  How can you append to the end of a line by SED controlled by makefile? I run paste -d" " t.tex tE.tex | sed 's@$@XXX@' > tM.tex where the problem is in the use of the mark $ for the end of the line. I get #paste -d" " t.tex tE.tex | sed -e s/" "/\\\&/g | sed -r "s/XXX/" > tM.tex sed: -e expression #1, char 10: unterminated `s' command make: *** [all] Error 1 I have the command just after the "all:" tag in my makefile which contains only the two lines. The parameters -n and -e do not help here. The command works as expected run when it is run directly in terminal.

• Replacing one image with another image through ajax makes it dissappear for a split second

  I have the following code (asp.net-mvc, jquery) (i have simplified the example to show the issue) where i want to click on an image and have it replaced with another image. This works fine but the first time i click it, the original image disappears (for a split second) before the other image shows up. After that it works seamlessly. Is there any way to eliminate this quirk so there is not split second where no image is shown?   I have a large directory tree of files, and am using the following script to list and replace a searched-for name with a specific file. Problem is, I don't know how to write the createList() for-loop correctly to account for whitespace in a directory name. If all directories don't have spaces, it works fine. • Replacing mysql user authentication with openid

  So, I'm working with a really old system which uses a person's mysql database credentials to authenticate to a web site (the database was originally only accessed from the command line, but is now accessed from a php frontend). Because of some internal reasons (and to preserve the user's history), I have to leave the old authentication intact. I've been charged with adding openid authentication to this system. Somehow I need to be able to retrieve a users mysql username and password upon logging into the site through openid (using the Zend framework, by the way). I've thought of simply requiring registration at the first login, where the user must provide their mysql credentials, but I'd rather not store the password plain text. I've also considered blanking everyone's mysql passwords, and just setting the user's mysql username manually (rather than having the user provide this, since they could provide any username). This is turning into a security nightmare. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives? This is running on a Linux server, by the way. Also, I can't use mysql pluggable authentication because the mysql version is 5.0 (pluggable authentication requires mysql 5.5), and no, I can't update it.

  In Ruby, I have a string of identical characters -- let's say they're all exclamation points, as in !!!!. I would like to replace the characters at certain indices with '*' if the integer corresponding to that index meets some criteria. For example, let's say I want to replace all the characters whose indices are even numbers and are greater than 3. In the string !!!!!!!! (8 characters long), that results in !!!!*!*! (indices 4 and 6 have been replaced). What's the most compact way to do this?

  What I want to do is replace the "[replace]" in input string with the corresponding vaule in the replace array. The total number of values will change but there will always be the same number in the replace array as in input string. I have tried doing this with preg_replace and preg_replace_callback but I can't get the pattern right for [replace], I also tried using vsprintf but the % in <table width="100%"> was messing it up.   I recently got more interested in improving my tools, workspace and worflow. The first sting came with a sore finger due to a crappy keyboard, and then after some research I fell in love with the "mechanical keyboard is what you need" doctrine, bought one (cherry MX Brown if you're curious), and am very happy with the results. Currently I am replacing my previous text editor (Geany) with Sublime Text 3, and am also very happy and feeling much more powerful and professional :) Well, but while I re-read all the ancient debates about VIM vs whatever-else, the following excerpt from a blog post got me thinking again about the mouse vs keyboard, and the "moving around from the very home row" (in VIM) versus gesturing away with the tiny and unstable mouse cursor: Reaching for a mouse may indeed slow you down, but developers are commonly on machines where the trackpad is a micro-hand movement away. Most novice programmers can click on a character on screen faster than an expert Vimmer can type 20jFp; or LkEEE or /word or any other nasty way Vimmers have to use. The point of a mouse is to make arbitrary on screen jumps efficient, and it’s very good at doing that. Don’t you ever think you can beat a mouse. Well, although there is some bitterness in this statement, it makes a lot of sense, and EVEN MORE if you consider your direct input to be a TRACKPAD conveniently placed in front of your spacebar (which oddly is where I like to put my mouse, rotated 90° ccw, due to a serious tendonitis in my right shoulder, already healed, but you knod...). So, the question is: Has anyone replaced mouse by a standalone trackpad, to work in code editing in a desktop machine (that is, with a sandalone keyboard)? Was it worth the change?
