  • Frequent Disconnects ubuntu desktop 12.10 x64 intel 82579V e1000e

    - by user112055
    I'm having frequent disconnects with my new install of Ubuntu 12.10. I tried updating the kernel driver to the latest intel release to no avail. My expertise is spent. It happens anywhere between 1 min and 10 min. Any ideas? syslog: Dec 1 13:51:39 andromeda kernel: [ 972.188809] audit_printk_skb: 6 callbacks suppressed Dec 1 13:51:39 andromeda kernel: [ 972.188813] type=1701 audit(1354398699.418:199): auid=4294967295 uid=1000 gid=1000 ses=4294967295 pid=6039 comm="chrome" reason="seccomp" sig=0 syscall=4 compat=0 ip=0x7f26777d9205 code=0x50000 Dec 1 13:51:39 andromeda kernel: [ 972.188817] type=1701 audit(1354398699.418:200): auid=4294967295 uid=1000 gid=1000 ses=4294967295 pid=6039 comm="chrome" reason="seccomp" sig=0 syscall=4 compat=0 ip=0x7f26777d9205 code=0x50000 Dec 1 13:51:39 andromeda kernel: [ 972.188820] type=1701 audit(1354398699.418:201): auid=4294967295 uid=1000 gid=1000 ses=4294967295 pid=6039 comm="chrome" reason="seccomp" sig=0 syscall=4 compat=0 ip=0x7f26777d9205 code=0x50000 Dec 1 13:51:39 andromeda kernel: [ 972.188823] type=1701 audit(1354398699.418:202): auid=4294967295 uid=1000 gid=1000 ses=4294967295 pid=6039 comm="chrome" reason="seccomp" sig=0 syscall=4 compat=0 ip=0x7f26777d9205 code=0x50000 Dec 1 13:51:39 andromeda kernel: [ 972.188825] type=1701 audit(1354398699.418:203): auid=4294967295 uid=1000 gid=1000 ses=4294967295 pid=6039 comm="chrome" reason="seccomp" sig=0 syscall=4 compat=0 ip=0x7f26777d9205 code=0x50000 Dec 1 13:51:39 andromeda kernel: [ 972.331419] type=1701 audit(1354398699.558:204): auid=4294967295 uid=1000 gid=1000 ses=4294967295 pid=6039 comm="chrome" reason="seccomp" sig=0 syscall=2 compat=0 ip=0x7f26777d96b0 code=0x50000 Dec 1 13:53:12 andromeda NetworkManager[1115]: <info> (eth0): carrier now OFF (device state 100, deferring action for 4 seconds) Dec 1 13:53:12 andromeda kernel: [ 1064.894387] e1000e: e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Down Dec 1 13:53:16 andromeda NetworkManager[1115]: <info> (eth0): device state change: activated -> unavailable (reason 'carrier-changed') [100 20 40] Dec 1 13:53:16 andromeda NetworkManager[1115]: <info> (eth0): deactivating device (reason 'carrier-changed') [40] Dec 1 13:53:16 andromeda NetworkManager[1115]: <info> (eth0): canceled DHCP transaction, DHCP client pid 5946 Dec 1 13:53:16 andromeda avahi-daemon[890]: Withdrawing address record for fe80::ea40:f2ff:fee2:4d86 on eth0.   • curlftpfs mount disagrees with the fstab

    - by KayakJim
I am working with curlftpfs to mount a remote FTP directory locally in Kubuntu 12.04 64-bit. I have the following entry in my /etc/fstab: curlftpfs#ftp_user:ftp_password@ftp_server /mnt/nimh fuse ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,noauto,user,allow_other,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 I have created the directory in /mnt with the following: |-> ll /mnt total 4.0K drwxrwxr-x 2 jim fuse 4.0K Jan 6 09:56 nimh/ My user does belong to the fuse group as well: uid=1000(jim) gid=1000(jim) groups=1000(jim),27(sudo),105(fuse) I am able to mount manually without issue but then the /mnt changes to: |-> mount /mnt/nimh |-> ll /mnt total 0 drwxr-xr-x 1 jim jim 1.0K Dec 31 1969 nimh/ However when I attempt to umount /mnt/nimh I receive: umount: /mnt/nimh mount disagrees with the fstab My /etc/mtab looks like: curlftpfs#ftp://ftp_user:ftp_password@ftp_server/ /mnt/nimh fuse ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,user=jim 0 0 I am able to umount the filesystem without issue if I sudo. Any idea what I'm missing in order to be able to unmount without having to use sudo?

