  • Cent OS ifcfg configuration for ranges of IP's with different netmask

    I have 1 set of 30 public IP's with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and another set of 30 IP's with a netmask of 255.255.255.128. Both sets of IP's also have different gateways. How can I virtually assign the IP's to the machine? I have tried creating ifcfg-eth0:0 ifcfg-eth0:1 ifcfg-eth0:X ect for each IP. Below is my ifcfg file with. I have this for each IP with the correct gateway IP and netmask for each of my 60 IP's. If I do ip addr show it does show all of the 60 addresses with the correct broadcast IP and netmask. However I can only use 30 of my IP's that are from the same netmask. Am I doing this correctly? If the IP's show up with ip addr show does that mean I have correctly assigned them to the machine virtually? I want to check before I blame my hosting company for not routing the IP's correctly. I have used ifcfg-eth0:0-range1 before to assign a range of IP's from the same netmask. Is it possible to do this with ranges with different netmask? Thanks!

    hi, I am building a PC to act as a file server among other things, and I was wondering whether it is a good idea to create 2 partitions on the RAID 5 array, one for OS one for data, or to have a separate disk for OS and use array for data. Also, one day i may want to add another disk to the array, so would there be any issues if I had the OS partition on the RAID5 array when it came to resizing the data partition?

  • adding trac to apache2 configuration file

    I currently have apache2 running from a mythtv/mythweb install. This made two config files available in sites-enabled. One of them ("default-mythbuntu") has the VirtualHost directive and seems like a normal file (except a change to the directory index). There is also a mythweb.conf file that only has directives and sets various variables for mythweb. I want to host a trac site as well. According to this site: http://trac.edgewall.org/wiki/TracOnUbuntu there are some setting I need to set for the Trac site. They give me directions for making a VirtualHost, but I think I should use the current VirtualHost and just add the directives (I'll need to change the default location they point to from the site above to just point to the trac location). Where should I put these directives? Can I make a Trac.conf with just the settings for Trac and enable it, or do I need to put them in the default-mythbuntu file? I don't like that later because it doesn't separate out the Trac configs. How does Apache know that the mythweb (and the trac.conf I want to make) belong to the virtualhost defined in the default-mythbuntu? It is the only virtualhost that is being defined on my system if that matters.

  • How to setup a simple self-hosted dynamic DNS server

    I have a small internal network of physical machines running hypervisors, which in turn run several KVM Ubuntu virtual machines. How would I setup an internal dynamic DNS server so that when I run a script to create a new virtual machine, that VM could automatically register itself in the DNS server? Bind seems to be the standard DNS server for Linux, but it seems designed for a much more "static" DNS model. Dynamically updating this would require a complicated script that would have to SSH into the DNS server, edit configuration files, and then restart the server. This doesn't seem like a very elegant solution. Are there better options? I saw a similar question, although they're asking for a solution for a public setting on Amazon. My servers are entirely private, and I don't want to rely on an external VM host or Dynamic DNS provider.

  • Configuration Deployment to Linux Systems

    Hello, I'm looking for a nice way to add / remote ips (and possibly interact with an asset inventory system to track where ips are), start / stop processes, download logs, and all around genearal system admin duties from one place. It's okay if I require more than 1 program. That would still be better than having 50 million terminals open and trying to trace ip assignments etc on whiteboards.     I'm trying to script some IIS7 setup tasks in PowerShell using the WebAdministration module. I'm good with setting simple properties, but am having some trouble when it comes to dealing with collections of elements in the config files. As an immediate, example, I want to have application pools recycle on a given schedule, and the schedule is a collection of times. When I set this up via the IIS management console, the relevant config section looks like this: <add name="CVSupportAppPool"> <recycling> <periodicRestart memory="1024" time="00:00:00"> <schedule> <clear /> <add value="03:31:00" /> </schedule> </periodicRestart> </recycling> </add> In my script I would like to be able to accomplish the same thing, and I have the following two lines: #clear any pre-existing schedule Clear-WebConfiguration "/system.applicationHost/applicationPools/add[@name='$($appPool.Name)']/recycling/periodicRestart/schedule" #add the new schedule Add-WebConfiguration "/system.applicationHost/applicationPools/add[@name='$($appPool.Name)']/recycling/periodicRestart/schedule" -value (New-TimeSpan -h 3 -m 31) That does almost the same thing, but the resulting XML lacks the <clear/> element that is created with via the GUI, which I believe is necessary to avoid inheriting any default values. This sort of collection (with "add", "remove", and "clear" elements) seems to be fairly standard in the config files, but I can't seem to find any good documentation on how to interact with them consistently.

