• Line numbering in Visual Studio

  Why doesn't VS have any sort of line numbering? Is there any way to enable it, or a plugin for it? I know, the number of lines of code in a program doesn't matter, but sometimes it is nice to know how long a program is, or what line number something is for reference. I can't seem to find that as an option anywhere, to my surprise. Thanks for the help! This is Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. (if you have read my older questions, I've been using 2008 Express until now.)

• Reference non-GAC version of DLL in Visual Studio 2010

  This is similar to Add Non-GAC reference to project but the solutions presented there don't seem to help. I have a WinForms UI Library (Krypton from ComponentFactory) installed in the GAC. There's a bug I want to track down in that library, so I added the source code to my solution, removed the old references from my WinForms project to Krypton DLLs, added them back as a project references, ensured Copy Local is set to true, double-checked that the path (on reference properties tab) points to my local project, and... ...the GAC version is still being used while debugging. I cannot set a breakpoint in the Krypton source, Debugger.Break() or other code changes to not execute, and when I start the Visual Studio 2010 debugger, I see a Loading from ... GAC_MISL message relating to the Krypton DLLs flash by in the VS 2010 status bar. The DLLs are not copied to the WinForm's Debug folder. How can I reference the "project" version of the files while debugging while leaving them registered in the GAC?

• Visual Studio Symbols stored/loaded from wrong place

  Hello, I'm rather new to symbol servers and I've been experimenting with them and Visual Studio 2008 running Windows XP(SP3). I've encountered a wierd problem as my symbols are not being cached locally in the directory I've specified all the time. The possible reasons I have found for this si that the symbols(.pdb's) are being written to VS's IDE directory and/or the symbols are somehow being written in with the .exe, which I find odd since it should be read only. The symbols are being sent to the "server" I've specified so that part of the system shouldn't be the problem. Has anyone else had this type of issue before and/or maybe a solution to this problem? • Viewing array of pointers to structures in Visual Studio in the debugger

  I'm having a problem displaying the contents of a pointer array with its contents in the debugger. If I just add the pointer to the watch only the fist entry is visible. But if I add the length to it the debugger assumes that I have something like array[length][length]. Picture The first entry is the broken one, looks the same with ,2 or with any ,2 x. The second one is what I would like to see, but for more entries. Edit: The two entries displayed as [x][1] are invalid. I'm using VS 2005 but I think I had this problem on 2008 as well. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

For instance- Crtl-R,Ctrl-W - show white spaces. essential for editing python build scripts. Under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\Text Editor" Create a String called Guides with the value "RGB(255,0,0), 80" to have a red line at column 80 in the text editor. What other hidden features have you stumbled upon?

• Visual Studio 2010 ClickOnce prerequisites from same location

  I'm using clickonce publishing and want to require .net 3.5 framework and others as prerequisites. I have selected the option to download the prerequisites from same folder as my app. I've also placed the .net 3.5 redistributable exe in the folder on the server where the app will be published. I publish by FTP over the internet to the server where the users are. However, VS will not let me publish saying it can't find the prerequisites on disk. Does this mean I have to have the prerequisites installed somewhere on my developer machine and that those files will all be uploaded by FTP to the server everytime I publish a new version to the server? That would be a huge amount of data to upload over my slow DSL upload link. Any insight?

• How can I add a VS 2010 .Net 4.0 build agent to TFS 2008

  My company has two development teams using TFS 2008. My team would like to migrate our .Net 3.5 app to the .Net 4.0 framework, but the company is not ready to upgrade TFS to TFS 2010. Can we still use TFS 2008's team build system but with a Visual Studio 2010 solution/project structure that targets the .Net 4.0 framework? I am thinking we would need to add a new build agent to TFS 2008 that would have VS 2010 installed. But I am not finding any information on how to do this. Is this possible? Are there any articles explaining how to do this?

