• Poll: Require Semicolons and Forbid Tables?

  There are a few very serious but opinionated and subjective arguments that I know of. Two of them are Whether or not to use semicolons in the event they are optional. There is a vote as here that also includes reasons Whether or not to use tables for non tabular data. There more information here Since the semicolon question arises often in JavaScript and the tables thing in HTML then there are probably many who run into both. I sort of expect a person who is strict with semicolons also to be strict about avoiding tables. I will post four CW answers here to vote on. Please vote what you think is right. • Syntax error in SharePoint calculated column formula

  Is it possible to debug SharePoint calculated column formulas? I am trying with a really simple SharePoint calculated formula =IF([YTD]<[Budget], "OK", "Not OK"). This being a Danish installations of SharePoint I believe the fomula should look like this: =HVIS([YTD]<=[Budget]; "OK"; "Not OK") But this just leaves with the same syntax error or not supported error. I have tried all combinations of IF/HVIS, with/without the square brackets, comma/semicolon, single quotes/double quotes, but nothing works. The formula =YTD<=Budget works.

  I'm using both the supertab and snipmate plugins. Let's say I'm using snipmate to create an if statement structure. Once I'm done adding statements inside the if-statement, how can I quickly move the cursor after the if-statement. For example: if [ $a = "b" ]; then bla; fi If my cursor is right on the semicolon and I'm in insert mode. What is the fewest number of actions I can take to move the cursor to the line after the 'fi'? If I press tab, supertab just open an autocomplete window. Thanks

• Compilation hangs for a class with field double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308

  I have come across an interesting situation. A coworker committed some changes, which would not compile on my machine neither from the IDE (Eclipse) nor from a command line (Maven). The problem manifested in the compilation process taking 100% CPU and only killing the process would help to stop it. After some analysis the cause of the problem was located and resolved. It turned out be a line "double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308" (without semicolon at the end) in one of the interfaces. The following snipped duplicates it. public class WeirdCompilationIssue { double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308 } Why would compiler hang? A language edge case?

The concrete classes I want to store, all derive from BaseClass, therefore the idea to use it as constraint. The compiler complains that it expects a semicolon after the member name.   I'm having an issue with my PHP code trying to create events within MySQL. I begin with creating a string like this: $sql="DELIMITER $$ CREATE EVENT `$test_name` ON SCHEDULE EVERY $time1 $sched2 STARTS '$start_date $start_time' DO BEGIN "; $sql .="INSERT INTO blah (foo,bar); "; $sql .="END$$ DELIMITER ;" mysql_query($sql,$dbh); But I keep getting Syntax Errors starting with DELIMITER $$ CREATE EVENT. Without the semicolon behind (foo,bar); the event triggers with a unexecuted payload. Any ideas on where I'm going wrong? Thanks!

• Large static arrays are slowing down class load, need a better/faster lookup method

  I have a class with a couple static arrays: an int[] with 17,720 elements a string[] with 17,720 elements I noticed when I first access this class it takes almost 2 seconds to initialize, which causes a pause in the GUI that's accessing it. Specifically, it's a lookup for Unicode character names. The first array is an index into the second array. static readonly int[] NAME_INDEX = { 0x0000, 0x0001, 0x0005, 0x002C, 0x003B, ... static readonly string[] NAMES = { "Exclamation Mark", "Digit Three", "Semicolon", "Question Mark", ... The following code is how the arrays are used (given a character code). [Note: This code isn't a performance problem] int nameIndex = Array.BinarySearch<int>(NAME_INDEX, code); if (nameIndex > 0) { return NAMES[nameIndex]; } I guess I'm looking at other options on how to structure the data so that 1) The class is quickly loaded, and 2) I can quickly get the "name" for a given character code. Should I not be storing all these thousands of elements in static arrays?

• MySQL Import Database Error because of Extended Inserts

  Hello all, I'm importing a 400MB(uncompressed) MySQL database. I'm using BIGDUMP, and I am getting this error: Stopped at the line 387. At this place the current query includes more than 300 dump lines. That can happen if your dump file was created by some tool which doesn't place a semicolon followed by a linebreak at the end of each query, or if your dump contains extended inserts. Please read the BigDump FAQs for more infos. I believe the file does contain Extended Inserts, however I have no way to regenerate the database as it has been deleted from the old server. How can I import this database or convert it to be imported? Thanks for any help. Best Nick EDIT: It appears the only viable answer is to separate the extended inserts, but I still need help figuring out how to split the file as the answer below suggests. Please help. Thank you.

