• open source solution to a gateway for a network of a housing cooperative of 150 people

  i just inherited a barely functioning network for a student housing cooperative of about 150 people. in it's current state, as i understand it from the previous person in charge of the network, we have working wireless access points and working ethernet cords going to working gigabit switches going to a barely functioning gateway (right now a simple home router) to one of three possible outbound connections. it is possible to connect to the network through the wireless or ethernet, but especially during peak hours, packets / connections are likely dropped or otherwise get no response. my intuition tells me to replace the gateway with something that can handle multiple outbound connections (WAN) and one inbound connection (LAN), while the rest of the network seems suitable for now. i'm somewhat knowledgable in Linux (been using Debian after first Arch Linux) and i want to use as much open source as possible, but i'm confused whether or not a simple server that i could easily understand will work for this situation. do i need specialized hardware to handle the switching more effectively? if so, what are my options? (i found this, thoughts?) or if a Debian server would work, anything else i should about the specs required for this type of server? also links to any useful information on using open source to maintain this type of network would be most appreciated. <3 P.S. crossposted http://redd.it/yybp2.

  Hello. Unfortunately, (written) midterms are necessary in most university CS programs in the world. They tell us how well our students (and ourselves as teachers) are doing. Needless to say, designing midterms for a C Programming Language course is not easy. For instance, when we do program for real, we have a myriad of information at our disposal: websites, books, cheat sheets to "remember" the syntax and so on. My question is this: did you find any way, during your years at school or training, where you said: ok, this midterm evaluation of my programming skills is tough, but fair. For instance: I found "find 5 problems with this code"-type questions hard but interesting and telling. Are there any others? Thanks.

  hello.i am so new to networking i want to design a large scale network for an organization with HQ and two branches. i want to use class A address for that.my questions are: if i am using the network address 30.0.0.0 for the whole organization how can it be different from another organization company or whatever which is using the same address in another country? now i have the three locations for this organization,so i need 5 subnets [one for the HQ,two for branch A and branch B , one for connecting A to HQ and one for connecting branch B with HQ since i will use central DHCP server at the HQ,is that(number of subnetting) right? is it advisable to use class A or class B for this organization it term of address that will be wasted (lets say it is a university with two branches in two different states)?! that is all your help is highly appropriated.

• Advice needed: What tech expertise do I need to accomplish my goal?

  I have a business plan & money to hire a developer - the essentials involve simple online games for children (played via traditional computer over the internet) such that their scores are uploaded to a database that can be viewed via a nice portal. What I don't know is: what technologies I would want my developer to know (the only somewhat unusual requirement I have is that the games have relatively accurate timing of keypresses/mouse presses) how much I should expect to pay (in general, what is the appropriate range) how many hours a program of the complexity of a simple tower defense -type game should take to develop (to be clear, the idea is not to implement TD, but rather other games of similar complexity) whether I should go with capable acquaintances, some online kind of online web-dev bidding site, or just try to find a capable undergraduate at the local university who I can wow with his/her first big paycheck, how I should communicate the software's specifications to my hired developer... Is there a standard I should be using? whether I should hire a webdev consultant for a few hours to help me answer these questions, instead of asking stackoverflow Thanks for any advice!

We work for a University and specialize in CRUD web apps for internal customers who are always changing requirements along the way. So, my question is...How do we best implement Scrum techniques? Supplemental concerns: Is it recommended to quit Waterfall "cold turkey" in order to facilitate the transition or do you feel a progressive approach is more effective? • Using GLOrtho to view Side, Front, Top perspectives of a 3D scene

  Dear all, I'm building a game level editing app as part of a university project. In my application I have multiple viewports, a Perspective viewport and three orthographic views all setup to view the same scene. I've successfuly setup the orthographic views and can translate and scale them to mimic scrolling and zooming. Unfortunately, I'm having one problem - my scene still contains 3 dimensions, so objects viewed in orthographic mode of certain depths are clipped when they fall outside of my clipping volume. Most 3D authoring tools or level editors allow you to view all objects in orthographic mode regardless of depth. I guess what I need to do is scale my scene in the appropriate dimension so that all values lie between 1 and -1, is there a straightforward way of going about this? • Suggestions for a mashup application

  I have to write a mashup application for an university course and I have to use some APIs, but I need to choose by myself what to use and what the final application should do. Unfortunately I never made an application like this, so I'm not sure what to do... I don't want to code a stupid app which uses google maps' APIs since the web seems to be full of stuff like this.   Hi! Im doing a Naval Battle for University. I decided to do it in C#. My board is 20 x 20 of mini (20x20) PictureBoxes. The problem is when I load the board I got a huuuge delay for draw all of them in the panel which contains them. So I thought to ThreadPool my method to escale the picuteres boxes creation and drawing fester. Is this the correct aproach? I'm wondering if even if I launch 20 threads to create and set the picturesoboxes together I will still have the graphic delay. • Word 2007 won't run, tries to reinstall, fails with error 1402.

