  • Red Gate and the Community

    I was lucky enough to join the Communities team in April 2011, having worked in the equally awesome (but more number-crunchy), Finance team at Red Gate for about four years before that. Being totally passionate about Red Gate, and easily excitable, it seems like the perfect place to be. Not only do I get to talk to people who love Red Gate every day, I get to think up new ways to make them love us even more. Red Gate sponsored 178 SQL Server and .NET events and user group meetings in 2011. They ranged from SQL Saturdays and Code Camps to 10 person user group meetings, from California to Krakow. We've given away cash, software, Kindles, and of course swag. The Marketing Cupboard is like a wonderland of Red Gate goodies; it is guarded day and night to make sure the greedy Red Gaters don't pilfer the treasure inside. There are Red Gate yo-yos, books, pens, ice scrapers and, over the Holidays, there were some special bears. We had to double the patrols guarding the cupboard to protect them. You can see why: Over the Holidays, we gave funding and special Holiday swag (including the adorable bears), to 10 lucky user groups, who held Christmas parties - doing everything from theatre trips to going to shooting ranges.   • w00t! First post!

    So, I busted my old blog and hadn't been keeping up with it. Decided it would be easier on me to use software that I didn't maintain, so several months ago I signed up for a GWB account. You are a witness to procrastination at its finest!  I was remarking to my friend Abby that I hadn't written anything in ages, that I've typed a bunch in the last 5 years or so, but that the typing belonged to someone else as work product, was boring technical mumbo jumbo, or was only good before it spoiled, that project/job/technology/tweet based freshness window that us geeks have to deal with. In short, I just didn't feel like it. So forgive the rambling sentences and my grammatical failures, you have Abby to thank ;) On the technology front I've been working with WPF, WCF and a whole lot of other alphabet soup in terms of patterns. I'm starting to get spoiled on Visual Studio 2010, and may have made a mistake by evaluating the ultimate version. Because I'm a .NET geek and an outdoor geek, expect a hodgepodge. It's nearly Easter, which for the garden means a whole lot of things. I've already started getting seed out, and started working soil. It feels good to get real dirt on your hands.

  • AsyncBridge? Async on .NET 4.0 using VS11

    I've just found something quite cool. It's a code snippet that lets you use the real VS 11 C#5 compiler to write code that uses the async and await keywords, but to target .NET 4.0. It was published by Daniel Grunwald (from SharpDevelop).That means I can stop using the Async CTP for VS2010, which is not at all supported anymore, and a pain to install if you have windows updates turned on. Obviously I couldn't ask all my users to install .NET 4.5 beta, but .NET Demon is a VS 2010 extension, so we already have .NET 4.0. At the time of writing, VS11 is in beta still, but hopefully it's stable enough for my team to use!I would have written the code myself, but I had the wrong impression that the C# 5 beta compiler only looked in mscorlib for the helper classes it needs to implement async methods. Turns out you can provide them yourself. You can get the code here: https://gist.github.com/1961087You just add it to your project, and the compiler will apparently pick it up and use it to implement async/await. I'm at my parents' place for Easter without access to a machine with VS 11 to try it out. Let me know whether you get it to work!This reminds me of LINQBridge, which let us use C# 3 LINQ, but only require .NET 2. We should stick up a webpage to explain, with a nice easy dll, put it in nuget, and call it AsyncBridge.If you were really enthusiastic, you could re-implement the skeleton of the Task Parallel Library against .NET 2 to use async/await without even requiring .NET 4. Our usage stats suggest that practically everyone that uses Red Gate tools already has .NET 4 installed though, so I don't think I'll go to the effort.

  • browser without gpu support

    Google has an Easter egg that draws 3D graph but when I tried it out on chrome it complained about no WebGL support. I've also tested it on Firefox whose WebGL support was enabled but ended up with the same problem. Thus, I suspect it's an issue of my GPU. Some googling led me to chrome://gpu and here's what I got Graphics Feature Status Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable HTML Rendering: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable 3D CSS: Unavailable.   • Fun programming or something else?