  • Mounting with Nautilus works but fstab gives "Host is down" error?

    - by Annan
I'm connecting to my university's VPN so I can connect to the network drive. The VPN seems to be working fine and I can connect to the drive by typing the address into Nautilus and entering my login details: smb://139.___.___.140/home However, this fstab entry doesn't work: //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ cifs domain=CS,username==___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai 0 0 Nor does manually mounting it: sudo mount -t cifs //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ -o domain=CS,username=___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai,user The only error it gives is: mount error(112): Host is down Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) It's obvious the host isn't down since I can view the share from Nautilus. Why is Nautilus mounting it fine but not the normal mount command? What could cause this error?

  • Cannot log in to the desktop on ubuntu 11.10?

    - by Jichao
The problem is, I could log in under the terminal, i could ifup eth0, i could do anything I want in the terminal, but if I use ctrl+alt+f7 goto the gnome login screen, after I input the correct password, the system just send me back to same login screen again. I have created a new user, but it didn't work. I have change all the files under ~/ to jichao:jichao(which is my username) with chown -hR jichao:jichao /home/jichao, but it didn't work too. I searched the internet, somebody said I should see the logs under /var/log/gdm, but there is not a /var/log/gdm directory in my box. • Ubuntu btrfs: how to remove rootflags=subvol=@ from grub.cfg

    - by mnpria
When i mount "btrfs" as a root filesytem, the mount info is as below: root@ubuntu1304Btrfs:~# mount /dev/mapper/ubuntu1304Btrfs--vg-root on / type btrfs (rw,subvol=@) Is there a way to have a mount info without the "subvol" information ? I have tried executing what was mentioned here. I also updated the grub.cfg. Still rootflags=subvol=@ is not removed. • CentOS - Configuring Puppet to play nice with SELinux

    - by Mike Purcell
I am running into an issue every time I attempt to start the puppetmasterd service, for which I receive the following error message: root@service1 ~ # -> /etc/init.d/puppetmaster start Starting puppetmaster: Could not prepare for execution: Got 1 failure(s) while initializing: change from absent to directory failed: Could not set 'directory on ensure: Permission denied - /etc/puppet/ssl [FAILED] Apparently there was a known issue with this scenario as outlined in this bug report, however in the bug report it states the issue has been resolved in selinux-policy-3.9.16-29.fc15, but the latest CentOS default upstream version is 3.7.19-155.el6_3.4. So I am trying to figure out the best solution. I can either create a local security policy to allow puppetmasterd the access it needs, or keep researching and install a newer version of selinux-policy outside of the default upstream channel. Anyone have any recommendations? Please don't recommend disabling SELinux... ----- Update ----- Here is the puppet.conf: [main] # The Puppet log directory. # The default value is '$vardir/log'. logdir = /var/log/puppet # Where Puppet PID files are kept. # The default value is '$vardir/run'. rundir = /var/run/puppet # Where SSL certificates are kept. # The default value is '$confdir/ssl'. ssldir = $vardir/ssl [master] certname=puppetmaster.ownij.lan dns_alt_names=puppetmaster.ownij.lan [agent] # The file in which puppetd stores a list of the classes # associated with the retrieved configuratiion. • Nautilus uses different permissions for mounted drives

    - by farhad0011
I've written two bash scripts to give read-only or read/write access to my NTFS partition: read-only access: sudo umount /media/Data_Drive/ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g -o ro,user,auto,nls=utf8,umask=0000,uid=1000 /dev/sda2 /media/Data_Drive read/write access: sudo umount /media/Data_Drive/ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g -o rw,user,auto,nls=utf8,umask=0000,uid=1000 /dev/sda2 /media/Data_Drive It works perfectly if I only use terminal to work with the files. It also works with Nautilus in read-only mode but not in the read/write mode. In fact, Nautilus gives me an error when I try to copy a file to Data_Drive saying "The destination is read-only". More funny, when I look at the permissions (by right-clicking on Data_Drive and then properties-permissions) I have all the required permissions to write a file in Data_Drive! I am so confused why Nautilus behaves strangely. I appreciate if anybody could solve the mystery!