  I scripted the tables in my dev database using SQL 2008 - generate scripts option (Datbase-right click-Tasks-Generate Scripts) and ran it on the staging database, but the script throws the below error for each table Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1 Incorrect syntax near '('. Msg 319, Level 15, State 1, Line 15 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'with'. If this statement is a common table expression, an xmlnamespaces clause or a change tracking context clause, the previous statement must be terminated with a semicolon. • Is it possible to create a jdbc connection without a password (using postgresql 'trust')?

  I am using jdbc to connect to a postgresql database in a java application (actually the app is written in Groovy). I have postgresql set up to use the 'trust' authentication method. Is it possible to open a jdbc connection without specifying a password? • Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect()

  I have installed WAMP. I am using Tomcat 6 to run my PHP scripts. I am also using JavaBridge.war and I have copied my php scripts into \webapp\JavaBridge\project. I have removed the semicolon from php.ini file before the statements extension=php_mysqli.dll extension=php_mysql.dll I have added C:\wamp\bin into my PATH env variable. I have copied all dll's from C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\ext into C:\windows\system32 I am still getting this error. Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect() in C:\Program Files\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps\JavaBridge\project\pf_query.php on line 534 Note - I dont get this error when I run my PHP script from Apache 2.2.11 of the WAMP package.

• Oracle 10g multiple DELETE statements

  I'm building a dml file that first deletes records that may be in the table, then inserts records. Example: DELETE from foo where field1='bar'; DELETE from foo where fields1='bazz'; INSERT ALL INTO foo(field1, field2) values ('bar', 'x') INTO foo(field1, field2) values ('bazz', 'y') SELECT * from DUAL; When I run the insert statement by itself, it runs fine. When I run the deletes, only the last delete runs. Also, it seems to be necessary to end the multiple insert with the select, is that so? If so, why is that necessary? In the past, when using MySQL, I could just list multiple delete and insert statements, all individually ending with a semicolon, and it would run fine.

• Split SQL statements

  Hello, I am writing a backend application which needs to be able to send multiple SQL commands to a MySQL server. MySQL = 5.x support multiple statements, but unfortunately we are interfacing with MySQL 4.x. I am trying to find a way (hint: regex) to split SQL statements by their semicolon, but it should ignore semicolons in single and double quotes strings. http://www.dev-explorer.com/articles/multiple-mysql-queries has a very nice regex to do that, but doesn't support double quotes. I'd be happy to hear your suggestions.

  I'm working on my first database application. It is a WinForms application written in C# using a SQLite database. I've come across some problems, when a apostrophe is used, my SQLite query fails. Here is the structure of my queries. string SQL = "UPDATE SUBCONTRACTOR SET JobSite = NULL WHERE JobSite = '" + jobSite + "'"; For instance, if an apostrophe is used in the jobSite var, it offsets the other apostrophes in the command, and fails. So my questions are: 1. How do I escape characters like the apostrophe and semicolon in the above query example? 2. What characters do I need to escape? I know I should escape the apostrophe, what else is dangerous? Thanks for your help!

• Don’t learn SSDT, learn about your databases instead

  Last Thursday I presented my session “Introduction to SSDT” at the SQL Supper event held at the offices of 7 Digital (loved the samosas, guys). I did my usual spiel, tour of the IDE, connected development, declarative database development yadda yadda yadda… and at the end asked if there were any questions. One gentleman in attendance (sorry, can’t remember your name) raised his hand and stated that by attempting to evangelise all of the features I’d missed the single biggest benefit of SSDT, that it can tell you stuff about database that you didn’t already know. I realised that he was dead right. SSDT allows you to import your whole database schema into a new project and it will instantly give you a list of errors and/or warnings pertaining to the objects in your database. Invalid references (e.g a long-forgotten stored procedure that refers to a non-existent column), unnecessary 3-part naming, incorrect case usage, syntax errors…it’ll tell you about all of ‘em! Turn on static code analysis (this article shows you how) and you’ll learn even more such as any stored procedures that begin with “sp_”, WHERE clauses that will kill performance, use of @@IDENTITY instead of SCOPE_IDENTITY(), use of deprecated syntax, implicit casts etc…. the list goes on and on. I urge you to download and install SSDT (takes a few minutes, its free and you don’t need SQL Server or Visual Studio pre-installed), start a new project: right-click on your new project and import from your database: and see what happens: You may be surprised what you discover. • Using Fiddler with BizTalk's HTTP Adapter

