• Where to start in creating a massive multiplayer 3D Java game [on hold]

  I am planning on creating a massive multiplayer world and I am wondering where to start. I am quite inexperienced in the field of Java but I have researched into it and learned that it is perhaps my best bet in creating this project is Java for the fact that it has a much easier learning curve than C++ to beginners and still capable of holding massive amounts of players at a time. My question is simple: Should I start the game by creating a single player prototype and introducing multiplayer later as I become more experienced or start with multiplayer before I am completely experienced in the field. • Citrix SDK: Where to start? [closed]

  I'm needing to start hacking around the Citrix SDK and am trying to figure out where to start. I'm wanting to basically find a way to pass data from the client to the server and figure out how to open an application on the citrix client. I see there is a XenApp SDK, and Virtual Channel SDK but really don't know which one I need to start with. I have a Citrix development virtual server set up, but am unsure how to get started. Does someone know of a good site/tutorial on how to get started with the various Citrix API's quickly?

• DHCP won't start / subnetting

  I recently changed the IP address on an Ubuntu 12.04 server I have in my lab, which is running isc-dhcp-server. After doing so and modifying the dhcpd.conf file, my dhcp service would not start. I basically used the same configuration, except I modified everything to use /25 scopes rather than /24. When I try to start / restart the service, I see the following: MY@ubuntuserver:~$ sudo service isc-dhcp-server restart stop: Unknown instance: isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 20918 It looks like it starts, but it isn't actually running and Webmin states that the DHCP service is not running. So my question is, does isc-dhcp-server support subnetting (CIDR) style scopes, or must they be class A / B / C scopes (doesn't seem likely)? I've double checked the interface reference (this is a VM with only one defined eth0 interface) and everything else I can thing of.

• Not enough components to start the RAID array?

  I'm trying to retrieve data from a "Western Digital MyBook World Edition (white light)" NAS device. This is basically an embedded Linux box with a 1TB HDD in it formatted in ext3. It stopped booting one day for no apparent reason. I have extracted the HDD from the NAS device and installed it in a desktop machine running Ubuntu 10.10 in the hope of accessing the files on the drive. Unfortunately, Ubuntu has not been able to mount the drive automatically. Having started up Disk Utility I see the drive as a multi disk device called "Array (Array)" showing Metadata Version 0.90.0. The device state is: "Not Running, not enough components to start". When I click the "Start RAID Array" button I get an error saying: "Not enough components to start the RAID array". Can you please tell me which components are missing and how to install them to get access to the drive's filesystem?

• Start Programming embedded devices

  I am good at C programming and also I am good at embedded devices. I have setup an embedded circuit myself using the basic arduino and by interfacing some devices with it. But the main problem is that I do not know where and how to start programming this device with the known C programming skills. The device has an on chip boot loader. By "start programming", I mean how to bring the embedded device into my programming and stuff. I know program starts from a main() and an infinite loop makes the application run. But the real question is, how to start this all and integrate the hardware with the software which I write. Kindly help with this. Thanks for the help in advance.

  A lot of people are unhappy with being forced to interact with the new Start Screen in Windows 8 first thing once they have logged into their system. But their is a quick and simple work-around to go directly to Desktop Mode that does not require installing extra software or making changes to your system. The first thing that you will need to do is make sure that the Desktop Tile is in the left uppermost position on the Start Screen as seen here. Once the tile has been moved to that position you will need to restart/reboot your system. Once your system has restarted and you are back at the Login Screen, type in your password but do NOT click on the Arrow Button or tap the Enter Key. Instead of tapping the Enter Key simply press down on it and hold it down until you see the regular desktop. Keep in mind that you may see the Start Screen become visible for just a short moment as it is being bypassed for the desktop. Windows are then created from that point onwards of the size you specified in your code.  If a window contains no events they are not produced by the engine to the output.  This is why window start times can be before the first event is created.

