  • Alternatives to using web.config to store settings (for complex solutions)

    - by Brian MacKay
In our web applications, we seperate our Data Access Layers out into their own projects. This creates some problems related to settings. Because the DAL will eventually need to be consumed from perhaps more than one application, web.config does not seem like a good place to keep the connection strings and some of the other DAL-related settings. To solve this, on some of our recent projects we introduced a third project just for settings. We put the setting in a system of .Setting files... With a simple wrapper, the ability to have different settings for various enviroments (Dev, QA, Staging, Production, etc) was easy to achieve. The only problem there is that the settings project (including the .Settings class) compiles into an assembly, so you can't change it without doing a build/deployment, and some of our customers want to be able to configure their projects without Visual Studio. So, is there a best practice for this? I have that sense that I'm reinventing the wheel. Some solutions such as storing settings in a fixed directory on the server in, say, our own XML format occurred to us. But again, I would rather avoid having to re-create encryption for sensitive values and so on. And I would rather keep the solution self-contained if possible. EDIT: The original question did not contain the really penetrating reason that we can't (I think) use web.config ... That puts a few (very good) answers out of context, my bad.

  • One config file for multiple environments

    - by ho
I'm currently working with systems that has quite a lot of configuration settings that are environment specific (Dev, UAT, Production). Does anyone have any suggestions for minimizing the changes needed to the config file when moving between environments as well as minimizing the duplication of data in the config file? It's mostly Application settings rather than User settings. The way I'm doing it at the moment is something similar to this: <DevConnectionString>xyz</DevConnectionString> <DevInboundPath>xyz</DevInboundPath> <DevProcessedPath>xyz</DevProcessedPath> <UatConnectionString>xyz</UatConnectionString> <UatInboundPath>xyz</UatInboundPath> <UatProcessedPath>xyz</UatProcessedPath> ... <Environment>Dev</Environment> And then I have a class that reads in the Environment setting via the My.Settings class (it's VB project) and then uses that to decide what other settings to retrieve. This leads to too much duplication though so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

  • Problem adding a behaviors element to my WCF client config

    - by SteveChadbourne
    I'm trying to add a behaviors element to my client config file so I can specify maxItemsInObjectGraph. The error I get is: The element 'system.serviceModel' has invalid child element 'behaviors'. List of possible elements expected: 'bindings, client, extensions'. Here is my config: <configuration> <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="BasicHttpBinding_KernService" maxBufferSize="2147483647" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647"> <security mode="None" /> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings> <behaviors> <endpointBehaviors> <behavior name="ServiceViewEventBehavior"> <dataContractSerializer maxItemsInObjectGraph="2147483647"/> </behavior> </endpointBehaviors> </behaviors> <client> <endpoint address="http://localhost/KernMobile.WCF/KernService.svc" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="BasicHttpBinding_KernService" contract="KernWcfService.KernService" name="BasicHttpBinding_KernService" behaviorConfiguration="ServiceViewEventBehavior" /> </client> </system.serviceModel> </configuration> It's also complaining about the behaviorConfiguration attribute in the endpoint element. Any ideas? .Net 4.0 BTW.

    - by Clog
This question comes up often, but I can only find solutions for PHP, Apache, htaccess etc but not for web.config I would like my pages to return in HTTP not HTTPS, except for forms within certain subdirectories. I have created the following web.config file, but how do I exclude a subdirectory called forms. <configuration> <system.webServer> <rewrite> <rules> <rule name="Force all to HTTP" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="(.*)" /> <conditions> <add input="{HTTPS}" pattern="on" ignoreCase="true" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" redirectType="Found" url="http://www.mysite.com/{R:1}" /> </rule> </rules> </rewrite> </system.webServer> </configuration> Many thanks all you clever clogs.

  • Remove php extension from URL on Windows hosting account using web.config

    - by asprin
I've searched before asking this question. The answered ones were related to Linux hosting account and the ones with Windows hosting account didn't match what I was looking for. As you might have guessed, I've a Windows shared hosting account with godaddy. My aim was to remove the '.php' extension from the url. After researching I found that .htaccess would do exactly what I want. But I also found that .htaccess doesn't work in Windows environment and that I'll need a web.config file to do the same task. Now I know there are modules through which the code can be generated, but the problem is I don't know how to get them installed on my hosting account. I don't want to go through the process of contacting the people over at godaddy and hence I'm looking to solve this on my own. What I'm looking for is a web.config equivalent of .htaccess This is what I'm trying to achieve: Current URL : www.abcdef.com/contact.php Desired URL : www.abcdef.com/contact Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Nisar.

