• Why does a pdf file download result in varying bytes logged, all with sc-status 200

  I have a mojoportal CMS installation on an IIS7 server where users are reporting problems downloading a pdf file. It always downloads fine for me and most others, either displaying in browser or in Adobe Reader. Using logparser to query the IIS logs, all the responses are status 200 (OK) or 304 (Not modified), but the bytes sent vary quite a bit. Sometimes zero, some 211, some about half the full file size of 27059, and lots in between. Plenty show the full size of 27059. Do these other entries for smaller byte counts represent errors of some kind, correlating with the problems reported? Is this likely to be a browser/client issue or a server side problem? If there is any other info that would be helpful let me know. This is a shared hosting server though so I am somewhat limited in what I can dig into on the server.

• Windows Swap (Page File): Enable or Disable?

  From my personal experience I've noticed that disabling the page file in Windows XP has given me, in general, the most speed gain out of any other software change I can make. Obviously this has to be done when a significant amount of RAM is available. Typically I find that it works nicely with +2GB of RAM. The only issues I've ever really had were loading up Adobe Photoshop. Is this really a speed improvement or am I imagining it? Note: In order to actually turn it off, you must not just set it to 0MB, but disable it. Otherwise Windows will just expand it when it needs to in order to meet its needs.

• Photoshop CS4 slowing down, need advice to improve speed.

  Hi, I just recently experienced problem with my Photoshop, It seem that it is slowing down when I am doing graphics design. Big or small files ( from 20 x 20 inch 300 dpi of resolution to 800x600 72 resolution ) it is really slowing down. Particularly when I am panning to my project It just get stuck for a few seconds then back to normal with slow movement. Can you guess what's wrong? I have an updated antivirus and I don't think virus is causing it. other adobe suite is working fine just my photoshop. I am running in windows 7, using Intel Core2 Duo 2.40 Ghz and has an Installed Ram of 2 GB. My primary scratch disk has 21 Gigabyte left and the secondary has a 13.89 GB. I need a solution urgently. I am planning to reformat my computer just to resolve my problem.

  How to get opentype fonts in .otf format working on Ubuntu and OpenOffice 3.2? It would be great if I could use opentype features in OOo, but I'll be glad enough if I could use them even converted to TTF. I've tried numerous ways described on the net, but with no success. For now, I succeeded with using OTF fonts in Inkscape. How to get it working with OOo? Any news about opentype in upcoming versions of OOo? Can you recommend any other alternative to MS Word, or better yet Adobe Indesign with good OTF support?

  Hi, I need some suggestions and alternatives in buying laptops. Me and my Girlfriend are planning to buy laptops. Her budget is $600 and mine is $850. We both love apple products, because of it's elegant design and yet powerful. But we can't yet afford mac laptops.. so we are looking for alternatives. One we see is The Stylish Sony E-Series (white version) see it here. To give you an Idea, Software she frequently use are Photoshop, MS Office and firefox. • database on SSD: data only or the DBM program too?

  I plan on moving the data I use for statistical analysis (100-ish Gb) onto an SSD. The data is either sqlite single-file db's, or postgresql-managed data. The SSD is 240 Gb, 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. Should I reserve that space for the data only, or would it be a good idea to install the operating system (Mac OS X) and the application directory (Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office and the like) on the SSD too? And would it make a substantial speed difference whether I also install the postgresql binaries on the SSD? I have plenty of other space (another 300Gb hard-drive, and a 1Tb one). Don't know the features of the non-SSD drives, though they're our standard equipment on all Macs, and they're definitely OK. Thanks.

• Flash not working in Safari on OS X 10.5

  About 2 weeks ago my browsers started bothering me to upgrade flash. Eventually, I did, and now I have no flash at all in Safari. I downloaded and installed the newest flash installer from Adobe. Firefox works fine. Safari does not, I just get the blue lego and a 'No handler for this content type' message. Other plugins, such as 1Password, seem fine. I have tried: Reinstalling flash umpteen times Deleting /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin and flashplayer.xpt Deleting ~/Library/Application Data/Safari I'm not sure what else to do.

• How can I share a video file during a webinar?

  Here is the scenario: I have a number of remote employees around the globe. I want to have a video chatting session. No problem there. Halfway through, I want to shut off all camera video feeds and simulcast (synchronous) a training video to my team. How do I do this? We have tried office communicator, but the frame rate was awful and no audio. Adobe Connect had similar trouble. In both cases we were limited by the main office's small internet pipe, but it is clear that video delivered by shared desktop is not a good solution.

  I need to convert to PDF a Word document containing embedded vector EPS images (by printing to PDF printer - I use Word 2003). Several years ago I tested some of commercial and free PDF printers and found none, with except to Acrobat Distiller, which embeds in the generated PDF file real PostScript content of the EPS image instead of the preview showed by Word. Has the situation changed from that time? Do you know any free or commercial PDF printer which handles embedded EPS correctly?   Since 2007, I had a Macbook and it has a program called Preview that can highlight and add notes to a PDF file. So for this 3 years, I tried to find a similar program on Windows and it looks like the best is still Adobe Acrobat, about 200MB, 300MB in size, good for 30 days, and if purchased, for about $400. Is there a simple tool on Windows that can let us highlight text (and possibly add notes / annotation)? Just highlighting is good enough and it doesn't look like a very complication operation. thanks.

