  • Sharing internet connection over VPN in Windows XP

    How can I share my internet connection with VPN clients using the Windows XP built-in VPN server? I want to be able to use my home internet connection (on an XP machine) from my anywhere using my laptop (Windows 7 machine). The built-in VPN server in XP and the VPN client in Windows 7 seem to do a great job of giving me access to both machines securely over the internet, but I cannot find a way to use ICS in conjunction with the incoming connection to give access to my home internet connection to my laptop remotely. Is there a way to do this? or is there an alternative VPN server software that is not limited to only local access?

    quick back story-- I am working on ASP.Net based template editor that lets authors create text templates using Javascript inserted placeholder tags that will be filled in with dynamic text when the templates are used to display the final results. For example the author might create a template like The word [%12#add] was generated dynamically. The application would eventually replace the tag with a dynamic word down the road (though it's not specifically relevant to this post) The word foo was generated dynmamically. Depending on the circumstances, the template may be created in a text input, textarea or a modified version of the Ajax Control Toolkit HTML Editor. There might be 40 or more of these editable elements on the page, so using lots of stripped down or modified HTML editors would probably bog the page down too much. The problem is that the tags such as [%12#add] are displayed inline with the user text and the result is confusing and aesthetically gross. The goal is parse the contens of the source element and when a tags such as [%12#add] are encountered, display something prettier and less cryptic to the user such as a stylable element or image wherever tags such as [%12#add] occur. The application still needs the template text with the tags on postback. So the user might see The word tag placeholder was generated dynamically. but the original template would still be the value of the text input box The word [%12#add] was generated dynamically. It seems HTML editors like the ACT version and FckEditor accomplish this by rendering their output in an IFrame, but rather than kill myself trying to roll a lighter specialized version myself, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of an existing free component or approach that has already tackled this. With good reason, I don't think S.O. allows HTML formatting, but the bold "tag placeholder" above would ideally be something like tag placeholder.

    Hi everybody. I'm working on a small macro to send mail from excel 2007 using my Lotus Notes session. The sending mail part is working fine. Now I need to send in the body part, a part of a stylesheet (for instance the area from A1:B20). This area has colors, bold font.     Prompted by the answers to this question I decided to give the Windows built in time synchronisation another go. However, no matter what time server I use I get this error: "An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with [name of time server]." The help suggests the following as reasons for failure: You are not connected to the Internet. Establish an Internet connection before you attempt to synchronize your clock. Your personal or network firewall prevents clock synchronization. Most corporate and organizational firewalls will block time synchronization, as do some personal firewalls. Home users should read the firewall documentation for information about unblocking network time protocol (NTP). You should be able to synchronize your clock if you switch to Windows Firewall. The Internet time server is too busy or is temporarily unavailable. If this is the case, try synchronizing your clock later, or update it manually by double-clicking the clock on the taskbar. You can also try using a different time server. The time shown on your computer is too different from the current time on the Internet time server. Internet time servers might not synchronize your clock if your computer's time is off by more than 15 hours. To synchronize the time properly, ensure that the date and time settings are set close to your current time in the Date and Time Properties in Control Panel. Now the first reason is clearly wrong - I am connected to the internet. I can see the 2nd being the most likely cause. I have Sygate Personal Firewall running, but it normally asks if something it trying to connect for the first time. Does anyone know I can unblock the NTP protocol - or at least check if it is blocked?. I don't think it's #3 or #4 as I've tried a number of different servers including the one currently used by Atomic Clock Sync. Though if someone knows the address of a UK time server I can double check this.

    I realize for single applications - the application itself has to be designed to take advantage of multiple cores. But what about executing many different applications simultaneously? On my development machine at an average instance, I run multiple servers (a database server, a web server), multiple instance of IDEs (either Visual Studio or NetBeans), Web-browser with multiple tabs (in Chrome, each tab is a process on its own), FTP client, SSH client etc. Does having a multi-core system improve the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously?

  • Fedora 15: em1 recently dissapeared and hostapd no longer serves internet to wirelessly connected devices

    I have a laptop running hostapd, phpd, and mysql. This laptop uses an Ethernet connection to connect to the internet and acts as a wireless access point for my workplace's wifi devices. After installing some software and reconnecting my Ethernet elsewhere, my "em1" device is no longer present and wirelessly connected devices can no longer reach the internet. The software I recently installed is: pptp, pptpd, and updated some fedora libraries. I have also recently moved my desk and laptop to another location and thus had to reconnect the Ethernet elsewhere. Wifi devices no longer have access to the internet. Wirelessly connected devices are able to successfully log into the laptop, showing full strength, correct SSID, and uses the proper password. However, when I tried to connect to a site like google, the request times out. The device "em1" also no longer appears on my machine. Running: # ifup em1 will give me the following output: ERROR : [/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth] Device em1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. And running: # dhclient em1 has the following output: Cannot find device "em1" When I run # dmesg|grep renamed, I get the following: renamed network interface eth0 to p4p1. I've tried to connect to the internet through p4p1 directly from the laptop and was successful. However, my wireless devices connected to my laptop are not able to connect to the internet. I have uninstalled pptp and pptpd using # yum erase ... but the problem still persists. To install pptp I used: # yum install pptp To install pptpd I did the following: # rpm -Uvh http://poptop.sourceforge.net/yum/stable/fc15/pptp-release-current.noarch.rpm # yum install pptpd To update my fedora libraries I used: # yum check-update # yum update EDIT: Running # route produces the following results: Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default 10.11.200.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 p4p1 10.11.200.0 * 255.255.252.0 U 0 0 0 p4p1 172.16.100.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 wlan0

