• How would you design a question/answer view (iPhone SDK)

  I'm new to iPhone development, and I have a question on how to create a view for my application. The view should display a problem (using formatted/syntax highlighted text), and multiple possible answers. The user should be able to click on an answer to validate it. Currently, I am trying to use a UITableView embedding UIWebView as contentView. That allows me to display formatted text easily. The problem is that it is a real pain to compute and adjust the height of the cells. I have to preload the webview, call sizeToFit, get its height, and update the cell accordingly. This process should be done for the problem and the answers (as they are HTML formatted text too). It's such a pain that I am planning to switch to something else. I thought using only a big UIWebView and design everything in HTML. But I looked at some articles describing how to communicate between the HTML page and the ObjectiveC code. This seems to involve some awful tricks too... So... that's it, I don't really know what I should do. I guess some of you dealt with such things before, and would provide some greatly appreciated tips :)

• converting a timestring to a duration

  Hi, At the moment I am trying to read in a timestring formatted and create a duration from that. I am currently trying to use the boost date_time time_duration class to read and store the value. boost date_time provides a method time_duration duration_from_string(std::string) that allows a time_duration to be created from a time string and it accepts strings formatted appropriately ("[-]h[h][:mm][:ss][.fff]".). Now this method works fine if you use a correctly formatted time string. However if you submit something invalid like "ham_sandwich" or "100" then you will still be returned a time_duration that is not valid. Specifically if you try to pass it to a standard output stream then an assertion will occur. My question is: Does anyone know how to test the validity of the boost time_duration? and failing that can you suggest another method of reading a timestring and getting a duration from it? Note: I have tried the obvious testing methods that time_duration provides; is_not_a_date_time(), is_special() etc and they don't pick up that there is an issue. Using boost 1.38.0

• Cross-domain data access in JavaScript

  We have an ASP.Net application hosted on our network and exposed to a specific client. This client wants to be able to import data from their own server into our application. The data is retrieved with an HTTP request and is CSV formatted. The problem is that they do not want to expose their server to our network and are requesting the import to be done on the client side (all clients are from the same network as their server). So, what needs to be done is: They request an import page from our server The client script on the page issues a request to their server to get CSV formatted data The data is sent back to our application This is not a challenge when both servers are on the same domain: a simple hidden iframe or something similar will do the trick, but here what I'm getting is a cross-domain "access denied" error. They also refuse to change the data format to return JSON or XML formatted data. What I tried and learned so far is: Hidden iframe -- "access denied" XMLHttpRequest -- behaviour depends on the browser security settings: may work, may work while nagging a user with security warnings, or may not work at all Dynamic script tags -- would have worked if they could have returned data in JSON format IE client data binding -- the same "access denied" error Is there anything else I can try before giving up and saying that it will not be possible without exposing their server to our application, changing their data format or changing their browser security settings? (DNS trick is not an option, by the way).

• Dell Media Direct is rebooting my machine when it goes into sleep mode

  I've got a Dell Studio 1535 laptop, which shipped w/ Vista 32-bit. I've since formatted and installed Windows 7 64-bit. Everything has been fine for months, but recently, every time I leave my machine unattended and it goes to sleep, it wakes with the Dell Media Direct splash screen, and then goes to the "Windows was not shut down properly..." dialog that asks if you want to boot safe mode/start Windows normally/etc. The stupid button is also stuck on currently, but even when it is off, the problem still occurs. From the searching I've done, I've learned that the program is installed on its own partition, but I'm fairly certain I formatted everything.   Hello everyone I have a SD memory card which is of local manufacturer it allows to read & copy from it but not write as it is now write-protected so i want to format that card but could not. To format this card I have tried 1) DD command 2) mkfs -f vfat command 3) creating registry entry under storage device policy in window with write value 0 4) disk part command in window to clear attributes in which it show all attributes are clear ie no write protection 5) I format card in windows through control panel - administrative tools- computer management - disk management, then it show as formatted but when I tried to create new partition it give CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK error 6) I downloaded a format utility from transcend site and formatted first it shows write protected again doing format it formats and tells to remove and reinsert after reinsertion it shows the previous data as it is

• Spotlight Infinite Indexing issue (external data drive)

