  • Connect a PC to Mac OS X Server

  • PHP & MySQL on Mac OS X: Access denied for GUI user

    Hey! This question was first posted to Stack Overflow, but as it is perhaps just as much a server issue I though it might be just as well to post it here also. I have just installed and configured Apache, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin on my Macbook in order to have a local development environment. But after I moved one of my projects over to the local server I get a weird MySQL error from one of my calls to mysql_query(): Access denied for user '_securityagent'@'localhost' (using password: NO) First of all, the query I'm sending to MySQL is all valid, and I've even testet it through phpMyAdmin with perfect result. Secondly, the error message only happens here while I have at least 4 other mysql connections and queries per page. This call to mysql_query() happens at the end of a really long function that handles data for newly created or modified articles. This basically what it does: Collect all the data from article form (title, content, dates, etc..) Validate collected data Connect to database Dynamically build SQL query based on validated article data Send query to database before closing the connection Pretty basic, I know. I did not recognize the username "_securityagent" so after a quick search I came across this from and article at Apple's Developer Connection talking about some random bug: Mac OS X's security infrastructure gets around this problem by running its GUI code as a special user, "_securityagent". Then I tried put a var_dump() on all variables used in the mysql_connect() call, and every time it returns the correct values (where username is not "_securityagent" of course). Thus I'm wondering if anyone has any idea why 'securityagent' is trying to connect to my database - and how I can keep this error from occurring when I call mysql_query(). Update: Here is the exact code I'm using to connect to the database.   • Mac OS X: which folders should ClamXav Sentry watch?

    I'm using ClamXav on my Mac. I've read this, and I am aware of the whole Macs-need-no-AV-but-they-do-anyway discussion. I guess that's why I would feel like a real jerk if I somehow managed to compromise my system! So ClamXav has been downloaded and ClamXav Sentry set up to start on log-in, but it doesn't really do anything before you tell it to. Specifically, you have to tell it which folders to watch for virusses/vira so I'm wondering, where are good places to look? Currently it's been set up to look the following places: In the home folder: ~/Downloads ~/Library/Caches ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items ~/Library/Cookies ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins ~/Library/LaunchAgents In my system folder: /Library/Application Support /Library/Caches /Library/Contextual Menu Items /Library/Cookies /Library/Internet Plug-Ins /Library/LaunchAgents /Library/LaunchDaemons /Library/Startupitems Basically, this is 100% conjecture. All (most of) the folders have something to do with the Internet and things that start up automatically, so I'm guessing that's where vira go. But still, the qustion: Which folders should ClamXav Sentry watch, if any? FYI, I'm not using any mail applications, but please include that in your answer for anyone who might be interested.

  • How to reset MacOsX while keeping BootCamp?

    I have MacOsX 10.8.2 installed on my MacBook Pro and Windows 8 licenced on a BootCamp partition. I have messed up my MacOsx partition (problems while programming, .h files not found, old applications removed that still appears) and I wanna start back from a clean OS. Is there a Way to reset my partition (or reinstall, obviously) keeping my BootCamp partition safe ? I know I could use my recovery partition but I do not know if it won't delete my Windows and it no longer appears in disk utility. As I found no answers in the Internet, does someone how how to do that ? Thanks in advance.

  • Safari's location bar (auto-suggest and web search)

    Auto-suggest don't seem to work for queries with spaces. Am I missing something? If you select an item from the suggestion list that was matched by its title, the title is filled in before the address. Can you change it to work like in other browsers? SMRT disables searching by title completely. Can you combine Top Hit, History and Bookmarks into a single section? The preferences starting with DebugSafari4 don't work anymore. (Like DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList.) Can you direct unresolved addresses to something like google.com/search?q=?&btnI instead of ?.com? Like by changing keyword.URL in Firefox. Can you remove or hide the web search field? In Camino, Cruz and Fluid it can be resized to zero width. You can't circumvent the normal maximum ratio with InputFieldWidthRatio. AddressBarIncludesGoogle doesn't appear do anything in the current version. Are there fixes or workarounds to any of these? I'm lumping these issues together, because they are closely related — a lot of them were introduced when the location bar was redesigned in Safari 5. I'm also hoping to find something like an extension or a plugin that would replace the standard location bar.

  • Using Komodo IDE as Text editor from the OS X terminal

    According to this URL I should be able to start Komodo IDE from the command line when I want to edit a file.   • OS X Lion: Emptying the trash takes "forever": is using rm -r safe?

    Emptying my Trash in OS X Lion (non securely) is taking about three hours (about 1.5 million files, from a Time Machine backup). I had to stop the process a few times already, because I could not move my laptop with the external harddrive the files are on. This is also a problem because the Trash emptying is restarted from the very beginning each time I empty the Trash again (i.e., files are not deleted when the Trash emptying is aborted). I read that it is faster to use rm -rf on ~/.Trash, in this case. However, is this safe? (I am afraid that does OS X Lion performs tasks behind the scenes—which would explain its slowness—that rm -r does not, which could lead to problems in the future.)

