• Compressing a web service response for jQuery

  I'm attempting to gzip a JSON response from an ASMX web service to be consumed on the client-side by jQuery.   A web based web browser. Sounds silly right? Here's a use case. All comments about what could go wrong, and if anyone has tried and failed at this, very much wanted User goes to www.theBrowser.com and logs in with credentials specific to theBrowser.com. User tells theBrowser what their username and password for various sites are User goes to theBrowser.com/?uri=somesite.com theBrowser sends off the http request with User's log in details, then sends the http response back to User. This lets theBrowser do weird and wonderful functions like change colours / style sheets / etc. to every site that gets passed through it. From a technical stand point, storing username and password and passing them along is not a challenge for one user, but if there were a few, I'd have to use some kind of server based browser software to store a session per user logged in at theBrowser.com. How could I do that? Will I have to start from scratch? Obviously privacy and security are issues. Would theBrowser.com be too great a risk, even if users are fully warned? Cheers, Dave

  A web application I'm helping to develop is faced with a well-known problem: we want to be able to let users know of various events and so forth that can occur at any time, essentially at random, and update their view accordingly. Essentially, we need to allow the server to push requests to individual clients, as opposed to the client asking the server. I understand that WebSockets are an effort to address the problem; however, after a bit of looking around into them, I understand that a) very few web browsers currently offer native websocket support; b) to get around this, you either use flash sockets or some sort of AJAX long-polling; c) a special websockets server must be used. Now, we want to offer our service without Flash. And any sort of servers must have some sort of load-balancing capabilities, or at least some software that can do load balancing for them. As of 2008, everyone was saying that Comet-based solutions (e.g., Bayeux) were the way to go for these sort of situations. However, the various protocols seem to have not had much work put into them since then—which leads (finally) to the question. Is Bayeux-flavored Comet still the right tool for jobs like this? If not, what is?

• Fastest Method to Learn Web Design for a Developer

  I am a Web developer and in my projects I have noticed that my weakest point is not being good at the front-end design. Relying on other designers can be annoying if they are not able to produce as quickly as I want. My perspective on HTML/CSS is that it is basically a big hack that amazingly works. There are too many CSS and browser specific bugs/quirks to learn and remember them all without spending extreme amounts of time trying to untangle everything. Is there a fast track route to getting CSS into my brain? I have looked at some CSS books, but to me they really read as long lists of how to render things correctly in IE6 and how to make corners rounded. (Seriously why does it require so many tricks to make a sharp corner round? On any platform but the Web this would be called a major oversight.) Does there exist something that does the analogous to CSS that jQuery does for JavaScript? Using jQuery you don't need to know JavaScript well to make things that work. I am not interested in learning why IE6 does things in weird ways because I don't care about supporting it at all. I am more interested in a method of learning how to use CSS to do what I want without spending hours and hours reading obscure blogs.

• Using hg repository as web site

  This is somewhat related to my security question here. Is it a bad idea to use an hg / mercurial repository for a live website? If so, why? Furthermore, we have dev, test and production installations of our website, like dev.example.com, test.example.com and www.example.com. If it's a bad idea to use a repository for a live/production website, would it be OK to use an hg repository for the dev and test sites? I'm also concerned about ease of deployment. We have technical and less technical co-workers who will be working with the site. The technical guys (software engineers) won't have any problem working with the command line or TortoiseHG. I'm more concerned about the less technical guys (web designers). They won't be comfortable working on the command line, and may even find TortoiseHG daunting. These guys mostly upload .css files and images to the server. I'd like for these files (at least the .css files) to be under version control, but I want this to be as transparent as possible for the non technical guys. What's the best way to achieve this? Edit: Our 'site' is actually a multi-site CMS setup with a main repository and several subrepositories. Mock-up of the repository structure: /root [main repository containing core files and subrepositories] /modules [modules subrepository] /sites/global [subrepository for global .css and .php files] /sites/site1 [site1 subrepository] ... /sites/siteN [siteN subrepository] Software engineers would work in the root, modules and sites/global repositories. Less technical guys (web designers) would work only in the site1 ... siteN subrepositories.

