• Mysql install and remove issues

• Why does cd print when run in command substitution?

  If I use the 'cd' BASH built-in in a command substitution, it prints extra stuff to stdout, but only when piped to, eg., less. $ echo `cd .` # The output is a single newline, appended by echo. $ echo `cd .` | less # less displays: ESC]2;my.hostname.com - tmp/testenv^G (END) What's going on there? This behavior isn't documented in the bash man page for cd. Obviously, running just 'cd' in a command substitution is silly, but something like NEWDIR=`cd mypath; pwd` could be useful. I solved this by instead using NEWVAR=`cd mypath > /dev/null 2>&1; pwd` but I still want to know what's going on. • How can I tell whether an interrupted rm -r removed any files?

  I installed sshfs a Linux box and then mounted my Mac home directory. In the middle of troubleshooting a configuration issue, I did an ls -l on the mount directory (as normal user), receiving: total 0 d????????? ? ? ? ? ? sl I then ran sudo rm -r on that directory but pressed Ctrl+C to terminate it immediately before it (looks) like the command did anything. I notice no files missing but I want to be sure - is there a way I can somehow inspect the filesystem log on my Mac to see if any files were actually removed?

• How disable Apple iCal from popping up with every email invite/update?

  My iCal has new behavior (since upgrading to SL). Every time I get an ical attachment in Mail, the iCal app flies up in my face. I don't see any way to turn off this behavior and it's amazingly disruptive when I'm busy with other activities. Help? EDIT: I want iCal to add the invitations, so when I cmd-tab to the app those items are in the queue awaiting approval. What I am hoping to learn is how to stop the popup action forcing the application to become the top-level window.

• Snow Leopard, PHP, and MySQL

  I have just installed Snow Leopard and now my PHP/MySQL program ends in a "Segmentation fault". I have been searching the web for a solution, I realize that there are some issues with SL/PHP/MySQL, but I have not found anything that works yet. I downloaded the binary MySQL package mysql-5.1.42-osx10.6-x86_64. I have updated the php.ini file as suggested at various posts. When I run PHP and connect to the MySQL server the behavior is a bit random. In many cases it works fine to connect and read data. In my specific case the PHP program constructs a LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE ... statement to load data from a text file. It should do several such queries after each other in a loop. It works one time but the halts in a "Segmentation fault". The program worked fine in Leopard, but not now. My versions are: OS 10.6.2, PHP 5.3.0, MySQL 5.1.42

• The computer after motherboard replacement turns on and off continually

  Hi guys, First of all I would like to stress I'm beginner and probably I'm not doing something right. I replaced my old motherboard (AK35S20C Schuttle) with a new motherboard (Soltek SL-75DRV75). Unfortunately the replacement isn't working as expected. Symptoms are: The computer powers on, works less than a second and powers off. Then it powers on again and so on. It doesn't emit any sound, it looks like it resets very quickly. Do you have any suggestions what might be the problem?

• File permissions issue with an NFSv4 share, uploaded from a Mac Lion

  I have an NFSv4 share that was working fine, with Macs using Snow Leopard, to share files across the network. The NFS share has one cloned user/group that all clients autoconnect as. However, when I use a Lion Mac to copy a file from their user directory to the NFS, no other computer (mac SL/mac Lion/Win7) can edit/delete/write to the file that was uploaded - despite having the correct read/write/ex permissions visible on the NFS and through terminal. Attempting to edit the file permissions through Finder completely locks the file. I suspect this has something to do with Lion's ACLs (or maybe its version control) conflicting with NFSv4. Is there a way to disable or ignore extended ACLs or extended file permissions on the NFSv4 side, that would allow users to not run into this conflict? The work around currently is to use NFS Manager and set automounts to ignore ownership but installing NFS manager and configuring automounts for all of the computers seems more troubling than attempting to reconfigure the NFS settings. Advice?

• how can I get 32-bit program to run on 64-bit Ubuntu?

  Sorry to be asking this, but I have read quite a few posts and articles a lot of places wrt the issue I am having, to no avail. I am trying to get a Second Life Viewer (Firestorm) to run, and just keep getting the '64-bit error message' it throws. I have installed every 32-lib I can find, still doesn't work. I think I am surely missing some setting somewhere, or running Firestorm from the wrong place, or something, but I have no idea what. FWIW, Firestorm loads but doesn't behave right in the 32-bit version, either. I have actually tried several linux distros, 32 and 64-bit. Mint 32-bit runs it straight off, and Mint 64-bit throws the '64-bit error'. openSUSE, any version, won't run it at all. Oh, and all the other SL viewers I have tried behave the same way. I am beginning to wonder if my set-up just doesn't like linux. Here is my system info: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (2661 MHz) Memory: 4026 MB OS Version: Linux 3.2.0-29-generic-pae #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:25:43 UTC 2012 i686 Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.   I've just upgraded to Kubuntu 12.04 and having problems installing Gimp 2.8, I was wondering if anyone can help me? The bit that caught my attention was but 2.24.10-1oneiric6~ppa is to be installed - but I don't know what to do with this. I've rebooted and the error messages are the same. • How disable Apple iCal from popping up with every email invite/update?

