  • No idea how to solve SICP exercise 1.11

    This is not homework. Exercise 1.11: A function f is defined by the rule that f(n) = n if n<3 and f(n) = f(n - 1) + 2f(n - 2) + 3f(n - 3) if n 3. Write a procedure that computes f by means of a recursive process. Write a procedure that computes f by means of an iterative process. Implementing it recursively is simple enough. But I couldn't figure out how to do it iteratively. I tried comparing with the Fibonacci example given, but I didn't know how to use it as an analogy. So I gave up (shame on me) and Googled for an explanation, and I found this: (define (f n) (if (< n 3) n (f-iter 2 1 0 n))) (define (f-iter a b c count) (if (< count 3) a (f-iter (+ a (* 2 b) (* 3 c)) a b (- count 1)))) After reading it, I understand the code and how it works. But what I don't understand is the process needed to get from the recursive defintion of the function to this. I don't get how the code formed in someone's head. Could you explain the thought process needed to arrive at the solution?

  • How do I check if a variable has been initialized

    First of all, I'm fairly new to Java, so sorry if this question is utterly simple. The thing is: I have a String[] s made by splitting a String in which every item is a number. I want to cast the items of s into a int[] n. s[0] contains the number of items that n will hold, effectively s.length-1. I'm trying to do this using a foreach loop: int[] n; for(String num: s){ //if(n is not initialized){ n = new int[(int) num]; continue; } n[n.length] = (int) num; } Now, I realize that I could use something like this: int[] n = new int[(int) s[0]]; for(int i=0; i < s.length; i++){ n[n.length] = (int) s[i]; } But I'm sure that I will be faced with that "if n is not initialized initialize it" problem in the future.

    I have an web application written in Java, and I have a thread-pool. The application is huge, and I cannot make major changes, for example, I cannot change log4j. I am executing a batch process in the thread pool, and I want to log everything that goes is executed to execute that process. There will always be just one thread active in the thread pool. Any ideas of how can I do that?

  • removing elements incrementally from a list

    Dear all, I've a list of float numbers and I would like to delete incrementally a set of elements in a given range of indexes, sth. like: for j in range(beginIndex, endIndex+1): print ("remove [%d] => val: %g" % (j, myList[j])) del myList[j] However, since I'm iterating over the same list, the indexes (range) are not valid any more for the new list. Does anybody has some suggestions on how to delete the elements properly? Best wishes

    I want to create a mecanism in a large .net application to handle all the exceptions in the application, and to save the error messages (in db or log file) so these errors can be fixed, and so we are aware of the problems in the application. Does anyone know a good way of creating a library to handle and process all the exceptions?. Are there any tools around that can simplify my task. What aproach would you suggest me to take....   • Why ng-hide don't work with custom directives?

    I'm reading the directives section of the developers guide on angularjs.org to refresh my knowledge and gain some insights and I was trying to run one of the examples but the directive ng-hide is not working on a custom directive.   • Why do C# and Java require everything to be in a class?

    It seemed like this question should have been asked before, but searching found nothing. I've always wondered what's the point of making us put every bit of code inside a class or interface. I seem to remember that there were some advantages to requiring a main() function like C, but nothing for classes. Languages like Python are, in a way, even more object oriented than Java since they don't have primitives, but you can put code wherever you want. Is this some sort of "misinterpretation" of OOP? After all, you can write procedural code like you would in C and put it inside a class, but it won't be object oriented.

  • Sending JSON to an ASP.NET MVC Action Method Argument

    Javier G Money Lozano, one of the good folks involved with C4MVC, recently wrote a blog post on posting JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) encoded data to an MVC controller action. In his post, he describes an interesting approach of using a custom model binder to bind sent JSON data to an argument of an action method.   • Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive: Accesing the data in the disk?

    Hi all! I have an Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive, 1TB, and lately I can't access the data on the drive. The shares (both built-in and created by me) are there, the security works, but when trying to access the data I get a "The network path was not found" message which is worrying, to say the least. I'd like to know if there is a way to get the data off the disks somehow, as some of the data in the drive (ie, pictures and videos of my 1.5 yrs old son) is hard if not impossible to find otherwise. Microsoft obviously wants to keep the netbook users rather rigidly from customizing their machines. It isn't even possible to edit the picture itself in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\ directory, due to lack of rights. From what I can tell only the user "Trusted Installer" would have enough rights to do so... Update: With your help I found two programs that are able to bypass Microsoft's limitations: Starter Wallpaper Changer (Thanks to Sopan and javier.
