  Hi, On my SSAS 2008 instance if a backup/restore of any database is made to/from a UNC path I get an error : The following system error occurred from a call to GetOverlappedResult for Physical file: '\server\share\OLAPDB.abf', Logical file: '' : Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. . Server: The operation has been cancelled. (Microsoft.AnalysisServices) Creating/copying/moving a file on the share of any size on the share using explorer or the command prompt works. • Why don't Direct2D and DirectWrite use traditional COM objects?

  I'm toying with a little 2D game engine in C# and decided to use Direct2D and DirectWrite for rendering. I know there's the Windows API Code Pack and SlimDX, but I'd really like to dig in and write an interface from scratch. I'm trying to do it without Managed C++, but Direct2D and DirectWrite don't appear to use traditional COM objects. They define interfaces that derive from IUnknown, but there appears to be no way to actually use them from C# with COM interop. There are IIDs in d2d1.h, but no CLSID. Of course, I'm really new to COM interop, so perhaps I'm just missing something. Can someone shed some light on this situation?

• Building TimeZone object in Java

  I build a Java TimeZone object using the TimeZone String like GMT-8,GMT,PST,EST etc. This did not consider whether the timezone is daylight saving enabled or not.Now there is a requirement to include this check and instead of giving the input as PDT or EDT the daylight saving is given as a seperate flag.I am not sure whether TimeZone has a direct method to change the dayLight saving property of that TimeZone. So if I get an input like PST and DaylightSaving as true then I have to change the string as PDT.Whats even worse is sometimes I will get inputs like GMT-8 or GMT-6 with Day light flag as either true or false. Is there a way out ? • Is the usage of Isolated Storage in Silverlight 3 a security concern

  I am using Silverlight 3 on my website. I have a Login Page for role based authentication, that routes users with different privileges to different parts of the website. I want to use something analogous to the Session Variables available in standard ASP.Net applications. I intend to use Isolated Storage to achieve this. But I am skeptical about security in this option, as the Isolated Storage exists on the client side, and can be manipulated on client side. I am new to the Isolated Storage concept and don't know about the security options provided by it in terms of Encryption and server-side validation etc. If any of you have used it or are aware of the security provided in this case, could you please shed some light on the same. • Using Nearest Neighbour Algorithm for image pattern recognition

  So I want to be able to recognise patterns in images (such as a number 4), I have been reading about different algorithms and I would really like to use the Nearest Neighbour algorithm, it looks simple and I do understand it based on this tutorial: http://people.revoledu.com/kardi/tutorial/KNN/KNN_Numerical-example.html Problem is, although I understand how to use it to fill in missing data sets, I don't understand how I could use it as a pattern recognition tool to aim in Image Shape Recognition. Could someone please shed some light as to how this algorithm could work for pattern recognition? I have seen tutorials using OpenCV, however I don't really want to use this library as I have the ability to do the pre-processing myself, and it seems silly that I would implement this library just for what should be a simple nearest neighbour algorithm.

• MVVM framework AND Prism 4?

  I just read this question. It has some nice answers, but they are over 1 year old, and a lot have changed in this space over the last year. Some of the most popular frameworks have come out in a new mayor release such as Prism and MVVM Light Toolkit. My question is somehow the same, but with one twist, I'm already using Prism 4.0 because of the region and module features. Prism 4.0 embraces MVVM, but I feel there are something which are "not lightweight", for instance interaction requests. So I'm thinking would it better to use another MVVM framework either as a substitute or a supplement for Prism 4.0?

• UISearchBar and UINavigationController

  I have an .xib file connected to a ViewController, which is init'ed as the root controller of an instance of UINavigationController in my appDelegate. In that view, I have a UISearchBar and a UITableView below it. When the view loads up, there's a navigationBar at the top, followed by a ~20 pixel gap, and then the UISearchBar, and the table beneath it: My problem is that when I enter the UISearchBar to type something, the navigation bar disappears (which is fine), but the search box is all screwy: I'm pretty new to this (a couple of weeks), so I'm not quite sure what's going on. Can anyone help me shed some light on this?

• A report writer for non-programmers?