  • Mounting filesystem with special user id set

    - by qbi
I want to mount the device /dev/sda3 to the directory /foo/bar/baz. After mounting the directory should have the uid of user johndoe. So I did: sudo -u johndoe mkdir /foo/bar/baz stat -c %U /foo/bar/baz johndoe and added the following line to my /etc/fstab: /dev/sda3 /foo/bar/baz ext4 noexec, noatime, auto, owner, nodev, nosuid, user 0 1 When I do now sudo -u johndoe mount /dev/sda3 the command stat -c %U /foo/bar/baz results in root rather than johndoe. What is the best way to mount this ext4-filesystem with uid johndoe set?

  • Weird permission issue with POSIX ACLs, NFS v3 on Linux

    - by jon
I have two Linux systems, both running Debian Squeeze. Versions of (I think) the stuff involved are: kernel: 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 ii nfs-kernel-server 1:1.2.2-4squeeze2 support for NFS kernel server ii libnfsidmap2 0.23-2 An nfs idmapping library ii nfs-common 1:1.2.2-4squeeze2 NFS support files common to client and server ii portmap 6.0.0-2 RPC port mapper (The client doesn't have nfs-kernel-server involved.) I have a directory with ACLs: # file: dirname # owner: jon # group: foogroup # flags: -s- user::rwx user:www-data:rwx group::r-x group:foogroup:rwx mask::rwx other::r-x default:... There are two users, neither one of which owns the directory: uid=3001(jake) gid=3001(jake) groups=3001(jake),104(wheel),3999(foogroup) uid=3005(nic) gid=3005(nic) groups=3005(nic),3999(foogroup) The jake user can create files in the directory without issues. The nic user can't. All UIDs/GIDs are the same on the client and server. I've verified (packet sniffing) that the right uids/gids get sent via AUTH_UNIX are correct-- uid=gid=3005, auxiliary gids=3005,3999-- and that the server replies with NFS3ERR_ACCESS, which the kernel on the client maps to EACCES (Permission denied). Can anyone help me here?

  • Numeric UIDs/GIDs in ACLs on OS X server (10.6)

    - by Oliver Humpage
Hi, On one (old OS X 10.4) server I'm tarring up some files which have ACLs. I'm then using ``tar -xp'' to untar the archive onto a new 10.6 server, which doesn't have any users/groups configured on it yet except the default admin (UID 501) (there's a reason for that, don't ask!). Obviously this means an "ls -lne" will list files and ACLs with numeric UIDs and GIDs. Now for the normal file permissions it makes sense: you get UIDs like "1037". And for some ACLs, it also makes sense: you get things like "AAAABBBB-CCCC-DDDD-EEEE-FFFF00000402" for groups (0x402 = GID 1026) and "FFFFEEEE-DDDD-CCCC-BBBB-AAAA000001F5" for users (0x1F5 = UID 501). However, some ACLs have a UIDs like "E51DA674-AE70-41BC-8340-9B06C243A262" or GIDs like "0A3FCD24-0012-46FA-B085-88519E55EF29" and I have absolutely no idea how to translate these IDs back into something that could be matched back to the original IDs (UID 1072 and GID 1047 respectively in this example). Can anyone help me translate these weird long hex strings? (Basically we're moving from local users to an Active Directory setup, so I want to move all files to the new server with permissions intact, then chmod, chgrp and set ACLs such that we translate old IDs to the new AD IDs. Hence needing some way to map between the sets. I don't believe there's an easier way to do this?) Many thanks, Oliver.

