  • Writing a simple batch file to setup a variable?

    - by Sam
I want to write a simple batch file where i want to setup a environment variable based on the machine architecture. It is as below: set ARCH=%PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE% echo %ARCH% if %ARCH%==x86 ( set JAVA_ROOT=C:\Progra~1\Java\j2re1.4.2_13 ) else ( set JAVA_ROOT=C:\Progra~2\Java\j2re1.4.2_13 ) echo JAVA_ROOT is %JAVA_ROOT% On 64-bit machine where the architecture is 'AMD64' the JAVA_ROOT will be displayed as 'C:\Progra~2\Java\j2re1.4.2_13' at the echo statement. But when i run an application that uses this file, the first value of JAVA_ROOT would be picked up 'C:\Progra~1\Java\j2re1.4.2_13'. I don't have any idea why it goes in the 'if' part even though i am running this on 64-bit Windows7. When i echoed the

  • feeding input to a java process from a batch file

    - by YGL
If I have a simple java program that processes lines of text from standard input, then I can run it with the following script: @Echo off java Test < file.txt pause exit The script redirects lines of input from a separate file. Is there a way that I can avoid having to use an extra file? Or is this the easiest way? Thanks.

  • how to remove trailing and leading whitespace for user-provided input in dos?

    - by OopOop
I know how to do this when the variable is pre-defined. However, when asking for the user to enter in some kind of input, how do I trim leading and trailing whitespace? This is what I have so far: @echo off set /p input=: echo. The input is %input% before ::trim left whitespace for /f "tokens=* delims= " %%a in ("%input%") do set input=%%a ::trim right whitespace (up to 100 spaces at the end) for /l %%a in (1,1,100) do if "!input:~-1!"==" " set input=!input:~0,-1! echo. The input is %input% after pause Thank you! :)

  • How to ignore %% from being evaluated?

    - by murxx
Hi, one of my variables has the value %val% - this is exactly the name! So: set variable=%val% What happens now is that when running the script the variable will be set to nothing as the %val% is being evaluated! But this is not what I want... How can I tell DOS to ignore the %-sign here? Can anybody out there help me with my question? Thanks a lot...

  • 2D Gaming - How to reflect a ball off the bat?

    - by sid
Hi there I am pretty new to XNA & game dev and am stuck at ball reflection. My ball is reflecting once it hits the bat, but only in one angle, no matter which angle the bat is at. Here's the code: if (BallRect.Intersects(BatRect)) { Vector2 NormBallVelocity = Ball.velocity; NormBallVelocity.Normalize(); NormBallVelocity = Vector2.Reflect(Ball.velocity, NormBallVelocity); Ball.velocity = NormBallVelocity; } The ball is retracting its way back. How do I make it look like the ball is reflecting off the bat? I have seen other posts but they are on 3D front I am too new to translate it to 2D terms... Thanks Sid

dim shell,x,y x="D:\d" y="c.bat " & x set shell=createobject("wscript.shell") shell.run y shell.run "a.bat" set shell=nothing when i run this script, it runs both batch files simultaneously. what i need is that it should run the first batch file(c.bat) and after it is completely executed, it should execute other(a.bat) what i need works if i make another batch file and use: call c.bat call a.bat

  • Can a candidate be judged by asking to write a complex program on "paper"?

    - by iammilind
Sometime back in an interview, I was asked to write following program: In a keypad of a mobile phone, there is a mapping between number and characters. e.g. 0 & 1 corresponds to nothing; 2 corresponds to 'a','b','c'; 3 corresponds to 'd','e','f'; ...; 9 corresponds to 'w','x','y','z'. User should input any number (e.g. 23, 389423, 927348923747293) and I should store all the combinations of these character mapping into some data structure. For example, if user enters "23" then possible character combinations are: ad, ae, af, bd, be, bf, cd, ce, cf or if user enters, "4676972" then it can be, gmpmwpa, gmpmwpb, ..., hnroxrc, ..., iosozrc Interviewer told that people have written code for this within 20-30 mins!! Also he insisted I have to write on paper. If I am writing a code then my tendency is as of I am writing production code, even though it may not be expected from me. So, I always try to think all the aspects like, optimization, readability, maintainability, extensible and so on. Considering all these, I felt that I should be writing on PC and it needs decent 2 hours. Finally after 25 mins, I was able to come up with just the concept and some shattered pieces of code (not to mention of my rejection). My question is not the answer for the above program. I want to know that is this a right way to judge the caliber of a person ? Am I wrong / too slow in the estimates ? Am I too idealistic ?

  • Do you sign contracts digitally or still on paper? And what do clients think?

    - by user1162541
We are all getting used to checking a box and putting our name in a text field to create a contract with an airline, a hosting company, or a software download. However, for some reason I am still asking clients to sign our contracts for website development on paper, and send me a scan. Few complain about this procedure, but I am personally thinking: what am I doing, doing this the old fashion way?! Signing contracts digitally would be faster, more convenient for clients and for me, and easier to store. So to me it appears to be time to start creating some contract agreement online that clients can read, then print their name, and mark a box "I AGREE WITH THIS CONTRACT AND BY PRINTING MY NAME I AGREE TO SIGNING THIS", or something like that. I would record their IP, browser data, and time of signing. If I really want to ensure their identity, I could link this to OpenID and require them to log in with their e-mail so that I can ensure that they are logged in on an existing e-mail account. Sounds OK to me. My question is: is this practice becoming a standard practice in professional IT services? Are you (as a professional) doing this? If you are, how do clients react? Any drawbacks doing this? EDIT: This question is not about the legal aspects. It is about common practices among programmers and web-development companies, and what clients think of this.

