  • Interrupted system call during "hg convert"

    - by Aaron Digulla
When I run "hg convert" to convert a Subversion repository to Mercurial, I get this error: fetching revision log for "/trunk" from 1538 to 0 run hg sink post-conversion action Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/mercurial/dispatch.py", line 46, in _runcatch return _dispatch(ui, args) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/mercurial/dispatch.py", line 454, in _dispatch return runcommand(lui, repo, cmd, fullargs, ui, options, d) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/mercurial/dispatch.py", line 324, in runcommand ret = _runcommand(ui, options, cmd, d) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/mercurial/dispatch.py", line 505, in _runcommand return checkargs() File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/mercurial/dispatch.py", line 459, in checkargs return cmdfunc() File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/mercurial/dispatch.py", line 453, in <lambda> d = lambda: util.checksignature(func)(ui, *args, **cmdoptions) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/mercurial/util.py", line 386, in check return func(*args, **kwargs) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/hgext/convert/__init__.py", line 229, in convert return convcmd.convert(ui, src, dest, revmapfile, **opts) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/hgext/convert/convcmd.py", line 398, in convert c.convert(sortmode) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/hgext/convert/convcmd.py", line 312, in convert parents = self.walktree(heads) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/hgext/convert/convcmd.py", line 109, in walktree commit = self.cachecommit(n) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/hgext/convert/convcmd.py", line 267, in cachecommit commit = self.source.getcommit(rev) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/hgext/convert/subversion.py", line 433, in getcommit self._fetch_revisions(revnum, stop) File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/hgext/convert/subversion.py", line 814, in _fetch_revisions for entry in stream: File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/hgext/convert/subversion.py", line 122, in __iter__ entry = pickle.load(self._stdout) IOError: [Errno 4] Interrupted system call abort: Interrupted system call Apparently, it is possible to restart a read on EINTR but how would I do that with pickle.load()? • BASH Wildcard Expansion

    - by Aaron Copley
I'm not really sure how to phrase this, and maybe that's why I can't find any thing, but I want to reuse the values enumerated by a wildcard in a command. Is this possible? Scenario: $ ls /dir 1 2 3 Contents of /dir are directories 1, 2, and 3. $ cp /dir/*/file . Results in file being copied from /dir/1 /dir/2 and /dir/3 to here. What I would like to do is copy the files to a new destination name based on the wildcard expansion. $ cp /dir/*/file ???-file Would result in /dir/*/file being copied to 1-file, 2-file, and 3-file. What I can't figured out is the ??? portion to tell BASH I want to use the wildcard expanded values. Using the wildcard in the target nets a cp error: cp: target `*-file' is not a directory. Is there something else in bash that can be used here? The find command has {} to use with -exec which is similar to what I am looking for above.

  • How do I reinstall/enable snapper?

    - by Aaron Digulla
I had errors in my root filesystem (btrfs) so I recreated it from a backup but now, snapper doesn't work anymore: # /usr/bin/snapper -v -v -v -v create --description test IO Error. # snapper -v delete-config Deleting config failed (deleting snapshot failed). # snapper create-config / Creating config failed (subvolume already covered). # snapper -c root create-config / Creating config failed (subvolume already covered). # snapper list Type | # | Pre # | Date | User | Cleanup | Description | Userdata -------+---+-------+------+------+---------+-------------+--------- single | 0 | | | root | | current | I also tries to reinstall/remove and install the package snapper but without any luck. • Debootstrap Ubuntu over NFS leads to mknod I/O error