My sssd.conf looks like the following: [nss] filter_groups = root filter_users = root reconnection_retries = 3 [pam] reconnection_retries = 3 [sssd] domains = DOMAIN.COMPANY.COM config_file_version = 2 services = nss, pam [domain/DOMAIN.COMPANY.COM] ad_domain = DOMAIN.COMPANY.COM krb5_realm = DOMAIN.COMPANY.COM realmd_tags = manages-system joined-with-adcli cache_credentials = True id_provider = ad krb5_store_password_if_offline = True default_shell = /bin/bash ldap_id_mapping = True use_fully_qualified_names = True fallback_homedir = /home/%d/%u access_provider = ad My /etc/pam.d/common-auth looks like this: auth [success=3 default=ignore] pam_krb5.so minimum_uid=1000 auth [success=2 default=ignore] pam_unix.so nullok_secure try_first_pass auth [success=1 default=ignore] pam_sss.so use_first_pass # here's the fallback if no module succeeds auth requisite pam_deny.so # prime the stack with a positive return value if there isn't one already; # this avoids us returning an error just because nothing sets a success code # since the modules above will each just jump around auth required pam_permit.so # and here are more per-package modules (the "Additional" block) auth optional pam_cap.so However, when I try to SSH into the machine with my active directory user, I see the following in auth.log: Aug 21 10:35:59 c-u14-dev1 sshd[11285]: Invalid user nwalke from myip Aug 21 10:35:59 c-u14-dev1 sshd[11285]: input_userauth_request: invalid user nwalke [preauth] Aug 21 10:36:10 c-u14-dev1 sshd[11285]: pam_krb5(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname=nwalke uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=myiphostname Aug 21 10:36:10 c-u14-dev1 sshd[11285]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): check pass; user unknown Aug 21 10:36:10 c-u14-dev1 sshd[11285]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=myiphostname Aug 21 10:36:10 c-u14-dev1 sshd[11285]: pam_sss(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=myiphostname user=nwalke Aug 21 10:36:10 c-u14-dev1 sshd[11285]: pam_sss(sshd:auth): received for user nwalke: 10 (User not known to the underlying authentication module) Aug 21 10:36:12 c-u14-dev1 sshd[11285]: Failed password for invalid user nwalke from myip port 34455 ssh2 What do I need to do to allow active directory users the ability to log in?

  • LDAP Authentication woes

    - by Marcelo de Moraes Serpa
Hello list, I have a local OpenLDAP server with a couple of users. I'm using it for development purposes, here's the ldif: #Top level - the organization dn: dc=site, dc=com dc: site description: My Organization objectClass: dcObject objectClass: organization o: Organization #Top level - manager dn: cn=Manager, dc=site, dc=com objectClass: organizationalRole cn: Manager #Second level - organizational units dn: ou=people, dc=site, dc=com ou: people description: All people in the organization objectClass: organizationalunit dn: ou=groups, dc=site, dc=com ou: groups description: All groups in the organization objectClass: organizationalunit #Third level - people dn: uid=celoserpa, ou=people, dc=site, dc=com objectclass: pilotPerson objectclass: uidObject uid: celoserpa cn: Marcelo de Moraes Serpa sn: de Moraes Serpa userPassword: secret_12345 mail: [email protected] So far, so good. I can bind with "cn=Manager,dc=site,dc=com" and the 12345678 password (the local server password, setup on slapd.conf). However, I would like to bind with any user in under the people OU. In this case, I'd like to bind with: dn: uid=celoserpa, ou=people, dc=site, dc=com userPassword: secret_12345 But I'm getting a "(49) - Invalid Credentials" error everytime. I have tried through CLI tools (such as ldapadd, ldapwhoami, etc) and also ruby/ldap. The bind with these credentials fails with a invalid credentials error. I thought that it could be an ACL issue, however, the ACLs on slapd.conf seem to be right: access to attrs=userPassword by self write by dn.sub="ou=people,dc=site,dc=com" read by anonymous auth access to * by * read I was suspecting that maybe OpenLDAP doesn't compare against userPassword? Or maybe some ACL configuration I am missing that is somehow affecting the read access to userPassword for the specific DN. I'm really lost here, any suggestion appreciated! Cheers, Marcelo.

  • Openldap with ppolicy

    - by nitins
We have working installation of OpenLDAP version 2.4 which is using shadowAccount attributes. I want to enable ppolicy overlays. I have gone through the steps provided at OpenLDAP and ppolicy howto. I have made the changes to slapd.conf and imported the password policy. On restart OpenLDAP is working fine and I can see the password policy when I do a ldapsearch. The user object looks like given below. # extended LDIF # # LDAPv3 # base <dc=xxxxx,dc=in> with scope subtree # filter: uid=testuser # requesting: ALL # # testuser, People, xxxxxx.in dn: uid=testuser,ou=People,dc=xxxxx,dc=in uid: testuser cn: testuser objectClass: account objectClass: posixAccount objectClass: top objectClass: shadowAccount shadowMax: 90 shadowWarning: 7 loginShell: /bin/bash uidNumber: 569 gidNumber: 1005 homeDirectory: /data/testuser userPassword:: xxxxxxxxxxxxx shadowLastChange: 15079 The password policy is given below. # default, policies, xxxxxx.in dn: cn=default,ou=policies,dc=xxxxxx,dc=in objectClass: top objectClass: device objectClass: pwdPolicy cn: default pwdAttribute: userPassword pwdMaxAge: 7776002 pwdExpireWarning: 432000 pwdInHistory: 0 pwdCheckQuality: 1 pwdMinLength: 8 pwdMaxFailure: 5 pwdLockout: TRUE pwdLockoutDuration: 900 pwdGraceAuthNLimit: 0 pwdFailureCountInterval: 0 pwdMustChange: TRUE pwdAllowUserChange: TRUE pwdSafeModify: FALSE I do not what should be done after this. How can the shadowAccount attributes be replaced with the password policy.