  This is an external drive, formerly a boot drive which is now in use only to access music files (sibelius, audio, midi, live, logic etc.) without transferring the data into a new boot system, partly because of the issue I am about to describe, but mostly because the majority of the data is mainly there for archival purposes. The user is a composer and prominent musician and needs to be able to rehash the data at will. I have tried several things - here is a list: - make complete filesystem clone with antonio diaz's ddrescue - run Disk Warrior on copy, repair whatever errors occurred - wipe out all ACLs on entire drive - set all permissions to the same value - wide open 777 - remove any system data (applications, system files, including hidden files to the best of my knowledge) by selecting only non-system/app data and using Carbon Copy Cloner to put only the data of interest onto a newly formatted drive - transfer data to newly formatted drive folder by folder, resetting the spotlight index in between adding each to observe for issues (interesting here is that no issues occurred except for in Documents folder - when I transferred only the Documents folder to a newly formatted drive on its own - no trouble. It appears almost as thought it may not be the content but the quantity or specific combination of data that results in problems) - use DataRescue to transfer the data to yet another newly formatted drive to expose any missed hidden files Between each of the above steps I stopped Spotlight (search for anything beginning with md in Activity Monitor - All Processes and quitting it), deleted the .Spotlight-V100 directory from the affected drive. Restart Splotlight indexing by adding drive to Spotlight privacy list and removing it. In each case the same issue occurs - Spotlight begins indexing normally (or so it seems), then the index estimated time increases, usually to 4 hours remaining. This is where it gets stuck and continues to predict 4 hours remaining but never finishes. Sometimes I can't eject the drive and have to quit the md.. processes from Activity Monitor to be able to eject the drive without Force Eject. Once I disconnect the drive after the 4 hours remaining situation - if I reattach it, Spotlight forever estimates remaining time and never gets going again. So there it is. It is apparently not a filesystem issue, not a permissions issue and not tied to any particular piece of hardware or protocol (used USB and FW drives). I have tried this on several machines (3 to be precise) and in 10.5.8 and 10.6.5. Simply disabling Spotlight on this volume is not an option because the owner has no clue where things are as the data on the volume dates back to music projects and compositions from 2003 and before. He needs to be able to query for results. Anyone got any ideas? ---update 2-6-11 Since I have not received any responses except the one below which appears to misunderstand my point, I am updating this post hoping to get more responses. I have used the terminal command sudo opensnoop -p PID where PID is the mdworker process ID to try and determine what Spotlight is doing and hopefully find the files it's having trouble with. Here's what happens: After indexing for a few hours, mdworker is gone. It no longer shows up in Activity Monitor under "All Processes" and the Terminal window with the opensnoop result stops moving. I then proceeded to execute the same command on mds to see what it was doing and here's what I get, repeatedly: 501 57 mds 21 / 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/Sno Leppard 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/Tiger 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/Leppard 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/Disk Warrior 501 57 mds 21 /Volumes/ONM Data These represent all the volumes currently mounted in the system. All except ONM Data, which is the one I am trying to index, are excluded from SPotlight indexing at the moment. The sequence above repeats over and over, with slight variation, sometimes skipping one of the volumes. Questions - what happened to mdworker? What is mds doing? I will let this run until tomorrow morning and throughout the day and monitor for any changes. Any input would be very much appreciated. Even if you're not sure what the ultimate answer is, please alert me to anything you think I may be missing. Hopefully at some point we will figure this out... Thanks, M __final edit__ I finally resolved the issue and here is how I did it. I used the terminal command "sudo opensnoop -p PID" where the PID is the process id of the processes I was monitoring. I was looking at all instances of mds and mdworker running in the system. After the third time through indexing the same data set (see info above), I contacted Apple and got to their highest level of support - they were flabbergasted as well. They advised me to install yet another default 10.6.6 system and try again. The same pattern repeated - mds and mdworker(s) would start indexing and eventually the spotlight icon would say 6 hours remaining and all mdworkers were gone, mds at 90% or so of CPU. But I did finally figure out that the first time mdworker stopped like that, the last file it touched was always in the same folder. I excluded that folder from spotlight search and the rest of the data set indexed within about 2 hours with no strange behavior or failures. I copied that folder to another machine and Spotlight barfed immediately. Exclude that folder and all is well again. I have no clue what is causing this behavior, still, but I did find a functional solution to the problem. Anyone with a similar problem - run opensnoop on all instances of mds and mdworker and wait patiently for wdworker to exit. Look at the last file it touched and exclude the enclosing folder from being indexed. I was able to repeat the issue and solution on 2 different installs and 2 different copies of the data set. Hope this helps. If we find an actual cause of the folder being such a problem (it is called MICHAEL BRECKER RECORD SOLOS and contains almost 1 GB of audio related files - performer, live, SD2 - things like that), I will edit again to let you all know. • My computer's dying :(