• Web Service Client in JBOSS 5.1 with JDK6

I am trying to use jdk6 to run JBOSS 5.1, and I downloaded the JDK6 version of JBOSS 5.1. This works fine and my EAR application deploys fine. However, when I want to run a web service client with code like this: public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { System.out.println("creating the web service client..."); TestClient client = new TestClient("http://localhost:8080/tc_test_project-tc_test_project/TestBean?wsdl"); Test service = client.getTestPort(); System.out.println("calling service.retrieveAll() using the service client"); List<TestEntity> list = service.retrieveAll(); System.out.println("the number of elements in list retrieved using the client is " + list.size()); } I get the following exception: javax.xml.ws.WebServiceException: java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: setProperty must be overridden by all subclasses of SOAPMessage at org.jboss.ws.core.jaxws.client.ClientImpl.handleRemoteException(ClientImpl.java:396) at org.jboss.ws.core.jaxws.client.ClientImpl.invoke(ClientImpl.java:302) at org.jboss.ws.core.jaxws.client.ClientProxy.invoke(ClientProxy.java:170) at org.jboss.ws.core.jaxws.client.ClientProxy.invoke(ClientProxy.java:150) Now, here's the really interesting part. If I change the JDK that my the code above is running under from JDK6 to JDK5, the exception above goes away! It's really strange. The only way I found for the code above to run under JDK6 was to take the JBOSS_HOME/lib/endorsed folder and copy it to JDK6_HOME/lib. This seems like it shouldn't be necessary, but it is. Is there any other way to make this work other than using the workaround I just described?

• Which Java Framework is best suited for a web application with reusable content/behavior

  I come from a .NET background and need to do a web project in Java. I have read a bit on all the different Java web frameworks out there: JSF, Stripes, Wicket, Tapestry etc. But I would like to hear from people with real-life expertise with these frameworks. Of course I want a framework that is up to date, supports AJAX, is cool and so on, but one of my main criteria is the ability to somehow create reusable components / tags. The customer needs to be able to move tags/components around without too much problem in order to customize it for their specific needs. In ASP.NET Webforms I would use custom controls and user controls for this, and in ASP.NET MVC I would use user controls as well as home made custom controls. So what Java frameworks excel in this? My own superficial research seems to conclude that JSF supports some kind of custom controls (Bear in mind i am not only talking about layout reuse, but also behavior reuse, so if for example the customer / client wants a customer list on page x and not only on page Y, he would simply put in a <jr:CustomerList runat="server" .... /> (fictional example with ASP.NET Webforms syntax)).

• Problem with Silverlight 3 projects in Web Developer Express 2008

  Hi, I have a strange problem when working with silverlight 3 projects in Web Developer Express 2008. Mainly, I cannot show the design view of a XAML file. Also the XAML files (markup) are shown as plain text files (No Syntax coloring & No Intellisense). However I can write an application that is compiled and run successfully. I have the following installed on my machine: Windows XP SP3 Visual Web Developer Express 2008 SP1 & .NET 3.5 SP1 SL3 Requirements I had a few problems while installing SL3 SDK & Tool for VS. I repeated the process many times until the installation succeeded. The main problem was in the "SL Tools for VS" installation where I used to get an error in the middle. My workaround was to extract the MSI file and manually run the VWDxxx installer from the extracted files. Is this the cause of the problem? Kindly advise as it's impractical to work w/o Intellisense.   I'm new to web development although I'm confident in the roadmap for the front-end. I need direction on two things: Basic architecture Back-end technologies For architecture, what do I need to get started? From what I know, its: Get a domain name registered (godaddy?) Find a web host ??? anything else? or start developing the site? I don't think its that easy, there must be something I'm missing, right? For the back-end technologies, I have application development experience with Java and Python, but how likely is it to find a back-end hosting site that supports these languages over PHP? Is PHP a better choice? If I stick with what I know for the back-end, am I sabotaging myself later on? If I need help, how is the market for a python/java developer vs. a php developer? What do I need to know about databases? I have some basic SQL experience. Do hosting sites have limitations on the type of databases or bandwidth I need to worry about? I'm working through some of the common sites: StackOverflow, Sitepoint forums, Google, etc...are there other resources I should use?

• Maintain List of Active Users for Web

  Problem Statement - Would like to know if particular web app user is active (i.e. logged in and using site) and be able to query for list of active users or determine a user's activity status. Constraints - Doesn't need to be exact (i.e. if a user was active within a certain timeframe, that's ok to say that they're active even if they've closed their browser). I feel like there should be a design pattern for this type of problem but haven't been able to find anything here or elsewhere on the web. Approaches I'm considering: Maintain a table that is updated any time a user performs an action (or some subset of actions). Would then query for users that have performed an action within some threshold of time. Try to monitor session information and maintain a table that lists logged in users and times out after a certain period of time. Some other more standard way of doing this? How would you approach this problem (again, from a design pattern perspective)? Thanks!

