to review it again this morning under normal/high load. This time with even bigger numbers and IOPS in excess of 600 for about 5 minutes then it died down again. But I also took a look at the Avg sec/Transfer, %Disk Time, and %Idle Time. These number were taken when the reads/writes per sec were only 332.997/17.999 respectively. %Disk Time: 219.436 %Idle Time: 0.300 Avg Disk Queue Length: 2.194 Avg Disk sec/Transfer: 0.006 Pages/sec: 2927.802 % Processor Time: 21.877 Edit (again) Looks like I have that issue solved. • Best SSD tweaks for Windows 7

  I have seen many articles about tweaking an SSD, but many of them seem outdated, or too broad (read all Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 general tweaks). And I know that Windows 7 has been specifically tweaked for SSD by the Windows team, so I don't want to do something that was written for Windows XP in mind and end up circumventing something the Windows team has specifically designed in to Windows 7. So my question is what are the best SSD tweaks for Windows 7 that you have found to get the performance out of your drive? I hope to make a comprehensive list in the answers below so there won't be so much disinformation in the forums about what to do and what not to do. Here are a few that I see posted up on the forums alot, and some questions to get the discussion started: Disabling Superfetch. Yes or No Disabling Page File or limiting it to a really small size such as 500 MB. Disabling Indexing. Yes or No Disabling Defragmenting. • Windows 7 - Can't get my TV working as primary display with nVidia 7900GS

  I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 RTM (from MSDN) on my HTPC, which is connected to a 42" Magnavox LCD TV via component cables to my nVidia 7900GS. Everything was fine through the installation until I went to install the official driver from nVidia. Towards the end of the installation, the TV blinked off and wouldn't come back on. I went and got an LCD monitor and plugged it into a DVI port and the monitor came right up, but was automatically selected as the primary display. Now, if I set the TV to be the primary display, the TV just blanks until I hit escape to cancel the "settings have changed, do you want to keep them" dialog. Any suggestions? Update: I'm able to set the TV as the primary display using the Windows 7 "screen resolution" configuration panel. However, if I try to remove the LCD monitor either by unplugging it or using the configuration, the TV blanks out again. Update 2: This setup was working correctly in Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Update 3: I've uninstalled the nVidia driver and am using the driver that Windows Update installed. As much as this offends my geek sensibilities (must use the "right" driver!!), well, It Works™.

• Windows based development environment: HyperV, VMWare, or VirtualBox on development machine?

  I am a software engineer with a little bit of an informal "support" functionality... I am trying to figure out what is the best possible approach to employing virtualization technologies into our development process. Since the code we develop is server-centric, testing it often requires a VM with specific software requirements. I used to use VM Ware player (free version) to run my VM's until both of my laptops started exhibiting issues with corrupted windows 7 services and dying hard drives. All leads pointed to VMWare, which by the way seems to be a solid product if you pay for the Workstation edition ($300). On a side note, I have always been a fan of the Windows Server product line. I think it makes for one of the best development environments out there - it is highly scalable, highly reliable, and very efficient. So to be fair I replaced the drives of the laptops and installed Windows Server 2008R2, VS2010 Ultimate SP1, SQL Server 2008R2, TFS Server 2010 and all other tools and API's needed do do my work properly. So now I am stuck with a bunch of VMWare VMs. I don't want to repeat of what happened before, and I certainly don't want to bog down my machine with an inefficient hypervisor or services that are not needed. Futhermore the VMDK hard-disk format used by VMWare is not compatible with the VHD format of Hyper V. It is my understanding that converting from one format to the other can only happen by Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine which I have downloaded from MSDN and ready to install. I guess the question at this point is: Does SCVM run as another service in Windows? Is it a memory hog? What is a better virtualization technology - Hyper-V or Virtual Box in terms of efficiency ease of use and most importantly - memory footprint? (Keep in mind the development environment already has a ton of services running such as TFS Server, SQL Server, IIS, etc...) How would you advise to proceed at this point so that the VMs are still used in the test process? Thanks Martin

  I have a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro installed from MSDN. I have Google Chrome installed (stable channel) and it is set as my default browser. I even went into Control Panel Default Programs to ensure that Chrome had all its defaults. When other desktop applications try to launch my browser they always fail. For example, while trying to install the Android SDK for Windows the installer accurately detected that I did not have the JDK installed. It provides a friendly button to visit java.oracle.com. When pressing this button, nothing happens at all. You can see that here: http://youtu.be/XXL8GhuWWg0 If it were only that application that was having issues I wouldn't think anything of it but I have been encountering similar issues all over the place. Probably the most irritating one is when visual studio has updates; clicking the update button does nothing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwd1mn3TId0 You can see in that screencast that Visual Studio is not able to launch the browser no matter what I click. The update button doesn't do anything and neither do the two links in the update's description. Any suggestions? I'm assuming it's a Windows issue since it is happening in multiple applications. UPDATE: Setting IE as the default browser fixes the issue. So it has something to do with it not being able to launch Chrome programmatically. Is it even possible to workaround this bug or do I have to suffer with IE as default for now?