• LightDM will not start after stopping it

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot", and in trying to install the nvidia CUDA developer drivers I switched to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F5) and stopped lightdm (installation required that no X server instance be running) through sudo service lightdm stop. Re-starting lightdm with sudo service lightdm start did not work: A couple of * Starting [...] lines where displayed, but the process hanged. (I do not remember at which point, but I think it was * Starting System V runlevel compatibility. I manually rebooted my laptop, and ever since booting seems to hang, usually around the * Starting anac(h)ronistic cron [OK] log line (not consistently at that point, though). From that point on, I seem to be able to interact with my system only through a tty session (Ctrl-Alt-F1). I've tried purging and reinstalling both lightdm and gdm, as well as selecting both as the default display managers (through sudo dpkg-reconfigure [lightdm / gdm] or by manually editing /etc/X11/default-display-manager) through both apt-get and aptitude (that shouldn't make a difference anyway) after updating the packages, but the problem persists. Some of the responses I'm getting are the following: After running sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm (but not ... gdm) I get the following message: dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_NAME missing dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_PACKAGE missing After trying sudo service lightdm start or sudo start lightdm I get to see the boot loading screen again but nothing changes. If I go back to the tty shell I see lightdm start/running, process <num> but ps -e | grep lightdm gives no output. After trying sudo service gdm start or sudo starg gdm I get the gdm start/running, process <num> message, and gdm-binary is supposedly an active process, but all that happens is that the screen blinks a couple of times and nothing else. Other candidate solutions that I'd found on the web included running startx but when I try that I get an error output [...] Fatal server error: no screens found [...]. Moreover, I made sure that lightdm-gtk-greeter is installed but that did not help either. Please excuse my not including complete outputs/logs; I am writing this post from another computer and it's hard to manually copy the complete logs. Also, I've seen several posts that had to do with similar problems, but either there was no fix, or the one suggested did not work for me. In closing: Please help! I very much hope to avoid re-installing Ubuntu from scratch! :) Alex @mosi I did not manage to fix the NVIDIA kernel driver as per your instructions. I should perhaps mention that I'm on a Dell XPS15 laptop with an NVIDIA Optimus graphics card, and that I have bumblebee installed (which installs nvidia drivers during its installation, I believe). The Start Menu was getting too big, so I've navigated to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and created some sub-folders in various categories [image editors, system utilities, media players, security for example] in which to group the shortcuts. Having created the group folders, I've dragged and dropped the Start Menu shortcuts into them. However it seems all Start Menu shortcuts are not alike. Some programs, their shortcut folders having been moved from the Start Menu, spawn NEW [but empty] folders bearing their company names in the top level of the Start Menu eg AVICodec Some programs don't have Start Menu shortcut folders that can be seen in WinExplorer [or equiv] at all, even though they turn up under the Start Menu itself. It seems these can be moved where they are visible i.e. in the Start - All Programs by dragging and dropping not just onto the desired folder but by hovering to expand the desired folder and then dropping between other shortcuts there. Eg Daum, Format Factory That's not such a problem, but why it's happening is a mystery. What's going on, and how to make these shortcuts behave normally or otherwise control them properly?

• Apache crashes a few seconds after the start.

  Hi, i've got a problem with apache. When i try to start it (/etc/init.d/apache2 start) it dies after a few seconds. It shows up on "ps aux" consuming a lot of memory and then dies. • I am not able launch JNLP aaplications using "Java Web Start"?

  Up until recently, I was able to launch/open JNLP files in Firefox using Java web start. Don't know what happened all of a sudden JNLP files stopped launching, a splash screen appears saying Java Starting... and then nothing happens. Even the Java Console in the browser and javacpl.cpl applet doesn't open. Tried all possibilities: removed all older version and installed the latest JRE (java version "1.6.0_17"), still it doesn't work. Done some googling for this problem, people suggested to start javaws.exe with -viewer option but same behavior (a splash screen appears saying "Java Starting..." and then disappears) The problem is that I don't know any place (logs etc.) to look for to see what is causing the problem. I am using WinXP SP3, and some of the screenshots below shows further info about my system. I can provide any other detail if required but please help me solve this problem. Update: Although this question is bit old, Following solution fixed above issue for me (indeed this was the actual cause)

  Recently I've installed StarCraft 2 via playonlinux. The installation was absolutly no problem, everything was fine. But if I want to start the game now, it crashes. Rip Your TV DVDs into Handy Episode Files Dear How-To Geek, My wife got me an iPod for Christmas and I still haven’t got around to filling it up. I have tons of entire TV show seasons on DVD and would like to get them on the iPod but I have absolutely no idea where to start. How do I get the shows off the discs? I thought it would be as easy to import the TV shows into iTunes as it is to import tracks off a CD but I was totally wrong. I tried downloading some applications to rip them but those didn’t work at all. Very frustrating! Surely there is an easy and/or automated way to do this, right? It’s inordinately difficult to get movies and TV shows off physical media and into digital (and portable media player-friendly) formats. There are a multitude of ways to rip DVDs and quite a few applications out there (some good, some mediocre, and some outright malware). We’d recommend a two-part punch to solve your ripping woes. You’ll need a copy of DVDFab to strip away the protections on the discs and rip the disc and Handbrake to load the disc image and convert the files. It’s not quite as smooth as the CD-to-iTunes workflow but it’s still pretty easy. Check out all the steps and settings you’ll want to toggle here. • I cannot rename files in bulk using ubuntu's rename feature

  I cannot rename files in bulk using ubuntu's rename feature. The files are on a NTFS partition. I want to rename files that look like this: whatever pic george.jpg tacoma narrows bridge.jpg green bottle.jpg to: filename (1) filename (2) filename (3) And I cannot do this at all. I don't want to use the command line either. So I can permanently erase files after I have encrypted them without exposing their contents to people who use a file recovery tool. I also don't want a method that takes days or months to rename the file. That is, rename one file at a time. So if I have hundreds of files to rename, this won't be a option. I want to give a each file the same name and numbered in order like shown above. Pyrenamer is not an option for me, unless you can find how to do that in PyRenamer.