    - by Aaron B. Russell
Hi everyone, I'm trying to prepare an Ubuntu environment for a diskless machine that will PXE boot and mount an NFS share as it's root. I've currently got another Ubuntu machine mounting the NFS share and I'm trying to debootstrap into it, but it has trouble creating devices over NFS: root@kimiko:~# mount | grep Seiuchi 192.168.0.203:/mnt/user/Seiuchi on /mnt type nfs (rw,addr=192.168.0.203) root@kimiko:~# debootstrap --arch i386 maverick /mnt http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ mknod: `/mnt/test-dev-null': Input/output error E: Cannot install into target '/mnt' mounted with noexec or nodev My NFS rule on the unRAID server is 192.168.0.201/32(rw,no_root_squash,sync). I don't have the noexec or nodev options set. I've not got much experience with NFS, so I'm probably missing something basic in the way I'm sharing this, but my attempts at Googling for an answer isn't really turning anything useful up. Does anyone have suggestions on what I might have missed or maybe relevant docs? Edit: Creating normal files (and directories) works just fine, I just can't create devices... root@kimiko:/mnt# mkdir foo root@kimiko:/mnt# cd foo root@kimiko:/mnt/foo# touch bar root@kimiko:/mnt/foo# mknod quux c 4 64 mknod: `quux': Input/output error root@kimiko:/mnt/foo# ls bar

  • SQL Server v.Next (Denali) : Another SSMS bug that should be fixed

    - by AaronBertrand
Sorry to call this out in a separate post (I talked about a bunch of SSMS Connect items the other day), but Aaron Nelson ( blog | twitter ) jogged my memory today about an issue that has gone unfixed for years: the custom coloring for Registered Servers is neither consistent nor global. For one of my servers, I've chosen a red color to show in the status bar. Let's pretend this is a production server, and I want the red to remind me to use caution. I can set this up by right-clicking a Registered...(read more)

  • Portable scripting language for a multi-server admin?

    - by Aaron
Please Note: Portable as in portableapps.com, not the traditional definition. Originally posted on stackoverflow.com, asking here at another user's suggestion. I'm a DBA and sysadmin, mostly for Windows machines running SQL Server. I'm looking for a programming/scripting language for Windows that doesn't require Admin access or an installer, needing no install process other than expanding it into a folder. My intent is to have a language for automation on which I can standardize. Up to this point, I've been using a combination of batch files and Unix shell, using sh.exe from UnxUtils but it's far from a perfect solution. I've evaluated a handful of options, all of them have at least one serious shortcoming or another. I have a strong preference for something open source or dual license, but I'm more interested in finding the right tool than anything else. Not interested that anything that relies on Cygwin or Java, but at this point I'd be fine with something that needs .NET. Requirements: Manageable footprint (1-100 files, under 30 MB installed) Run on Windows XP and Server (2003+) No installer (exe, msi) Works with external pipes, processes, and files Support for MS SQL Server or ODBC connections Bonus Points: Open Source FFI for calling functions in native DLLs GUI support (native or gtk, wx, fltk, etc) Linux, AIX, and/or OS X support Dynamic, object oriented and/or functional, interpreted or bytecode compiled; interactive development Able to package or compile scripts into executables So far I've tried: Ruby: 148 MB on disk, 23000 files Portable Python: 54 MB on disk, 2800 files Strawberry Perl: 123 MB on disk, 3600 files REBOL: Great, except closed source and no MSSQL or ODBC in free version Squeak Smalltalk: Great, except poor support for scripting ---- cut: points of clarification ---- Why all the limitations? I realize some of my criteria seem arbitrarily confining. It's primarily a product my environment. I work as a SQL Server DBA and backup Unix admin at a division of a large company. In addition to near a hundred boxes running some version or another of SQL Server on Windows, I also support the SQL Server Express Edition installs on over a thousand machines in the field. Because of our security policies, I don't login rights on every machine. Often enough, an issue comes up and I'm given local Admin for some period of time. Often enough, it's some box I've never touched and don't have my own environment setup yet. I may have temporary admin rights on the box, but I'm not the admin for the machine- I'm just the DBA. I've no interest in stepping on the toes of the Windows admins, nor do I want to take over any of their duties. If I bring up "installing" something, suddenly it becomes a matter of interest for Production Control and the Windows admins; if I'm copying up a script, no one minds. The distinction may not mean much to the readers, but if someone gets the wrong idea I've suddenly got a long wait and significant overhead before I can get the tool installed and get the problem solved. That's why I want something that can be copied and run in the manner of a portable app. What about the small footprint? My company has three divisions, each in a different geographical location, and one of them is a new acquisition. We have different production control/security policies in each division. I support our MSSQL databases in all three divisions. The field machines are spread around the US, sometimes connecting to the VPN over very slow links. Installing Ruby \using psexec has taken a long time over these connections. In these instances, the bigger time waster seems to be archives with thousands and thousands of files rather than their sheer size. You could say I'm spoiled by Unix, where the admins usually have at least some modern scripting language installed; I'd use PowerShell, but I don't know it well and more importantly it isn't everywhere I need to work. It's a regular occurrence that I need to write, deploy and execute some script on short notice on some machine I've never on which logged in. Since having Ruby or something similar installed on every machine I'll ever need to touch is effectively impossible because of the approvals, time and and Windows admin labor needed I makes more sense find a solution that allows me to work on my own terms.