    I've recently heard about android's isUserAGoat method and I didn't know what to think. At first I laughed my brains out, than I was embarrassed for my lack of professionalism and tried to look into it and see if it makes any normal sense. As it turns out it is a joke (as stated here) and it appears that other languages/apis have these sort of easter eggs implemented in their core. While I personally like them and feel they can be a fresh breath sometimes, I think that they also can be both frustrating and confusing (and you begin to ask yourself : "can users be goats?" or "I get it! "goat" is slang for.... wait.."). My question is are there any other examples of these kind of programming jokes and what are their intends? Should they be considered harmless or not (how do programmers feel about it) ? Do they reach their goal (if any other than to laugh) ? Where do you draw a line between a good joke and a disaster? (what if the method was called isUserStupid?)

  • phpMyAdmin 3.2.4 error #1227 - Access denied; you need the SUPER privilege for this operation

    I want to make a simple sql trigger on inserts... something like this CREATE TRIGGER filter AFTER INSERT ON table FOR EACH ROW DELETE FROM table WHERE field LIKE "%chicken%" OR field LIKE "%egg%"; After running it through phpMyAdmin 3.2.4 & MySQL 5.0.45 you get an error that says #1227 - Access denied; you need the SUPER privilege for this operation Is this syntax wrong or do I have to change something else to get past this error?

  • Python: disabling $HOME/.python-eggs?

    Is there an easy way to disable Python egg caching? We have the situation where a system account needs to run a python program which imports a module. Since this is a non-login robot account, it does not have a home directory, and dies trying to create the directory /.python-eggs. What's the best way to fix this? Can I convert my eggs in site-files to something which will not be cached in .python-eggs?

  • Fabfile with support for sqlalchemy-migrate deployments?

    I have database migrations (with sqlalchemy-migrate) working well in my dev environment. However, I'm a little stumped about how to integrate this into my deployment process. I'm using fabric for deployment but having some trouble scripting the migrations part. The path to the to migrations directory in site-packages is dynamic (due to changing egg version number) and I'd rather not hard code my db password into the fabfile. Does anyone have a fabfile that plays nicely with sqlalchemy-migrate?

  • What was the single byte change to port WordStar from CP/M to DOS?

    I was re-reading Joel's Strategy Letter II: Chicken and Egg problems and came across this fun quote: In fact, WordStar was ported to DOS by changing one single byte in the code. (Real Programmers can tell you what that byte was, I've long since forgotten). I couldn't find any other references to this with a quick Google search. Is this true or just a figure of speech? In the interest of my quest to become a "Real Programmer", what was the single byte change?

    Let's see how many of us fit the old stereotype, shall we? Do you typically use caffeine when programming? During the day or at night? How frequently do you pull all-nighters? Do you use caffeine when you do stay up late? Do you prefer to have a large amount of caffeine all at once, or small amounts over a longer period of time? Do you use energy drinks, 5-hour energy shots, coffee, tea, or caffeine pills? How about other stimulants such as amphetamines? For instance, I've known a programmer who dabbled in speed because they believed it increased their ability to focus on programming, though happily they're clean now and quite honest about the whole experience.     A number of holidays move around from year to year. For example, in Canada Victoria day (aka the May two-four weekend) is the Monday before May 25th, or Thanksgiving is the 2nd Monday of October (in Canada). I've been using variations on this Linq query to get the date of a holiday for a given year: var year = 2011; var month = 10; var dow = DayOfWeek.Monday; var instance = 2; var day = (from d in Enumerable.Range(1,DateTime.DaysInMonth(year,month)) let sample = new DateTime(year,month,d) where sample.DayOfWeek == dow select sample).Skip(instance-1).Take(1); While this works, and is easy enough to understand, I can imagine there is a more elegant way of making this calculation versus this brute force approach. Of course this doesn't touch on holidays such as Easter and the many other lunar based dates.