    When I was trying to create a new partition (via Disk Management) it warned me that the disk would be dynamic, but I thought it meant the partition and went ahead. Now, my hard disk, which has the main C partition, is dynamic. I haven't shut down the computer, and I'm not sure what the consequences are. Should I revert back to basic or...? What ever happens, I don't want to lose my data. Edit: I think I should mention that I don't know how to revert back to basic...

    In my windows (Windows 7) I have two primary logical volumns, One is on a SSD harddrive for my operating system and installed software, and my other is a Dynamic volume for my stored media. (I do alot of work with HD footage) I have all my media on the original DV tapes for backup purposes, just having them all available on my harddrive at all times is a major convience for me, well worth the few hundred dollar investment those 2TB drives were. Anyway, Long story short is my windows install has become problematic and I want to reformat windows. Does this, or will this effect my dynamic drive in any way? I've got almost 3 TB of video on there and i really dont want to re-import all my DV tapes.

  • Virtual hosting in Varnish with individual vcl files for configuration

    I wish to use varnish to put in front of an apache and a tomcat on the same server. Depending on the ip requested, it goes to a different backend. This works. Now for most of the sites the default varnish logic will work just fine. However for some specific sites I wish to use custom VCL code. I can test for host name and include config files for the specific domains, but this only works inside the individual methods recv etc. Is there a way to include a complete set of instructions, in one file, per domain, without having to manage separate files for subdomain_recv, subdomain_fetch etc? And preferably without running seperate instances of varnish. When I try to include a file on the "root level" of default.vcl, I get a compilation error. Best regards, Michael

    I am attempting to configure a new CISCO Aironet 1200 Series Access Point to have a fixed IP. I have been searching online and I have come to the conclusion that the default IP address of this device is 10.0.0.1. These are the steps I have taken: My machine is plugged directly into the Ethernet port (not the Console port) of the AP. My Ethernet adapter is set to 10.0.0.2. I have reset the AP by holding the Mode button while powering up the device. The issue remains that I can not access 10.0.0.1 through the web, nor can I ping that address.

  • Ram configuration 4x4 or 2x8?

    I am looking to upgrade my Ram to 16gigs and I am wondering if there is any distinct advantage of the way I do it. That being a 4x4 or 2x8 set up. In all my searching there have been a number of pros for each profile. I can find no benchmarck results for either setup as a compaison. So, if there are 2 profiles of the same speed, same voltage, same timing and same cas what would perform better or have a better over all benafit? A few examples from my search - a 4x4 set would lend a benafit in that if one stick failed, you only lose 25% of your Ram vs 50% in a 2x8 set up. a 2x8 set up would have less strain on the memory controler and motherboard. a 2x8 would generate less heat. a 2x8 set up is easier to over clock (not part of my need, but alot of the comparisons circled around the overclocability ease of the 2 stick set up). There is one outstanding benafit that I have found in at least the target company I have looked at and that is price. The 2x8 is nearly half the cost. My motherboard supports a max of 16 gigs and I have a 64 bit OS. Has anyone seen any performance comparisons or is 16 gb just 16 gb no matter how you slice it?     I have just finished a large re-organization and update of our institutions web server(s). This server hosts 3 virtual hosts, 3-4 blogs, 2 wikis, some legacy static HTML pages, and many hosted documents (PDF, .jpg, .xls). I have organized the site into a structure of something like: /var/www/sites/vhost1, vhost2, vhost3 .../wordpress/blogX .../mediawiki/wikiX Data is in a seperate directory structure so I can run a cron task over it to make sure it is all writeable and such. I then symlink to these data directories for each application. /var/www/data/vhost1, vhost2, vhost3 .../wordpress/blogX/uploads .../mediawiki/wikiX/images All Apache configs are in /etc/httpd/conf.d/vhosts.d/vhost1,2,3.conf On top of this there is also a testing server which mirrors this setup. Once changes are fully tested, they are rsynced down to the live server. All the wordpress installs and mediawiki installs are straight form SVN and updates are done by switching branches or "svn up". So my question is how can I best document to share with a) co-workers, b) possible future replacement, c) myself 6 months from now. Obviously I can make a wiki page, excel document, whatever and fill it with text, but I am looking for a more visual representation that I can use to explain the architecture to less-technical people. Ideally it would be awesome if this visual representation could then be expanded to get more technical details.

