• Set a custom favicon locally, that carries across the entire site.

  Is there a way to add a custom favicon to an App Tab? In the above thread, @admintech links to a great plugin for changing favicons which covers both the bookmarks folder and the address bar/tab bar icons. However, it still does not quite fully address what I was hoping to accomplish. I'd like to set an App Tab that has a customized icon, that stays the same in that tab no matter what I do there. Since the navigation within an App Tab is very restricted, the chosen favicon should always be relevant to whatever page is loaded in that tab. The Bookmark Favicon Changer has been effective in allowing me to use a custom favicon in the App Tab. But, the favicon only applies to the specific URL that was bookmarked. Any navigation done from that page will return the favicon to blank. Is there another plugin, or perhaps some special tweak to this plugin or the bookmark itself, that will allow me to make the favicon more persistent across the site?

• Can only access asp.net app on localhost

  I'm trying to get an asp.net application up on IIS on a Windows Server 2008 machine. I can hit the app from localhost, no problem. But I can't access the app using the server's domain name either locally or from another machine on the network. But here's the odd part. I can access a normal file on IIS using the domain name, both from a browser running on the server and from a browser running on another machine on the network. Here's a synopsis ("http" converted to "htp" below because I don't have enough points to have all these links in my message): From IE on the server itself: works htp://localhost/foo.htm works htp://localhost/App works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm dead htp://test.foo.com/App From IE on another machine (inside or outside my subnet): works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm dead htp://test.foo.com/App And when I say "dead" I mean the request times out. Any ideas?

• cannot at all find sql instance (while installing an asp.net app on IIS)

  So I'm really not a DBA, I'm an app dev. I had to install my asp.net mvc3 app on my client's(a large company) IIS6 + Win2k3 machine, with absolutely no help from their sysadmins. The final problem now is SQL Server 2008 r2, after figuring out how to create a login from windows, my app and sqlcmd.exe always complains it cannot find a sql server instance!! I have all the sql services (in services.msc) running to Log On as the local system. I can login fine with SQL Server Management Studio with Windows Auth. I created my database, my asp.net app needs/uses windows auth. But for the love of God, whatever I do my app always complains it cannot find the instance. (Also tried running SQL CMD and it complains of the same thing too!) My data base connection string looks like this: Data Source=machinename\username;Initial Catalog=myDataStore;Integrated Security=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True Machinename\user is the same thing that shows up on the sql server management studio login if I choose windows authentication right?

• How do you protect your <appid>.appspot.com domain from DDOS attack?

  If I want to use CloudFlare to help protect my GAE app via it's custom domain, I still am vulnerable to attacks directly on the .appspot.com domain. How do I mitigate that? I could force redirect appspot.com host requests, such as discussed here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1364733/block-requests-from-appspot-com-and-force-custom-domain-in-google-app-engine/ But I would still suffer the load of processing the redirect in my app. Are there any other solutions?

• Good TN3270 for MacOS? (Mac OS X Snow Leopard)

  I need a good TN3270 emulator for the Mac that supports file transfers to TSO/ISPF (IND$FILE) and 132 char wide screens. Min 132x27 (3278-model-5), better even user defined size like 132x43. So far I've tried TN3270 (no file transfer) and X3270. Besides being an X11 app, unfortunately x3270 does not handle oversize screens correctly and Mocha only has a TN5250. So, what's the TN3270 of choice on the Mac (or how at least do I get x3270 to handle 132xSomething in ISPF correctly, e.g. SDSF Job-Class list)?

  I have a nginx + passenger + single rails app setup in a Fedora server. My nginx.conf regarding my app looks something like this: server { listen 80; server_name myapp.mycompany.com; root /opt/apps/myapp_large_name/public; passenger_enabled on; client_max_body_size 4M; } So when I access myapp.mycompany.com.br it access to my rails app under /opt/apps/myapp_large_name/public. I want to be able to configure a subpath to access to another app (in this case, monit). I want something like that: myapp.mycompany.com.br/monit access the monit app. Is it possible?

• sudo port install cmake trouble (for MGTwitterEngine)

  I am following This Tutorial on installing MGTwitterEngine on my MAC osx 10.6.2. I am stuck on this step: sudo port install cmake it gives me the following error: dlopen(/opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/pextlib1.0/Pextlib.dylib, 10): no suitable image found. Did find: /opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/pextlib1.0/Pextlib.dylib: no matching architecture in universal wrapper while executing "load /opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/pextlib1.0/Pextlib.dylib" ("package ifneeded Pextlib 1.0" script) invoked from within "package require Pextlib 1.0" (file "/opt/local/bin/port" line 40) Rex-MacBook-Pro:~ Rex$ Thus, I cannot use TERMINAL to install YAJL to get my app to build. Help needed. P.S. In terminal preferences, Shells Open With is either /usr/bin/login or /bin/bash YAJL is supposedly installed at /Users/Rex I am using OSX 10.6.2

• Firefox 3.6.3 on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - symbolic link to command line binary doesn't work?