  Hi All I have a sweet computer and have never had any real problems with it until now. I recently formatted my computer and all was well. But now my monitor randomly flickers. The monitor will just go black for about a second or two, then it'll return back to its normal state with all the stuff still on the screen. This is getting progressively worse. Another problem that has started is my computer randomly restarts. (I've managed to prevent it from restarting by removing the check in Automatically Restart from the Startup and Recovery Dialog. But I know this doesn't solve the problem). It also completely freezes up on me. One last thing, this morning I got a big blue screen. I can't remember what it said, but if it happens again I will take note of it and repost. Or if I can find some kind of a log file containing that bluescreen error I will post. I have checked all cords, and they're all fine. Nothing's loose. My computer isn't overheating either. I've taken the case off for 3 whole days and haven't used the computer for those 3 days, which has had no effect. I've checked the connections inside and nothing's loose there either. I know there's nothing wrong with my monitor because my friend has 2 computers and it works perfectly on those computers. I don't understand how my computer could suddenly become so unstable. I'm almost certain that I have no viruses; I full-scan my pc everyday for nastys, and have strict firewall settings. Anyway, I don't see how it could be a virus anyway simply due to the fact that I had these problems right after I formatted, and before I even had the chance to install or copy anything or even connect to the internet. I know it has nothing to do with the way I formatted the computer too, I've been fixing computers for years. Sorry for rambling on, just making sure I don't leave anything out. Has anybody else had this problem? Can somebody please try to help me with this? Thank you :)

• How to remove line breaks (or carriage returns) only from certain parts of a block of text?

  Whenever I copy formatted text from a PDF file which is formatted to have line breaks (or carriage returns), I need to find a way to remove these line breaks without removing the paragraph format. To do this I need to use RegEx (Regular expressions) to only remove the line breaks which aren't preceded by a period. So for example, if a string of text has a line break right after a period, that is obviously almost always a legitimate line break which will start a new paragraph. If a string of text has a line break mid-word or after a word with no period, it's simply part of the bad formatting I need to get rid of. My problem is that I don't know how to use RegEx to make it only remove the ^p tags in word or CRLF or line breaks in any format under the conditions that it omits ones following a period.

• What GUI systems let you copy text with formatting preserved, via clipboard?

  If you select and copy a text from Internet Explorer and paste it in Miscrosoft Word, the formatting is preserved. If you do that in Opera or Firefox in Windows, it's lost, IIRC. I use Gnome desktop in Linux, and formatting is preserved nowhere, which is very inconvenient. Even if desktop lets me copy formatted text, I can't post it into any web form: WISYWIG Javascript forms will strip formatting and make me walk through the whole text and fix it manually. I don't know how things are in Macs. Is there a desktop + browser + editor set that allow passing formatted text consistently throughout?

• GParted tells me my partition has 1.30 GiB used space but I cannot access its contents

  I've a ext4 partition (/dev/sda7) for my Linux. And, another (/dev/sda5) for keeping my data. When I installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I set the mount point of /dev/sda5 to "/" and that of /dev/sda5 to "/data". GParted tells me that 1.30 GiB out of 70.12 GiB of /dev/sda5 has been used up. But, the mounted directory "/data" is empty. So, it looks like that my data is there but I cannot access it. Besides, when I set the mount point, I didn't check the "format" box. So, it shouldn't have been formatted. How can I check whether the partition has been formatted? How can I recover my files?

• Hard Drive missing drive space

  I have a 500 GB hard drive which I previously attached to my Mac. I detached the drive without going through the eject procedure. When I did this a message showed up, which of course I did not read. I could not use the drive until I formatted again. Now, when I attach the drive it says it is formatted NTFS and has 280.39 of 500 GB free. When I open the drive in Windows Explorer, Finder, or in Linux, is only shows a handful of files totaling 54 MB. How can I find out what is taking up all the space.

• NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s)

  I got a new Seagate 4TB harddrive formatted with ntfs using parted /dev/sda > mklabel gpt > mkpart pri 1 -1 mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda1 When copying files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12MB/s. The harddrive should be capable of atleast 100MB/s. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. The system has a AMD dualcore. This is the output of parted /dev/sda unit s print: Model: ATA ST4000DM000-1F21 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 7814037168s Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 2048s 7814035455s 7814033408s pri The used kernel is 3.5.0-23-generic. The ntfs-3g versions I tried are ntfs-3g 2012.1.15AR.1 (ubuntu 12.04 default) and the newest version ntfs-3g 2013.1.13AR.2. When formatted with ext4 I get good write speeds with about 140MB/s. How can I fix the writespeed?

• Installed Windows 7 without formatting disk? Possible?

  I've just installed Win7 but I'm little confused. When booting from XP cd, there is an option to format hard drive. After choosing which partition to format, format process takes usually not less than hour (depends on size of partition), but when I clicked on Format when in Windows 7 installation interface, I received some message (I cant remember what was it, but it was not any error message or something like that) and that was it. After that I choose to install Windows 7 and installation began. "Expanding Windows Files" was the longest process of installation. Was that the part when the hard drive was formatted? I don't understand what happened? Is it possible that my hard drive was not formatted but still installation was successful?

• type mismatch errors querying data from spreadsheet

  In EXCEL 2010 I am trying to querying data in another spreadsheet. The data range in the source sheet/ file is named (DATABASE). The Date field in the database is formatted as short date and when I query the date without criteria I get a different format of European datesYYYY-MM-DD with time in the results. When I use criteria and a specific date in the date field criteria grid using English format MM-DD-YYYY I get results. When I set parameters looking at destination file cells for the date for the parameters, I get Type mismatch EVEN THOUGHT THE CELLS ARE Short date Formatted. This worked perfectly in my 2003 version of EXCEL. Now I am running Win 7 -64 and Office 2010 Pro. Why does the query throw Mismatch with cell references for the parameters but accepts hard value dates in any date format? (MSQRY32.EXE)

• Windows 8.1 wants to format a USB stick with an unusual but valid GPT partitioning scheme, why?

  I have a USB stick formatted with GPT partitions. Some of the partitions are ext2, some are ext4, some are custom and funky. However, there is also a standard EFI partition, and a standard vfat partition. In Windows 7, both the EFI partition and the standard VFAT partition are visible and mount normally. But Windows 8.1 prompts to reformat the drive when it's inserted. I'm not surprised if Win 8 hides the EFI partition, but I didn't expect it to prompt for reformatting. I want to leave existing partitions alone, but have a VFAT partition that Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 will mount and display normally. Exactly how does Win 8 decide if a device needs to be formatted?

  I have been banging my head against the wall with this one for nearly a week now, and am no closer than I was the first day. I have a form that has 8 columns and a variable number of rows which I need to email to the client in a nicely formatted email. The form submits the needed fields as a multidimensional array. But, I can't find any examples that will generate that type of table! It seems like this should be something fairly straightforward, but I just can't locate an example that works the way I need it too.

• Formatting Dates, Times and Numbers in ASP.NET

  Formatting is the process of converting a variable from its native type into a string representation. Anytime you display a DateTime or numeric variables in an ASP.NET page, you are formatting that variable from its native type into some sort of string representation. How a DateTime or numeric variable is formatted depends on the culture settings and the format string. Because dates and numeric values are formatted differently across cultures, the .NET Framework bases its formatting on the specified culture settings. By default, the formatting routines use the culture settings defined on the web server, but you can indicate that a particular culture be used anytime you format. In addition to the culture settings, formatting is also affected by a format string, which spells out the formatting details to apply. The .NET Framework contains a bounty of format strings. There are standard format strings, which are typically a single letter that applies detailed formatting logic. For example, the "C" format specifier will format a numeric type as a currency value; the "Y" format specifier displays the month name and four-digit year of the specified DateTime value. There are also custom format strings, which display a apply a very specific formatting rule. These custom format strings can be put together to build more intricate formats. For instance, the format string "dddd, MMMM d" displays the full day of the week name followed by a comma followed by the full name of the month followed by the day of the month. For more involved formatting scenarios, where neither the standard or custom format strings cut the mustard, you can always create your own formatting extension methods. • ext4 jbd2 journaling active even on empty filesystem

