  • No Significant Fragmentation? Look Closer…

If you are relying on using 'best-practice' percentage-based thresholds when you are creating an index maintenance plan for a SQL Server that checks the fragmentation in your pages, you may miss occasional 'edge' conditions on larger tables that will cause severe degradation in performance. It is worth being aware of patterns of data access in particular tables when judging the best threshold figure to use.

  • When Canonicalization is an Issue

Although extremely hard to pronounce, canonicalization is a hot topic right now. If there are a lot of URLs that lead to pretty much the same page, you're going to make the search engines work extra hard and spend a lot more time crawling all the different URLs. Often times, this means that they'll miss the important pages of your website because your crawl time is limited or too slow.

  • APC not caching many files

    - by tetranz
Hello I have a Drupal site running on a VPS at Linode with PHP 5.2.10 and APC 3.1.6. It never caches more than about 25 files and barely uses any of its available memory. Drupal has hundreds of php files. I have another server where APC seems to work well and does indeed cache hundreds of files. The only difference with that site is that it runs Ubuntu 10.04 and php 5.3.2. The config settings are the same. What could be wrong? I'll paste the config from apc.php below. This is after hitting multiple parts of Drupal. Thanks APC Version 3.1.6 PHP Version 5.2.10-2ubuntu6.5 APC Host xxx.example.com Server Software Apache/2.2.12 (Ubuntu) Shared Memory 1 Segment(s) with 32.0 MBytes (mmap memory, pthread mutex locking) Start Time 2010/12/02 11:32:17 Uptime 3 minutes File Upload Support 1 File Cache Information Cached Files 21 ( 1.4 MBytes) Hits 169 Misses 21 Request Rate (hits, misses) 1.00 cache requests/second Hit Rate 0.89 cache requests/second Miss Rate 0.11 cache requests/second Insert Rate 0.17 cache requests/second Cache full count 0 User Cache Information Cached Variables 0 ( 0.0 Bytes) Hits 0 Misses 0 Request Rate (hits, misses) 0.00 cache requests/second Hit Rate 0.00 cache requests/second Miss Rate 0.00 cache requests/second Insert Rate 0.00 cache requests/second Cache full count 0 Runtime Settings apc.cache_by_default 1 apc.canonicalize 1 apc.coredump_unmap 0 apc.enable_cli 0 apc.enabled 1 apc.file_md5 0 apc.file_update_protection 2 apc.filters apc.gc_ttl 3600 apc.include_once_override 0 apc.lazy_classes 0 apc.lazy_functions 0 apc.max_file_size 1M apc.mmap_file_mask apc.num_files_hint 1000 apc.preload_path apc.report_autofilter 0 apc.rfc1867 0 apc.rfc1867_freq 0 apc.rfc1867_name APC_UPLOAD_PROGRESS apc.rfc1867_prefix upload_ apc.rfc1867_ttl 3600 apc.shm_segments 1 apc.shm_size 32M apc.slam_defense 1 apc.stat 1 apc.stat_ctime 0 apc.ttl 0 apc.use_request_time 1 apc.user_entries_hint 4096 apc.user_ttl 0 apc.write_lock 1

  • Squid3 not caching simple request and response

    - by Nick Spacek
Hi folks, I've pared down my squid.conf to try to figure this out: http_port 80 accel defaultsite=host.to.cache cache_peer ip.to.cache parent 80 0 no-query originserver acl our_sites dstdomain host.to.cache http_access allow our_sites refresh_pattern . 1 20% 4320 Requests are being proxied correctly, so that's a start. Here's a request: GET http://host.to.cache/path?some_param=true Accept: */* Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate, sdch Accept-Language: en-US,en Connection: keep-alive Host: host.to.cache User-Agent: myuseragent And the response: Connection: keep-alive Content-Length: 585 Content-Type: application/xml Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2011 18:33:11 GMT Via: 1.0 localhost (squid/3.0.STABLE19) X-Cache: MISS from localhost X-Cache-Lookup: MISS from localhost:80 The response has no caching-related headers, but I thought that refresh_pattern would set a default behavior for responses without caching-related headers. For my test, I wanted to cache everything for one minute at minimum. Am I missing something obvious? I did take a peek at this question: Squid isn't caching ...and ran through the page here: http://www.mnot.net/cache_docs/ briefly, but didn't see anything relevant (not to say that there isn't, I could have missed something). Thanks for any help.