  I have Firefox 10.6.3 installed on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the DMG. I can run firefox from the terminal using /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin. However, if I create a symbolic link: sudo ln -s /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin /bin/firefox then it refuses to run, or at least display. When I issue "firefox" from the terminal, I can see the process in top, but never get the GUI to appear. :/ = ls -lr /bin/firefox lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 52 May 5 15:19 /bin/firefox - /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin Any ideas? • backspace character wiredness

  i wonder why backspace character in common linux terminals does not actually erase the characters, when printed (which normally works when typed).. this works as expected: $ echo -e "abc\b\b\bxyz" xyz (\b evaluates to backspace, can be inserted also as ctrl-v ctrl-h - rendered as ^H (0x08)) but when there are less characters after the backspaces, the strange behavior is revealed: $ echo -e "abc\b\b\bx" xbc is behaves like left arrow keys instead of backspace: $ echo -e "abc\e[D\e[D\e[Dx" xbc erase line back works normally: $ echo -e "abc\e[1Kx" x in fact, when i type ctrl-v <BS> in terminal, ^? (0x7f) is yielded instead of ^H, this is DEL ascii character, but ctrl-v <DEL> produces <ESC>[3~, but it is another story.. so can someone explain why printed backspace character does not erase the characters? (my environment it xterm linux and some other terminal emulators, $TERM == xterm, tried vt100, linux as well)

• Problem w/ Paperclip, MacPorts, ImageMagick & Snow Leopard

  I'm attempting to use ImageMagick along w/ Paperclip to handle the images on my rails app. The problem is whenever I try to upload an image I get the following in the terminal: [paperclip] An error was received while processing: #<Paperclip::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError: /var/folders/go/goZ833AaFaqyvv5RnLqQmE+++TM/-Tmp-/stream20110107-6356-1xfs9j1-0.jpg is not recognized by the 'identify' command.> I have added the following to my environments/development.rb file: Paperclip.options[:command_path] = "/usr/local/bin" If I try to interact w/ ImageMagick in the terminal by using "convert" or something similar I get: dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libltdl.7.dylib Referenced from: /usr/local/bin/convert Reason: Incompatible library version: convert requires version 10.0.0 or later, but libltdl.7.dylib provides version 9.0.0 Trace/BPT trap I've already tried updating everything w/ port but the problem still persists. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

• Connect to an existing process

  Hole thing is happening on the mac os x. Let's assume that I've opened an program by clicking on an .app icon. It's a python program with GUI which has a separate process that waits for a user input. But as I've opened it by clickin .app icon I dont have access to it's input as I would have if I opened it in Terminal. And the question is: How can I connect new Terminal window to this running program? I tried pipes but I'm not sure how to use them correctly. My guess was to find PID of the app that is running and then pipe to this program by giving a PID. But I have no idea how to do it. I hope you were able to understand what's the problem. Sorry for my weak english :)

• Technique to limit number of instances of our application under Terminal Server

  I'm looking for simple ways to monitor and limit the number of instances of our application under Terminal Server (2003 and 2008). The purpose of this restriction is to make sure we don't overload our servers. This is an internal administrative requirement - I am not looking for a licensing solution. The application in question is written in Python 2.6 (32-bit) but I'm happy to receive development tool agnostic answers. Although we are not using Citrix, I am happy to receive Citrix related ideas with the hope that I can use a similar technique with Terminal Server. Thank you, Malcolm

• Font for mac osx that is as readable and compact as the default xterm (X11) font.

  The font used in xterms is extremely compact yet readable. What font is that? The closest I've found that I can use in other other applications is DejaVu Sans Mono or Bitstream Vera Sans Mono. Those are as compact as xterms vertically but take up more space horizontally. I'd really like to switch from xterms to Terminal.app and this is the one thing holding me back. (I also think that font would be much better for emacs, xcode, or whatever editor.) ADDED: In Terminal.app you can adjust the character and line spacing for any font. Is this possible in other applications? I'm open to any other font that is as compact and readable as the xterm font. Dina looks really nice but it doesn't seem to work for Mac.