  • No architecture vs architecture-specific binaries

    - by Aaron
From what I understand, the noarch suffix means that it's architecture independent and should work universally. If this is the case, why should I install architecture-specific packages at all? Why not just go straight for the noarch? Are there optimizations in the x86 or x64 binaries that aren't found in the noarch binaries? What's best for high performance applications? Folding@Home does this with their controller:

  • Compressing and copying large files on Windows Server?

    - by Aaron
I've been having a hard time copying large database backups from the database server to a test box at another site. I'm open to any ideas that would help me get this database moved without having to resort to a USB hard drive and the mail. The database server is running Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise, 16 GB of RAM and two quad-core 3.0 GHz Xeon X5450s. Files are SQL Server 2005 backup files between 100 GB and 250 GB. The pipe is not the fastest and SQL Server backup files typically compress down to 10-40% of the original, so it made sense to me to compress the files first. I've tried a number of methods, including: gzip 1.2.4 (UnxUtils) and 1.3.12 (GnuWin) bzip2 1.0.1 (UnxUtils) and 1.0.5 (Cygwin) WinRAR 3.90 7-Zip 4.65 (7za.exe) I've attempted to use WinRAR and 7-Zip options for splitting into multiple segments. 7za.exe has worked well for me for database backups on another server, which has ~50 GB backups. I've also tried splitting the .BAK file first with various utilities and compressing the resulting segments. No joy with that approach either- no matter the tool I've tried, it ends up butting against the size of the file. Especially frustrating is that I've transferred files of similar size on Unix boxes without problems using rsync+ssh. Installing an SSH server is not an option for the situation I'm in, unfortunately. For example, this is how 7-Zip dies: H:\dbatmp>7za.exe a -t7z -v250m -mx3 h:\dbatmp\zip\db-20100419_1228.7z h:\dbatmp\db-20100419_1228.bak 7-Zip (A) 4.65 Copyright (c) 1999-2009 Igor Pavlov 2009-02-03 Scanning Creating archive h:\dbatmp\zip\db-20100419_1228.7z Compressing db-20100419_1228.bak System error: Unspecified error

  • publickey authentication only works with existing ssh session

publickey authentication only works for me if I've already got one ssh session open. I am trying to log into a host running Ubuntu 10.10 desktop with publickey authentication, and it fails when I first log in: [me@my-laptop:~]$ ssh -vv host ... debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering public key: /Users/me/.ssh/id_rsa ... debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method debug1: Next authentication method: password me@hosts's password: And the /var/log/auth.log output: Jan 16 09:57:11 host sshd[1957]: reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for cpe-70-114-155-20.austin.res.rr.com [70.114.155.20] failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! NOTE: When I installed Ubuntu 10.10, I checked the 'encrypt home folder' option. I'm wondering if this has something to do with the log message "Error attempting to add filename encryption key to user session keyring"

  • Error- D:\ is not accessible. Access is denied

    - by Aaron
All of the sudden the D drive gives me an error when I try to open it: D:\ is not accessible. Access is denied. I have files on the drive that I would like to recover, so I do not want to reformat the drive. It acts almost like the computer doesn't recognize the drive. I have a feeling it's something with security settings, I may have accidentally changed something on the drive. I'm running on a Acer Aspire laptop on Windows Vista, SP2. I beleive both the C and the D drive run off of the same disk drive. At least that's all the Device Manager shows. So correct me if I'm wrong, but that would make it a partitioned drive.