  Hello, we are wanting for users to be able to write their own reports in our application. It is a web application. We don't care if they must download an application in order to create reports, but we need for them to be able to print off reports from the web in PDF format or similar. The report writer is to be used by non-programmers, or at best very light programmers(like the ones that make VBA macros and such). (the writer is not a core part of the program though. So if there is a learning curve, then that is acceptable to a certain extent) We were looking at Crystal Reports but it seems like it'll cost $7000 which is just way too much for right now(though our system is very flexible so could support it eventually). We are also looking at Fast Reports which seems pretty promising, but I'm not sure the report writer would be easy for non-programmers to grasp. Can someone recommend a good report writer for non programmers that won't break the bank?

• Passing parameters between interrupt handlers on a Cortex-M3 ...

  I'm building a light kernel for a Cortex-M3. From a high priority interrupt I'd like to invoke some code to run in a lower priority interrupt and pass some parameters along. I don't want to use a queue to post work to the lower priority interrupt. I just have a buffer and size to pass to it. In the proramming manual it says that the SVC interrupt handler is synchronous which presumably means that if you invoke it from an interrupt that's a lower priority than SVC's handler it gets called immediately (the upshot of this being that you can pass parameters to it as though it were a function call (a little like the BIOS calls in MS-DOS)). I'd like to do it the other way: passing parameters from a high priority interrupt to a lower priority one (at the moment I'm doing it by leaving the parameters in a fixed location in memory). What's the best way to do this (if at all possible)? Thanks,

  Hi, I'm using the Boxy jQuery plugin to open dialog windows and populating it through ajax. http://onehackoranother.com/projects/jquery/boxy/ Here's my code so far: $("a.create").click(function (e) { url = $(e.target).attr('href'); Boxy.load(url, {title:'Test'}); }); This opens up a dialog alright. However, if I click the link again, another dialog will open. How can I make it such that the previously opened Boxy dialog will come into focus? I only want one instance of this dialog. I tried assigning a variable to var ele = Boxy.load(); but the variable ele returns undefined... Alas, I can't make out much from the limited Boxy documentation available. Enabling the option modal: true would prevent the user from clicking on the link multiple times, but I don't want the overlay to show. Thanks for any light you can shed on this. -Lyon

• use of EntityManagerFactory causing duplicate primary key exceptions

  Hey guys, my goal is create an EntityManager using properties dependent on which database is in use. I've seen something like this done in all my Google searches(I made the code more basic for the purpose of this question): @PersistenceUnit private EntityManagerFactory emf; private EntityManager em; private Properties props; @PostConstruct public void createEntityManager(){ //if oracle set oracle properties else set postgres properties emf = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory("app-x"); em = emf.createEntityManager(props); } This works and I can load Oracle or Postgres properties successfully and I can Select from either database. HOWEVER, I am running into issues when doing INSERT statements. Whenever an INSERT is done I get a duplicate primary key exception.. every time!   I've come across, in passing, several suites of functions, widgets, frameworks, etc. that seek to produce a desktop like experience on the web. Most are JavaScript and CSS tools that handle web content on an emulation of the desktop-paradigmed UI, e.g. TreeView + Content == Explorer. Is there such a library nicely compatible with ASP.NET Forms without weeks of grief? I'll also settle for something similar, but instead of native ASP.NET, a library for any of the open source CMS products for ASP.NET. (Umbraco is at the top of my list, followed by mojoPortal. I aspire to the level of coding their creators easily demonstrate in the product. [PS, I don't want a 'desktop' ux per se, just light and simple dynamic layout for drag 'n drop, dock windows, a dock bar?.. and other fancy magic.

• UIView drawRect; class variables out of scope

  Short & sweet version of my last question in light of new information. I have a UIVIew with an init and a drawrect method (and another thread and a bunch of other stuff, but I'll keep it short & sweet). All of the class variables that I alloc and init in the -(id)init method are out of scope/nil/0x0 in the drawRect method, and I am unable to access them. For example; In the interface: NSObject* fred; In the implementation: -(id)init { if(self == [super init]) { fred = [[NSObject alloc] init]; } return self; } -(void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { NSLog(@"Fred is retained %i times",[fred retainCount]); //FAIL NSLog(@"But his variable is actually just pointing at uninitialised 0x0, so you're not reading this in the debugger because the application has crashed before it got here." } Should add that init IS being called before drawRect also. Anyone have any ideas?