  I have been having several issues with my ext4 filesystems that seem to be due to jbd2 journaling. I made a related post here and am rephrasing it with the hope that someone may be able to help. For a minimal example, I start with an empty 8gb USB stick and use gparted to create one ext4 partition. The command used by gparted when creating the ext4 file system is: mkfs.ext4 -j -O extent -L DataTraveler8gb /dev/sde1 I check the filesystem with gparted: e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sde1 and I mount it: sudo mount /dev/sde1 /media/test The disk is empty, but the journaling is very active on this disk (/dev/sde1). The other disks are ext4 SSDs formatted similarly. A snapshot of iotop: % sudo iotop -oPa Total DISK READ: 0.00 B/s | Total DISK WRITE: 2027.21 K/s PID PRIO USER DISK READ DISK WRITE SWAPIN IO COMMAND 262 be/3 root 0.00 B 56.00 K 0.00 % 0.18 % [jbd2/sda1-8] 29069 be/3 root 0.00 B 0.00 B 0.00 % 0.16 % [jbd2/sde1-8] 891 be/3 root 0.00 B 4.00 K 0.00 % 0.03 % [jbd2/sdc1-8] What is jbd2 doing with /dev/sde1? If I follow the same steps with a larger 2Tb disk, iotop indicates this empty disk is constantly being written to by jbd2 at the rate of Mb/s as soon as I mount it. On the other disks, which have the OS and /home, I have tried to find if any files are being modified by processes to cause this behavior but couldn't find any. I also moved many of the disk intensive process to use a tmpfs. And used noatime. I have another non-SSD hard disk on this machine, /dev/sdb, that is also ext4 but was not formatted by gparted (given to me by a coworker). It does not appear in iotop. So I am assuming there an issue with gparted. Any suggestions are appreciated. Also any tips on how to modify existing partitions to fix the issue without having to start from scratch would be great. There are some posts related to jbd2 but they didn't help (eg. here).

A mom and pop online store could integrate Twitter such that a new tweet was added each time a customer completed an order. And ELMAH, a popular open-source error logging library, can be configured to send error notifications to Twitter. Twitter's API is implemented over HTTP using the design principles of Representational State Transfer (REST). In a nutshell, inter-operating with the Twitter API involves a client - your application - sending an XML-formatted message over HTTP to the server - Twitter's website. The server responds with an XML-formatted message that contains status information and data. • Banshee music file copy to Mac iPhone 4s ios5.1 not permanent

  In Ubuntu 12.04 - When I drag .mp3 files from Banshee 2.6 to my Mac-formatted iPhone 4s ios5.1: a. Banshee says it's syncing with the phone, updating the media database, and the filecount on the phone is incremented; b. The files show up under the device in Banshee and I can play them; c. I can see them on the iPhone in a file browser; d. I can navigate to the iPhone filesystem in a terminal and create a file, so I know I have write permissions. When I disconnect the device in Banshee, it again tells me it's syncing the phone and updating the media database, but I can't find the songs on the phone in iTunes - they are not there when I reconnect the phone to my computer. Am I just being deceived by gvfs? I haven't been able to find a recent post indicating the status of syncing ios5.x devices with Banshee, RhythmBox, etc... Can someone tell me if this should work? Also, I wonder if my iPhone needs to be formatted/initialized by iTunes for Windows, since it has been managed on a Mac? I solved a syncing problem with an older ipod classic which had been managed by iTunes on a Mac, by re-initializing it under iTunes for Windows - perhaps an hfs+ issue. Thanks for any help.

• Representation of data in application versus database

  I'm going to make an application that will be given data to put in a database. The data will for the most part be the same, but the way it is formatted will vary a lot (could be in anything from text files to .xls to .doc). I'm not a very experienced developer, but I can see some potential issues and I want to minimize them. First off I have decided to use the DAO pattern, so that I can easily support new file formats or file suddenly formatted in different ways. What I really wonder about though, is how I should manage the data itself within my application. I'm thinking that the database DAO should have models representing each table of the database with the same relations between them, to make the uploading process easy. But should the filesystem DAO's have to use the same models? I can imaging that when the database changes, the change will suddenly propagate throughout the entire system, all DAOs and models alike. And that is obviously a bad thing. I'm a little bit tired and out of time. Will update with what ever questions you have. Thanks!
