• Website Hosting/Registration [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am planning to launch a website down soon. I wanted to know what solutions are available for hosting and registration. Starting with domain registration. Any site you have used/preferred ? I am considering either godaddy or 123reg. Does it even make any difference which you choose? Is there any fine print i need to worry about. I am based in UK , not sure if that helps in resolving any issues if encountered. Does my hosting need to be done at the site i purchased my registration? If not , will there be any transfer fees if i change my hosting? Can I just register the name now and worry about hosting later? At the moment, I plan to have it up and running using either some sort of a tool or a template and perhaps put the bells and whistles down the line. I understand 123 has its own builder tool available, There are a few solutions suggested like wordpress,drupal & jhoomla... I am a C++ developer , not a web programmer, but I do feel the need to open the hood up and make changes if i see fit. So I guess I am looking for a solution where I can easily drag-drop widgets I need and when the time comes customize it. Which CMS would you recommend. Extras: What extras do you need to get , I was suggested to get hold of whois privacy to keep the spambots away, anything else you guys would recommend I keep my eyes open before I sign the dotted line.

• Move Joomla website to new folder

  I currently have a website. I have created a new folder on the website called V2. Under this folder I have installed Joomla and configured my new looking site. I now want to make V2 the default website. I could point the website to that V2 directory however I have other folders under the current root website that I need to keep. How can I transfer V2 to the root of my website? Is it just a case of copying all the files?

• Naming your website longname.com vs shortcatchy.net vs shortcatchy.info

  I'm designing a website that will basically be a social network for sharing information. I have the domain $$$$d.net and the same domain $$$$d.info where $$$$ is a word (that runs into the d) pertaining to the purpose of the site . The .com of this domain was already taken, but they've got nothing showing. They only have a not reached google error showing ie. dont seem to be trying to sell it either. I also have the long name of the site $$$$------&&&&&&&&&.com where the words $$$$ and &&&&&&&&& would contribute relevant seo to the site. In fact the word $$$$------ would also if a one letter spelling mistake is recognised at all by google, which i doubt but am unsure about. But as a brandname the $$$$------ word still works relevantly. Which do you think is a better choice to use? The short catchy name with the .info for relevance to information The .net which is more familiar than .info but slightly less relevant maybe. (But i think net as in network still works cos as i said it will be a social networking site). The long, .com domain which has more SEO plus a pun albeit on a spelling mistake. I know its kind of a subjective question and also hard to answer without knowing the name (which I've obfuscated because I'm only in initial design stage) but nevertheless im interested in what some of you guys think.

• SEO on an existing platform

  I'm given the task to increase user visits and conversions on for a recruitment website. Conversions would be interested job seekers submitting their CV. The manager would first like to increase the organic search results and optimize the website before starting with targeted campaigns. The problem is, they are using a proprietary recruitment software platform which I can barely add changes to. For example, the url's all look like dynamic url's without any semantic meaning and the markup is almost completely build automatically by that platform. I'm also confident that the lack of submitted CV's is due to a bad user experience of the website (no incentives or clear CTA to register) Besides optimizing the static texts and page titles, is there anything I can do? • Parsing a website's source

  I want to create an application and maybe upload it to the play store but I am not sure if that what my app does is legal or not. I am downloading a page's source from a website to get some information I need. For example if I download a page about the song "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin and parse this page source to get the song's name, maybe a link to an image and the lyrics. Would that be illegal or can I display these information to my users without getting any problem? Also the website says it's an "open 'wiki-style' [...].It's completely user built by people like you and used every day by fans and developers alike."

• Are there any additional considerations to make when designing a site structure if you plan to use persistent connection technologies?

  As the title states, I'm thinking of making a simple-card-game based website, using persistent connection technology (Something like signalR) for the actual game part of it. I've never planned a site to use this technology, and wondering for those who have, are there any additional things that need to be taken into consideration for the site structure? • Http handler for classic ASP application for introducing a layer between client and server

  I've a huge classic ASP application where in thousands of users manage their company/business data. Currently this is not multi-user so that application users can create users and authorize them to access certain areas in the system. I'm thinking of writing a handler which will act as middle man between client and server and go through every request and find out who the user is and whether he is authorized to access the data he is trying to. For the moment ignore about the part how I'm going to check the authorization and all that stuff. Just want to know whether I can implement a ASP.net handler and use it as middle man for the requests coming for a asp website? I just want to read the url and see what is the page user is trying to access and what are the parameters he is passing in the url the posted data. Is this possible? I read that Asp.net handler cannot be used with asp website and I need to use isapi filter or extensions for that and that can be developed only c/c++. Can anybody through some light on this and guide me whether I'm in the right direction or not?