• Visual Studio Config File Editor - Not Formatting

  Hi All, My VS 2008 seems to be acting a bit weird and the solution is eluding me. The problem is that if I open a config file; app.config or web.config, this looks and behaves as a plain text document. I have no formatting, no coloring, no intellisense and no collapsible or expandable regions. I have reset all setting and restored default file associations. If I go into the setting menu, Text Editor, XML, formatting I see an error "An error occurred loading this property page" Has any one seen this before and have you go a solution. Thanks

• "Error opening associated documents" message when loading VS

  When loading up a solution in VS2008 I get this message: An error was encountered while opening associated documents the last time this solution was loaded. Document load is being skipped during this solution load in order to avoid that error. It shut down immediately the first time I opened it. The next time I opened it, VS popped up a message box but did not shut down at first; however, it did shut down when I clicked a usercontrol or ASPX page. How can I find which document is causing the problem? Thanks...

• Visual Studio 2008 awful performance

  Hi, I have ported a piece of C++ code, that works out of core, from Linux(Ubuntu) to Windows(Vista) and I realized that it works about 50times slower on VS2008! I removed all the out of core parts and now I just have a piece of code that has nothing to do with the hard disk. I set compiler parameters to O2 in Project Properties but still get about 10times slower than g++ in linux! Does anybody have an idea why it is this much slower under VS?   Is there any way to write a VS Add-In or something else that would allow me to be able to link files to an ASPX page in ASP.NET. My goal is to be able to have this extra file created with every ASPX page, and then use a custom MS Build Task to analyze those files and do some stuff. So for example, when I created "MyPage.aspx", I'd actually see these files on disk... MyPage.aspx MyPage.aspx.cs MyPage.aspx.designer.cs MyPage.aspx.MyExtension I want to be able to see the file when I expand a page and be able to edit the file. Possible?

  Really Visual Studio can be so annoying sometimes... I did nothing else than deleting 3 UserControls in a folder. Since that time I get a error message I do not get rid of. Whatever I do I can not build successfully my project. I did not touch the SchoolAdministrationUC.xaml file , but I deleted 3 other UserControls also located in the path: TBM\View\SchoolclassAdministration\ Error message from VS: Error 1 The type or namespacename "SchoolclassAdministration" is in namespace "TBM.View" not available. (missing assembly reference?) E:\TBM\obj\x86\Debug\View\SchoolclassAdministration\SchoolAdministrationUC.g.cs 33 16 TBM How do I get rid of error ?

• Script.PostDeployment.sql not executing in CI build VS 2010

  I have a database project in VS 2010 (SQL 2008). The local Deploy Solution action works and executes all of the SQL in the Script.PostDeployment.sql file. When I check changes in, the Build Definition for the continuous integration server executes. The database is deployed into the CI environment, but the PostDeployment script doesn't get executed. I wasn't able to find anything specific to this particular scenario. I also expect I'll need to provide additional information unless this is a trivial problem that I missed somewhere. Additional Information: The build is executing vsdbcmd.exe to deploy. The deployment manifest references the PostDeployment.sql file and it's present in the path with the rest of the files. • DLL response is too slow in Visual Studio [Resolved]

  I use a 3rd party DLL in my VB.NET project (VS2005) that responds to slow and give wrong values in debug mode. In run-time mode everything works as expected. I do understand that there are something going on in the debug mode which makes the DLL communication slow. This behavior makes it hard to debug the application correctly. Is there any way to force VS to communicate with the DLL in "run-time" mode during debugging but let the rest of the project be in control of the debugger? I found a setting that resolved my issue: Project Properties Debug Enable Debuggers select "Enable unmanaged code debugging". Now the DLL communication flowed smoothly. The DLL I use is a middleware between my app and a USB device. There is no Debug/Release version of the DLL.

  I find that I tend to write long source files in F#. Some open source projects in F# also have long source files, e.g. FPersec and F# for excel. So it would be very helpful if code folding (even very limited support) is available in VS for F#. E.g. in a module, we can fold out functions that are stable, only leave functions that are subject to change unfold. Is this feature easy to be supported, e.g. by a third party vendor?

