    I'm trying to format a date in Rails 3 using the new syntax as described in the code: http://github.com/rails/rails/blob/master/activesupport/lib/active_support/core_ext/date/conversions.rb by using the following syntax in an initialiser: Date::DATE_FORMATS[:my_format] = '%m %d %Y' I am then referencing dates in my view like so: comment.created_at.to_formatted_s(:my_format) However, I'm just getting the default formatting - what could be wrong?

  • PostgreSQL + Rails citext

    I am trying to move to heroku which uses PostgreSQL 8.4 which has a citext column type which is nice since the app was written for MySQL. Is there any way to use :citext with rails (so that if the migrations are run on MySQL the citext would just use string/text?   • Integrating WebSockets with Rails using Rack and Event Machine

    I have created an Asynchronous version of Rails 3 that I would like to integrate with a WebSocket implementation. I am using EventMachine, Ruby 1.9, Fibers and various em-flavoured libraries as documented by the wickedly good Ilya Grigorik. I have been looking at em-websocket as the handler for WebSocket connections but unsure of the best approach for hooking this into a Rails app. Ideally, this would work in a similar fashion to node.js with Express and Socket.io - incoming connections should be detected and dispatched to the WebSocket handler or the regular rails stack as indicated by the HTTP headers & etc. TL;DR WebSocket handler that plugs into an existing Rails application Transparently dispatch incoming WebSocket requests to endpoints in the app

    I like that Rails 3 is so easy to install: gem install rails --pre, and all of the dependencies are automatically installed for you. But, what about uninstalling it? If I just do gem uninstall rails, I still have actionmailer (3.0.0.beta3) actionpack (3.0.0.beta3) activemodel (3.0.0.beta3) activerecord (3.0.0.beta3) activeresource (3.0.0.beta3) activesupport (3.0.0.beta3) which I want to get rid of. What's the easiest way to do so?

    I'm trying to load up rails in the test environment using a ruby script. I've tried googling a bit and found this recommendation: require "../../config/environment" ENV['RAILS_ENV'] = ARGV.first || ENV['RAILS_ENV'] || 'test' This seems to load up my environment alright, but my development database is still being used. Am I doing something wrong? Everything seems to be working fine, but for whatever reason rails seems to be loading in the development environment instead of the test environment.   • Rails streaming file download

    I'm trying to implement a file download with Rails. I want to eventually migrate this code to using S3 to serve the file. I've copied the Rails send_file code almost verbatim and I cannot seem to get it to stream a file to the user. What happens is that it sends 'a' file to the user, but the downloaded file itself simply contains the text.inspect of the Proc: # What am I doing wrong here? options = {} options[:length] = File.size(file.path) options[:filename] = File.basename(file.path) send_file_headers! options render :status => 200, :text => Proc.new { |response, output| len = 4096 File.open(file.path, 'rb') do |fh| while buf = fh.read(len) output.write(buf) end end } Ps: I've read in a number of other posts that it's not advisable to send files through the Rails stack, and if possible serve using the web server, or in the case of S3 use the hashed URL it can provide. Yes, we really do want to serve the file through the Rails stack.

    Hello, I am searching for a rails-based CMS that provide rich text editing feature (e.g. I need an interface very similar to that of Wordpress where you can easily style up your static pages and upload pictures without knowing any css or html) AND easy to be dropped into an existing rails application. Camtose, RadiantCMS and few other ones did not seem to offer the rich interface I was looking for. RefineryCMS had conflict with my existing user authentication and I did not really find a solution to it. I am just wondering if there are any rails based cms that can meet my needs. Please advise if you know of any such rails-based CMS. Thank you for your help!

  • How are $LOAD_PATH and $: different?

    I needed to know what was in my Ruby load path, so I did this: $ ruby -e "puts $LOAD_PATH" It didn't print anything out, which I didn't expect. So I tried this: $ ruby -e "puts $:" /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8 /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/i486-linux /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/i386-linux /usr/local/lib/site_ruby /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8 /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/1.8/i486-linux /usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby /usr/lib/ruby/1.8 /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/i486-linux /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/i386-linux . Why does the second one give me the expected output and the first one doesn't? Shouldn't they be the same? I just tried it in irb, and I got the results I expected.   • Nginx Rails app can't deploy