Is it possible to open the command prompt (and I guess any other terminal for other systems), and execute commands in the newly opened window? Currently what I have is this: Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime(); rt.exec(new String[]{"cmd.exe","/c","start"}); I've tried adding the next command after the "start", I've tried running another rt.exec containing my command, but I can't find a way to make it work. If it matters, I'm trying to run a command similar to this: java -flag -flag -cp terminal-based-program.jar

• Determining Terminal lines/cols via PHP CLI

  I know that it is quite easy to figure out a terminal's size parameters via the stty -a command. When using local CLI PHP scripts, there is no problem at all on grabbing that output via system() or so. But I am trying the same thing via a php script started from an ssh command. Sadly, all that stty ever returns is: stty: standard input: Invalid argument. The calling code is: exec('stty -a | head -n 1', $query); echo $query[0]; So the question is: If I can output to the terminal and read input from it (e.g. can fread() from STDIN and fwrite() to STDOUT in PHP, shouldn't stty also have valid STDIN and STDOUT?

• "tail -f" alternate which doesn't scroll the terminal window

  I want to check a file at continuous intervals for contents which keep changing. "tail -f" doesn't suffice as the file doesn't grow in size. I could use a simple while loop in bash to the same effect: while [ 1 ]; do cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state ; sleep 10; done It works, although it has the unwanted effect of scrolling my terminal window. So now I'm wondering, is there a linux/shell command that would display the output of this file without scrolling the terminal?

  On my machine, I have some software which takes commands in the terminal and returns a list of values. To run it, I have to type something like: pdv -t filename I am trying to run it as part of a python programme. When I run the following: os.system('pdv -t %s' % (epoch_name)) then I get the values that I desire returned to my terminal (where epoch_name is the variable name for the filename). But when I try to write the result to a file: os.system('pdv -t %s % "(epoch_name)" > 123.txt') the file 123.txt is produced but it is empty. I know that I am misplacing the " and/or ' characters, but I can't figure out where they should go. Any help would be gratefully received!

• Where is my app.config for SSIS?

  Sometimes when working with SSIS you need to add or change settings in the .NET application configuration file, which can be a bit confusing when you are building a SSIS package not an application. First of all lets review a couple of examples where you may need to do this. You are using referencing an assembly in a Script Task that uses Enterprise Library (aka EntLib), so you need to add the relevant configuration sections and settings, perhaps for the logging application block. You are using using Enterprise Library in a custom task or component, and again you need to add the relevant configuration sections and settings. You are using a web service with Microsoft Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 3.0 and hosting the proxy in SSIS, in an assembly used by your package, and need to add the configuration sections and settings. You need to change behaviours of the .NET framework which can be influenced by a configuration file, such as the System.Net.Mail default SMTP settings. Perhaps you wish to configure System.Net and the httpWebRequest header for parsing unsafe header (useUnsafeHeaderParsing), which will change the way the HTTP Connection manager behaves. You are consuming a WCF service and wish to specify the endpoint in configuration. There are no doubt plenty more examples but each of these requires us to identify the correct configuration file and and make the relevant changes. There are actually several configuration files, each used by a different execution host depending on how you are working with the SSIS package. The folders we need to look in will actually vary depending on the version of SQL Server as well as the processor architecture, but most are all what we can call the Binn folder. The SQL Server 2005 Binn folder is at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\, compared to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\ for SQL Server 2008. If you are on a 64-bit machine then you will see C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\ for the 32-bit executables and C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\ for 64-bit, so be sure to check all relevant locations. Of course SQL Server 2008 may have a C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\ on a 64-bit machine too. To recap, the version of SQL Server determines if you look in the 90 or 100 sub-folder under SQL Server in Program Files (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\nn\) . If you are running a 64-bit operating system then you will have two instances program files, C:\Program Files (x86)\ for 32-bit and  C:\Program Files\ for 64-bit. You may wish to check both depending on what you are doing, but this is covered more under each section below. There are a total of five specific configuration files that you may need to change, each one is detailed below: DTExec.exe.config DTExec.exe is the standalone command line tool used for executing SSIS packages, and therefore it is an execution host with an app.config file. e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe.config The file can be found in both the 32-bit and 64-bit Binn folders. Since the global inbox was introduced, the original StackCenter was rendered mostly useless and the need for a replacement was born. And now, I present StackCenter 2! • What happens to Google contacts in the People app in Windows 8

  In the People tile in Windows 8, you can connect to your different accounts, e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook, Google contacts. I have a lot of contact information in Google Contacts that I have carefully curated. I also have Facebook and LinkedIn contacts. I have already connected Facebook and LinkedIn contacts to the People app, and it seems to work ok. If I connect my Google Contacts to the People app too, what exactly will happen to the Google contacts? Will my Google contacts be modified in any way by the People app? Merged? Synced? (I understand that they will look merged in the People app, but I am wondering what will happen to the actual Google contacts, which I often use outside the People app) For instance: If a contact is in Facebook but is missing from Google Contacts, will it be created in Google contacts? If there is a picture for a person in both Facebook and Google Contacts, will the Google Contacts picture be overwritten? If I add a field, such as "Comments" to a contact in the People app, will that comment be written to the comment field for that contact in Google Contacts?