• Copy Database Wizard fails on creation of view into another not-yet-copied database

  Update - I found that doing a manual detach/reattach using MSDN article "How to: Move a Database Using Detach and Attach (Transact-SQL)" got around this issue. I'll just be creating a script to dettach and reattach but do the file copies manually. Any info on how to overcome the problems with the wizard would be helpful in the future. I am in the process of moving around 20 databases from our current server to a new one. When performing the copies however I have found that some databases can not copy if they have views into other databases that have not yet been copied to the target system. The log file generated says "failed with the following error: "Invalid object name" in reference to the database in the view. If I first copy just the database referenced in the view and then in a separate step copy the database over containing the view it is successful. However some other database have views into each other so can't just adjust the order in which the copy occurs. Is there any way to ignore this error and just allow everything to copy?

• Windows Server 2012 licensing issue preventing RDP connections?

  I am witnessing an unusual behaviour on 1 of 5 Windows Server 2012 R2 machines (clean install) that is preventing any remote connections from being established via RDP. I have run through the prerequisites for RDP here but I am finding that any remote connection attempt instantly stops the "Windows Protection Service". When I check the event logs I see the following entry. The Software Protection Service has stopped Event ID: 903 Source: Security-SPP From what I have read Security-SPP is tasked with enforcing activation and licensing, it appears that RDP requires this service to be in the running state. Is it possible that I have inadvertently activated this instance of Windows with a key that has already been associated to another instance (We have 5 keys as part of an MSDN subscription)? Would this be sufficient to block RDP access? When I look under System Properties (Windows Activation) it states that Windows is activated and there are no other obvious indicators that there's a licensing issue. EDIT 1: I ran a Powershell script to display the product keys for all servers in order to check for any duplication. For the problematic server I am getting the message The RPC server is unavailable.

• Installing Windows 8 to another computer with an OEM product Key

  Questions come up after reading the article about the new method Microsoft uses to License windows 8 computers. Let say I bought a Brand new laptop with windows 8 preloaded. Not like the old way, there is no OEM sticker in the back of the computer which can be used for reloading system.(new product key is stored in BIOS as mentioned in the article, the key can be pulled out by using a software anyway). Is it possible to install windows 8 on another computer with that particular key in case the computer is totally damaged? Here is what i tried: First, I extracted the key with a software name "windows 8 key viewer". using the windows 8 upgrade tool to determine what copy of windows 8 I should download for the installation. The tool did correctly recognized the key as a legitimate one. but it claims that key can not be installed with a retail media (Since it is an oem key). Does this mean the only way to do it is to use an OEM CD from the manufacturer? Will ISO from MSDN source do? or it is just not possible??

• Asterisk relay between multiple subnets

  I wonder what's the best way to go when you have phones on multiple networks which are not directly reachable. I have 3 networks 10.3.x.x 10.6.x.x 10.17.x.x My asterisk server resides on the 10.3.0.5 IP. The machines from the 10.6 and 10.17 networks are routed here through VPN tunnels. At this point we don't talk about NAT anywhere on the network just pure routing. Since the 10.3.0.5 PBX has routes back to all the subnet's it has no problem to communicate with softphones/hardphones from these ranges. The problem comes from that Asterisk (as far as I understand) only responsible for the SIP communication part not the Audio/Video transmission which is in P2P fashion done between the devices. So although a client using sipdroid from 10.6.x.x is able to connect to the pbx (10.3.0.5) and dial a bria client on the 10.17.x.x network once the phone rings out and the call establishes no audio will be transmitted simply because it has no way to directly connect there. For this there are multiple solutions described in this text: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee480411%28v=winembedded.60%29.aspx What I would prefer is to keep these networks segregated as they are now. What would be the best solution? Is it possible to actually relay through all the audio/video information through the Asterisk server? That would be the best in my case, I using Astlinux there which has a lot of other parts. Thanks