• How to fix this navigation issue in my site?

  First off I use webs.com for the creation of my site. I have a very basic layout. List of links of the left and content on the right with a heading up top. Now in my list of links every link is an article that I wrote, I have about 25 links going down the left hand side of my site. Problem is when I try out new themes that support horizontal navigation as opposed to vertical navigation I get either a messy overflow of links Or a link called "more" which lists the rest of the articles in a drop down-list across my site. What I wish I had was a simple horizontal navigation like" "home, about, articles" and when the user clicks on articles it would then bring them to a page containing all my articles there. I would prefer it to be in a table like display. That way is not a long list. Anyways any ideas on how I can fix this issue im having? Please let me know if you need more information.

• Is having your own website important?

  How necessary or important is it? I try to keep a running list of blogs or sites to follow, but a lot of the time I pull up someone's profile and notice there isn't anything there. Is it really important? I understand are different levels of programming (from C/C++ system programmers to Rails and even Haskell and J) and not everyone works in a language easily worked with for web based applications. Not everything is web-centric, however with the advent of many popular and sometimes free services I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a majority of programmers to have a personal site.

• Add copyright notice to a website

  Not really a programming question, but I find it related. If not (or you find this question too subjective), please tell me, yell at me, swear at me, kick me in the nuts, or just vote to close :) I've read some questions and answers here on SO about adding copyright notices, but not the specific ones I am looking for. I want to add a copyright notice to a website I created. Something like (c) Me 2010. All rights reserved. I am aware that everything written by someone is automatically copyrighted (if I'm not mistaken and perhaps depending on country laws). I see some sites use the following format for this (c) Me 2009-2010. However for me that makes no sense to add an 'end-date' to the notice. I am aware I can code to update the notice every year, but I just find it strange. Or is it just me? Another question is: I also use copyrighted code from others (they are all mentioned in the credits incl. links to their licenses ofc) on my site. Would it still be OK to add the copyright notice to the site with only Me in it? So to sum it up I have 2 questions: What is THE RIGHT WAYTM of adding a copyright notice on a website (or code or whatever)? If there is one. Is it allowed to copyright code with other copyrighted code within it?

• Homepage not showing on Google

  About six weeks ago my homepage (mayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) disappeared from the google organic search for "kayaking pembrokeshire" despite it having been number 2 within a few weeks of it's launch last summer. My previous site (www.mikemayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) had been 2nd for about six years and has 301 redirects for all pages to the new site. Google toolbar still rates the homepage as 3/10 and the domain is still showing in search results, just not the homepage. A little research suggests that this is most likely to be due to an issue with google treating two pages as identical content (one with www. and one with not) since the changes in their algorithms around that time and that the way to fix this is to add some code somewhere. This makes sense to me as my print advertising doesn't have the www part of the address. I have cpanel access but a limited knowledge on web coding, having picked things up as I've gone along and paid for designers etc., when needed. Would someone be able to let me know where I have to go to add the code and what code I need to add to redirect the crawlers to one page? Or is there another issue that is causing this? • How to make a text search template?

  I am not really sure what to call this, but I am looking for a way to have a "template" for my code to go by when searching for text. I am working on a project where a summary for a piece of text is supplied to the user. I want to allow the user to select a piece of text on the page so that the next time they come across a similar page I can find the text. For instance, lets say somebody goes to foxnews.com and selects the article like in the image below. Then whenever they go to any other foxnews.com article I would be able to identify the text for the article and summarize it for them. But an issue I see with this is for a site like Stack Exchange where you have multiple comments to be selected (like below) which means that I would have to be able to recursively search for all separate pieces of text. Requirements Be able to keep pieces of text separate from each other. Possible Issues DIV's may not contain ids, classes, or names. A piece of text may span across multiple DIVs How to recognize where an old piece of text ends and a new begins. How to store this information for later searching?

