• IIS 6.0 FTP Folder Permissions

  I have a IIS FTP website setup like this \ftp\users\domain\public\public Software that runs on clients computers logs into the FTP server by specifying domain\public and moving to public, it then uploads or downloads files / folders into that area. I want to restrict permissions on \ftp\users\domain\public so that nothing/nobody can write files or folders here, only to \ftp\users\domain\public\public. I setup the NTFS permissions of the folder to remove domain\users, public and server\users to not have modify right, yet I can still upload/modify files. I have disabled inheritance from the parent folder of \ftp\users\domain\public as well. Any ideas on what I'm missing here? P.S I know this is a stupid setup and makes no sense, it's some bizarre legacy application that I need to migrate to a safer environment until it can be replaced.

  Hi, I am new here so I am might be asking a question which has already been answered [however I can't see it in the suggested answers above] I manage a network which is split into a parent domain and a child domain. Recently I have been looking at when to migrate to Windows 7. The child domain users [authenticated by the 2008 based (child) domain] get the redirected Desktop [as expected] but not the Start Menu. The parent domain users [authenticated by the 2003 based (parent) domain] get neither desktop nor Start Menu redirected. Does anyone here know how to successfully redirect the properties for these users as desired? Many thanks.

• FTP proxy that translates from passive to active

  Is it possible to install a proxy server that will transform passive ftp to active ftp? Details of my problem: I would like to deploy my web sites using Visual Studio's built in publish web site function. The problem is that my web hotel only supports active ftp, and unfortunately Visual Studio 2010 has a bug, so the publish function only works with passive ftp. My idear is to install a tiny local ftp proxy, that is able to transform passive ftp mode to active mode. I would then enter localhost as the publish server in Visual Studio, and the proxy would do the actual uploading of the files to my web hotel. Visual Studio bug report: Unable to publish website to FTP server that doesn't allow passive mode.

• SQL SERVER – Right Aligning Numerics in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

  SQL Server Management Studio is my most favorite tool and the comfort it provides to user is sometime very amazing. Recently I was retrieving numeric data in SSMS and I found it is very difficult to read them as they were all right aligned. Please pay attention to following image, you will notice that it is not easier to read the digits as we are used to read the numbers which are right aligned. I immediately thought before I go for any other tricks I should check the query properties. I right clicked on query properties and I found following option. I checked option Right align numeric values and it just worked fine. Do you have any other similar tricks which do you practice often. I prefer to also include column headers in the result set as it gives me proper perspective of which column I have selected.   Hi there, For some reason when I try to use "append" while inside an FTP script, the ftp client appears to hang. I've tried all sorts of different variations (for example, including the destination filee and not, using quotes and not), and all I ever get is a "No such file or directory" error (and I KNOW it's there) or it hangs on an 200 Request OK and never does anything. ftp> open ibm.some_server Connected to ibm.some_server 230 USER1 is logged on. Working directory is "USER1.". Remote system type is MVS. ftp> cd 'Z.TABS.' 250 "Z.TABS." is the working directory name prefix. ftp> append 'SAMASCPY' 'SAMASCPY': No such file or directory ftp> append SAMASCPY 200 Port request OK. • SQL SERVER – Read Only Files and SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

  Just like any other Developer or DBA SQL Server Management Studio is my favorite application. Any any moment of the time I have multiple instances of the same application are open and I am working on it. Recently, I have come across a very interesting feature in SSMS related to “Read Only” files. I believe it is a little unknown feature as well so decided to write a blog about the same. First create a read only SQL file. You can make any file read by Right Click >> Properties >> Select Attribute Read Only. Now open the same file in SQL Server Management Studio. You will find that besides the file name there is a small ‘lock’ icon. This small icon indicates that the file is read only. Now let us attempt to edit the read only file. It will let us edit the file any way we want, however when we attempt to save it, it gives following pop-up value. The options in the pop-up are self explanatory and I liked it. The goal of the read only file is to prevent users to make un-intended changes. However, when a user should have complete control over the user file. User should be aware that the file is read only but if he wants to edit the file or save as a new file the choices should be present in front of it and the pop-up menu precisely captures the same. Now let us check option related to this feature in SSMS. Go to Menu >> Options >> Environment >> Documents You will find the third option which is “Allow editing of read-only files; warn when attempt to save”. In the above scenario it was already checked. Let us uncheck the same and do the same exercise which we have done earlier. I closed all the earlier window to avoid confusion. With the new option selected when I attempt to even modify the Read Only file, it gives me totally different pop up screen. It gives me an option like “Edit In-Memory”, “Make Writeable” etc. When you select “Edit In-Memory” it allows you to edit the file and later you can save as new file – just like the earlier scenario which we have discussed. . If clicked on the Make Writeable it will remove the restriction of the Read Only and file can be edited as pleased. • Plesk FTP not working but SFTP and Shell is working

  I am facing a strange problem. The FTP on my Plesk VPS is not working. Whenever I try to connect, FileZilla FTP client says: Status: Resolving address of xxxxxxxxxxxxx.com Status: Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:21... Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Error: Could not connect to server So, it's not even going to the step of asking username/password. So, it's something else. The SFTP on port 22 is working fine. Also, I can successfully do shell access and run commands. But, I NEED FTP access too on port 21. I have searched everywhere but can not find any setting to enable it. This is the Plesk version info: Parallels Plesk Panel version 9.5.2 Operating system Linux 2.6.26.8-57.fc8 CPU GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Any help is appreciated. [EDIT]: The firewall is not blocking it. I have checked it on server and there are absolutely no blocking rule. Firewall states: All incoming/outgoing connections are accepted on FTP And on client-side (my PC), I can connect to other FTP servers so this is not an issue in my PC's firewall. Moreover, I can not even connect to the FTP from online FTP clients like net2ftp.