  Before I start: I'm programming for Iphone, using objective C. I have already implemented a call to a web service function using NSURLRequest and NSURLConnection. The function then returns a XML with the info I need. The code is as follows: NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:@"http://myWebService/function"]; NSMutableURLRequest theRequest = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL:url]; NSURLConnection theConnection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:theRequest delegate:self]; i also implemented the methods didRecieveResponse didRecieveAuthenticationChallenge didRecievedData didFailWithError connectionDidFinishLoading. And it works perfectly. Now I need to send 2 parameters to the function: "location" and "module". I tried using the following modification: NSMutableURLRequest theRequest = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL:url]; [theRequest setValue:@"USA" forHTTPHeaderField:@"location"]; [theRequest setValue:@"DEVELOPMENT" forHTTPHeaderField:@"module"]; NSURLConnection theConnection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:theRequest delegate:self]; But it doesn't seem to work. I'm doing something wrong? is there a way to know if I'm using the wrong names for the parameters (as maybe it is "Location" or "LOCATION" or it doesn't matter?)? or a way to know which parameters is the function waiting for... Extra info: I don't have access to the source of the web service so I can't modify it. But I can access the WSDL. The person who made the function say is all there... but I can't make any sense of it .< Any help would be appreciated. :)

• Automatic web form testing/filling

  I recently became lead on getting an inordinate amount of testing done in a very short period of time. We have many different web forms, using custom (Telerik) controls that need to be tested for proper data validation and sensible handling of the data. Some of the forms are several pages long with 30-80 different controls for data entry. I am looking for a software solution (that is free) that would allow me to automate the process of filling in these forms by designing a script, or using a UI. The other requirement is that I can't use any browsers but IE6 (terrible, I know). I have previously used AutoHotkey to great success for automatic Windows form testing, since Autohotkey's API allows you to directly reference controls on the Windows form. However Autohotkey does not have similar support for web forms (everything is just one big "InternetExplorer" control). While I would prefer that I could script some variance in the data to help serialize each test, it's not necessary, as I could go back through and manually edit a field or two (plus "break" whatever control I'm currently testing) to serialize each test. If you've ever seen Spawner: http://forge.mysql.com/projects/project.php?id=214 It's almost exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for (Spawner generates dummy SQL data, as opposed to dummy webform data) - but I won't be picky, I've got a really short deadline to meet and had this thrust in my lap just today. ;) Edit1: One of the challenges of just using Autohotkey to simulate keyboard input (tabbing through controls) is that some controls don't currently have tab index (bug), and some controls cause a page reload after modification, resulting in inconsistent control focus (tabbing screwed up). Our application makes heavy use of page reloads to populate fields (select a location, it auto-populates a city, for example).

• Web Workers - Transferable Objects for JSON

  HTML 5 Web workers are very slow when using worker.postMessage on a large JSON object. I'm trying to figure out how to transfer a JSON Object to a web worker - using the 'Transferable Objects' types in Chrome, in order to increase the speed of this.   I would like to know if there is a Facebook API call to retrieve the events (eids) for all the events a user has created using my facebook connect application. The events are created using the following REST api call: https://api.facebook.com/method/events.create?event_info=' . $e_i . '&access_token=' . $cookie['access_token'] $e_i is the event info array where the 'host' value is set to 'Me' as follows $event_info['host'] = 'Me'; On Facebook events under the "Created by:" section it lists "My user name,Application Name", I presume this is because I am the creator and the application is the admin as stated in the REST api documentation http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/rest/events.create/ Unfortunately I cannot seem to find out how (neither REST nor GPRAPH API) to return a list of events where I am the creator and the application is the admin as in the above scenario. If this is possible I would really appreciate some assistance with how it is done. So far I have tried: REST API events.get using uid=application_id. This only returns events created by the application not those including the user who created them GRAPH API https://graph.facebook.com/me/events?fields=owner&access_token=... this returns all the events for 'me' but not where the application is also the admin. It seems strange that there's no reference to the linkage between the event creator and the event admin through the API but in Facebook it is able to pull both and display them on the event details.

• Calling ASP.NET Web API using JQuery ajax - cross site scripting issue

  I have a Web API which I am calling using the JQuery ajax function. When I test the service directly (using the Chrome RESTEasy extension) it works fine, however when I call it using the JQuery ajax function I get an error. I'm calling it on port 81: $.ajax({ url: "http://127.0.0.1:81/api/people", data: JSON.stringify(personToCreate), type: "POST", contentType: "application/json;charset=utf-8", statusCode: { 201: function (newPerson) { callback(newPerson); } }, success: function (newPerson) { alert("New person created with an Id of " + newPerson.Id); }, error: function (jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) { alert('Error. '+textStatus+'. '+errorThrown); } }); ...but when I trace it using FireBug Lite the response comes from port 82: {"Message":"No HTTP resource was found that matches the request URI 'http://127.0.0.1:82/api/people'.","MessageDetail":"No action was found on the controller 'People' that matches the request."} I think the error is, effectively, due to cross-site scripting being blocked, but I'm not actually cross-site scripting, if you see what I mean. Has anyone else come across this and been able to fix it? Edit: Routing config (global.asax.vb) is: RouteTable.Routes.MapHttpRoute(name:="DefaultApi", routeTemplate:="api/{controller}/{id}", defaults:=New With {Key .id = System.Web.Http.RouteParameter.Optional}) Controller: Public Function PostValue(ByVal departmentid As Integer, ByVal emailaddress As String, ByVal firstname As String, ByVal lastname As String) As Guid Dim context As New WSMModelDataContext Dim bllPeople As New PeopleBLL(context) Return bllPeople.Create(firstname, lastname, emailaddress, departmentid) End Function When I debug it, it doesn't get as far as running the controller, although when calling it through RESTEasy it routes correctly and the controller executes successfully. The only difference seemes to be that wen called through RESTEasy it is (correctly) using http://127.0.0.1:81 but for some reason when called via JQuery/ajax it seems to be using http://127.0.0.1:82.

