  • Slow wired internet connection on Realtek RTL8168-8111 (Rev 6)

    I keep on seeing issues people are having with their wireless. I am having an issue with being wired into my router. I installed Ubuntu 11.10 the other day, on my custom PC. The motherboard I have installed on this PC is an ASUS P8H61-M. The issue I am having is with my speed. I have a dual boot, windows 7 and the new Ubuntu. On my Windows install I am getting test speeds from Speakeasy at 17Mbps and actual downloads around 2-3MB/s. With Ubuntu, I am getting test speeds from Speakeasy at 1.14Mbps and actual downloads around 60KB/s. I have disabled IPv6 and am no using GoogleDNS for my DNS, but it hasn't resolved the issue. I have scanned my router (WRT54GS Linksys) to disable IPv6 connections, and I am not seeing any option for that. I cannot figure out why I am getting such sluggish internet connection. Any help to resolve would be great!   • Stretching width correctly to 100% of an inline-block element in IE6 and IE7

    I have the following markup, where I am attempting to get the right hand side of the second table to align with the right hand side of the heading above it. This works in IE8, Firefox and Chrome, but in IE6/7 the table is incorrectly stretched to fill the width of the page. I'm using the Trip Switch hasLayout trigger to apply inline-block in IE6/7. Does anyone know how (or even if) I can get the table only to fill the natural width of the wrapper element displayed with inline-block in IE6/7?   • IE 8 Caching Problem

    One of my javascript sources had an extra comma that was throwing an error in IE8. So I opened up my editor, deleted the comma, and saved. I reloaded IE8, but it was still pulling the old js file. I deleted everything in "Delete Browsing History...", and restarted the browser. It is still pulling the old file. I even set up a log on my server to show whenever the js file was requested. When reloading with IE, the js file is never requested. I tried doing the same process in Chrome and FF, and it pulled the new file and logged properly on the server. Is there some other cache that I am failing to clear in IE that would cause this problem?

  • Computer never connects to the internet automatically on startup?

    I have my Windows Vista laptop connected directly to the router via an ethernet cable, and every time I switch the computer on, the computer cannot connect to the internet. It comes up as limited or no connectivity, I am assuming because it has not been assigned an IP address by the router - not too sure if this is right. The problem is usually fixed either by performing a repair through the networking control panel or removing and re-inserting the ethernet cable. It will also connect without doing any of these if the computer is left idle for about 20 minutes. It will connect fine wirelessly without the need for any of this, however I would prefer to connect via the cable. Any ideas how I can fix this? I have replaced the ethernet cable and router already (identical model) but these haven't helped. Thanks for any help on this.

    After upgrading to Precise, I am required to run 'sudo dhclient eth0' in a terminal in order to get the internet to work. Everything worked perfectly fine on Oneiric, so It's really puzzling me. I'm thinking it could possibly be something with the kernel, but who knows.     Hello. I am trying to install the vhds (virtual hard drive image) of IE6 on XP and IE 7 on XP packs available from Microsoft on Virtual Box. Virtual Box will only mount CD/DVD's and/or ISO's. How do I get it to use the Microsoft files? I need this to test web pages in IE6/IE7s. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. Is there a way to do this, or another way that will allow me to load XP/IE6 and XP/IE7 in Virtualbox Edit: Ok I got it to work but it says XP must be updated in 3 days due to hardware changes. Microsoft said this would be activated til January 1st 2010. Is there a way to bypass that?

    I run 64-bit Windows 7 and have both Internet Explorer 10 and a newly-downloaded copy of Google Chrome. I downloaded the latter when I found that I could not look (preview) the contents of books sold on Amazon (using it "Look Inside" feature) and wanted to try to get a handle on how extensive the problem was (i.e., whether it occurred on other browsers, too). It turns out that this isn't a problem with Chrome. However, I have grown accustomed over the years to IE and would prefer to resolve this problem instead. I have just examined this posting of mine via Chrome and the contents of the selected page are clearly visible.

Plus with a script, I could chain several scripts together. Maybe one to then fire up various antivirus and/or malware detectors. Anyone have a good one or can point to a good resource?

