• Recommendations with hierarchical data on non-relational databases?

  I'm developing an web application that uses a non-relational database as a backend (django-nonrel + AppEngine). I need to store some hierarchical data (projects/subproject_1/subproject_N/tasks), and I'm wondering which pattern should I use. For now I thought of: Adjacency List (store the item's parent id) Nested sets (store left and right values for the item) In my case, the depth of nesting for a normal user will not exceed 4-5 levels. Also, on the UI, I would like to have a pagination for the items on the first level, to avoid to load too many items at the first page load. From what I understand so far, nested sets are great when the hierarchy is used more for displaying. Adjacency lists are great when editing on the tree is done often. In my case I guess I need the displaying more than the editing (when using nested sets, even if the display would work great, the above pagination could complicate things on editing). Do you have any thoughts and advice, based on your experience with the non-relational databases?

  Hi All, I have created a asp.net website, that we are going to deploy at India. All client of this website would be from SWEDEN. This site have option (last login date time) at user's dashboard after successfull login. Now my problem is that if application is deploy at India and user loggedin from SWEDEN then user is able to show only server date time which is of India. My Steps are as following 1. User logged into site first time at 10 AM(server time), surfing starts... 2. Logged out at 10:30 (server time) 3. Application store server datetime in database. 4. Next time user come, application will store same date and time from database as last loggin datetime. How can i store SWEDEN date time in database when user logged out from site, it will in future grow to other country also. Please help?

• How prevent anyone from stealing my shared_ptr?

  So, I use boost::shared_ptr for all the various reference-counting benefits it provides -- reference counting for starters, obviously, but also the ability to copy, assign, and therefore store in STL Containers. The problem is, if I pass it to just one "malicious" function or object, the object can save the ptr and then I'll never be able to de-allocate it without the foreign function or object nicely relinquishing its ownership. Ultimately, I try to keep object ownership explicit. I accomplish this by having the owner keep the only shared_ptr to the object, and "guest" objects only store weak_ptrs to the object. I really don't want the "shared" part of shared_ptr, but I'm required to use shared_ptr in order to make weak_ptrs. I want to use scoped_ptr, but it's extremely limited since you can't copy it. You can't store it in a container, you can't lend out weak_ptrs from it, and you can't transfer ownership to a new manager. What's the solution?

  I'm trying to store a blooming season in month for each tree in SQLite3. Currently I had the field "month" then I store the month name in the field. For example Tree Name Month Tree1 Jan,Feb,Mar Tree2 Nov,Dec,Jan Tree3 Jan,Feb,Mar,Apr,May,Jun,Jul,Aug,Sep,Oct,Nov,Dec Tree4 Mar,Apr,Nov,Dec Tree5 Jan,Feb,Mar,Apr I'm not sure if this is the best way to store it, Any recommendation is appreciate. Secondly, I need to perform a query where I enter in the month and it should return me the tree name that match the search criteria. For example If I search for "Jan" the result should be Tree1,Tree2,Tree3,Tree5 "Jan,Feb,Mar" the result should be Tree1,Tree3,Tree5 "Jan,Feb,Mar,Apr" the result should be Tree5 "Sep,Oct,Nov,Dec" the result should be none Which SQL query do I have to use in order to obtain the above result?   I'm trying to use a function to count the number of unique cells in a spreadsheet that, at the same time, meet multiple criteria. Given the following example: A B C QUANT STORE# PRODUCT 1 75012 banana 5 orange 6 56089 orange 3 89247 orange 7 45321 orange 2 apple 4 45321 apple In the example above, I need to know how many unique stores with a valid STORE# have received oranges OR apples. In the case above, the result should be 3 (stores 56089, 89247 and 45321). This is how I started to try solving the problem: =SUM(IF(FREQUENCY(B2:B9,B2:B9)>0,1)) The above formula will yield the number of unique stores with a valid store#, but not just the ones that have received oranges or bananas. How can I add that extra criteria?

• Do bit operations cause programs to run slower?