  • Listing group members using ldapsearch

    - by colemanm
Our corporate LDAP directory is housed on a Snow Leopard Server Open Directory setup. I'm trying to use the ldapsearch tool to export an .ldif file to import into another external LDAP server to authenticate with externally; basically trying to be able to use the same credentials internally and externally. I've got ldapsearch working and giving me the contents and attributes of everything in the "Users" OU, and even filtering down to only the attributes I need: ldapsearch -xLLL -H ldap://server.domain.net / -b "cn=users,dc=server,dc=domain,dc=net" objectClass / uid uidNumber cn userPassword > directorycontents.ldif That gives me a list of users and properties that I can import to my remote OpenLDAP server. dn: uid=username1,cn=users,dc=server,dc=domain,dc=net objectClass: inetOrgPerson objectClass: posixAccount objectClass: organizationalPerson uidNumber: 1000 uid: username1 userPassword:: (hashedpassword) cn: username1 However, when I try the same query on an OD "group" instead of a "container," the results are something like this: dn: cn=groupname,cn=groups,dc=server,dc=domain,dc=net objectClass: posixGroup objectClass: apple-group objectClass: extensibleObject objectClass: top gidNumber: 1032 cn: groupname memberUid: username1 memberUid: username2 memberUid: username3 What I really want is a list of users from the top example filtered based on their group memberships, but it looks like membership is set from the Group side, rather than the user account side. There must be a way to filter this down and only export what I need, right?

  • Openldap, groups, admin groups, etc

    - by Juan Diego
We have a samba server as PDC with OpenLDAP. So far everything is working, even windows 7 can log on to the Domain. Here is the tricky part. We have many departments, each department has it's own IT guys, and these IT guy should be able to create users in their department and change any info of the users in their department. My Idea was to create 2 groups for each department, For example: Department1 and Admins Department1. Admins Deparment1 has "write" priviledges for members of group Department dn: ou=People,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec objectClass: top objectClass: organizationalUnit ou: People dn: cn=Admins,ou=Group,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec objectClass: groupOfNames objectClass: top cn: Admins dn: cn=Admins Department1,cn=Admins,ou=Group,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec objectClass: groupOfNames objectClass: top cn: Admins Department1 member: uid=jdc,ou=People,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec structuralObjectClass: groupOfNames I dont know if you should make Department1 as part of Domain Users dn: cn=Deparment1,cn=Domain Users,ou=Group,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec objectClass: groupOfNames objectClass: top cn: Deparment1 member: uid=user1,ou=People,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec Or just create the deparments like this. dn: cn=Deparment1,ou=Group,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec objectClass: groupOfNames objectClass: top cn: Deparment1 member: uid=user1,ou=People,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec I seems that when you use smbldap tools bydefault the users are part of Domain Users even if you dont have them as part of Domain Users in the memberUid attribute, when I use finger they showup as part of the Domain Users group. I dont want the Departments Admins to be Domain Admins because they have power over all the users, unless I am mistaken. I also have trouble with the ACLs. I was trying to create an acl for members of this Admins group, I was trying with this search, but didnt work ldapsearch -x "(&(objectClass=organizationalPerson)(member=cn=Admins Department1,ou=Group,dc=mydomain,dc=com,dc=ec))" I am open to suggestions.