  My iCal has new behavior (since upgrading to SL). Every time I get an ical attachment in Mail, the iCal app flies up in my face. I don't see any way to turn off this behavior and it's amazingly disruptive when I'm busy with other activities. Help? EDIT: I want iCal to add the invitations, so when I cmd-tab to the app those items are in the queue awaiting approval. What I am hoping to learn is how to stop the popup action forcing the application to become the top-level window.

• Access my mac's local server from a windows machine

  I am running my test sites on my mac, but I would like be able to use my windows machine to also access this server and be able to write / read fiels form this server. I can access my sites on my windows by using the IP address 192.168.1.???. But I would like to be able to use my windows machine to also access the fiels and edit them. Any ideas much appreciated. Some details: Mac OSX SL file sharing set to on. Windows 7 (tried setting up network map using afp://192.... but nothing) Both machines are connected to a local network, with several other machine (windows) Thanks

• Snow Leopard - Dock icons randomly disappear

  Snow Leopard works great! My mac's really fast after this. But sometimes the dock icons just disappear! I see the blue dot beneath when I click the empty space. So I know the item's there. But there are no icons! This happened for Safari and Downloads. Some people responded on the Apple forums that I should try and remove the dock's plist file. But this just restores the dock to its original settings! I don't want to lose my settings. Anyone else facing this issue with SL? Or is it a problem only I am facing? Thanks

• Second monitor not detected

  Hi I have two VGA monitors, my GPU is ATI PowerColor 6850 which has two DVI slots, I use adapters for both VGA monitors. If I connect any the two monitors in the first slot it will work right away (along the plugin confirmation sound). And if I connect any of both monitors to the second slot I won't get anything, nor a signal or confirmation sound. I also tried auto detecting via Catalyst Control Center and Windows Desktop Resolution. I have the latest drivers installed. EDIT: I found this on the Spec Description: Display Connectors DL-DVI-I/SL-DVI-D And in NewEgg: 2 x DVI (1 Single Link, 1 Dual Link) Could this have anything to do with my issue?

  I want to test integrity and global performances of no-ECC memory chips on a custom board Are there some tools that run under linux so I can monitor system and global temperature in the same time ? • Snow Leopard, PHP, and MySQL

  I have just installed Snow Leopard and now my PHP/MySQL program ends in a "Segmentation fault". I have been searching the web for a solution, I realize that there are some issues with SL/PHP/MySQL, but I have not found anything that works yet. I downloaded the binary MySQL package mysql-5.1.42-osx10.6-x86_64. I have updated the php.ini file as suggested at various posts. When I run PHP and connect to the MySQL server the behavior is a bit random. In many cases it works fine to connect and read data. In my specific case the PHP program constructs a LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE ... statement to load data from a text file. It should do several such queries after each other in a loop. It works one time but the halts in a "Segmentation fault". The program worked fine in Leopard, but not now. My versions are: OS 10.6.2, PHP 5.3.0, MySQL 5.1.42

Now after a few hours I can see that the kvm process of this guest is around 2700 MB, so 700 MB more than the guest should be able to consume.   The JCP Program will be hosting a Spec Lead call on 20 December on the topic of developing a Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK).  A Technology Compatibility Kit is a required output of a JSR at Final Release, along with the Specification and Reference Implementation (RI).   The TCK must test all aspects of a specification that impact how compatible an implementation of that specification would be, such as the public API and all mandatory elements of the specification. The Reference Implementation is required to pass the TCK. A vendor's implementation of a specification is only considered compatible if the implementation passes the TCK fully and completely.  The TCK is used to test implementations of the Final Specification to make sure that they are fully compatible. • What is a good java data structure for storing nested items (like cities in states)?

  I'm just getting started in Java and am looking for advice on a good way to store nested sets of data. For example, I'm interested in storing city population data that can be accessed by looking up the city in a given state. (Note: eventually, other data will be stored with each city as well, this is just the first attempt at getting started.) The current approach I'm using is to have a StateList Object which contains a HashMap that stores State Objects via a string key (i.e. HashMap<String, State>). Each State Object contains its own HashMap of City Objects keyed off the city name (i.e. HashMap<String, City>).
