• Movie Library on Windows Media Center Extender

  I have a share setup on a NAS server with ripped versions of my DVDs. I pointed the Windows 7 version of the Windows Media Center Movie Library feature to the network share and it's able to find and play all my movies when running Windows Media Center from the local computer. When I try this on my Xbox 360 extender it never discovers any of my movies. Anyone able to get this to work?

• WTH? Upgrading Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 Problem: No Internet Connection?

  Earlier today I tried upgrading my Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Kaola from the update manager. (FYI: all 9.10 updates were applied prior to this) Everything was going well downloading until I got an error dialog informing me that some software packages weren't downloaded because of an Internet connection. Would say it was halfway thru. Anyway, Was told that the software packages that it did download, however, would kept and I figure it's not a big deal. Just run it again. But first ran Firefox to verify my connection as I haven't had any connection problems. But my internet connection was/is fine as evident by this posting. With that cleared, I ran the update manager again, clicked on "Upgrade" and this time I received "Could not download the release notes. Please check your internet connection" huh? This is my first time dealing w/ Ubuntu and my first upgrade so I am hoping someone can help. Not sure what the problem can be. I am can surf the web w/ no problems. Please help. PS: There was no installing at any point. Just downloading. PSS: The software it managed to download the first time around is now visible in the update manager but don't think I should install as I see in the compiz description it's for v1:0.8-4-0ubuntu2 I figure it's designed for 10.04 and might ruin things further if I install

  My Ubuntu Software Center has stopped working and I have been trying to uninstall/re-install it.   I have a problem with Ubuntu software center. It is "Searching" and "applying changes" for long period of time. I tired to cancel by clicking cross(X) mark. However, it is now stuck at "cancelling".   How can I classify whether a software is a medium with the ability to grow into an enterprise level software or whether it is already there? And how should I use the information to choose the appropriate language/tool to create the software? At first I was asking whether Java or PHP is the best tool to design enterprise level software, however I've suddenly realized that I am unable to put the software I'm tasked with redesigning into the proper scope so I'm lost. Edit: I guess I'm looking for tell tale signs in software that may tip the favour towards enterprise level type software in the sense of functional and operational characteristics; functional: what it does (multi-functional), Architectural characteristics such as highly modular. operational: multi-sourced and multi-homed, databases, e.t.c. To be honest the reason I ask is because I'm skeptical about the use of PhP to design a piece of employee and partial accounting software. I'm more tipping towards the use of JSP and an hmvc framework such as JSF, wickets, e.t.c. where as the other guy wants to go the PhP way although I'm not experienced with PhP, as far as I know it's not an OO oriented language hence my skepticsm towards it.

  i'm having issues with the Software Center. I'm trying to install Google Chrome, but can't because the software center crashes as soon as it opens. I've looked around at similar topics and found plenty but none of the suggested solutions have worked, so I wonder if this is different. When I type 'software-center' into the terminal, I get the error that other's have had: softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file I know this might seem like a duplicate, but none of the solution worked. • Software Architecture and Software Architecture Evaluation