  I enjoy using to Wikis to document all kind of stuff (recently I used MoinMoin, so I am used to that syntax). No I am looking for a more light weight solution, for documents were setting up a moinmoin server is to much hassle. What is the "easiest" way to render a .txt file in Wiki syntax. (for example by displaying it, or converting it to HTML). it should work on Linux, but the more platform in-dependent, the better. Maybe there is even a Javascript based solution?

  Was reading the response by Shaggy Frog to this post and was intrigued by the following line of code: NSLog(@"%@", [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@:%*s%5.2f", key, padding, " ", [object floatValue]]); I know string formatting is an age old art but I'm kinda doing the end around into Cocoa/Obj-C programming and skipped a few grades along the way. Where is a good (best) place to learn all the string formatting tricks allowed in NSString's stringWithFormat? I'm familiar with Apple's String Format Specifiers page but from what I can tell it doesn't shed light on whatever is happening with %*s or the %5.2f (not to mention the 3 apparent placeholders followed by 4 arguments) above?!?

  For reasons beyond my control, I'm being tasked with Ruby web development that does NOT use Rails or really any other heavyweight framework such as Merb. I'm wondering if anybody else has encountered this and can recommend best practices or resources that describe best practices for such a problem. I'd like to avoid the dreaded out.print('<td class="foo">'+some_data+'</td>') style of web development. A coworker has suggested Rack as a light framework but the documentation is sketchy and it seems unproven in the market.

  Firstly: I understand what WSGI is and how to use it I understand what "other" methods (Apache mod-python, fcgi, et al) are, and how to use them I understand their practical differences What I don't understand is how each of the various "other" methods work compared to something like UWSGI, behind the scenes. Does your server (Nginx, etc) route the request to your WSGI application and UWSGI creates a new Python interpreter for each request routed to it? How much different is is from the other more traditional / monkey patched methods is WSGI (aside from the different, easier Python interface that WSGI offers)? What light bulb moment am I missing?

I am creating the .vcs file dynamically when clicked on a hyperlink. • adding an existing implementation file to an xcode project won't work

  As I write most of my code using MacVIM, I need to add the new files to the XCode project in order to compile them into the executable. Today however I encoutered an implementation file (.m) wich XCode won't allow to be added. It appears light gray the appropriate finder window as if it were already included in the project, but when I try to build, I get a linker error, stating that the symbol defined this implementation file could not be found. The corresponding header file could be added without problems. Any idea what could have caused this problem? Btw. I deleted a former version of the same file from the "Classes" tree before, as well as many others wich were successfully re-added. Thanks in advance.

  Hi Team, I have a simple WCF service, self hosting and a .net client. I am generating a proxy using svcutil. When I add the proxy to the client it asks me to add System.ServiceModel.dll. Well, I can add it since it is a test scenario and I am working in .Net platform. • Any way to remove IEs black border around submit button in active forms?

  I am implementing a design that uses custom styled submit-buttons. They are quite simply light grey buttons with a slightly darker outer border: input.button { background: #eee; border: 1px solid #ccc; } This looks just right in Firefox, Safari and Opera. The problem is with Internet Explorer, both 6 and 7. Since the form is the first one on the page, it's counted as the main form - and thus active from the get go. The first submit button in the active form receives a solid black border in IE, to mark it as the main action. If I turn off borders, then the black extra border in IE goes away too. I am looking for a way to keep my normal borders, but remove the outline.

• Soft Shadows in Raytracing 3D to 2D

  Hello: I wish to implement soft shadows produced by area lights in my raytracer. I'm having trouble generating the random samples. So I have a scene in which I have an area light (represented as a circle) whose world (x,y,z) coordinates of the center are given, the radius is given, the normal of the plane on which the circle lies is given, as well as the color and attenuation factors. The sampling scheme I wish to use is the following: generate samples on the quadrilateral that encompasses the circle and discard points outside the circle until the required number of samples within the circle have been found. I'm having trouble understanding how I can transform the 3D coordinates of the center of the circle to its 2D representation (I don't think I can assume that the projection of the circle is on the x-y axis and thus just get rid of the z-component). I think the plane normal information should be used but I'm not sure how. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