  • XP Client for NFS failure dialog on startup, but drive mapping works

    - by Matt Bennett
I'm mounting an NFS share to some windows machines using the tools that come in the Services for UNIX Administration toolkit. I've set up the User Name Mapping service to use local passwd and group files. I had to manually start the User Name Mapping service, and then created an 'advanced map' from the XP machine's user to a uid that exists in on my NFS server, like so: Windows User: Matt Bennett UNIX Domain: PCNFS UNIX User: mattbennett UID: 10250 Primary: * I can map a network drive without any issues, and it correctly identifies the UID and GID to use, but when I reboot I get this message: "An error occurred while connecting to the NFS server. Make sure that the Client for NFS service has started. If the problem persists make sure Client for NFS service can communicate with User Name Mapping or PCNFS server." After dismissing the dialog, the machine finishes booting and the network drive is there in My Computer with the title "Disconnected Network Drive", but I can open it I can see the network share without a problem, and then it drops the 'disconnected' from its title. It seems like the services are starting in the wrong order or something, so the first attempt to connect fails but subsequent ones work as expected. There don't seem to be any symptoms apart from the dialog box, but obviously something's not quite right. What have I done wrong? Thanks, Matt.

  • PostgreSQL user authentication against PAM

    - by elmuerte
I am trying to set up authentication via PAM for PostgreSQL 9.3. I already managed to get this working on an Ubuntu 12.04 server, but I am unable to get this working on a Centos-6 install. The relevant pg_hba.conf line: host all all 0.0.0.0/0 pam pamservice=postgresql93 The pam.d/postgressql93 is the default config shipped with the official postgresql 9.3 package: #%PAM-1.0 auth include password-auth account include password-auth When a user tries to authenticate the following is reported in secure log: hostname unix_chkpwd[31807]: check pass; user unknown hostname unix_chkpwd[31808]: check pass; user unknown hostname unix_chkpwd[31808]: password check failed for user (myuser) hostname postgres 10.1.0.1(61459) authentication: pam_unix(postgresql93:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=26 euid=26 tty= ruser= rhost= user=myuser The relevant content of password-auth config is: auth required pam_env.so auth sufficient pam_unix.so nullok try_first_pass auth requisite pam_succeed_if.so uid >= 500 quiet auth required pam_deny.so account required pam_unix.so account sufficient pam_localuser.so account sufficient pam_succeed_if.so uid < 500 quiet account required pam_permit.so The problem is with the pam_unix.so. It is unable to validate the password, and unable to retrieve the user info (when I remove the auth entry of pam_unix.so). The Centos-6 install is only 5 days old, so it does not have a lot of baggage. The unix_chkpwd is suid and has execute rights for everybody, so it should be able to check the shadow file (which has no privileges at all?).

  • SSH & SFTP: Should I assign one port to each user to facilitate bandwidth monitoring?

    - by BertS
There is no easy way to track real-time per-user bandwidth usage for SSH and SFTP. I think assigning one port to each user may help. Idea of implementation Use case Bob, with UID 1001, shall connect on port 31001. Alice, with UID 1002, shall connect on port 31002. John, with UID 1003, shall connect on port 31003. (I do not want to lauch several sshd instances as proposed in question 247291.) 1. Setup for SFTP: In /etc/ssh/sshd_config: Port 31001 Port 31002 Port 31003 Subsystem sftp /usr/bin/sftp-wrapper.sh The file sftp-wrapper.sh starts the sftp server only if the port is the correct one: #!/bin/sh mandatory_port=3`id -u` current_port=`echo $SSH_CONNECTION | awk '{print $4}'` if [ $mandatory_port -eq $current_port ] then exec /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server fi 2. Additional setup for SSH: A few lines in /etc/profile prevents the user from connecting on the wrong port: if [ -n "$SSH_CONNECTION" ] then mandatory_port=3`id -u` current_port=`echo $SSH_CONNECTION | awk '{print $4}'` if [ $mandatory_port -ne $current_port ] then echo "Please connect on port $mandatory_port." exit 1 fi fi Benefits Now it should be easy to monitor per-user bandwidth usage. A Rrdtool-based application could produce charts like this: I know this won't be a perfect calculation of the bandwidth usage: for example, if somebody launches a bruteforce attack on port 31001, there will be a lot of traffic on this port although not from Bob. But this is not a problem to me: I do not need an exact computation of per-user bandwidth usage, but an indicator that is approximately correct in standard situations. Questions Is the idea of assigning one port for each user is a good one? Is the proposed setup an reliable one? If I have to open dozens of ports for many users, should I expect a performance drawback? Do you know a rrdtool-based application which could make the chart above?