  Hello, I have built .NET 1.1 Web Service which should accept files and save them. All I get is byte array with only one element. Definition of byte array for file, in WSDL looks like this: <s:element minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="1" name="docbinaryarray" type="s:base64Binary" /> He sends me base64binary and fails every time. All I get is Byte array with only one element inside.

• How to implement web cache: internal fragmentation VS external fragmentation

  Hi there: I come up with this question when play with Firefox web cache: in which approach does the browser cache a response in limited disk space(take my configuration as an example, 50MB is the upper bound)? I think two ways can be employed. One is cache the total response object one by one, but this is inefficient and will introduce external fragmentation, thus the total cache space may not be fully used. The second is take the total space(50MB) as a consecutive file, splitting it into fixed-length slots; incoming response objects will also be treated blocks of data with the same length as the slots. We can fill slots until the whole file is run out of, then some displacement algorithm can be used to swap out the old cached objects. The latter approach will of course bing in internal fragmentation, but in my opinion is easier to implement and maintain than the first strategy. But when I enter Firefox's Cache directory, I find it (maybe) use a different method: a lot of varied-length files reside in that directory and all those files are filled with undisplayable characters. I don't but really want to know what mechanism that a commercial browser, e.g. Firefoix, employed to implement web cache. Regards.

• Problems with ASP.NET, machine-level web.config, and the location element

  I've got a server running Windows Web Server 2008 R2. The machine-level web.config has the following entries: <location path="Preview"> <appSettings> <add key="Environment" value="Preview" /> </appSettings> </location> <location path="Staging"> <appSettings> <add key="Environment" value="Staging" /> </appSettings> </location> <location path="Production"> <appSettings> <add key="Environment" value="Production" /> </appSettings> </location> I have a website that I'd set up in the direction D:\Sites\Preview\, so the full path would be D:\Sites\Preview\WebSite1. If I put a simple aspx file that just outputs the value of ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["Environment"], it displays the value Preview. I'm not clear on exactly how that works, but it does. I'd set this up several weeks ago, and just now tried to duplicate this - I put a second site in the D:\Sites\Preview\ directory, expecting that it would automatically pick up the appropriate appSettings entries, but for some reason it hasn't - the same aspx page doesn't show anything. Additionally, when I go into the IIS manager and open the Configuration Editor, there are no settings in there, whereas there are settings listed for the first site. Any ideas as to what I could be missing? Is the location element intended to work like this, or did I just find some magical fluke with my first site?

• backbone js or knockout js as a web framework with jquery mobile

  without trying to cause a mass discussion I would like some advice from the fellow users of stack overflow. I am about to start building a mobile website that gets it data from JSON that comes from a PHP rest api. I have looked into different mobile frameworks and feel that JQM will work best for us as we have the knowledge of jQuery even though a little large. Currently at work however we are using jQuery for all our sites and realise that now we are building a mobile website I need to think about javascript frameworks to move us onto a more MV* approach, which I understand the benefits of and will bring much needed structure to this mobile site and future web applications we may bring. I have made a comparision table where I have managed to bring the selection down to 2 - backbone and knockout. I have been looking around the web and it seems that there is more support for backbone in general and maybe even more support for backbone with JQM. http://jquerymobile.com/test/docs/pages/backbone-require.html One thing I have noticed however is that backbone doesnt support view bindings (declarative approach) whereas knockout does - is this a massive bonus? one of the main reasons for using a mv* for us is to get more structure - so I would like to use the library that will intergrate best with jQuery and especially jQuery mobile. neither of them seem to have that similar syntax... In general: Ability to configure report (i.e., the hidden REPORT_ variables) Web FORM for setting report parameters (i.e., the report_ variables) Framework handles configuring database connection, report execution, etc. I don't care about the technical minutia on how the integration works. The example above is just one possibility of many.