  • Looking for software to create a personal hotspot on Mac OS X (not using the built-in ability)

    I got my nifty little MacBook Air today. Since I will be going on travel I was hoping to use my iPad 3G as screen extension with Air Display. It works being in a shared WiFi network. Sadly Apple is a bit restrictive on the tethering with their mobile devices such as the iPad. Now I read iOS 4.3 will enable the iPad to use tethered networks. But the feature will not be working for iPad 3G. I assume their big partner telecom companies fear everyone will quit their internet contract with them. So I want to create a personal hotspot on my MacBook and use it on my iPad. But the iPad is not able to use this network. The network is visible but not usable. On Windows there is this connectify program which lets the PC act as wireless router. Does anybody know a similar program for Mac which would turn it into a wireless router? Or is there something I don't see with Mac OS X's builtin features?

  • I can't connect new Windows 7 PC to Mac iBook with OS 10.3.9

    Help ! I have an old iBook wired to a router and a new PC linking wirelessly to same router. On the Mac I have 'seen' the PC but not been able to connect to it. On the PC, the Network and Sharing Centre lists 'IBOOK'. When I click on this, 'Windows Security' asks me to 'Enter Network Password', asking for User name and password. I have tried: 1) The user name and password of my admin account on the iBook. This returns a 'logon failure' message but lists the user name as [NAME_OF_PC\User Name], suggesting it was looking for the user name of the PC, not the Mac. 2) The user name and password of my account on the PC. This also returns a 'logon failure' message. 3) The user name of my account on the PC and the 'homegroup password' given to me by Windows when setting up the PC. This also returns a 'logon failure' message. Today I've tried connecting the two machines via a patch cable - still no joy. Can anyone help? It is 20 years since I wrestled with any OS other than Mac, and 10 years since I've done mich wrangling with the Macs, so please assume no knowledge! Thanks in advance,

  • greyed out folder in OS X

    Hi all, I installed the intel compiler on my Mac (10.6), and it installed fine, but the folder in which it is installed (/opt, i.e. at the root) is not visible by default, and when I use the Finder "go to" feature, it appears, but as greyed out. What does it mean? I also checked out the permissions, and the only odd thing is that there is an @ at the end of permissions. Any ideas? I'm asking because while the intel compiler is installed (all the files are there), I cant use it from XCode (3.2), and I'm wondering whether this could be why. Thank in advance A

    I'd like to convert a folder of PNGs into a quicktime .mov with PNG compression (it's a folder of fractals in an animation; PNG compression works great here and the losslessness is important). What programs will do this with minimal fuss? (I don't have or want to pay for a full license of QuickTime Pro.) UPDATE: Let me make this more clear: minimal fuss means: I download some EncoderMagic.app (for example), I double click it to launch it. I select the folder with my numbered images, and out pops my movie. No mess. No resizing. ... Perhaps this doesn't exist (or is called QuickTime Pro?)

  • Disabling the Driver Region on a Mac

    So, this is the first time I try to watch a DVD disc on my (new) Mac and I wonder if I can keep it as fresh-new by not choosing any region and just play discs from anywhere. I understand the media industry made that lock for copyright and whatever, but do I absolutely have to choose a region to be able to play disks, even if I got original ones from different places? Why can I "change region" just 5 times, why even allowing changing? Also, on a side-note, I wonder how to disable the regular DVD Player.

  • Can't get iPhone to Sync with MacBook running OS X.

    I can't get the iPhone to sync with my MacBook running OS X, I've re-installed OS X and iTunes and then it worked, however once the MacBook had been switched off and on again the iPhone wouldn't sync. I then deleted AppleMobileDevice.kext, DeviceLink.Framework, MobileDevice.Framework and AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pky and re-installed iTunes, this then solved the problem until the MacBook was turned off and then on again.   • Help transferring Mac OS X fonts to Windows

    I have been sent a QuarkXPress document which contains a number of unusual fonts which were also sent to me. The fonts were in a folder named fonts and then it was all zipped up into a single archive containing the document and fonts folder. I believe this was done on a machine running Mac OS X. I have unzipped the archive, but all of the files in the fonts folder have no size - i.e. they are 0 bytes files. However there is also a _MACOSX folder which has a fonts subfolder. In here I can see all the font files (prefixed with .) and they all have a size, i.e. are not 0 bytes. Presumably these are the actual font files I need but I cannot figure out how to install them on Windows. I have tried renaming the files to have .ttf and .otf extensions and then installing them but that doesn't seem to work - I just get an "Invalid font file" message. Any other ideas?

What's going on?

I'm not really a perl user beyond enjoying it for massive directory-recursive find/replace operations within text files, so I haven't much of an idea what the permissions here are supposed to look like, and I'm not really sure how to go about determining how macports has gone and installed perl this way when it's otherwise worked without failure for years now. Does anyone have any recommendations for the sanest path towards rectifying this issue? Also, is there any interesting reason as to why the macports default for the perl5 port installs 5.12.4, and not 5.16.0, which has to be explicitly installed via the perl5.16 port? Thanks again!

    I screwed up my ruby buy executing the command sudo easy_install pip> /usr/bin/ruby -e "$(/usr/bin/curl -fksSL https://raw.github.com/mxcl/homebrew/master/Library/Contributions/install_homebrew.rb)" It showed error: Couldn't find index page for '-e' (maybe misspelled?)