    I have an Ubuntu 12.10 box with 2 NICs. eth0 is connected to my 192.168.1.X network, which is connected to my home router and out to the internet. I want the other interface, eth1,to support 10.0.0.x and allow devices on that network to access the internet through my ubuntu box. I do not need dhcp on the 10.0.0.x network. Here's a schematic: Internet --- home router ---- ubuntu[eth0:192.168.1.x, eth1:10.0.0.x] --- [10.0.0.x device] How do I configure the ubuntu box to share the internet with devices on that subnetwork? I've read there's a SPI firewall enabled.

  • Routing Traffic on Ubuntu to give Raspberry PI Internet Access

    I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for setting up my Linux (Ubuntu 12.04) box to route traffic from eth0 to wlan0. I'll try and explain the problem I am trying to solve: I currently have two separate networks: [RaspberryPi/eth0] 192.168.2.2 / 255.255.255.0 ^ | v [Ubuntu/eth0] 192.168.2.1 / 255.255.255.0 And: [Ubuntu/wlan0] 192.168.1.100 / 255.255.255.0 ^ | v [ADSL router] 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0 So currently if I want to access the RaspberryPI I can SSH from the Ubuntu box to the PI. And if I want to use the Internet, I have full access from the Ubuntu box, but nothing from the RaspberryPI - the two networks are partitioned. What I would like to do is configure things so that the RaspberryPI has Internet access via the Ubuntu box and out to the Internet. I tried to create a bridge, but got the message "wlan0: operation not supported" (wireless chipset is Ralink RT3062). I'm sure giving the Raspberry PI Internet access should be easy to do in this configuration, but I am a bit lost - can someone point me in the right direction please?

  • Allowing a private subnet EC2 access to the internet - Amazon AWS

    I have a VPC "VPC with Public and Private Subnets" created via the VPC wizard which should include NAT for the private subnet VPCs however it's not working. They are unable to browse the internet, resolve internet names and ping internet IPs. This is a stock standard conf, I am very sure of that so I am unsure why it's not working. Perhaps there was something additional I am supposed to do that I don't know about? Thank you, Xavier.

    Hi, I have the following line of code that works fine in Firefox, Chrome and Safari, but not in internet explorer 8. <a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="showHide('reading','type_r','r');">Show me the example</a> The function simply shows and hides a div on clicking the hyperlink. Is there anything I'm missing here?   • Unable to share internet by using HOSTEDNETWORK after installing AVAST recently

    I was able to share my laptop's internet with my smartphone by using this command "netsh wlan start hostednetwork". But when I installed Avast in my Windows 8 OS, I am able to start the hostednetwork as before and my smartphone also finds the virtual AP but still I can't use internet on the smartphone. It's like the internet sharing has been disabled by the Antivirus. How do I tell Avast that its okay to use the hostednetwork?

    I run my taskbar buttons with the setting "Combine when taskbar is full". Is there any way to force some of your pinned taskbar applications to only use the "icon" rather than the icon + label? I am aware of the trick to force the size of the taskbar icons for all applications (detailed here and here), but there are some applications that I would like to only have the icon, and others where it is important to show icon + label.

    This is a continuation of my previous question. The problems started when I turned on my wireless connection for the first time. Since then, every time I boot my Windows 7, my LAN connection does not have internet access. In my previous question, I got a key answer (route delete). Now my procedure to get LAN internet connectivity (local network works fine) when I boot looks like this: Power on WLAN Disconnect LAN cable Power off WLAN Execute route delete 0.0.0.0 if 11 Connect LAN cable Now my LAN connection has internet access. Another behavior that I can't explain - while my LAN connection has no internet access, Network and Sharing center refers to it as Unknown network, with a public icon. When I go through the fore mentioned procedure, it is referred to with my home WLAN network name, with status connected, and the Unknown network disappears.

  • Windows Server 2003: Router, DHCP, Looses internet connection

    I have following setup: a windows server 2003 dedicated server with tho nics. One is connected to internet (no modem/router), and second one is connected to private network. Server has DHCP server installed on it and internet nic is being shared for internet access. The problem is sometimes server looses connection to the internet, so same happens to private network. So far I can manually fix it by releasing and renewing IP address. What could be the cause of this problem? DHCP lease from ISP? Thanks