  • IIS 7: launch unique site instance per host name

    Is it possible to configure IIS 7 so that a single site with multiple bindings (or wildcard bindings) will launch a unique instance for each unique host name? To explain why this is desirable, we have an application that retrieves its configuration from a remote system. The behaviour of the application is governed by this configuration and not by the 'web.config'. The application uses its host name as a key to retrieve the configuration. Currently it is a manual process to create an identical IIS site for each instance of the application, differing only by the bindings. My thought, if it were possible, is that it would be nice to have one IIS site that effectively works as a template for an arbitrary number of dynamic sites. Whenever it is accessed by a unique host name a new instance of the site would be launched, and all further requests to that host name would go to that instance just as though I had created the site by hand. I use IIS regularly, but only for fairly straightforward site hosting. I'd like to know if this could be configured with vanilla IIS 7, but would also welcome answers that require a plugin or 3rd party product. Programming/architectural suggestions about changes to the app wouldn't really be appropriate for serverfault.

  • What's with the love of dynamic Languages

    It seems that everybody is jumping on the dynamic, non-compiled bandwagon lately. I've mostly only worked in compiled, static typed languages (C, Java, .Net). The experience I have with dynamic languages is stuff like ASP (Vb Script), JavaScript, and PHP. Using these technologies has left a bad taste in my mouth when thinking about dynamic languages. Things that usually would have been caught by the compiler such as misspelled variable names and assigning an value of the wrong type to a variable don't occur until runtime. And even then, you may not notice an error, as it just creates a new variable, and assigns some default value. I've also never seen intellisense work well in a dynamic language, since, well, variables don't have any explicit type. What I want to know is, what people find so appealing about dynamic languages? What are the main advantages in terms of things that dynamic languages allow you to do that can't be done, or are difficult to do in compiled languages. It seems to me that we decided a long time ago, that things like uncompiled asp pages throwing runtime exceptions was a bad idea. Why is there is a resurgence of this type of code? And why does it seem to me at least, that Ruby on Rails doesn't really look like anything you couldn't have done with ASP 10 years ago?

    While I playing with the C# 4.0 dynamic, I found strange things happening with the code like this: using System.Dynamic; sealed class Foo : DynamicObject { public override bool TryInvoke( InvokeBinder binder, object[] args, out object result) { result = new object(); return true; } static void Main() { dynamic foo = new Foo(); var t1 = foo(0); var t2 = foo(0); var t3 = foo(0); var t4 = foo(0); var t5 = foo(0); } } Ok, it works but... take a look at IntelliTrace window: So every invokation (and other operations too on dynamic object) causes throwing and catching strange exceptions twice! I understand, that sometimes exceptions mechanism may be used for optimizations, for example first call to dynamic may be performed to some stub delegate, that simply throws exception - this may be like a signal to dynamic binder to resolve an correct member and re-point delegate. Next call to the same delegate will be performed without any checks. But... behavior of the code above looks very strange. Maybe throwing and catching exceptions twice per any operation on DynamicObject - is a bug?