  • Converted PowerBuilder to ASP.Net browsing Errors

    - by user493325
I had a powerbuilder application which i converted to web application in the format of ASP.Net (aspx) files. after deploying and publishing the converted web application (copy it and add ASP.Net and network Service AND IUser permissions to enable users to access it) in IIS V6.0 over Windows server 2003 and The ASP.Net version is 2.0 The error messages I get when I browse default.aspx web page are as the following:- Server Error in '/' Application. Runtime Error Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine. Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off". <!-- Web.Config Configuration File --> <configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="Off"/> </system.web> </configuration> Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL. <!-- Web.Config Configuration File --> <configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/> </system.web> </configuration> Another error message appears on the server is:- Server Error in '/' Application. • How to upload web.config file using WebDAV on IIS7?

    - by Martin Liversage
I want to copy an ASP.NET MVC website to a remote IIS 7 server using WebDAV. I have created a site in IIS, enabled WebDAV and assigned a special application pool I have named "WebDAV Application Pool". Using a Windows 7 or Vista client I'm able to mount the remote site as a network drive. So far, so good. However, I have problems uploading web.config files to the remote site. One problem is that as soon as a web.config has been uploaded it is used to configure the WebDAV site. The web.config file in a Views folder of a MVC project effectively blocks access to that folder. To work around this problem I have configured the application pool in the applicationHost.config file: <configuration> <applicationPools> <add name="WebDAV Application Pool" autoStart="true" enableConfigurationOverride="false" /> </applicationPools> </configuration> The interesting part is the 'enableConfigurationOverride` attribute: When true, indicates that delegated settings in Web.config files will processed for applications within this application pool. When false, all settings in Web.config files will be ignored for this application pool. Doing this makes it possible to upload a web.config file to the Views folder without breaking access to the folder. However, I'm still unable to upload a web.config file to the root folder. I have the following settings in the applicationHost.config file to ensure that request filtering doesn't interfere with WebDAV: <configuration> <location path="webdav.mysite.tld"> <system.webServer> <security> <requestFiltering> <fileExtensions applyToWebDAV="false" /> <verbs applyToWebDAV="false" /> <hiddenSegments applyToWebDAV="false" /> </requestFiltering> </security> </system.webServer> </location> </configuration> In particular hiddenSegments will normally block access to web.config but setting the applyToWebDAV attribute to false should ensure that this file isn't blocked when using WebDAV. Unfortunately, I'm still unable to copy my web.config file to the root folder of the site. Doing drag and drop in Windows Explorer to the mapped WebDAV network drive will result in the following error message: Error 0x80070057: The parameter is incorrect. On the wire it seems that the HTTP status 400 Bad Request is returned. Is there anything I can do to configure WebDAV on IIS 7 to avoid this problem?

  • ILMerge: How to configure the corresponding app.config

    - by rdoubleui
I'm just trying ILMerge to merge my application and the needed libraries into one executable. I'm using the command line just to do some testing. I took a sample project: ilmerge /out:ProgramMerged.exe Program.exe Lib1.dll Lib2.dll This seems to work as intended. But what if I had a Program.exe.config? Is it still applicable? Does anybody how to achieve this?

  • Sharepoint 2007 - cant find my modifications to web.config in SpWebApplication.WebConfigModification