  My friend gave me his laptop to salvage after being the victim of numerous viruses and malware. I asked him if there was anything important on the laptop that he wanted to keep. He said he wanted to keep his (legit) copy of Adobe Premiere/After Effects and a few videos he edited. He doesn't have the install CDs so I know the software he paid thousands for in 2007 is gone.   I've published an ebook in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. I sell this ebook DRM free and take what I consider a friendlier/less obtrusive approach of using a service to "stamp" the customer's name and email address onto each page of the ebook as a way to discourage piracy. I would like to take this same approach for selling the ebook in ePub and/or Kindle formats. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any stamping services for ePub or Kindle. Is DRM my only anti-piracy option when using ePub and Kindle? For a reference point, ebookstamper.com stamps ebooks in PDF format. No, they don't do anything other than PDF.

• Do I need a license to create pdf files? [closed]

  I hope this is the correct place where I could ask this question. My mother is an accountant with a degree in economics. She works as a freelancer and she needs some licenses for her job. The biggest problem is adobe acrobat standard, which costs 400€, quite a lot. I want understand if she must buy it to create pdf files or she can use some free (even for commercial use) programs that she has because of her job (the chamber of commerce provide some advantages to accountants). • Why does a Windows 7 installation grow so seriously and how to shring it?

  I store all my data and the most of applications (those legally available in "portable" versions) on drive D: and only use drive C: for the Windows system and some heavily integrated applications like MS Office, Visual Studio, Adobe Reader, Flash Player etc. When I was using Windows XP, 50 GiB drive C: was more than enough. Now, as I've mitigated to Windows 7, it hardly is. Yesterday as I've checked, 7 GiBs were free on drive C:. Then I've installed fresh Windows updates (which were just some tens of MiBs to download) and checked again: now there are only 2 GiBs free. Where have 5 GiBs gone? PS: Don't be surprised my system installation takes actually that much: I've got Visual Studio and SQL Server with complete offline documentation library, but that doesn't explain where does free space disappear on simple Windows updates. PPS: I use an augmented CCleaner version to clean my PC every day, so there are for sure no temporary internet files of recycle bin trash files taking the place.

• How to fix audio/game stuttering in Google Chrome's Flash plug-in?

  I'm having an issue. Windows XP, running the latest Chrome 23 build. I'm using Flash 11.5 built into Chrome (Pepper Flash). It runs horribly. Chrome 22 did not have this issue as far as I recall. What a shame. YouTube videos stutter badly and after a while, they begin to lag and lose sync with the video. I disabled Pepper Flash and tested HTML5 video in YouTube and it was smooth as glass. Additionally, certain Flash based games are almost unusable now. The plug-in is using 100% CPU and it lags horribly in these games. Google/Adobe, please fix this. I shouldn't have to disable the built-in Flash plug-in (with added sandboxing security) and use regular Flash to resolve this. Short of waiting for an update to Chrome, does anyone have a better solution to fixing this? I am all ears.

• What happens when you add a Graphics card to a i7 with build in graphics (e.g. HD 4000)

  I'm thinking of upgrading my computer from an AMD Phenom II X4 955BE with a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Graphics card (not integrated) to using a Intel Core i7 3770. As I have no knowledge of integrated graphics, my question is, what happens to the computing power when not using the HD4000 integrated graphics of the CPU (does it mean the CPU will run faster then it would if I relied on it?) Also what is better the CPUs inbuilt HD4000 or my Radeon Graphics card? I am mostly interested in terms of content creation: Using Adobe After Effects, 3D Rendering etc. Not too bothered about gaming performance. I will be using the spare parts of this build and older systems to make a second computer for network renders so what will be the advantages of keeping the Radeon with the current system for that?

  I have to record a video to showcase a tool I've made. It's going to include my talking, but I also want some overlay text (subtitles) for people who doesn't have sound. I'm looking for a program that will let me add a text overlay (as subtitle) for my video, and if possible, export it as .flv . I've tried this so far: Used CamStudio for recording, using their lossless format. Converted the .avi file to a .flv using Any Video Converter (free version) I've been having some trouble with the output of CamStudio, some programs can't play the file right, it skips forward and backward. (VLC, Adobe Media Encoder CS4) So I'm looking for a program that accepts videos from CamStudio*, can add text to my video, and hopefully export as flv. *(If that's not possible I'm open for other recording programs). I'd like to ONLY use free programs, and I'm on Windows XP. Looking forward to your help :)

• Managing self-updating Windows software in GPO-deployed packages

  Being very new to Windows software distribution for a small network (<50 clients) I was wondering how software packages like Adobe's Reader or Java are handled. I can deploy them as MSIs via group policies just fine. But what happens when the client software detects updates? What are common ways to handle this? Disable the software's autoupdate feature? Redeploy when the admin detects a new version? Just fishing for knowledge, thanks for any hint.

• How do I install Flash for just one browser on Mac?

  How can I install Flash for just Firefox and not Safari? I would like to have Flash not load at all, so the Click to Flash extension is not good enough. I've looked at the Safari plist and don't see any way to disable it. Alternatively, updating the Flash plugin that is built into Chrome would solve this. I used to use Chrome for my flash only browsing, but Google is not updating the embedded flash player. I found the way to force Chrome to ignore it's built in plugin in this Adobe KB article, but then Chrome just uses the plugin installed for the system.
