  • Debugging Windows 2008 (Roaming Profile) user logon

    I would appreciate some help debugging my windows 2008 profile service. Any domain account that logs on to my 2008 machine gets a +- 20 second waiting time on "user profile service" I am using roaming profiles, they are around 8mb in size, and most folders are already redirected to a network share. event log registers no errors, there is more than 1 network card installed, but I have the correct card listed as "primary" Is there any way to increase verbosity of logging on specifically the "user profile service" ?   • Windows Service with Logon a user

    I have a service running in a box with Windows XP and a box of Server (2003). There is one service running in autmactic mode. If I set the log on with a local user, the service will stop running if the user logs off the account from the Windows? In other words, in order to keep the service running, have I to keep the user as login mode? I understand that the service can be set as local system which will not need any one to login as long as the box is powered on. However, the service I need to run has to be running as a local user with the required permissions. The problem I have right now is that the box may reboot itself. If that happens, no one is logged in yet until some one has to log in as the required user. I want to make sure if the required user has to be as a log on user first. If that's the case, any suggestion to deal with unexpected reboot issue?

  • Black Screen on Logon (windows 7 home premium)

    i have been having some trouble with a dell Xps 15 laptop that i recently purchased. it is under a month old, and a problem has occurred, upon logging on just after start up, the computer will just sit on a black log on screen (with the mouse still visible and active) for a few minutes. it is extremely annoying, especially when im in a rush. the laptop is under a month old. So far, i have tried to update the drivers, all windows update, and still, nothing. also, it doesnt seem to do it when i log into safe mode, or if it does, it will do it for less than 10 seconds, then load the desktop (in normal boot, it usually takes a few minutes). i have also run a number of the inbuilt diagnostics, but found no errors. i want to avoid having to do a system restore for as long as i can. does anyone know anything that can help? (the laptop is running a 500gb SSD, 2gb Nvidia 640m, 8gb ram, 3rd gen i7 quad core with 8 threads) thanks.

  • Configured Samba to join our domain, but logon fails from Windows machine

    I've configured a Fedora 11 installation to join our domain. It seems to join successfully (though it reports a DNS update failure) but when I try to access \\fedoraserver.test.mycompany.com I'm prompted for a password. So I enter adminuser and the password and that fails, so I try test.mycompany.com\adminuser and that too fails. What am I missing? EDIT (Update 9/1/09): I can now connect to the machine and see the shares on it (see my response to djhowell's answer) but when I try to connect, I get an error saying The network path was not found.   • SQL 2008 network logon

    Hi I have a domain controller that I have installed active directory onto and have set up an account that I want to use for my SQL server installation on another computer that is linked onto the domain. I can search for the account in active directory and I am able to select it into the add new user section in MSSMS, however, when I click add I get 'Windows NT user or group 'DOMAIN\user' not found. Check the name again. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15401) I have googled the Error code and I havent found a solution that has fixed the error. If you have any help I would be greatful Thanks :)

  • Laptop authentication/logon via accelometer tilt, flip, and twist

    Looking for another application/technology: A number of years ago, I read about a novel way to authenticate and log on to a laptop. The user simply had to hold the laptop in the air and execute a simple series of tilts and flips to the laptop. By logging accelerometer data, this creates a unique signature for the user. Even if an attacker watched and repeated the exact same motions, the attacker could not replicate the user's movements closely enough. I am looking for information about this technology again, but I can't find anything. It may have been an actual feature on a laptop, or it may have just been a research project. I think I read about it in a magazine like Wired. Does anyone have more information about authentication via unique accelerometer signatures?     Our CruiseControl.NET service on Win2003 Server (VMWare Virtual) was recently changed from a service account to a user account to allow for a new part of our build process to work. The new user has "Log on as a service" rights, verified by checking Local Security Settings - Local Policies - User Rights Assignment, and the user password is set to never expire. The problem I'm facing is every time the service is restarted, I get the 1069 error as described in this questions subject. I have to go into the properties of the service (log on tab) and re-enter the password, even though it hasn't changed, and the user already has the appropriate rights. Once I enter the password apply the changes, a prompt appears telling me that the user has been granted log on as a service rights. The service will then start will no problems. Not a show stopper, but a pain none-the-less. Why isn't the password persisting with the service?

