  • Really new to XCode. Why won't the thing run?

    Hi, I'm trying to follow the April 2009 and Winter 2010 Stanford iPhone app development videos and I'm running up against the same problems with both. First, they don't appear to be using the latest version of XCode - the Outlets and Actions panels are in a different window and there is little info on the net about this (other than one other post on S.O.F.) Second, having got to the point where I've managed to connect the slider, label and changedLabelText connections, I save, build and run the app - the simulator loads, the app loads and then promptly closes again. What's going on? I have not written any code yet and I still have an app which, while it compiles, does not behave! Is there a better starting point for an XCode noob than the Stanford vids?   • My jQuery and PHP give different results on the same thing?

    Hey all, Annoying brain numbing problem. I have two functions to check the length of a string (primarily, the js one truncates as well) heres the one in Javascript: $('textarea#itemdescription').keyup(function() { var charLength = $(this).val().length; // Displays count $('span#charCount').css({'color':'#666'}); $('span#charCount').html(255 - charLength); if($(this).val().length >= 240){ $('span#charCount').css({'color':'#FF0000'}); } // Alerts when 250 characters is reached if($(this).val().length >= 255){ $('span#charCount').css({'color':'#FF0000'}); $('span#charCount').html('<strong>0</strong>'); var text = $('textarea#itemdescription').val().substring(0,255) $('textarea#itemdescription').val(text); } }); And here is my PHP to double check: if(strlen($_POST["description"])>255){ echo "Description must be less than ".strlen($_POST["description"])." characters"; exit(); } I'm using jQuery Ajax to post the values from the textarea. However my php validation says the strlen() is longer than my js is essentially saying. So for example if i type a solid string and it says 0 or 3 chars left till 255. I then click save and the php gives me the length as being 261. Any ideas? Is it to do with special characters, bit sizes that js reads differently or misses out? Or is it to do with something else?   • Is there such a thing as too many tables?

    I've been searching stackoverflow for about an hour now and couldn't find any topics related, so I apologize if this is a duplicate question. My inquery is this. Is there a point at which there are too many tables in a database? Even if the structure is well organized, thought out, and perfectly facilitates the design intent? I have a database that is quickly approaching 40 tables - about 10 main ones, and over 30 ancillary tables (junction tables, 'enumeration' tables, etc). Am I just a bad developer - or should I be trying something different? It seems like so many to me, I'm really afraid at how it will impact the performance of the project. I have done a lot of condensing where possible, grouped similar things where possible, etc. The database is built in MS-SQL 2008.

  • Is there really such a thing as a char or short in modern programming?

    Howdy all, I've been learning to program for a Mac over the past few months (I have experience in other languages). Obviously that has meant learning the Objective C language and thus the plainer C it is predicated on. So I have stumbles on this quote, which refers to the C/C++ language in general, not just the Mac platform. With C and C++ prefer use of int over char and short. The main reason behind this is that C and C++ perform arithmetic operations and parameter passing at integer level, If you have an integer value that can fit in a byte, you should still consider using an int to hold the number. If you use a char, the compiler will first convert the values into integer, perform the operations and then convert back the result to char. So my question, is this the case in the Mac Desktop and IPhone OS environments? I understand when talking about theses environments we're actually talking about 3-4 different architectures (PPC, i386, Arm and the A4 Arm variant) so there may not be a single answer. Nevertheless does the general principle hold that in modern 32 bit / 64 bit systems using 1-2 byte variables that don't align with the machine's natural 4 byte words doesn't provide much of the efficiency we may expect. For instance, a plain old C-Array of 100,000 chars is smaller than the same 100,000 ints by a factor of four, but if during an enumeration, reading out each index involves a cast/boxing/unboxing of sorts, will we see overall lower 'performance' despite the saved memory overhead?

  • In Log4Net XML configuration is Priority the same thing as Level?