  • Apache APC (Windows) Can I optimize these APC settings more?

  • Increasing touch surface (#wp7dev)

    - by Laurent Bugnion
When you design for Windows Phone 7 (or for any touch device, for that matter, and most especially small screens), you need to be very careful to give enough surface to your users’ fingers. It is easy to miss a touch on such small screens, and that can be horrifyingly frustrating. This is especially true when people are on the move, and trying to hit the control while walking and holding their device in one hand, or when the device is mounted in a car and vibrating with the engine. In my experience, a touch surface should be ideally minimum 60x60 pixels to be easy to activate on the Windows Phone 7 screen (which is, as we know, 800 pixels x 480 pixels). Ideally, I try to make my touch surfaces 80x80 pixels minimum. This causes a few design challenges of course. Using transparent backgrounds However, one thing is helping us tremendously: some surfaces can be made transparent, and yet react to touch. The secret is the following: If you have a panel that has a Null background (i.e. the Background is not set at all), then the empty surface does not react to touch. If however the Background is set to the Transparent color (or any color where the Alpha channel is set to 0), then it will react to touch. Setting a transparent background is easy. For example: <Grid Background="#00000000"> </Grid> or <Grid Background="Transparent"> </Grid> In C#: var grid = new Grid { Background = new SolidColorBrush( Colors.Transparent) }; Using negative margins Having a transparent background reactive to touch is a good start, but in addition, you must make sure that the surface is big enough for my clumsy fingers. One way to achieve that is to increase the transparent, touch-reactive surface, and reposition the element using negative margins. For example, consider the following UI. I changed the transparent background of the HyperlinkButton to Red, in order to visualize the touch surface. In this figure, the Settings HyperlinkButton is 105 pixels x 31 pixels. This is wide enough, but really small in height and easy to miss. To improve this, we can use negative margins, for instance: <HyperlinkButton Content="Settings" HorizontalAlignment="Right" VerticalAlignment="Bottom" Height="60" Margin="0,0,0,-15" /> Notice the usage of negative bottom margin to bring the HyperlinkButton back at the bottom of the main Grid’s first row, where it belongs. And the result is: Notice how the touch surface is much bigger than before. This makes the HyperlinkButton easier to reach, and improves the user experience. With the background set back to normal, the UI looks exactly the same, as it should: In summary: Remember to maximize the touch surface for your controls. Plan your design in consequence by reserving enough room around each control to allow their hit surface to be expanded as shown in this article. Do not cram too many controls in one page. If REALLY needed, use an additional page (or even better: use a Pivot control with multiple pivot items) for the controls that don’t fit on the first one. This should ensure a smoother user experience and improved touch behavior. Happy coding! Laurent   Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft) Subscribe | Twitter | Facebook | Flickr | LinkedIn

  • jQuery.ajax call to Twitter succeeds but returns null for Firefox

    - by Zhami
I've got code that makes a simple get request to Twitter (search) using jQuery's ajax method. The code works fine on Safari, but fails on Firefox (3.6.3). In the Firefox case, my jQuery.ajax parameters 'success' method is invoked, but the supplied data is null. (In Safari, I receive a boatload of JSON data). My ajax call is: $.ajax({ url: 'http://search.twitter.com/search.json?q='+searchTerm, dataType: 'json', async: true, beforeSend: function(request) { window.console.log('starting AJAX request to get Twitter data'); }, success: function(data, textStatus, request) { window.console.log('AJAX request to get Twitter succeeded: status=' + textStatus); callback(data); }, error: function(request, status, error) { window.console.log('AJAX request to get user data --> Error: ' + status); errback(request, status, error); } }); Firebug shows Response headers: Date Sun, 11 Apr 2010 22:30:26 GMT Server hi Status 200 OK X-Served-From b021 X-Runtime 0.23841 Content-Type application/json; charset=utf-8 X-Served-By sjc1o024.prod.twitter.com X-Timeline-Cache-Hit Miss Cache-Control max-age=15, must-revalidate, max-age=300 Expires Sun, 11 Apr 2010 22:35:26 GMT Vary Accept-Encoding X-Varnish 1827846877 Age 0 Via 1.1 varnish X-Cache-Svr sjc1o024.prod.twitter.com X-Cache MISS Content-Encoding gzip Content-Length 2126 Connection close The HTTP status is OK (200), the Conetnt-Type is properly application/json, and the Content-Length of 2126 (gzip'd) implies data came back. Yet Firebug shows the Response to be empty, and a test of the supplied data shows it o be 'null.' I am aware of a similar post on Stack Overflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1188976/jquery-get-function-succeeds-with-200-but-returns-no-content-in-firefox and from that would assume this problem is possibly related to cross-domain security, but... I know there are many JS widgets and whatnots that ajax get data from Twitter. Is there something I need to enable to allow this?