  I'm dealing with a problem which needs to work with a lot of data. Currently its values are represented as an unsigned int. I know that real values do not exceed a limit of 1000. Questions I can use unsigned short to store it. An upside to this is that it'll use less storage space to store the value. Will performance suffer? If I decided to store data as short but all the calling functions use int, it's recognized that I need to convert between these datatypes when storing or extracting values. Will performance suffer? Will the loss in performance be dramatic? If I decided to not use short but just 10 bits packed into an array of unsigned int. What will happen in this case comparing with previous ones?

• Magento: Configurable product options not showing on a view page?

  I have multi-store Magento system and strange things happen when i try to see a configurable product on my main store - the options select lists don't show up at all! And that is the case for the 95% of the products on the main store. But on the other stores it works fine?! I can't see what am I doing wrong. All my products are configurable, all have set simple products with options attached to them, all are set to be visible on all stores (WebsiteIds attribute), all are enabled on all stores, all simple products are in stock and have some stock quantity set. I think if I've done something wrong it would be like that on all stores, not just the main one. I'm totally clueless, please help. • How can I select all records between two dates without using date fields?

  Hi, I have a MySQL DB and I need to be able to store dates earlier then 1970 - in my case, as early as 0 AD and earlier too, so I need a custom way to store dates. I have thought to use this format: Year - int(6) | Month -int(2) | day - int (2) | time - time | AD tinyint (1) | mya - int (11) But when it comes to actually using data in this format it becomes difficult. For example, if I want to get all records between two dates it would be like (pseudocode not SQL): get all where year between minYear and maxYear if year == minYear, month = minMonth if year == maxYear, month <= maxMonth if month == minMonth, day = minDay if month == maxMonth, day <= maxDay if day == minDay, time = minTime if day == maxDay, time <= maxTime or something, which seems like a right pain. I could store seconds before/after 0 AD, but that would take up way too much data! 2010 (EDIT: 2011) = 6.4 billion seconds since 0 AD. Does anybody have any ideas for this problem?

  Hi, folks. I have some problems with zend routes I have shops controller. It has 3 actions(for now): index - lists all of shops using paginator(so I have /shops/?page=2) show - shows concrete shop (show/Apple+store) search - shows search form So now I need to make routing for that. I have followin routes 'shop', new Zend_Controller_Router_Route ('/shops/:title',array('controller' = 'shops', 'action' = 'show'),array('title' = '/^(?!search$).+$/')) 'search_shops',new Zend_Controller_Router_Route_Static ('/shop/search',array('controller' = 'shops', 'action' = 'show')) but when i try to go /shops/Apple+store it says, that there is no Apple store action. If I ommit regexp part on shop route, I can't go to search. What am I doing wrong?

Here is some sample code... 0 1 a 1 2 b 2 c 3 1 10 begin 11 . load a, subtract b and offset by -1 for jump+ 11 load M(0) 12 sub M(1) 13 sub M(3) 14 halt Using c++, I need to be able to read these lines and store them in a "memory register" class that I already have constructed... For example, the first line would need to store "1 a" in register zero. How can I parse out the number at the line beginning and then store the rest as a string? I have setup storage using a class that is called using mem.set(int, string);. int is the memory location at the beginning of the line and string is the stored instruction.

• Large strings: Text files or SQL DB?

  I am coding a forum system using PHP. I am currently storing a threads ID, title, author, views and other attributes in an SQL database and then storing the thread body (the HTML and BBcode) in text files inside a folder named after the thread ID. In practise it's really simple to grab the database values then just grab the thread body from the text file, but I was wondering if this is the 'proper way'? I have personally no problems doing this but if it turns out it is massively inefficient and I should instead store both the thread body HTML and BBcode in the database instead then I will change. However, to me it seems wrong to store such a (very possibly) huge string of multi-line text along with lots of different characters in a database - I was taught that databases are more for short field 'values' rather than website content. I would just like a definitive answer to this because it's been bugging me for ages as to wherever I’ve been doing it properly. Does anyone know how popular forum systems store threads?