    I inherited some code that uses the priority element under the root in its xml configuraiton. This is just like the example at http://iserialized.com/log4net-for-noobs/ which shows: <root> <priority value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="LogFileAppender" /> <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"/> </root> However, the log4net configuration examples at http://logging.apache.org/log4net/release/manual/configuration.html always show it using the level element: <root> <level value="DEBUG" /> <appender-ref ref="A1" /> </root> In this type of configuration is <priority> the same as <level> ? Can someone point me to somewhere in the docs where this is explained?

  • is there such a thing as xsl:fo reporting or xsl:fo simulation?

    Hi, I am trying to determine if MY xsl:fo generated PDF file will exceed one page or not, without actually generating the output. We use Apache-FOP 0.95 on our server, and the XML data is being generated using a PHP DOMDocument class before being passed onto an XSL-FO template. My question: Are there PHP libraries out there that can simulate xsl:fo output and send me reports that I can use in my application? Alternatively, is there a way for the Apache FOP itself (or sibling Java app) that sends reports without actually generating a file? I have been reading the FOP documentation, and aside from some things I can not fully understand, I have not been able to find a way to do that from within FOP. Any advice is much appreciated.

  • Is there such a thing as a converter from php to html?

    Don't think that I'm mad, I understand how php works! That being said. I develop personal website and I usually take advantage of php to avoid repetion during the development phase nothing truly dynamic, only includes for the menus, a couple of foreach and the likes. When the development phase ends I need to give the website in html files to the client. Is there a tool (crawler?) that can do this for me instead of visiting each page and saving the interpreted html?

  • What is the closest thing MATLAB has to namespaces?

    We have a lot of MATLAB code in my lab. The problem is there's really no way to organize it. Since all the functions have to be in the same folder to be called (or you have to add a bunch of folders to MATLAB's path environment variable), it seems that we're doomed have loads of files in the same folder, all in the global namespace. Is there a better way to organize our files and functions? I really wish there were some sort of module system...

  • Is there such a thing as a C# style extension method in C++ ?

    I'm currently learning C++ and i run into the simple problem of converting an int to a string. I've worked around it using: string IntToString(int Number) { stringstream Stream; Stream << Number; return Stream.str(); } but though it would be more elegant to use something like: int x = 5; string y = x.toString(); but how do i add the toString() method to a built in type? or am i missing something totally fundamental?

  • ok.. what's with this 'var' thing in C#?? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Use of var keyword in C# I have ReSharper, which is a pretty good tool to remind me of some good programming practices.. for example it always recommends that I use the most narrowed convention I can use when passing variables to functions (such as recommending IEnumerable instead of List when I fail to use any of List's specific function. Awesome. However, one of its new behaviors (for C# 4.0) is to remind me at every opportunity to use 'var' when declaring variables. Now I know that there are some valid uses of 'var', but do I really want to use it all the time? I'm sure that ReSharper has a reason for this, but I can't figure it out.. for me it makes the code less readable..

  • Can a second stored procedure doing the same thing finish before first one?

    Hello, I have an audit record table that I am writing to. I am connecting to MyDb, which has a stored procedure called 'CreateAudit', which is a passthrough stored procedure to another database on the same machine called 'CreatedAudit' as well. I call the CreateAudit stored procedure from my application, using subsonic as the DAL. The first time I call it, I call it with the following (pseudocode): Result = CreateAudit(recordId, "Opened") Right after that, I call: Result2 = CreateAudit(recordId, "Closed") In my second stored procedure it is supposed to mark the record that was created by the CreateAudit(recordId, "Opened") with a status of closed. It works great if I run them independently of one another, but when they run in sequence in the application, the record is not marked as "Closed". When I run SQL profiler I see that both queries ran, and if I copy the queries out and run them from query analyzer the record gets marked as closed 100% of the time! When I run it from the application, about once every 20 times or so, the record is successfully marked closed - the other 19 times nothing happens, but I do not get an error! Is it possible for the .NET app to skip over the ouput from the first stored procedure and start executing the second stored procedure before the record in the first is created? When I add a "WAITFOR DELAY '00:00:00:003'" to the top of my stored procedure, the record is also closed 100% of the time. My head is spinning, any ideas why this is happening! Thanks for any responses, very interested in hearing how this can happen.