    - by user303672
Hi, I cant seem to find the modifications I made to web.config in my FeatureRecievers Activated event. I try to get the modifications from the SpWebApplication.WebConfigModifications collection in the deactivate event, but this is always empty.... And the strangest thing is that my changes are still reverted after deactivating the feature... My question is, should I not be able to view all changes made to the web.config files when accessing the SpWebApplication.WebConfigModifications collection in the Deactivating event? How should I go about to remove my changes explicitly? public class FeatureReciever : SPFeatureReceiver { private const string FEATURE_NAME = "HelloWorld"; private class Modification { public string Name; public string XPath; public string Value; public SPWebConfigModification.SPWebConfigModificationType ModificationType; public bool createOnly; public Modification(string name, string xPath, string value, SPWebConfigModification.SPWebConfigModificationType modificationType, bool createOnly) { Name = name; XPath = xPath; Value = value; ModificationType = modificationType; this.createOnly = createOnly; } } private Modification[] modifications = { new Modification("connectionStrings", "configuration", "<connectionStrings/>", SPWebConfigModification.SPWebConfigModificationType.EnsureChildNode, true), new Modification("add[@name='ConnectionString'][@connectionString='Data Source=serverName;Initial Catalog=DBName;User Id=UserId;Password=Pass']", "configuration/connectionStrings", "<add name='ConnectionString' connectionString='Data Source=serverName;Initial Catalog=DBName;User Id=UserId;Password=Pass'/>", SPWebConfigModification.SPWebConfigModificationType.EnsureChildNode, false) }; public override void FeatureActivated(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties) { SPSite siteCollection = (properties.Feature.Parent as SPWeb).Site as SPSite; SPWebApplication webApplication = siteCollection.WebApplication; siteCollection.RootWeb.Title = "Set from activating code at " + DateTime.Now.ToString(); foreach (Modification entry in modifications) { SPWebConfigModification webConfigModification = CreateModification(entry); webApplication.WebConfigModifications.Add(webConfigModification); } webApplication.Farm.Services.GetValue<SPWebService>().ApplyWebConfigModifications(); webApplication.WebService.Update(); } public override void FeatureDeactivating(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties) { SPSite siteCollection = (properties.Feature.Parent as SPWeb).Site as SPSite; SPWebApplication webApplication = siteCollection.WebApplication; siteCollection.RootWeb.Title = "Set from deactivating code at " + DateTime.Now.ToString(); IList<SPWebConfigModification> modifications = webApplication.WebConfigModifications; foreach (SPWebConfigModification modification in modifications) { if (modification.Owner == FEATURE_NAME) { webApplication.WebConfigModifications.Remove(modification); } } webApplication.Farm.Services.GetValue<SPWebService>().ApplyWebConfigModifications(); webApplication.WebService.Update(); } public override void FeatureInstalled(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties) { } public override void FeatureUninstalling(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties) { } private SPWebConfigModification CreateModification(Modification entry) { SPWebConfigModification spWebConfigModification = new SPWebConfigModification() { Name = entry.Name, Path = entry.XPath, Owner = FEATURE_NAME, Sequence = 0, Type = entry.ModificationType, Value = entry.Value }; return spWebConfigModification; } } Thanks for your time. /Hans

  • Alternatives to web.config files in ASP.NET

    - by Ben Aston
In my experience, web.config files are widely reviled. In particular, I have found them difficult to manage when you have multiple environments to support, and fiddly to update due to the lack of validation at update-time and the verbosity of XML. What are the alternatives?

  • Web.config: put an comment inside xml attributes

    - by stacker
I want to put an comment in web.config file, something like this: <httpRuntime requestValidationMode="2.0" // require for [ValidateInput(false)] in .net-4.0 requestPathInvalidCharacters="" // include & character in the url enableVersionHeader="false" // disable X-AspNet-Version header /> Is there any way to put comments in this way, using server-side comments like <% %> or something?

  • Limit URL Parameter Length in Web.Config

    - by Alex
Is it possible to add some kind of restriction to the web.config to limit URL parameter length? I want to prevent people at the earliest possible point from submitting too large URL parameters so the server doesn't get taxed more than necessary in the event that somebody tries to "attack" it with large invalid URL parameters.

  • Storring data in web.config(custom section/appSettings element) vs storing it in a class

    - by rubysons
Hi. Why is it better to store data inside an appSettings element (or inside a custom section) of a web.config file than to store it in a class? One argument would be that by using custom sections we don’t have to recompile code when we change data, but that’s a weak argument, especially if we’re using Web Sites, which get recompiled automatically whenever code changes! Thank you

  • app.config files of referenced dlls

    - by ban-dana
I have a Web Project (VS 2008) that references a bunch of DLLs. The DLLs are built separately, so the project references binaries and not DLL projects. Some of the DLLs have their own app.config, which I want to be copied autmatically to the web project's output directory. Is there any suitable generic way to achieve this?

First I create a setup from a project, and I install it. When the program reads and writes from app.config, I get an UnauthorizedAccessException. • VS 2010 Web.config transformations for debugging

    - by Dirk
I’m a fan of the new VS 2010 Web.config transformations. I use this feature for deployment purposes and wondered if it is possible to use them for debugging too. I think of using them in the IDE: I want to create different built configuration (with linked transformation configurations); choose one of them; start the web site in the IDE and debug the different configuration this way.

  • Removing web.config from subversion (ASP.NET Project)

    - by adinas
I have a project which is source controlled using Subversion and VisualSVN. Since the version of web.config is different on the server and the developers' computers I want the file to remain on the computers but to be ignored by Subversion. I added it to the svn:ignore but it still remains (and still has a red exclamation mark too since we are not committing it). How can I remove it from Subversion safely without it being deleted from the files system Thanks, Adin