• VS 2010 / Resharper 5 Mouse Behavior

  After upgrading to the above configuration I notice that 1) CTRL-Click on a type highlights the type but doesn't take me to the declaration, 2) Clicking on some closure (ie, like a method) toggles whether it's expanded or collapsed. Since these are both mouse related tasks I figure there is some setting in either VS or R# that I need to change, but I sure can't figure out what it is. Anybody know?   Hello, My solution has a library project which needs a special environment to be built (lots of external libraries and tools)... but it is not vital to our application. We'd like to avoid installing these tools when not necessary (most of our developers work on other parts of code). We have created another project which has the same API, but has an empty implementation and is compilable without those external tools. I'd like to be able to easily switch between those projects and still get all the references in other projects correct. I don't know VS/MSBuild very well, but willing to learn whatever is necessary. Is it possible? I am looking for ideas... We're using Subversion, and solutions involving some hacks inside VCS are also welcome.

  I am attempting to collaborate on a C#/WPF project with another developer remotely via e-mail; and although the code compiles perfectly when it leaves, my collaborator has not been able to compile the code on his side. We are both using VS 2008 Version 9. This is the first time trying to work with someone else on an application and I was hoping that someone would advise me if there are any suggestions to obtain and ensure compatibility between the two of us? Additionally, is there a recommended procedure to prepare the solution for shipment (ie. just zip up the solution folder? export the application? etc.)? Thanks very much.

  I am debugging a project and Visual Studio stops debugging and closes the program on the following line with no exceptions or error messages (I have enabled notifications for any thrown exceptions in options): var query = Session.Linq<RSS>() .Where(x => x.LastRetrieved <= date || x.LastRetrieved == null) .Where(x => x.Moderated); Where Session.Linq refers to LINQ2NHibernate. Anyway, the question is: what are the possible reasons for such behavior? Tested both on VS 2010 and 2008 - they behave identically just falling out of debugging.

  In Visual Studio 2008 project properties, Application tab, I can set the Output type to Windows Application, Console Application, or Class Library. I have a project that I want to build as a stand-alone tool (console app) and be available to a couple other tools I'm working on as a class library. The VS GUI only lets me choose one or the other, and building the proj twice all the time is inconvenient. How can I set it up to build both output types in a single build job? Do I write some custom MSBuild .targets file or what?

  I'm going through the problem of setting up a new computer and I'm having a problem with VS 2005. Whenever I start debugging all the windows (properties, watch, errorlist, stack, ...) pop up all over the place undocked. At this point I've tried docking them and closing them. When I stop debugging more windows pop up all undocked. This keeps happening over and over and over... I've tried closing and docking them but they keep popping out. Wasn't sure how to google this and my patience has grown thin with this whole process of moving to a new comp. Sincerely, Frustrated

  We have a VS 2010 solution that includes a few class library projects, a SQL Server 2008 database project and a Wix setup project. We are trying to get to a point where the following happens in the order specified: Build the class library projects and the database project Deploy the database project to generate the deploy .sql script Build the Wix setup project. The reason for the desired order is that the setup project requires the deployment .sql scripts as it will use these to generate/update the database on the machine that the msi is run. It seems that there is no way within a Visual Studio solution file to create this type of build/deploy/build order. Is this correct? Thanks

• In Visual Studio 2010, intellisense isn't showing for long method signatures

  The problem is exactly as asked in the question title. When I'm typing in the text editor and referencing a public method that has a long signature (lots of parameters, usually 10 or more) the intellisense just stops working. It will sometimes flicker; other times it will not show at all. Only seen this happen with C#, but I don't use anything else. It might happen in VB too. Don't know. Anyone else seeing this? I've Googled for an hour but can't seem to iron it out. I've restarted VS, rebooted the machine, enabled/disabled intellisense in Tools - Options. NOTHING works.

  Looking for a component, dll, etc, for OCR for a VB.NET program. Using VS PRO 2008. The source is a bunch of small png images, and I am just getting a price out of them. Very simple. Tried tessnet2, but could not get png to work. Don't mind commercial, but not too expensive - maybe about $100. Want something simple to use and preferably with support if needed.