  • GPL'ing code of a third party?

    - by Mark
I am facing the following dilemma at the moment. I am using code from a scientific paper in a commercial project. So basically I copied and pasted the code from the paper's pdf into my code editor and use it in my own code. The code in the paper does not have any copy restrictions or license(like the GPL) so I thought I would be ok using it in a commercial project. However, I have seen several gpl licensed open source projects that use the exact same code from the paper to the point of having the same variable names like in the paper. So what happened here is that a gpl license was put on a third parties non gpl'ed code. Are these open source projects in violation of the gpl or would I be in violation of the gpl because I use code which has been gpl'ed? My common sense tells me it is not allowed to gpl somebody elses non-gpl'ed (like in this case from the paper) code but I though I would ask anyway.

  • Understanding #DAX Query Plans for #powerpivot and #tabular

    - by Marco Russo (SQLBI)
Alberto Ferrari wrote a very interesting white paper about DAX query plans. We published it on a page where we'll gather articles and tools about DAX query plans: http://www.sqlbi.com/topics/query-plans/I reviewed the paper and this is the result of many months of study - we know that we just scratched the surface of this topic, also because we still don't have enough information about internal behavior of many of the operators contained in a query plan. However, by reading the paper you will start reading a query plan and you will understand how it works the optimization found by Chris Webb one month ago to the events-in-progress scenario. The white paper also contains a more optimized query (10 time faster), even if the performance depends on data distribution and the best choice really depends on the data you have. Now you should be curious enough to read the paper until the end, because the more optimized query is the last example in the paper!

  • How to reinstall OEM Windows 98 SE?

    - by Sammy
I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE on an old PC and it's not going well. I run into this problem. Searching for Boot Record from Floppy..OK Starting Windows 98... TOSHIBA Enhanced-IDE CD/DVD-ROM Device Driver (ATAPI) Version 2.24 (C)Copyright Toshiba Corp. 1995-1999. All rights reserved. Device Name : TOSCD001 Number of units : 1 MSCDEX Version 2.25 Copyright (C) MIcrosoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. Drive Z: = Driver TOSCD001 unit 0 TOSHIBA MACHINE Invalid drive specification Path not found - C:\TOOLS\CDROMDRV.SYS Invalid drive specification Invalid drive specification After that last line, it leaves me at a bitmap image displaying instructions to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. It doesn't say why I have to reboot, and it doesn't state any error type, it just want's me to reboot for no apparent reason. After reboot, it just boots up from Floppy again and it cycles through the same thing all over again. The computer has been restored to original specification. Original system recovery "CD-ROM" discs are available and they are not scratched or anything, they are in very good condition. It's a set of 3 CDs, and the first disc labeled "1/3" should be the one holding the OEM version of Windows 98 SE. There is also a boot disk for Windows 98. I'm not sure what the other two discs are for. This computer came with three language support, so those could be holding different language versions or additional OEM discs. But I'm quite sure that the first disc holds the main operating system. BIOS has been set to optimized defaults. Boot priority is as follows; Floppy, IDE-0, CD-ROM. Under Standard CMOS settings, BIOS scans and autoconfigures both the hard drive and the CD/DVD drive. On POST it finds them both, and it finds the DOS bootdisk and starts preparing for installation, as you can see above. So what's this "invalid drive specification" about? Why isn't the installation starting? Updates Update 1 Booting from CD disc 2 In desperation I tried booting from the second CD. Boot order was; Floppy, CD-ROM, IDE-0. It boots normally from floppy disk, just like above, but then returns following. File not found - Z:\3LNGINST\TOOLS\PARTINFO.TXT I accidentally pressed some key on the keyboard, and before I knew it, the following screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Verifying drive integrity, 16% complete. After completion another screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?....................? [Y] Verifying drive integrity, 7% complete. I didn't choose Yes, it was set automatically. After completion the computer was automatically rebooted. Then I got a new screen. This is in Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish. Here's the message in Swedish. Let me translate that. Hard drive is not ready for restoring the software. Setup program has to create new partitions (C:, D:, ...). WARNING! ALL CONTENTS ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE ERASED! Press any key to continue (or CTRL-C to cancel). I pressed Enter and it started formatting the hard drive. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE c: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?y Formatting 14,67.53M 1 percent completed. It automatically sets the "y" option and starts formatting. Rebooting with CD disc 1 After completing this operation it rebooted automatically. I inserted CD disc 1 and there was no issue with "invalid drive specification" anymore. Instead, a bitmap menu was displayed where it asked me to choose a language. And I thought I had it there for a while but it didn't work out. After choosing the language, another menu was displayed asking me to choose a type of recovery (restore pre-installed software OR restore hard drive partitions and pre-installed software). I opted for the second option. Then a data destruction warning showed up where I just pressed 1 to Continue. It did something and then just rebooted and the same formatting screen shows up as before. So something is not right. Am I doing it wrong? I seem to have come past the CD-ROM driver issue at least. But now I'm stuck with this problem... it seems to have something to do with the hard drive. Like... why is is it always trying to format it? Isn't it enough to format it once? By the way, it needs to be formatted as FAT32, right? Windows 98 doesn't support NTFS? I think FDISK should have taken care of this already. I know this is an old hard drive, but I connected to my main computer and it was able to read and write to it without a problem. It does have bad sectors though, but it's expected on an old hard drive like this. Any ideas?.. Update 2 I seem to be repeatedly getting stuck at the format screen where it asks to press any key to continue. So tried to cancel it this time with Ctrl+C. This leaves me at: A:\TOOLS> I can do DIR and CD and I tried to change to Z: drive. I tried running "setup" but there is no such thing. Z:\>setup Bad command or file name Update 3 Floppy structure Here's the file/folder structure of the floppy disk. A:\>dir /s Volume in drive A has no label. Do I really have to change drive letter Z: to C:? Proposed solutions Solution #1 Ramhound proposed to change the boot order to following; CD-ROM, IDE-0, Floppy This didn't help. In fact, here is the result of it. Searching for Boot Record from CDROM..Not Found Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0.. OK Missing operating system Any other ideas?... Solution #2 Rik proposed to run Z:\setup. Now that I have found a way to drop to DOS prompt with Ctrl+C as described above (Update 2), I did try running setup but there is no such command or file in there. So that didn't work.