  I'm working on an orchestration that's retrieving some data from a Java servlet.  The servlet takes a parameter string via HTTP post and returns POX (plain old XML, no SOAP here).  I was having trouble getting a valid response from the servlet when I was sending some test messages and wanted to see what my messages were looking like as they went across the wire.  Normally I was using WCF, I'd setup message logging, but since that's obviously not an option with the HTTP adapter, my thoughts turned to Fiddler.  A quick Google search turned up some promising results.  The posts I read all referred to using Fiddler with the SOAP adapter, but I thoght I could apply the same ideas to the HTTP adapter.  This led me to try setting the following context properties: HttpRequestMessage(HTTP.UseProxy) = true; HttpRequestMessage(HTTP.ProxyName) = "127.0.0.1"; HttpRequestMessage(HTTP.ProxyPort) = 8888; I rebuilt my orch, gac'd it, bounced my host and tried submitting a test message.  Fiddler was running but I didn't see any traffic show up.  I tried fully undeploying/redeploying my application and still, no traffic in Fiddler.  I was starting to think that BizTalk was ignoring the proxy settings.  To confirm this, I closed Fiddler and submitted a test message.  Sure enough, the orch ran to completion, proving that BizTalk was ignoring the proxy settings. I went back to my orch to see if there could be any other context proprties I needed to set.  I saw one that looked promising:  HTTP.UseHandlerProxySettings.  I set this to false, rebuilt my orch and this time when I submitted, I got an error message, which made sense, I didn't have Fiddler running.  I started up Fiddler, submitted another message and there it was, my HTTP traffic, just as I hoped.  And, I was quickly able to figure out what the problem was...I had forgotten to set HTTP.ContentType to application/x-www-form-urlencoded.

• Can't start httpd 2.4.9 with self-signed SSL certificate

  I cannot start the httpd 2.4.9 (tried 2.4.x too) on CentOS 6.5 with the simplest SSL config possible. AH00016: Configuration Failed I have tried to generate the simple certificate/key pair exactly as described in the httpd docs Unfortunately, I still get exact same errors as above. I've seen a bug report with the similar issue: https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=56410 But the openssl version I have is reported as working there. I've also tried to apply the patch from the report as well as build the latest 2.4.x branch with no success, I get the same errors as above. I have also tried to create a short chain of certificates and set the root CA certificate using SSLCertificateChainFile directive. That didn't help either, I get exact same errors as above. I'm not interested in setting up hardened security, etc. The only thing I need is to start httpd with the simplest SSL config possible to continue testing proxy config for the mod_proxy_wstunnel Had anybody encountered and solved this issue? Is my sequence for creating a self-signed certificate incorrect? I'd appreciate any help very much!

• Advice for a computer science sophomore in college?

  Hi Everyone! I'm a sophomore in college majoring in Computer Science and Math. I have always loved programming. I started programming in C when I was nine years old and over the years I've picked up Visual Basic, C#, Java, C++, JavaScript, Objective-C, Python, Ruby, elementary Haskell and elementary Erlang, and I learned Perl back in the day which I've mostly forgotten. I have not done much network programming. I have done CGI programming, but that was about six/seven years ago. I've done some socket programming and written (school) programs to do interprocess communication, which I understood and liked. I'm taking a course on client/server programming and another one on network security next semester, which I am really looking forward to. I'm seeking advice on how to proceed with future learning. I've mostly done application (mobile and desktop) development, not much of web development. I'd like to pick up some web development this coming semester. Since I know Ruby and Python, should I start by learning Django and/or Rails? Any other suggestions on starting web development? I have a good understanding of HTML and CSS. Also, I'd also like to know how hard it is to pick up and be good (read: productive) in functional programming languages coming from a purely structured/object oriented background? I've been reading up on Erlang and Haskell, and I'd like to know your opinions on whether it's worth my time trying to learn them. What about Lisp, Scheme and other functional languages? Any help/ideas would be really appreciated.

• SOA Checklist

  In a recent meeting, the customer brought up a valid question: “How do I know if a problem/system is a good candidate for using SOA (vs. using old but trusted techniques).  I put this checklist together.  If you can answer yes to 2 or more of these, it might well be a good candidate.  This is V1, and I will likely update it over time.  Comments (that are not spam or sales pitches) appreciated. Part of the conversation was also around the fact that SOA has two faces to it; one is around the obvious reuse possibilities. The other, that often gets forgotten, is that SOA provides goodness in terms of simplifying integration even where opportunities to reuse those integrations are small; at least the integrations are standards-based and more flexible.  I did not write a lot of verbiage about each of them, for example “Business Process” implies that there is a set of step-wise actions that need to take place in a coordinated fashion that include integrating with systems (and sometimes people for approvals and other human-only actions) in the process.