  • Auto logon to internet provider

    We use wireless internet access. The wireless is secured and to get an IP address, you provide the right key. That is setup just fine. However, on top of that, the first time we access the internet, a browser page appears and we have to enter a password. then we have access to the internet for a period of time. How can the password step be automated? I also have a web-based printer that doesn't work (except via USB connection) because it can't get out to the web. I can't change the router settings. Is there anything I can do to get the printer working and automatic the access?

  • How to logon to a non-domain computer from one in a domain

    I've met a rather annoying problem that should be very simple, but I can't seem to figure it out. I have a work laptop that is part of a domain, so my username is foobar\bob. I also have my home computer with no domain, just the username bob. I'm trying to connect to a share on my home computer from my work computer. It's asking me for my username and password, which is bob, but when I type in bob it assumes I mean foobar\bob, which of course doesn't work. I've tried to use hostname\bob, but that doesn't seem to work either... What can I do here? Both computers are running Windows 7.

    When using a code editor like Notepad++ or Eclipse I'm experiencing a rather annoying problem: each time I type the < key the keyboard latches into some unexpected mode whereby the subsequent keypress behaves as if the alt key were being held down. The only way to return to normal mode is to hit the escape key twice immediately after I type a < character. The keyboard is a Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 and the OS is Windows 7. Does anyone have any idea what I should do to stop this behaviour? Thanks

  • Remote Debian System Preventing Logon

    I have a dozen or so single board computers on a network running Debian (squeeze) and access them via ssh (ssh server is dropbear). To give an idea of the hardware of these computers they're 1.2 GHz x86 processors, 1GB of RAM and 4GB flash drives formatted as ext2 (I avoided ext3 to prevent the added flash write stress from journaling), there is also a swap partition on the drive. Normally the setup I'm using works great and I can access all the computers. Every once in a while one will prevent access. What happens is I try to connect via ssh (putty) and it gives me the login prompt, I enter the username and password and it responds 'Access Denied' and it will also refuse any public key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. The credentials are correct as they worked previously. The computer responds to pings and putty recognizes the server public key, which implies to me the system is still running. Restarting the server fixes the problem and I can log in again. (I tried a temporary fix of putting shutdown -r now in the root crontab but this doesn't seem to reliably be run once the hang happens) Once I restart however there doesn't seem to be any information in any of the system logs to indicate what happened, the logs are simply empty for that time period, as if the system had crashed. There is some custom software running on the system which appears to stop working (which is why I wanted to ssh to begin with). I'm assuming that this program is the source of the problems but I'm unsure of how it would cause it and how to debug what is happening. The most likely explanation I can think of is that there is a memory leak in the other program that then prevents dropbear from spawning a new login shell (and crontab from executing shutdown) as there is not enough free memory. But looking at memory usage of the other (working) computers there doesn't seem to be any meaningful increase in memory to indicate a leak (unless it's a very big, fast acting and rare leak). I would think that when the OS ran out of memory it would restart the system or kill processes (the Linux kernel restarts right?). The other thing I wonder about is if the fact that they are running off a flash drive could have some effect, especially the swap partition (which I think I should remove to prevent wear of the flash), but the flash drives are young (~1 month) and I don't think that wear would be a factor yet. Does anybody have an idea of what could cause these symptoms, if it could be done by a memory leak, or something else I haven't thought of. And does anybody know of a method to try to debug the problem and find out more information about what's going wrong?

My first idea was to just create login/logout scripts that contact a server, but the problem is since these scripts would run as the current user, that they would then be able to run this script outside of these two occasions. Is there any way to go about running a login/logout script as the domain computer rather than as the user?

    I just setup an out of the box "W2K8 R2 Web" server and installed IIS 7 out of the box. Then I installed the .NET4 framework and ran "aspnet_regiis -i" command. I created a site using .NET 4.0 Integrated app pool. I created an MVC application using the default MVC project template, without modifying I compiled the project and deploy the files using (Publish) to the virtual directory. I can pull the site up, but the styles are missing from the page and for some reason it routing to the /Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=/