• Can't connect to Sql Server 2008 named instance

  I just installed Sql 2008 Express on a new server running Windows Server 2008. I know Sql is working properly, because I can connect to the db fine locally, on the server. I cannot connect to it from a client machine though, neither by IP address nor by machine name (iporname\instance). I know I have the correct IP address, because I am RDCing into the server to perform all this configuration and setup, and if I ping the server name, it is resolving to the correct IP address as well. On the server, I have set up an inbound firewall exception allowing all traffic on any port on any protocol to sqlservr.exe. In SSMS, in server > Properties > Connections Allow remote connections to this server is enabled. In Sql Server Configuration Manager, TCP/IP is enabled in both the Protocols for <instance> and the Client Protocols sections. I looked in the Windows logs, but don't see anything about connections being denied or dropped. As far as I can see, I have everything set right, but cannot connect from a client machine. The client CAN connect to other Sql 2008 Express servers okay, so I know the client configuration is correct. Any ideas where else I can look for info of what/where/how this connection is dropping, greatly apprecaited! The error being returned by the client is: **TITLE: Connect to Server** Cannot connect to [MY.IP.ADD.RSS]\[MYINSTNAME]. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. • Music server + Banshee

  I'm currently trying to figure out some kind of set-up for my music collection. The music collection is located on my "main PC" and I'm using Banshee to play/manage the music. Since I'm often at a different location where I use my laptop I have a FTP server running on my main PC, use curlftpfs to mount the music in /home/username/Music and sync the Banshee DB/configuration via Dropbox. The problem at the moment is that Banshee skips songs very often when the connection is a little slower. I've been looking at some servers like Ampache but they are not really an option since they don't let me use Banshee (which means I have no ability to change metadata or rate songs). Syncing the whole collection to my laptop isn't an option either because of its size. It would be great if you had some ideas how to make my current set-up more reliable or maybe know an alternative.

• Possible Hack with FTP - What are the solutions?

  I was reading the FTP rfc and hence had this idea. Suppose there are several public ftp servers that allow anonymous user login. I open a control connection on port 21 to each of these servers. Now suppose there is a web server a.com with ip address x.y.z.w listening on port 80. FTP allows a user to specify the host on which the data connection is to be setup. So a user specifies the host and port number of a.com web server. Now the ftp server starts sending data to a.com for which it is not a valid HTTP request and hence it is rejected. But a.com notes that the invalid http request came from a public ftp server and not my ip address. Can this not lead to a distributed attack by utilizing all public ftp servers. worse still the the data being sent by ftp server could be a valid http request which could trigger a.com to send a file back to the ftp server. Is there a solution for this or is it no problem at all.

I have been considering using Vim as my text editor of choice in XP but would like to know any text editor and accompanying shell/FTP/Putty/SSH (or whatever you may call it) program that can access those files in my Ubuntu server. It is better if the shell can be called or is bundled inside the text editor. I would like to know your combinations (text editor + shell) and your experiences on it when you were able to develop your Rails projects on that combination. Cheers!

• FTP Issue when connecting to a debian machine from windows

  I have a .net application which copies bunch of files to a specific FTP folder on a debian machine on periodical basis, ftp folder has 755 mod, owner of the directory is the ftp username that I authenticate in .net application. So far I tested this application with bunch of debian boxes, my initial attempts generally fail with following message if I try it with a debian machine that I haven't tried it before: "remote server returned an error 550 File unavailable" When I see this error, I log onto another debian machine on my network, and I try FTP'ing the debian box that returns the error message from command line. I generally "put" a very small file to the folder in question, right after that windows application starts copying files successfully via FTP. It is as if my command line ftp operation fixes the problem and makes debian compatible with my .net application. I checked permissions before and after the problem, it doesn't look like what I did changed anything, I am at loss understanding why this problem occurs and why it is fixed with my silly hack. Can anybody tell me where to look at next to fix this extremely annoying issue?

• Expression web ftp: Stuck at "Listing subsites"

  When I try to use the Expression Web 4 built-in ftp I see the message ""Listing subsites in.." and soon afterward "passive ftp not available". If I switch to active, I get "active ftp not available". There are no subsites. It is a simple directory with one html page. Backend is a normal IIS6 server. FTP to the same IP with other FTP clients works fine! Any idea if Expression web has some specific requirements? It is our own dedicated server. (Please no tips to use another tool, for this specific project Expression Web is a requirement).