  • Encrypting traffic on remote end of SSH tunnel

    - by Aaron
Using an example of someone connecting to a VPS, an SSH tunnel will encrypt any traffic coming from the user to the VPS. Once it reaches the VPS network, the traffic is not encrypted and is easily sniffable by network administrators on that particular network. (am I understanding all that correctly?) Is there a way to have the traffic encrypted on both ends so that neither side is susceptible to packet sniffing to reveal what kind of data/traffic/protocol is being transmitted?

  • How do I compile mercurial 1.5.2 on debian?

    - by Aaron Digulla
I downloaded the files for Mercurial 1.5.2 from http://packages.debian.org/sid/mercurial (mercurial_1.5.2-1.debian.tar.gz, mercurial_1.5.2-1.dsc and mercurial_1.5.2.orig.tar.gz). How do I get a .deb package out of these? I tried to follow the instructions at http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/ch-build.en.html but they don't work. I tried to unpack the two archives and run dpkg-buildpackage or debian/rules build but that fails with: dh --with quilt clean dh_testdir debian/rules override_dh_auto_clean make[1]: Entering directory `/home/user/packages/mercurial-deb' cp -a mercurial/__version__.py mercurial/__version__.py.save cp: cannot stat `mercurial/__version__.py': No such file or directory make[1]: *** [override_dh_auto_clean] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/user/packages/mercurial-deb' make: *** [clean] Error 2 That's because the directory mercurial is inside mercurial_1.5.2/. Why doesn't the build script cd into the right place? If I try ../debian/rules build, I get dh --with quilt build dh: cannot read debian/control: No such file or directory sigh How do I compile a package for debian???

  • Does an unmanaged 4/8-port GBit Ethernet switch with a GBIC port exist?

    - by Aaron Digulla
I'm looking for a simple unmanaged switch with 4-8 GBit Ethernet ports and a fiber port (either as a GBIC slot or pre-installed with a 1000BASE-SX port). Does something like that exist? [EDIT] I want to connect to places in my home without drilling large holes though the floors. Therefore, I'm looking for a cheap way to connect two GBit switches via fiber. I tried with a media converter (GBit <- multimode fiber) but that costs about 50% throughput. So I was hoping that there is a cheap, small GBit switch which has a GBIC slot). All I found so far are very expensive managed switches with 12 or 24 ports for industry use.

My question is this: Is this sane? I am stepping into a quagmire of cost, maintainability, security or performance problems?

  • Recommendations for handling Directory Harvesting spam on Exchange 2003

    - by Aaron Alton
Our Exchange server is getting slammed with anywhere between 450,000 and 700,000 spam messages per day. We receive about 1700 legitimate messages in the same time frame. Roughly 75% of the spam is directory harvesting. We currently have GFI MailEssentials installed. To it's credit, it's doing a very good job, but the sheer volume of spam that we're receiving, and the number of connections that our exchange server is making is preventing legitimate email from being delivered in a timely manner. GFI is set up to check for directory harvesting at the SMTP level, which I presume intercepts the mail before it hits the Exchange services , or goes through SMSE. This "module" is ordered at the top of the list, so (hopefully) dealing with the harvesting is consuming a minimum amount of server resources and bandwidth. My question is, is there anything I can do to prevent our Exchange server's connection pool from being eaten up by these spam hosts? We had to limit the number of concurrent connections being made by Exchange, because it was consuming all of our bandwidth. Thanks, in advance.

I want to rid out department of DiffDoc the problem is that I am having trouble locating something that will do what we need. WinMerge has been the latest attempt... The problem is simple. One Word doc...one PDF with a portion of it containing the text to be compared against. Compare them and be done. Raw text, ignore whitespace, ignore carriage returns, etc... Just compare the text and give me the results in some sort of report. NOTE: Have tried ExamDiff, kdiff3, Tortoise, and a few others...