  • conemu start a given console with hotkey

    - by Car981
How could I assign a hotkey of my choice to start c:\cygwin\cygwin.bat ? Similarly, but a bit more difficult, how could I start c:\dir1#VAR#\dir2\test.bat, where #VAR# is the name of a directory that varies, and the last (in alphabetical order) of all #VAR# should be chosen ? So just to be clear, if c:\dir1\A\dir2\test.bat and c:\dir1\B\dir2\test.bat exist, the console that should be opened when the hotkey is pressed is: c:\dir1\B\dir2\test.bat. Thanks

  • How to time batch file execution using timethis.exe?

    - by unknown
While timethis.exe works fine for almost every application, it seems to fail for .bat files: C:\test>timethis test.bat TimeThis : Command Line : test.bat TimeThis : Start Time : Fri Feb 26 19:46:30 2010 'test.bat' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. TimeThis : Command Line : test.bat TimeThis : Start Time : Fri Feb 26 19:46:30 2010 TimeThis : End Time : Fri Feb 26 19:46:30 2010 TimeThis : Elapsed Time : 00:00:00.070 While executing it on a regular command line is fine, timethis.exe fails for it. How do I fix this problem?

  • What is a good topic for a research paper on modern computer architecture?

    - by Max Schmeling
This may not be the right place for this, but I wanted to get this question in front of some of the brightest people on the internet, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I have to write a research paper on some modern aspect of computer architecture. The subject is really not very restrictive; pretty much any recent development in computer hardware will work. I want to write it over something really interesting, but I don't have a lot of good ideas. What would make a really interesting paper?

  • How can one describe a rock-paper-scissors relationship between 3 items?

    - by Madara Uchiha
Let's say I have the following structure: abstract class Hand {} class Rock extends Hand {} class Paper extends Hand {} class Scissors extends Hand {} The goal is to make a function (or a method) Hand::compareHands(Hand $hand1, Hand $hand2), which would return the winning hand in a rock-paper-scissors match. That would be very easy with a bunch of ifs, but the point is to have a more robust structure, that's relying on polymorphism rather than on procedural code. P.S. this is done in actual production code, if someone is asking. This isn't some sort of challenge or homework. (It's not really rock-paper-scissors, but you get the point).

  • Is this the best way to get the size of a Paper via CUPS?

    - by Lawrence Johnston
I've got a CUPS job control file. I need to get the actual dimensions of the print that was made. This is the way I've figure out to do it: Get the paper name using the media attribute. (e.g. Letter) Get the printer uri from the printer-uri attribute. (e.g. ipp://localhost/printers/MyPrinter) Get the printer name by passing the printer uri to the IPP_GET_PRINTER_ATTRIBUTES operation and getting the printer-name attribute. (e.g. MyPrinter) Get the path to the PPD passing the printer name to the the cupsGetPPD method. Open the PPD passing the path to the PPD to the ppdOpenFile method. Get the paper size by passing the PPD and paper name to the ppdPageSize method. This will work, but it seems a bit roundabout. Is there a more efficient way of getting what I need?

  • How to create a service running a .bat file on Windows 2008 Server?

    - by abyx
I've created the service using sc create myService binpath=myservice.bat But when I start it, it fails with the following error message: [SC] StartService FAILED 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. On Win2k3 I used the srvany.exe from the Resource kit, but there's no resource kit for win2k8. For the time being I've installed the srvany.exe on my machine, but I don't think that's the best way to do it. Thanks!