• Best way to lay-out the website when sections of it are almost identical

  so, I have a minisite for the mobile application that I did. The mobile application is a public transport (transit) schedule viewer for a particular city (let's call it Foo), and I'm trying to sell it via that minisite. I publish that minisite in www.myawesomeapplication.com/foo/. It has the usual "standard" subpages, like "About", "Compatible phones", "Contact", etc. Now, I have decided to create analogue mobile application for other cities, Bar and Baz. These mobile applications (products) would be almost identical to the one for the Foo city, thus the minisites for those would (should) look very similar too (except for some artwork and Foo = Bar replacement). The question is: what do you think would be the most logical way to lay-out the website in this situation, both from the business and search engine perspective? In other words, should I just duplicate the /foo/ website to /bar/ and /baz/, or would it be better to try to create a single website under root path (/)? I don't want search engine penalties for almost-duplicate information under /foo/, /bar/ and /baz/, and also I don't want a messy, non-localized website (I guess the user is more likely to buy something if he/she sees "This-and-that is the application for NYC, the city you live in", not "This-and-that is the application for city A, city B, ..., NYC, ..., and city Z.")

• Should I use the factory design pattern for every class?

  I've been writing a website in PHP. As the code becomes more complex, I keep finding problems that can be solved using the factory design pattern. For example: I've a got a class Page which has subclasses HTMLPage, XMLPage, etc. Depending on some input I need to return an object of either one of these classes. I use the factory design pattern to do this. But as I encounter this problem in more classes, I keep having to change code which still initiates an object using its constructor. So now I'm wondering: is it a good idea to change all code so that it uses the factory design pattern? Or are there big drawbacks? I'm currently in a position to change this, so your answers would be really helpful.

What does it mean? I need your comment and responses on these points. Is not using JavaScript and switching to libraries like jQuery worth it? UPDATE 1 : whats the meaning of Unobtrusive JavaScript with jQuery ? and yes it does not say we should use libraries but we should have them on external files for that reason i asked my question.

• Should I concentrate on writing code for money or my studies while in college?

  I am college student of Software Engineering. My worries are that while I am concentrating on my studies, my peers are getting down with the code (e.g. HTML, ASP, PHP, etc) to earn money. Should I be worried that I am not doing coding like them? I was asked to be Microsoft Student Partner but I refused because the person what was doing before me told it was just arranging events. • Specific website not working on my connection [closed]

  For some reason, the website http://www.woopra.com/ doesn't work well (shows as plain html, no css/images/JS) on my computer and my Android tablet (they both share the same internet connection). It does however, work on my WP 7.5 phone (3G). When I try to set a wifi hotspot and use the tablet it still doesn't work (tried to clean cache). I tried FF, Chrome and IE (multiple versions). What is going on here? I'm clueless! Thanks.

  Our company Coscend has built a Web portal-based communications and cloud collaboration platform by using JavaScript (JS), which is embedded in HTML5 and formatted with CSS3. Other technologies used in the core code include Flash, Flex, PostgreSQL and MySQL. Our team would like to host this platform on five different Windows and Linux environments that run different types of Web servers such as IIS and Apache. Technical challenge: Each of these Windows and Linux servers have a different host name and domain name (and IP address), but we would like to keep our enterprise platform independent of host server configuration. Possible approach to solution: We think an API (interface module with a GUI) is needed to accomplish this level of modularity and flexibility while deploying at our enterprise customers. Seeking your insights: In this context, our team would appreciate your guidance on: Is there an algorithmic method to implement this Web portal-based platform in these Windows and Linux environments while separating it from server configuration, i.e., customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? For example, would it be suitable to create some JS variables / objects for host name and domain name and call them in the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of portal modules, these variables or JS objects would replace that. If so, what is the best way to make these object modules written in JS portable and re-usable across different environments and instances for enterprise customers? Here is an example of the implemented code for the said platform. The following Web site (www.CoscendCommunications.com) was built using this enterprise collaboration platform and has the base code examples of the platform. This Web site is domain-specific.