  • Perl Regex - Condensing groups of find/replace

    - by brydgesk
    I'm using Perl to perform some file cleansing, and am running into some performance issues. One of the major parts of my code involves standardizing name fields. I have several sections that look like this: sub substitute_titles { my ($inStr) = @_; ${$inStr} =~ s/ PHD./ PHD /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ P H D / PHD /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ PROF./ PROF /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ P R O F / PROF /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ DR./ DR /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ D.R./ DR /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ HON./ HON /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ H O N / HON /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ MR./ MR /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ MRS./ MRS /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ M R S / MRS /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ MS./ MS /; ${$inStr} =~ s/ MISS./ MISS /; } I'm passing by reference to try and get at least a little speed, but I fear that running so many (literally hundreds) of specific string replaces on tens of thousands (likely hundreds of thousands eventually) of records is going to hurt the performance. Is there a better way to implement this kind of logic than what I'm doing currently? Thanks Edit: Quick note, not all the replace functions are just removing periods and spaces. There are string deletions, soundex groups, etc.

I have Models for business Apps class staff_name(models.Model): TITLE_CHOICES = ( ('Mr', 'Mr'), ('Miss', 'Miss'), ( 'Mrs', 'Mrs'), ( 'chief', 'chief'), ) titlename = models.CharField(max_length=10,choices=TITLE_CHOICES) firstname = models.CharField(max_length=150) surname = models.CharField(max_length=150) date = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) class meta: ordering = ["date"] get_latest_by = "date" class inventory_transaction(models.Model): stock_in = models.DecimalField(blank=True, null=True,max_digits=8, decimal_places=2) stock_out = models.DecimalField(blank=True,null=True,max_digits=8, decimal_places=2) Number_container = models.ForeignKey(container_identity) staffs = models.ForeignKey(staff_name) goods_details = models.ForeignKey(departments) balance = models.DecimalField(max_digits=8, decimal_places=2) date = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) What i want to accomplish is check if the staff have made entry to the table before if yes add the value for the stock in plus (last) balance field and assign to balance if no just assign stock in value to balance field and save these are my codes These are my codes: try: s = staffname.staffs_set.all().order_by("-date").latest() # staffname is the instant of the class model staff_name e = s.staffs_set.create(stockin=vdataz,balance=s.balance + vdataz ) # e is the instant of the class model inventory_transaction e.save e.staffs.add(s) e.from_container.add(containersno) e.goods_details.add(department) except ObjectDoesNotExist: e = staff_name.objects.create(stockin=vdataz,balance=vdataz ) e.save e.staffs.add(staffname) e.from_container.add(containersno) e.goods_details.add(department) I will really appreciate a solution Thanks I hope it make more sense now. iam on online if you need more explanation just ask in the comment.Thank you for your help

  • seriouosly elusive for loop (racking my brains!)

    - by user1693359
I've got a loop issue in Python 2.72 that's really frustrating me. Basically the loop is not iterating fast the first index (j), and I've tried all sorts of ways to fix it with no luck. def learn(dataSet): for i in dataSet.getNext(): recall = raw_input("Enter all members of %s you are able to recall >>> (separated by commas) " % (i.getName())) missed = i.getMembers() missedString = [] for a in missed: missedString.append(a.getName()) Here is the loop I can't get to iterate. The first for loop only goes through the first iteration of 'j' in the split string list, then removes it from 'missedString'. I would like for all members of the split-string 'recall' to be removed from 'missedString'. for j in string.split(recall, ','): if j in missedString: missedString.remove(j) continue for b in missed: if b.getName() not in missedString: missed.remove(b) print 'You missed %d. ' % (len(missed)) if (len(missed)) > 0: print 'Maybe a hint or two will help...' for miss in missed: remind(miss.getSecs(), i.getName(), missed) I really have no clue, help would be appreciated!