  • Sort a list numerically in Python

    So I have this list, we'll call it listA. I'm trying to get the [3] item in each list e.g. ['5.01','5.88','2.10','9.45','17.58','2.76'] in sorted order. So the end result would start the entire list over again with Santa at the top. Does that make any sense?   • Writing your own Makefile for OpenBSD ports

    I have an OpenBSD box running Python 2.6. I want to install py-setuptools, but that package is built against 2.5. I was curious as to what the Makefile for py-setuptools [Someone with rep, fix me please][http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/ports/devel/py-setuptools/Makefile?rev=1.13;content-type=text%2Fx-cvsweb-markup ] looks like, to see if it mentioned anything about Python 2.5 as a dependency. I did not find anything version-dependent. I typed make install in /usr/ports/devel/py-setuptools on a whim, and it blew up because of failed missing Python 2.5 dependency. That is expected. My question is, How do I modify the Makefile to build against Python 2.6 ? I came across this in the man pages [please fix me][http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=port-modules&sektion=5&arch=&apropos=0&manpath=OpenBSD+4.6#CORE+MODULES] , but I am still clueless how to specify what version to build against. Also, I dont see anything that actually installs the egg.

  • Triple Monitor Stand Recommendations

    I've got two Acer X233Hbid 23" Widescreen LCD Monitors from new egg back last summer, each weigh 10.5lbs a piece I Want to Buy a third Acer 23" (closest I've found is the X235 on Newegg, weighs in at 11.5 lbs) , one of the new ATI video cards that will output to 3 displays, and then a monitor stand that will let me use them in portrait mode like the image below. I found the following: $260 - ERGOTRON 33-323-200 DS100 Triple-Monitor Desk Stand and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this kind of setup and whether it would work for me or not..     I'm attempting to migrate my server from linux to a Solaris variant during a hardware upgrade. The machine is based around an Abit AN-M2 board which has an NForce chipset. I have what seems to be a chicken-and-egg problem of sorts: OpenSolaris 2009.06 does not recognize the NIC and I cannot compile the drivers for it as it also lacks gcc. I haven't tested as to whether or not I can mount an ext3 partition yet but its moot if there is no networking. Nexenta 3.0b3 recognizes the NIC but I cannot get the ext3 drives mounted due to FSWfspart refusing to install. I do not know much about Solaris but I wager this is due to the fact that Nexenta is based around Debian as well. While I am reusing the mobo/CPU combo, I did just spent a lot of money on the other hardware around it and would very much like to get it up and running smoothly and quickly. Does anyone have any suggestions that are not: Get a new mobo/CPU Run another OS Use alternate NIC

  • UFW: force traffic thru OpenVPN tunnel / do not leak any traffic

    I have VPN access using OpenVPN and try to create a safe machine that does not leak traffic over non-VPN interfaces. Using the firewall UFW I try to achieve the following: Allow Access from LAN to the machine's web-interface Otherwise only allow Traffic on tun0 (OpenVPN-Tunnel interface when established) Reject (or forward?) any traffic over other interfaces Currently I am using the following rules (sudo ufw status): To Action From -- ------ ---- 192.168.42.11 9999/tcp ALLOW Anywhere # allow web-interface Anywhere on tun0 ALLOW Anywhere # out only thru tun0 Anywhere ALLOW OUT Anywhere on tun0 # in only thru tun0 My problem is that the machine is initially not able to establish the OpenVPN-connection since only tun0 is allowed, which is not yet established (chicken-egg-problem) How do I allow creating the OpenVPN connection and from this point onward force every single packet to go thru the VPN-tunnel?

  • Enable roaming profile from group policy

    I've had a reasonable look around the AD policies but am I right in saying the only place that you can enable & define the group policy location is by editing the user, i.e. there isn't a group policy setting to (say) "Set the profile location to \myserver\users\%username%\profile" for all users in group XYZ? I suspect this might be because of chicken & egg, i.e. group policy is applied after the profile has been loaded and therefore can't specify the location. Cheers, Rob.