    I have Windows 7 as my Host OS which has wired Ethernet working. My guest OS on VirtualBox is Ubuntu 12.04. The problem is that I cannot browse. I have: Enabled sharing on Windows; Have used NAT, Bridged Adapter etc ( all possible combinations); With NAT, used PCnet-FAST II (Am79c973) combination. Ubuntu says "connected to wired ethernet1" but I cannot access websites. VirtualBox Host-Only Network in the Network and Sharing center shows that I don't have IPV4 and IPV6 connectivity.     I develop website using chrome and mac os as development environment. Since my audience is pretty specific I don't feel the necessity for too much backward compatibility with IE8 and less. However to my great dismay, even IE9 looks totally broken... I would like to know if there's on the web a tool that could tell me what probably went wrong with IE, that is a webapp that parse the rendered css and check which rules are probably totally broken in IE9.

  • Cannot connect to the Internet

    My desktop has Broadband wired connection - shows connected, but unable to load any web page in Ubuntu 12.04 but works fine with Windows 7. My laptop - wireless connection shows connected, but again does not load any web page. Please help.   • Ubuntu 10.04, I cannot get my computer to connect to the internet

    So at first I was unable to get my Belkin Surf & Share usb to install on my computer, so then I plugged my computer directly into my router and my computer won't acknowledge any connection. I know very little about how to use ubuntu, please help me. What I do know is: I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx In my 'edit connections', I go into 'wired' tab, select "wired connection 1" then 'edit' it brings up 4 tab options: Wired (I input the MAC address that's printed on the bottom of my router, MTU is set to automatic) 802.1x Security (currently: not checked) IPv4 Settings (currently: Automatic (DHCP) addresses only) IPv6 Settings (currently: Automatic)

  • Slow to sync music files?

    I have created a folder in the Ubuntu One sync folder and called it music. I have added various albums and the folder has started to sync. However the files were added back in October and still only the folders have synced and no music files. I tested this service before and added a single music file directly into the Ubuntu One folder (no sub folders) and within a few days it synced, however it seems anything in sub folders seem to stall or take a very long time. My ubuntu One program always says syncing and the progression bar creeps, but still no files synced. I know there are issues with speed but a month and going to sync? I recently tested the same files with Dropbox and it took 9 hours. I have port forwarded the https (443) port both in the software firewall and in my router, I tried disabling both firewalls too, either way it makes no difference. I have also tried both from home and the office on different Ubuntu systems. Is there anything anyone has done to improve this service? I am trying to integrate Ubuntu One service into the office to share project files but the syncing is taking to long. I am using the latest Ubuntu 10.10 (fully updated, fresh install), I love Ubuntu and wish to continue to support it anyway I can, so a solution would be good :-) Any help would be appreciated.   • Internet Explorer 10 aborting some stylesheets

    Strange problem exhibited only with IE10 on Windows 8. No other IE version, no other OS version. Some stylesheets are aborted, apparently in transport, intermittently. This seems to happen when there are three <link> tags in sequence. The tags are correctly specified and are being served from Amazon S3 over HTTPS. The first two items abort when (or prior to) loading. Altering the order of the items appears to make the first two items abort in all cases. This problem is intermittent, and different people can reproduce with differing success. I have seen a lot of conjecture about this on the web but no solution.

I am new to Ubuntu and therefore have some questions: 1.My hardware is Acer Emachines Intel Celeron T3000 1.8 3 Gig of Ram and Native Intel Intergrated graphics card. Can I run Ubuntu on this machine without any problems? 2.I am windows user and currently have windows 8. I want to install ubuntu but want to save all my directories on C:\ D:\ disks so that I can open my files in ubuntu. Is it possible to save my current directory system and save all my files after installing ubuntu? Can I open all my files? I have very important data in files so I dont want to lose them at all :) Thank You

  • Using shortkeys to search the internet for a term selected in a text editor/viewer

    It seems possible (as I learned from a comment to this question made by user55822) to use a command in order to search a term on the web by using "keybinding" the way Aretha is used. What the aforementioned user says is that "you could search mouse selection anywhere by using an app like Artha, or by keybinding sh -c 'firefox "http://translate.google.com/#en/fr/$(xclip -o)"' (example given translate english into french)" A lot of things are obscure for me here. I could use Artha or keybinding (as alternative), or both? How to do that in each case? and "The command I gave you will open google translate in Firefox with your mouse selection (text highlighted) as a query. Use sh -c 'firefox "https://www.google.com/search?q=$(xclip -o)"' if you want regular Google over Google translate. And obviously, that would work everywhere" I do not know what to do with that formula. What should I do exactly? How to use it? In what application?