  How many of us have worked at places where the concept of software architecture was ridiculed for wasting time and money? Even more ridiculous to them was the concept of evaluating software architecture. I think the next time that I am in this situation again, and I hope that I never am I will have to push for this methodology in the software development life cycle. I have spent way too many hours/days/months/years working poorly architected systems or systems that were just built ADHOC. This in software development must stop. I can understand why systems get like this due to overzealous sales staff, demanding management that wants everything yesterday, and project managers asking if things are done yet before the project has even started. But seriously, some time must be spent designing the applications that we write along with evaluating the architecture so that it will integrate will within the existing systems of an origination. If placed in this situation again, I will strive to gain buying from key players within the business, for example: Senior Software Engineers\Developers, Software Architects, Project Managers, Software Quality Assurance, Technical Services, Operations, and Finance in order for this idea to succeed with upper management. In order to convince these key players I will have to show them the benefits of architecture and even more benefits of evaluating software architecture on a system wide level. Benefits of Software Architecture Evaluation Places Stakeholders in the Same Room to Communicate Ensures Delivery of Detailed Quality Goals Prioritizes Conflicting Goals Requires Clear Explication Improves the Quality of Documentation Discovers Opportunities for Cross-Project Reuse Improves Architecture Practices Once I had key player buy in then and only then would I approach upper management about my plan regarding implementing the concept of software architecture and using evaluation to ensure that the software being designed is the proper architecture for the project. In addition to the benefits listed above I would also show upper management how much time is being wasted by not doing these evaluations. For example, if project X cost us Y amount, then why do we have several implementations in various forms of X and how much money and time could we have saved if we just reused the existing code base to give each system the same functionality that was already created? After this, I would mention what would happen if we had 50 instances of this situation? Then I would show them how the software architecture evaluation process would have prevented this and that the optimization could have leveraged its existing code base to increase the speed and quality of its development.   Are you a Media Center user who just can’t get enough Twitter? If so, you may want to check out the TwitterMCE plugin for Windows Media Center. Download and install TwitterMCE application. (See download link below) When you start Windows Media Center, you’ll find the TwitterMCE icon listed in the Extras. When you open the plug-in you’ll be prompted for a Paypal donation and have to wait out the 15 second timer. Next, you’ll need to log in to your Twitter account. Enter your Twitter account username and password. You can do this with the keyboard or by entering letters and numbers with a Media Center remote. When you are finished, select the Login button.   You’ll be prompted to select Standard or Video Mode. Standard displays items in a more vertical fashion. Video displays them horizontally and one at a time, and also allows you to watch Live TV, a movie, or video at the same time. Reading Your Tweets Clicking on Home allows you to read the latest Twitter messages from your friends. You can access the previous 20 tweets. Scroll up and down to see additional messages in Standard mode, ro right and left in Video mode. Click on the individual Twitter messages to get more information, such as which friend sent the tweet. Create a Tweet To Create a Tweet directly from Media Center, select the Update button. Type out your message using your keyboard or your remote and the on-screen keyboard. When you are finished, select Update to send your Twitter message. A few moments later your new tweet will appear.   To send a tweet while you are watching TV or a video, log in to the TwitterMCE app, choose the Video mode, and select Update.   Enter your tweet with the remote or keyboard. Select Update to send the tweet.   You can also view Mentions, Friends, and Followers selecting the appropriate button.   Scroll through your list of friends to read their latest tweets.   The TwitterMCE plugin works will Windows Vista Premium, Ultimate, and Windows 7. • Problem virtualizing Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit on VirtualBox 3.1 on Windows Vista 64 bit

  Software & Hardware Setup Host System : Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit Guest : Ubuntu 10.04 (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso) 32 bit VM : VirtualBox 3.1.8 Hardware : Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 4GB SDRAM What Happened I followed the tutorial called Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using VirtualBox located here: www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox At first I downloaded ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso because I figured that it would be a perfect fit with my Vista 64 OS. I was wrong because it turns out the my Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 CPU does not have Intel® Virtualization Technology. So I had to go with the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso which is 32 bit. This got me to the point where I could actually create the Ubuntu VM. So I set up the VM in VirtualBox (according to the tutorial I was following) to prepare for the Ubuntu 10.04 virtualization. Please go to my Picassa web album to see the screen shots of my VM settings and Ubuntu boot process so you can see what I experienced (they appear in the order that I experienced them in). www.picasaweb.google.com/rubysiddhi/ProblemVirtualizingUbuntu100432BitOnVirtualBox31OnWindowsVista64# The first 17 images show the VM settings. The last 8 show my attempt at virtualizing Ubuntu 10.04. You can see booting up but ultimately failing. The Specifics The one error message I got was: (process:210): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0) It appeared on a black screen that sort of looked like a Windows console screen but with out the c:\ or the ability to type. Then this error message got more complex when tons of text appeared in the screen. Pictures 23 - 25 in the album show this text. I should also mention that I found this post in the Ubuntu forums by zonination who seemed to have similar problems to mine even though they had a different set up. The main issue I think zonination and me may be having is the fact that we can not change the color mode to 32 bit while it is booting. I think the 16 bit color mode maybe making Ubuntu fail. Not certain though. Well I hope I explained my problem thoroughly and clearly. Thanks for the tutorial. It got me started but, now I hope to finish this process so I can start developing in Ubuntu. • Ubuntu Software Center not recognising my network connection

  I have installed Oneiric Beta on my laptop. As my Mobile Broadband refused to connect to Internet through network manager I'm now using wvdial to connect. Hence the network manager shows I'm not connected to any networks. When I try to install software from Ubuntu Software Center the 'Install' option remains disabled and under reviews section it says no network connection! As a workaround I kept installing applications from terminal which works fine. Therefore, my question is how to make Software Center recognize that I am connected to Internet?

When I try to open the software center (Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit) it will flash open, load for maybe 1-2 seconds, and then close.   Access an encrypted home directory when you’re not logged in – say, from a live CD – and all you’ll see is a README file. You’ll need a terminal command to recover your encrypted files. You should also back up your mount passphrase ahead of time – you may need this in the future.