  First off, I'm sorry if this shows no code which is not what Stack Overflow is about..But I have no clue where to go on this. I have a basic CMS I made, and I am trying to distribute it. I want to make it so that upon going to /cms/install for example, they set the database info, and different info to integrate into the CMS. Now my issue is, what would be the best method to allow the user to store that database info? A cookie seems to not be the right way..Could I store database info inside of a database? Not too sure where to go on this. More or less. What is the best way to temporarily store the database information the user gave before arrival of the full CMS.

• Help trying to get two-finger scrolling to work on Asus UL80VT

  Multi-touch works fine on Windows 7 with: two-fingers scroll vertical and horizontally, two-finger tap for middle click, and three-finger tap for right click. However with Ubuntu, I've never been able to get multi-touch to "save" and work, I was able to get it to work a few times but after restarting - it would just reset back. I have the settings for two-finger scrolling on: Mouse and Touchpad Touchpad Two-finger scrolling (selected) Enable horizontal scrolling (ticked) The cursor stops moving when I try to scroll with two fingers, but it doesn't actually scroll the page. When I perform xinput list, I get: Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)] ? Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)] ? ETPS/2 Elantech ETF0401 id=13 [slave pointer (2)] I've tried to install some 'synaptics-dkms' bug-fix (from a few years back) but that didn't work, so I removed that.   I'm trying to implement a voxel engine in C++ using OpenGL, and I've been working on the rendering of the world. In order to render, I have a 3D array of uint16's that hold that id of the block at the point. I also have a 3D array of uint8's that I am using to store the visibility data for that point, where each bit represents if a face is visible. I have it so the blocks render and all of the proper faces are hidden if needed, but all of the blocks are offset by a power of 2 from where they are stored in the array. So the block at [0][0][0] is rendered at (0, 0, 0), and the block at 11 is rendered at (1, 1, 1), but the block at [2][2][2] is rendered at (4, 4, 4) and the block at [3][3][3] is rendered at (8, 8, 8), and so on and so forth. This is the result of drawing the above situation: I'm still a little new to the more advanced concepts of C++, like triple pointers, which I'm using for the 3D array, so I think the error is somewhere in there. • Best way to create a SPARQL endpoint for a RDBMS (MySQL database)

  I am doing (want to do) some experiments with Linked Open Datasets particularly those put out by governments. I have a RDBMS (more specifically MySQL). I designed it with semantic web ideas in mind i.e. I have a information stored as objects, predicates and classes which define objects. In turn all objects are related to each other though statements of the form subject -- predicate -- object (where the subjects are from the objects table). I want to be able to query other RDF triple stores from my application and let other triple stores query my data. Is it possible to "set something up" so that this is possible? I have looked at Jena. Using Jena seems to mean I have to it as a storage application rather than MySQL - the only problem with this is that I include a new concept called a category (which I don't think is part of the semantic web languages). I will use categories to help with displaying information (they don't have any other meaning) but using Jena seems to mean that I can't organise predicates under categories for more convenient viewing. I am using Java so a JAVA API is preferred. It's also possible I misunderstood the purpose of Jena, and maybe that can be of use, but I am not sure how. I am sure four days from now this question will seem rather silly, but at the moment I am somewhat confused about how to proceed.

• Could I do this blind relative to absolute path conversion (for perforce depot paths) better?

  I need to "blindly" (i.e. without access to the filesystem, in this case the source control server) convert some relative paths to absolute paths. So I'm playing with dotdots and indices. For those that are curious I have a log file produced by someone else's tool that sometimes outputs relative paths, and for performance reasons I don't want to access the source control server where the paths are located to check if they're valid and more easily convert them to their absolute path equivalents. I've gone through a number of (probably foolish) iterations trying to get it to work - mostly a few variations of iterating over the array of folders and trying delete_at(index) and delete_at(index-1) but my index kept incrementing while I was deleting elements of the array out from under myself, which didn't work for cases with multiple dotdots. Any tips on improving it in general or specifically the lack of non-consecutive dotdot support would be welcome. Currently this is working with my limited examples, but I think it could be improved. It can't handle non-consecutive '..' directories, and I am probably doing a lot of wasteful (and error-prone) things that I probably don't need to do because I'm a bit of a hack. I've found a lot of examples of converting other types of relative paths using other languages, but none of them seemed to fit my situation.