  Okay, this problem has been plaguing this computer for a while now. We tried googling, and none of the answers found helped to solve the problem. So, I am now posting the answer here for posterity. Office 2007 Home/Student edition was installed on the computer, running Vista (32-bit). One day, Word just up and stopped working. All the other programs continued to operate as expected. But every time you would click the icon for Word, it would pop up an install dialog, with a message reading "Preparing to install...". After a few minutes of the little progress bar going and going, it errors out, and gives error 1402, something to the effect of unable to access registry key HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\.wll\.... Searching around, every answer i found had to do with reassigning the permissions on this key, giving full rights to SYSTEM or to Everyone, and propagating the changes down to all sub-keys. When ever this was attempted though, it would tell us that we were unable to access the key due to permissions, even though we had run regedit as Administrator and are logged on with an administrative account. We also tried uninstalling Office and reinstalling it, as well as doing a repair install. Both these attempts also threw the same 1402 error. Also of note was that the executable for Word (winword.exe) was MIA and no longer to be found in the Office install directory.

• Using Vim on the ipad... Any tips?

  I'm itching to program on my ipad. With the iSSH app I was able to log on to my university's server and even open an X server window. Unfortunately, the experience within iSSH is still rather clumsy. When using vim, the bottom line is hidden by the keyboard. Does anyone have any experience with SSH connections and the ipad or iphone? Are there better applications to use? I would prefer not to jailbreak my ipad.

• Which build tool to teach?

  While similiar questions have been asked, this one's focused on which is best/easiest to teach. I'm giving a weekly tutorial at my university focusing on data structures and algorithms. Fromn time to time I introduce tools which may prove helpful in future projects like JUnit, Mercurial, Eclipse etc.. I plan to show them some kind of build tool but I'm not sure which one to choose. I by myself have very little knowledge about build tools, except a little experience in using make. It's more the concept of a build tool I want to show them, not a special tool per se. Which would be the most easiest/future proof/whatever tool to show them? I've read a little bit about Gradle, which looks nice, but so far I think Ant could be a good choice (it's a Java course I'm giving).

• Implementing Dijkstra's Algorithm

  I've been tasked (coursework @ university) to implement a form of path-finding. Now, in-spec, I could just implement a brute force, since there's a limit on the number of nodes to search (begin, two in the middle, end), but I want to re-use this code and came to implement Dijkstra's algorithm. I've seen the pseudo on Wikipedia and a friend wrote some for me as well, but it flat out doesn't make sense. The algorithm seems pretty simple and it's not a problem for me to understand it, but I just can't for the life of me visualize the code that would realize such a thing. Any suggestions/tips?

  Hi, I am a recent graduate and am looking to start a career in web development. Its kind of a catch 22 at the moment as I have a fair bit of programming experience from university but not really in web development and to get a job in web development a portfolio is typically required. So, I am looking to start a building a few application in order to have something to show potential employers. Im more into the backend stuff although am just as comfortable with front end development. Does anyone have any thoughts on some potential projects that would be both relatively quick (as i need to get a job soon!) to build but show off enough programming knowlege / skills to be impressive to employers. At the moment i am also learning to use the zend framework and I would hope to find work using such a framework (mvc). My initial thoughts would be things like a webmail app or maybe a custom CMS. Any ideas would be greatley appreciated.

• How to read a technical book to remember most of it?

  There are many technical books that become thinker and thicker and the pressure from the technical society is more and more to read them and remember many concepts described in them. But it's so hard to do it. I have only a few hour a week to read them and when I reach the middle of the book I forgot most of what I've read at the beginning, because lots of time passed. If I go back, I'll just re-read the same stuff over and over, never going past 50% of the book. So, even after I finished reading a thick tech book I forgot most of it. How do you remember all that stuff? I had a talk in my University on how to do it. They advised to use some cards with basic info so that you can remember the details when you look at it. Do you use such cards or do you have other ideas how to do it?

  Hello, I was wondering, when is the right time or the correct project size to start using project management applications ( like Redmine or Trac ). I have a serious project, for now it's only me developing, but I use redmine to set my project versions, issues, and estimations. I think it's a good idea, because you never know when somebody else is going to join the team, and also allows me to organize myself effectively. I ask this question because I was Teaching Assistant at my university for one year in a row for a course, and I got questions about this very very often. While I'm a believer of the KISS principle, I think that learning to use this tools early is a win-win most of the time. I really believe that we can avoid this question to become argumentative, and that there's somewhat of a consensus about this issue, which I consider quite important in todays software development world. • My map callouts don't display the image when clicked

  I am developing an iPhone application for a university project and I'm new to iPhone development. I have looked through Apple's MapCallouts code but it doesn't seem feasible to implement it. So far my code displays a map, drops annotations, displays the title and it displays the right call out button. But this is where I encounter problems. When I press on the callout button, it displays a blank view controller but it should display a different image for every callout that's tapped and this isn't happening so far.   Background I have an excel spreadsheet with the results of a pass/no-pass exam. I know excel is not a database nor a reporting tool per-se, but it would be great if I could get it to do this.

  Hi all, a bit of advice required here :). I recently graduated(Computer Science), and need to decide a path to take programming/technology wise. I have knowledge of Java, C, SQL most of it is university level stuff. I work daily with PHP/SQL building web apps. Which language / technology would you advise me to learn. I am very interested in Database management, GIS etc. Web dev is also very interesting to me. It is all a bit confusing since i would like to learn something that will have a value at least in the near future. I would like to have some ideas on which language/technology is god choice in order to be marketable.