    I have an issue with my rails application running with passenger and nginx hosted in Ubuntu 12.04. In the nginx.conf file below, my "example.com" (Regular HTML) and "redmine.example.com" (Rails app) are working perfectly, but my "crete.example.com" (Another Rails app) is showing "502 bad gateway".     I am looking for TDD resources that are specific to Rails. I've seen the Rails Guide: The Basics of Creating a Rails Plugin which really spurred my interest in the topic. I have the Agile Development with Rails book and I see there's some testing-related information there. However, it seems like the author takes you through the steps of building the app, then adds testing afterward. This isn't really Test Driven Development. Ideally, I'd like a book on this, but a collection of other tutorials or articles would be great if such a book doesn't exist. Things I'd like to learn: Primary goal: Best Practices Unit testing How to utilize Fixtures Possibly using existing development data in place of fixtures What's the community standard here?     Is there a way to generate a group of routes under an admin scope without having to create a new physical directory (like namespace requires you to). I know that in Rails 3 there is a scope method on the route mapper, and this appears to do what I want, but apparently it doesn't exist in Rails 2.3.x My goal is to have a route like this: "/admin/products" map to "app/controllers/products_controller, not "app/controllers/admin/products_controller". Is there any way to accomplish this in Rails 2.3.x?

    Hi, I am trying to start writing some simple jQuery plugins and for my first try if figured I would write something that does nothing else but apply .first & .last classes to passed elements. so for instance i want to ultimately be able to: $('li').firstnlast(); So that in this html structure: <ul> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> </ul> <ul> <li></li> <li></li> </ul> it would create the following: <ul> <li class="first"></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li class="last"></li> </ul> <ul> <li class="first"></li> <li class="last"></li> </ul> What i have written so far in my plugin is this: (function($) { $.fn.extend({ firstnlast: function() { $(this) .first() .addClass('first') .end() .last() .addClass('last'); } }); })(jQuery); However the above only returns this: <ul> <li class="first"></li> <li></li> <li></li> <li></li> </ul> <ul> <li></li> <li class="last"></li> </ul> It seems that passing only the li into the function it will look at all li elements on the entire page and then apply the classes to it. What I need to figure out is how i can basically make the function 'context aware' so that passing the above li into the function would apply the classes to those lis inside of the parent ul, not to the first and last li on the entire page.   • Rails3 and Paperclip

    Hi, I have migrated my application from rails 2.3 to rails3 and i have a problem with paperclip. I saw there was a branch for rails3 on paperclip git. So I added "gem 'paperclip', :git = 'git://github.com/thoughtbot/paperclip.git', :branch = 'rails3'" into the Gemfile and launch the command bundle install. Once paperclip installed, the upload worked fine but not the styles. I saw a hack to fix it. # in lib/paperclip/attachment.rb at line 293 def callback which #:nodoc: # replace this line... # instance.run_callbacks(which, @queued_for_write){|result,obj| result == false } # with this: instance.run_callbacks(which, @queued_for_write) end The styles are ok after that, but i'm not able to active the processor. My code is : has_attached_file :image, :default_url => "/images/nopicture.jpg", :styles => { :large => "800x600>", :cropped => Proc.new { |instance| "#{instance.width}x#{instance.height}>" }, :crop => "300x300>" }, :processors => [:cropper] My processor is located in RAILS_APP/lib/paperclip_processors/cropper.rb and contains : module Paperclip class Cropper < Thumbnail def transformation_command if crop_command and !skip_crop? crop_command + super.sub(/ -crop \S+/, '') else super end end def crop_command target = @attachment.instance trans = ""; trans << " -crop #{target.crop_w}x#{target.crop_h}+#{target.crop_x}+#{target.crop_y}" if target.cropping? trans << " -resize \"#{target.width}x#{target.height}\"" trans end def skip_crop? Is anybody has an idea to fix that ? For information my application works fine on rails 2.3.4.

  • CSS Background image in Redmine template arbitrarily not loading

    I`m in the process of building a template for Redmine (a project management system based on Ruby on Rails.) Ruby is running on a virtual server from a Bitnami.org installation package. The OS is Windows. The template essentially consists of a styles.css file. In that file, I have the following line: #header { padding: 0px; padding-top: 48px; background-color: #62DFFF; background-image: url(../images/bkg.jpg) background-position: center bottom; background-repeat: repeat-x; height:150px; } It's a header element with a background image. The problem: This background image arbitrarily appears and disappears when reloading. Say you reload ten times in twenty seconds; the image will appear in two instances, and be missing in the 18 others. I would have put this down to server problems, but the weird thing is that when it's missing, the request for the image doesn't appear in Firebug's net tab at all. Even if it were cached, the request should be there. Raw screenshots of the identical page on two reloads: I am 100% sure the CSS file does not change in between. I have examined both instances with Firebug and the CSS is identical. It happens in both Firefox and Chrome so it must be something basic I'm overlooking. What could be causing a browser not to load a resource at all? I have zero idea about Ruby nor Rails - getting Redmine running and customized is all I have ever had to do with this platform - so I don't really know where to look. Apache's, Mongrel's and Redmine's error logs look fine, though.
